- A PMV about Mothwing!
I recently read Mothwing's new novella, and it was really good. I really loved how her character struggles with her faith in Starclan - as well as issues with her family and clan life. Then I heard this song on the new Glass Animals album and it just fit her. So I speed run this PMV and got it done in like a week?
So basically it uses this idea of halos to represent faith - the golden halo is for cats that believe in starclan, the blue halo one is for cats that don't. Hawkfrost's is for cats that believe in the dark forest.
Also I should just say a lot of these scenes may not have happened exactly in the books, I just ended up streamlining the story for clarity's sake. Same with left out characters.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS! Mothwing struggle with faith is so compelling. I love how even after discovering that Starclan IS real she still doesn’t think they are “all knowing” and continually questions their judgement, as an atheist her story is very relatable. The circles that represent faith ARE PERFECT! I can’t believe you put this together so quickly?!
yet, the cats know they aren’t all knowing. all of the med cats realize this from the dark forest rising and starclan being scared to the point that they degrade the clan’s health until jayfeather and firestar is like “get yo sh*t together p*ssies” and they decide to join.

There are actually a lot of moments in the books where the cats say stuff like ‘starclan doesn’t make mistakes’ and ‘it’s starclans will, it must be done’ it’s implied in more recent books that they know starclan isn’t all knowing but it was very prominent in earlier books and novellas placed further back in the timeline.
it shows in AVOS that when starclan came to fight back with the dark forest, mothwing thought they were just a bunch of rouges that jumped in to help

true. but in AVOS they do mention it, wether it’s canon or not in other books or series, so that’s what i was going at
god this entire pmv is just beautiful but honestly i just fucking love 1:33-1:41 bc like. this is mothwing *trying* to believe. and she goes and sees leafpool and she *knew* leafpool in life, and leafpool was the one who helped her and accepted her before anyone else, but something about starclan has changed her - she's so unresponsive to mothwing now, when she was never like that in life - and its part of what makes mothwing *choose* not to believe in starclan, even if she accepts its existence. because starclan let her brother break her faith, and leafpool was the one who restored it - if not in starclan, in herself - and now starclan has changed the person she trusted before anyone else too.
okay im pretty late but is this scene canon? does leafpool change after death?

I LOVE THE HALOS SO MUCH!! The StarClan cats being all golden and pretty... Mothwing believing in but willfully turning away from StarClan at the end, and the halo disappearing completely... beauty
I think that the halo represents Mothwing refusing to let StarClan define her. She sees and reacts to the halos as if they define everyone else, so when hers disappears it's like she's taking control of her own life.

i think it's really nice how Mothwing ends up believing in Starclan but willingly turns away from them. i really relate to her struggled with her faith and her family/friends and that's what makes her one of my favorite characters
"What makes a man?" Mothwing asks. Starclan's hunting grounds are sparkling around her, each star dancing stronger than the night sky. After all these years, her heart aches with confusion. The only thing that gives her a string of hope is the best friend who stands before her. She had missed her so much. Even then, it had taken Mothwing six months to visit Starclan, unwilling to touch the moonpool, afraid of what she might see. Would it just be another dream? Would Starclan speak to her? Or would they be angry with her lengthened silence.after all this time?
The air is still around them as Leafpool replies.
"Free will."
Mothwing looks down at her paws before turning to leave, thinking back to the way Leafpool was twisted to give up her kits. She remembers the great battle; how she stuck cobwebs on her dying clanmates, and how Starclan had only shown up at the last minute. They'd been too late for so many cats. And finally, she remembers back to her apprenticeship. That she had only "earned starclan's blessing" by omission. Her brother had set her on the path to being a medicine cat. Not her warrior ancestors.
No. She doesn't need Starclan to experience free will. She'd had that all along.

this is INCREDIBLE. i never thought i'd be crying about mothwing but this is one of the most beautiful, emotional, well made PMVs i've ever seen. the metaphors? the way you convey her waning belief in starclan? the exploration of her relationship with hawkfrost? i've never seen anything like it. it's so mature, so touching, so clear, so... SIMPLE. and so so good. absolutely incredible. i love it
I love Mothwing so much, she was one of the most relatable characters to me when reading since I'm athiest/agnostic. I remember people disliking her so much just for not believing in StarClan (there was a lot of hate for athiest cats for some reason??). StarClan has always been a big nope for me, and seeing cats actually not believe in them or know they aren't the best cats always made me feel better.
And to this day, all the warrior OCs I make are athiests or don't put much faith in StarClan.

