I love Denise as a person, but it became a little unclear where she stood during the endgame. I think if the show built up her relationship with Ben a lot more, her end moves would have made more sense.
I think what it boils down to is it just was not her game. The move she made against Sandra seemed inauthentic to me and I think this interview sort of proves that, that Denise was trying to be a player that she wasn't. Season 40 had your manipulative, strategists trying to be social players (Ben, Sarah) and then your social players being forced to play the part of strategists (Denise) and in the end it just didn't work for them.
Yup. seemed like after her 2 biggest strategic allies got voted off (Adam & Kim) , she was "done" making moves, being mentally exhausted. And she went " let's just hangout and survive through as long as we can" with the other 3. Totally felt being unjust for her when she was asked that "Are you even playing to win?" question. To be fair, nobody else other than the 2+3(late allies) wanted to play with her it seemed.
@@junkerinhistrunker Sarah was definitely a social player on her winning season, she just got zero personal content in the edit or any social content to show it. That’s why the whole jury was so emotional and butthurt by her - they all thought she was their best friend, and they gave her a hard time at ftc
@@TheMurrmursonbottle yeah i should have rephrased, I meant to say that Ben and Sarah were attempting these redemption narratives by trying to play a more ethical game
This was an awesome interview. Denise is as low key as they can get and I very much like her honesty, sense of humor, and tenacity in the game and in this podcast.
Survivor Philippines is one of the best seasons to watch. No battle of the sexes, no redemption island, no shenanigans. All hail the queen slayer. If Denise didn't wasted one of her idols to Jeremy and saved it until the final six where everyone played an idol, Sarah would've find herself in the same situation back in Game Changers where Cirie was sent home because she doesn't have immunity. It would've been a great parallel.
I hate saying this but I think Denise was out of her depths. I really think the amount of lying, manipulation, and twists/advantages in S40 didn't allow Denise to play to any of her strengths which really are her observational and interpersonal skills. She tried to be a power player by taking out Sandra, and while that was a great move, it still felt a little inauthentic to who Denise is for me.
I think CBS told the Survivors not to pre-game align and there is quite a bit of bitterness against Tony/Sarah & Ben for pre-game aligning. Survivors like Jeremy, Nick, Wendell, Tyson are pissed that those three played as a solid three and never ever gunned for anyone in the group. Made it very difficult for anyone else in the group to have any chance.
Was really looking forward to this, as i was at the time befuddled by why she + Nick + Michelle (+ Ben) didnt team up in the end which just made so much sense as per the ponderosa interrogation. Denise explains it in a way that is understandable, she is a fantastic person and great Survivor champion. Overall this season felt very "old school" in its fundamentals to me... when it came down to the crunch, people stuck with the people they liked and trusted instead of going new school gamebot (Sarah, Ben also)... a bit frustrating perhaps to us game junkies at the time, but its easy to pontificate from the couch etc. I cannot pay enough tribute to these amazing players who have given me so much viewing pleasure over the years - thank u Mama D!
Well said it’s easy to be a gamebot in Live or Online games, but when you’re actually a tribal Survivor within those elements, the battling or balancing of those affects every game move you consider..
What an articulate lady. Love her. Though I can not understand why she voted Sandra off, even after Jeremy had told her he did not want to work with her and voted against her. It was a savage move and big time kudos. However, Sandra is the most loyal player in the game. She has your back. She threw the fish that Rupert caught after Rupert was voted off because she did not want them to enjoy his hard work. She tried to get rid of Russell and avenge Tyson, Rob, Courney and even though she did not like Coach, she threw him in there. She took out J.T. as a revenge for getting Malcom booted. She was loyal to Tony in Game Changers until Tony went after her for spying on her and Troyzon. Sandra would have done everything to be loyal to Denise if she had decided to work with her. Regardless, it was an awesome move and I yelled the minuted Sandra opened her mouth to negotiate her hidden idol.
