  • Feathered treble hooks are a great way to add additional movement, color, and flash to your lures. In this video, I will be demonstrating how to create a feathered treble hook using no fly tying tools or skills! While the traditional method is superior, this method is easy, quick, and produces a fairly aesthetic result that is equally as durable. Links to all of the materials are below! 👍

Great video! Want to try this one out. I like the fact you don’t have to spend a bunch of money on fly tying tools.

Thank you 🙏 - I have found heat shrink to be useful for several things - I keep finding ways to use it by accident 🤷‍♂

I love the look of this and I will never be mistaken for a professional who ties flies so I tried. Hoping for a few pointers as my results were not as good as yours.
    1. I scorched some of the flash. I am unsure if I held the heat gun too close or blasted it too long, but the flash got frizzled with heat.
    2. Another problem I had was spreading the flash around to cover all of the hooks. It seemed as though my flash all fell to one spot, and try as I may, I could not get it to spread out more around all of the points on the treble hooks.
    Thanks for the tutorial!

Perhaps your heat gun is stronger than mine, or maybe the specific type of flash that you're using has different properties - the flash im using is a typical pliable nylon flash material (like a crystal flash) - nylon is pretty heat resistant, and has a lot of memory almost like monofilament line. There's a link to the flash that I used in the description. It tends to flare out naturally when the heat shrink wrap is compressed. If the flash you're using is flimsy rather than stiff, it might be preventing it from flaring out, but it might still flare out in the water.

@dtffishingmi Thanks for the reply. Since typing that question, I have tried two other times with success. I placed the flash one at a time through the eye and "criss crossed" each piece so it would fall evenly rather than clumping up in one spot. When using the heat gun, I held the hook in a gloved hand in such a way that any residual heat was hitting my glove rather than frying the flash. They both came out much better.
Thanks for the reply and for sharing this method.

Looks cool man was just wondering do u know if feathered hooks would work for bait fishing power bait or is it better to use then for only lures and spinners?

Typically, feathered hooks are used to add a life-like movement to the presentation. Without movement, it just looks like feathers and probably would only decrease the effectiveness of a stationary bait in the water. I suppose if you’re trolling baits for blue cats or something like that, it could help to catch their attention and entice a strike. Those feathered hooks might be gross and unusable after a single use though