Not even just warrior ocs, I love the struggle with faith stories, and one of my oldest characters falls into that.
I know a lot of people say this but I wish starclan stayed like it was in the first arc. It was mysterious and we were unsure of its powers, so it made sense why there would be atheist cats. But then it got kinda ruined when starclan just started shoving themselves more and more into the common cats life. So atheist's cats are often just painted as dumb rather than skeptical. And also don't forgot Sols whole "Remember kids, society can only function with religion and if you don't believe than you have no morals your okay with babies and old people dyeing". o.o
Tbh, I wonder if Mothwing will even go to Starclan when she dies. She doesnt follow them and didnt believe in them for a good while.
She doesnt think of them that highly.
Would be interesting if she didnt go after death and we got to see what it was like for her.
But for the sake of fans who'd complain, maybe Leafpool comes down to guide her....

But considering Freckclewish and Ashfur's situation, i dont think she'll be accepted unfortunately.

I've watched this so many times but I just thought about how when Moth sees starclan that first time they are haloed but have no discernible features and are blinded by their divinity. Then when Moth sees Leaf, it's no longer a blinded by faith faceless cat, it's someone Moth trusted and loved, symbolizing how her view on starclan has changed. Basically I have emotions about Mothwing.
This is incredible! The colors are so perfect and that symbolism is awesome. I’m surprised more people aren’t making stuff about this novella considering that a) it’s Mothwing and b) it’s one of the best warriors books we’ve had,,, ever? In my opinion? Maybe it’s just because it resonated with me but I feel like it’s super

Symbolism is incredible! Especially I love how in the end (sorry if I understood it wrong) Mothwing realises that Starclan exists, but stops believe in it's power.

This is one of the most unique Warriors pmvs I’ve ever seen! The halo symbolism is so clever, and you pulled it off gracefully, and it connected the story in such a meaningful manner. Great job as always!!
this is hands down the best warrior cats fan content i've seen, the symbolism, the progression of the narrative, how you match the atmosphere of the music with the visuals and the bloody colours, INCREDIBLE!
Oh this is so pretty, and I LOVE the song choice (the new Glass Animals album is FANTASTIC)! Mothwing's character arc is so interesting and full of potential, she really deserves more content exploring it all! It is super easy to see the atheistic characters in Warriors as foolish due to Starclan's proven existence, but the way Mothwing chooses to walk her own path rather than be beholden to the words of her ancestors is super neat! I adore the way you visually represented her struggle with her faith, it was so simple and well conveyed!
I still can't get over how incredible this pmv is. The way you showed each character's beliefs and Mothwing's shifting beliefs with the symbols behind their heads is absolutely genius

I LOVE how you incorporated the halos, I understood instantly what they meant and it works so beautifully! Mothwing is such an amazing character and it's always so nice to see great animations about her!
I love this. The things around the head for faith and belief in certain things (or lack thereof): golden disks that become suns upom joining Starclan, dark tendril masses for place of no stars, the emptiness of the blue circle for Mothwing.
Plus the colors in general were just amazing.
This video isn’t that old but it already feels so nostalgic. It’s just so beautiful and actually I discovered Glass Animals from this. This will always be one of my favorite PMV’s

As an atheist I like characters like Mothwing and Cloudtail and I think this AMV is beautiful (the halos are such a good idea!), but I wish their atheism wasn’t constantly presented in the books like it was a problem or a flaw. :(

I love the streaked look of them, and the symbolism works so well with Mothwing and her feelings toward Starclan (can't blame her... half the time I dont' think Starclan is helping as much as making things worse in the confusion).

I love how the Halo’s represent their ranks, and that, that is *so creative*
It doesn't represent ranks, it represents faith. The smokey ones represent faith in the dark forest, the blue ones represent no faith and the gold ones represent faith in starclan. The spiky gold ones are StarClan cats.

I haven't had the chance to read Mothwing's novella yet so maybe it goes more into Mothwing's belief (or lackthereof) in StarClan, but I really love this PMV and have always thought that despite her initial doubts, Mothwing probably knew StarClan existed after a certain point (after the battle with the Dark Forest it would be pretty hard to say nothing is going on at all) but belief and faith aren't the same thing, and faith is what Mothwing really never had. And it makes total sense for her to question them-- StarClan often doesn't know any better than living cats, and still have the same biases they held in life, so what makes them better than the living? And why don't more cats question StarClan and its motives when it is wrong or when it doesn't stop a bad thing from happening? Furthermore, some cats are willing to use StarClan and others' faith in it to manipulate others, like what Hawkfrost did, so can you really trust things like vague omens?
Anyways, tangent aside, I absolutely love the style of this PMV, the designs of the characters, and the song choice. It's beautiful and incredibly well made, and I've rewatched it several times because it's just a feast for your eyes. Thank you for one of my new favorite PMVs! Also, I started listening to Glass Animals' new album because of this and it's awesome dskjalh
