It´s incredible how this Dutch team, perhaps the best team in history, didn´t won any title.

I had the good fortune to be at this game, and the highlights do not do justice to Holland's near total dominance. For the first half hour England could not get near the ball. After they went up 2-0 the Dutch coasted somewhat but were still totally in control. It really was a football masterclass, and I count myself lucky to see such a historic team in action. Cruyff totally ran the game. They could have won by five or six if they had gone flat out.

Holland take England to the cleaners without trying too hard as they often did around this time. If they'd really put themselves out it could have been 6-0. Johan Cruyff here playing as he had been doing since 1973 - as a midfield general, rather than the all action centre-forward he had been in his youth at Ajax in the mid-sixties.

Neil Turnham That's correct. From 1973 to 1979, he played in a rebooted Alfredo Di Stéfano manner. Controlling, dictating & orchestrating play from everywhere on the pitch. And also tracking back into defensive areas, to help out defensively & build the play from there accordingly.
It took his game to the level's of a Pelé, Di Stéfano.

This was the only time England played Holland in their glory years. Such a shame Cruyff didn’t go to Argentina 78.

The good old days when England's main weapon of attack was pumping hopeful balls into the box.

That was that for Stan Bowles, the two pieces he is featured in this really poor passing from team mates wasted good running and movement on his part. Shame he never got to play more IMO.

My very first England game. Cruyff my hero at the time. England spent most of the game running back towards their own goal. Apart from the Dutch being so good I remember they were quite dirty as well which they're not know for. Lot's of shirt pulling, blindside holding etc but probably part of the reason they were so dominant.
