Magical realism ... an adventure into wonder, delight at bending, flexing, opening the mind & heart with chords and notes pushing against gravity. I love the nuance of surprises elevating the listener then grounding with the the familiar Bach foundational music. A riff soaring, transforming opening elegance - a beautiful conversation. Thank you Brad Mehldau.
. I had been listening to handpans and all manner of musics tonight. I couldn't have known that this is exactly what needed right now, washing through a great loss and sadness. There is so much information here! Such inventive intelligence, seamless beauty and sheer splendor. Thank you ever for the gift of this inspiration and wonder 🏇
He takes the melody from the start and keeps taking it to a mysterious direction (turning a relatively simpler harmony into dissonance that has the ability to evoke a lot of emotions) to finally bring one of the main motifs (1:40) back even more striped down than the start with high energy (6:50). He has stated in an interview that the idea of taking a melody and molding it into something completely different while keeping it the same at some degree is fascinating to him and we can clearly hear that in this piece. Blurring the lines between jazz and classical. I hear this in 5/8 but the way he plays with his natural dynamic tendency, fluidity and elasticity is just awe-inspiring. It's also very interesting that to a listener he seemingly ends the tune at 7:53 but then reintroduces the introduction of the piece to give it more strength. I heard new things each listen.
Remember: in Bach's time Johann was well known as a solo improviser of spiralling thematic works. I get the sense that the majority of this was improvised with a few preset structures determining the flow of the improvisation: the theme, progression and the ostinato.
"After Bach: Rondo,” which follows Prelude No. 3 in C# Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier, opens with a genteel flourish. (It faintly evokes “John Boy,” from Mehldau’s 2014 album Highway Rider.) But the improvisation takes the piece through a range of permutations...

Are the sudden ritardandos and subdivision inconsistencies voluntary? Opinions? I am personally surprised that they didn't choose a perfect, metronomical, mechanical take - I like it though. Maybe the piece is so damn hard even Brad can't perform it that precisely?
I really doubt Mehldau would have released an official take that he wasn't confident in. That said, I personally enjoy the sudden fluctuations. Perfectly on the grid can be incredibly sterile. I doubt it was intended to be mechanical, and even if you suggest "Oh, but Bach should be played..." yeah, but it's also called "After Bach" and Mehldau is more influenced by the likes of Brahms and, you know, Jazz.
it's hard to return to planet earth after listening to this
There is no much that can be said...maybe that living is worth it to find music like this piece.
agree :)
I realize it's kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Kaison Gideon Flixportal :)
@Jackson Camilo thank you, signed up and it seems to work :) I really appreciate it!
@Kaison Gideon You are welcome xD
I was honoured to see Brad live. What a charisma, precision, imagination! Fantastic personality.
Giant.
Love you Bradhou mwen-yonn. Rodolf ÉTIENNE. You're the one, the best. Thx.
Ohoh … Selten, dass Intellekt und Emotion so anregend gefüttert werden … Danke.
This is nothing short of genius... what else can I say. The piece speaks for itself.

I always knew that Brad was great but After Bach has elevated my opinion of his artistry to a new stratosphere.
Ugh that was so deliciously free and beautiful

I heard new things each listen.
But this is in straightforward 3/4 time
walkercatenaccio I'm not sure how you could hear it in 3/4, the whole piece is going in 5 to my ears.
I'm also hearing 5/8
walkercatenaccio it's definitely in 5/8
what "lines"? =)
Great piece, great album and great musician. Thank you!
Captivating....mesmerizing.....hauntingly beautiful.
Speaks to the soul
He is one of the most sincere musicians I know.
Can not wait to hear more of this album.

I love his pauses
Wow. What a great privilege to have been able to...feel this song.
This is amazing, 5/8 feels always work so nicely on a piano
It feels so spacious and unrestrained, love it!
Wow - what talent! Well done. Brilliant.
Wowwww. 6 seconds in and I'm sooooo sold. Genius
I can't say how much times i pressed the button "Replay".
Very clever and creative : the right distance between Bach and Brad
Amazing sound!!
Amazing!!
underbart .. kul att Keith får en efterträdare ..

Marvellous, as ever!!! Love you!
Beautiful! And love the picture for the cover :)
Vi a Brad en Burgos el año pasado.Y me encanta Bach.Deseando que salga el disco
so excited. Bach and mehldau.
The beginning of this beautiful piece sounds like "John Boy" from Mehldau's album Highway Rider.
it is. the piece merges with the bach prelude :)
I'm not the only one
It's 3rd prelude of WTC 1
Fabuleux!
fantastic!! New perspectives on the C#major Prelude!
This is a very cool music track!
Love it!!
素晴らしいですね。wonderful😄
This is your's, leave Bach's name out of it and embrace IMPROVISATION.
Dios habita en las manos de Brad Mehldau

5:18 sublime. Reminds me vaguely of Debussy.
Stunningly, penetratingly, addictively enrapturing. Thank you.
Is a brilliant idea. I guess anything can be a springboard if you're good enough.

Fantástico!! Me recuerda o tiene un aire a John Boy....de Highway Rider.....
Yes...
:-)) without the Maj/Min twitch.
Listening to J S B is always like being in another world
Obviously I have to buy this album.
Genius!
Sensacional ♥️
Really cool! I’m assuming this is an album of original music inspired by Bach...

Questa musica è senza confini e definizioni: è Musica.
♥️
Does anyone know if I can get a sheet music of this?

On "John Boy" they never should have added the sax. It's a wonderful composition as is, for solo piano. This man is a genius.
I'd say that for the whole Highway Rider album imho
Jon Brion messed up that production. Bad partnership for Mehldau to be working with. He couldn't shine Brad's shoes . . . hot air.
Sublime!
😃❤️🍀
Orginal name ?

5/8?

Beautiful mess! I can bathe my mind in this piece like Cleopatra in milk :)
But Bach saw this coming when he wrote his fugues. We are all in part of his plan
It's sound like Venezuelan "Merengue Caraqueño" something in between 5 and 6/8
rOBERTO mARTINEZ it is actually 5/16. The original prelude is in 6/16 he just left out one thus that odd rhythmic

To my understanding it is a composition of Brad himself. But one can surely also write music that is too hard for one self to play.
I noticed this too, I actually prefer the Vimeo ( vimeo.com/185693735 ) live version to this one. Just sounds more organic and with a better flow.
I really doubt Mehldau would have released an official take that he wasn't confident in.

I was excited about watching the live version, but unfortunately the vimeo link seems to be broken!
vimeo.com/185693735 , without the last bracket :D
This doesn't sound like any Bach that I know; so it must be WAY after Bach.
Mehldau is improvising on Prelude #2 in C# Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1.
jcfelice88keys #3
Great. Mehldau is God. Sounds a bit like "John Boy"?
It’s not Bach and it’s not Jazz.
Spot on
It's Mehldau.
We can't keep calling this kind of music making 'cross over' can we? Maybe 'alloy' would be a better name for it :)
Better than bj