i totally agree sandra always came off to me as a loyal player and remember in game changers she was super loyal to michaela and Varner. I think it would have been better for too keep sandra cause sandra would be a sheild and she would have an idol still
I love all of these. I think the person I'd most want to hear from is Nick. Word is he got a crappy edit but made it far. Idk, I'd like his take on everything.
I bet you Nick is quite bitter.
Just any time anyone mentioned tony or sarah, the tony sarah alliance, including Denise, Ben and Nick did everything they could to stop it. TO me those were the five that went in to win. They pulled off the heist. I'm sure each of them split the winnings, maybe not evenly, but close to.
I agree. While Sandra is all about, "As long as it ain't me", what people may not realize is that she is a very loyal player. She was loyal to Rupert, Christa, Boston Rob, Courtney, Hali, Varner, Michaela, Troyzan and Malcolm. She was at an extent not willing to write down Parvati's name. She may give up an ally out but mostly it was because the majority targeted that ally.
I bet Jeremy is pissed. @Andy Chou Parv and Rob Ben and Adam (Adam and Sunday visited Ben often) Denise and Parv (Sarah, Denise, and Parv, Sophie. Sarah was suppose to protect Sophie, and Parv was suppose to protect Denise) Ethan and Parv (Parv was invited to his wedding and was 1 of the 3 castaways to attend) Michelle and Windell Michelle and Jeremy
I don’t care what anyone says, nice person but not that good of a player. Sandra move was to feed her own ego and really not that strategic bcuz if it was she would’ve gotten Jeremy or Tony.
Considering Tony slipped back into his ways and So tight with Sarah I think Sandra made a good move. I think she was trying to wangle Yuls unconnected alliance with herself, Denise, Adam, sophie and kim
Sandra was a valid threat, she was solidifying trust with Jeremy, making it so her and Jeremy were guaranteed to have half the tribe, and it made it so she didn't have to give Sandra the second fire token.
Denise said Sandra was sketchy. And Sandra was sitting out in most challenges which lower their probability of winning tribal immunity. They knew they needed to get through at least 1 more tribal before the merge and if Denise voted Kim/Tony/Jeremy then loses the next challenge she will be the target again. Though on hindsight it was the only time Tony was vulnerable to be voted out. And if she did voted Tony/Kim/Jeremy, their tribe loses again, she just need to convinced the rest to vote out Sandra next although that might be a uphill task. Tony also said in the podcast that Sandra was foolish to make that move by selling the fire tokens to Denise, thinking that she better make use of the idol before it expire. Tony said if it was him he could still use it to weaponise and manipulate to her advantage because nobody will know it's an expired idol. That is why Tony is the best player of all time!
Would be great to watch Denise in a Game Changers kinda season where she was one of two or three winners amongst other returning players. Then she wouldn't be able to be under the radar and we can see her social and strategic game on full display!
I really did not care for Denise on this season at all. I felt like she behaved like a mean girl. In my opinion she would have been better off in an alliance she was not so clearly at the bottom of.
I love Denise as a person, but it became a little unclear where she stood during the endgame. I think if the show built up her relationship with Ben a lot more, her end moves would have made more sense.
Her game went on the decline real fast after the Kim boot

Or if she used the idol to get Tony out instead of Sandra it's hard to pick a winner ay because Sandra was not a threat in challenges...
Can we get Danni Boatwright pls?!? Need to compensate for her airtime with the podcast than the entire season 40!!!

I wish she would have voted Tony off instead of Sandra. Sandra would have been loyal to her...... unlike Tony.
Once Sandra is loyal to someone, she stays loyal to you.

I was waiting for this one, Denise is awesome, now we want to see the one with Adam! Hopefully it will be posted soon

Know that. There pregame plans did not end as well, so they are bitter.
True
I'm still Surprised Natalie was the first boot and not Michelle due to Nats physical strength
Parv said nat made it easy cause she was pushing way too hard!
@Andy Chou Parv and Rob
Ben and Adam (Adam and Sunday visited Ben often)

Michelle and Jeremy
@Andy Chou these were all the 'strong' relationships outside the game before going in.
@Andy Chou Yes, especially Ethan and Parv, and Ben and Adam.
I've also heard that Natalie can be rude/off-putting, which might be a reason as well.
great interview!!! Please interview some more female players throughout the years! Would love to hear from Nattalie Bolton from Micronesia
