I’ll always have a memory of being in high school getting drunk at a local punk house and a band started playing this and handed the mic in the crowd for someone to do guest vocals. I had never been on stage let alone sang in front of other people but I was so happy they were playing boxcar and grabbed that mic and drunkenly sang the whole tune while everyone else sang along and moshed. So much fun.
you kids are funny! the truth is both of these band have respect for each other! i use to book these bands in the late 80's. jawbreaker did i lot of singles but there lp wasn't release in till late 1989. green day was doing records since 1987! but they didn't release a full LP till 1990. both bands did well at the time. however blake schwarzenbach chose education as career path. it is true green day formed before jawbreaker! Jawbreaker first show was on March 16, 1989 green day playing since 87!
I listen punk, I love both She's A Rebel and Molly's Lips, then I heard about this punk song which apparently sounded pretty much like those two. Kinda knew I would love this before I even heard it, eventually I did.
You're not punk, and I'm telling everyone. Save your breath, I never was one. You don't know what I'm all about. Like killing cops and reading Kerouac. My enemies are all too familiar. They're the ones who used to call me friend. I'm coloring outside your guidelines. I was passing out when you were passing our your rules. One. Two. Three. Four. Who's punk what's the score? Got a friend. Her name is Boxcar. Cigarettes and beer in El Sob. Her hair was blue, now it's green. I like her mind. She hates the scene. My enemies are all too familiar. They're the ones who used to call me friend. I'm coloring outside your guidelines. I was passing out when you were passing our your rules. One. Two. Three. Four. Who's punk what's the score? You're on your own. You're all alone.
True. Jawbreaker was always a little uncomfortable in the punk community. They were a little bit punk rock, indie rock and college rock all at the same time. I think that is why I always liked them. They had a little bit of all the things I like!!!
@rogerthatrocks Nice :). the term emo was used mid 90's on..to explain the weak little backpack kids in the back of the club crying about something while the others were smashed up towards the front of the stage having the time of our life!
@TheBlackOnWhiteCrime Enjoy! I have come across a lot of great music way after the band broke up. makes it all the more enjoyable for some weird reason.
@hatethehabs true, but both bands played "catchy pop stuff" G.D. knew what it took to listen to "the man" to be able to pull a career out of music with putting out radio friendly hits. Jawbreaker just didn't have the right people behind them as there music is so great. Sad the way the business end of the music biz gets.
Listening to this song and i recognized the chord progression to it though this is my first time listening to jawbreaker... its in she's a rebel... Green day ripped this off jawbreaker
***** The other thing to consider is that punk music is, at it's core, a very simple genre. Often, songs of the punk persuasion, Boxcar included, will only ever use a handful of chords in basically the same position. As such, it's not uncommon to hear different songs with similar rhythms and chord progressions. What makes She's a Rebel so instantly recognizable in comparison to this song is that fact that the two songs are in the same key, or are at least in very close keys.
When you're writing simple power chord based songs, chances are there will be one (if not several) other songs out there that sound almost identical to yours. That is something that can't be helped. My own band was accused of ripping off bands that I had never even heard of.
Ha ha, I'm not the only killjoy here. That's so weird and cool. But also, I'd like to say that this song pretty much reminds me of She's A Rebel by Green Day
@GREENWARRI0R Hey dude, just saw your comment haha, I'm never signed on to my youtube account. I saw this band called Grown Ups a few months ago in Austin for a SXSW / Count Your Lucky Stars / Topshelf records showcase. If you haven't heard of them (which you probably have by now because they are getting really big) I highly recommend them. rad dudes too.
@polcsek10 It's both. Emo is a derivative form of punk. When you hear that something from the 80s or 90s is emo, think less along the lines of Fall Out Boy and more of stuff like Rites of Spring/Moss Icon (80s) and Jawbreaker (90s).
@rogerthatrocks Oh man, I wasn't even thinking about it being a punk band but yeah, absolutely. I love the old ones like Youth Brigade and Dead Kennedys.
Umm. Did anyone else notice that this isn't the original version? This is the re-recording from the Dear You session and on the album, ETC. It's still good, but a little cleaner and amped up. Now, back to your original youtube comments about what's Emo, Punk and who ripped off who.
@YouthClash you have no idea what you're talking about. John Darnielle is one of the greatest lyricists ever. He writes about the most primal facets of the human condition in a way that anyone can connect with.
@briczar22 yea im reading a book from the 90s about the kalamazoo area punk scene they kept mentioning emo i thought emo was like some type of nowdays thing.
@rogerthatrocks Actually original emo is a kind of genre not their wearing style, not many people dont know what real emo is. emo is also a kind of punk rock .However, nowadays post hardcore bands that wear stupid fashion makes emo are become a bad meaning. At least you are right, this band make lots of good music .
Save your breath, I never was one You don't know what I'm all about Like killing cops and reading Kerouac [Chorus] My enemies are all too familiar They're the ones who used to call me friend I'm coloring outside your guidelines I was passing out when you were passing out your rules One, two, three, four Who's punk? @hatethehabs no not really i love green day and jawbreaker and if you listen to 1039 and kerplunk by green day it sounds a lot like dookie. they signed to a major label but they didnt change their music to fit wat the mainstream wanted it was on mtv thats why a bunch of people who never heard of green day started to listen to it. and welcome to paradise one of the albums biggest hits was on kerplunk. i dont want to get in some stupid fight it just pisses me off when people say green day sold out
streetlight3989 (6 months ago) Isn't this the Dear You version, and not the 24 Hour Revenge Therapy version? Koop89 (6 months ago)Good ears. Yeah, I just thought I'd be precise to the origin I guess.

I adore this story hahaha
I miss bands like this
I miss them so much, they were the one band that made sence to me. Lest we forget them.
The Mountain Goats cover of this for the A/V Club is ridiculously good. I love both versions.
This was my favorite Ataris song until now when I find out its a Jawbreaker song
That's definitely putting the cart before the horse.
I still prefer Bad case of Broken Heart
Awkward
No worries, I initially gave the Ataris a shot because they covered this. Now I like another band. We all get where we need to be on different paths.
you kids are funny! the truth is both of these band have respect for each other! i use to book these bands in the late 80's. jawbreaker did i lot of singles but there lp wasn't release in till late 1989. green day was doing records since 1987! but they didn't release a full LP till 1990. both bands did well at the time. however blake schwarzenbach chose education as career path. it is true green day formed before jawbreaker! At the Black Pacific concert last night, they played this song. I was seriously on the verge of tears I was so happy.
I listen punk, I love both She's A Rebel and Molly's Lips, then I heard about this punk song which apparently sounded pretty much like those two. Kinda knew I would love this before I even heard it, eventually I did.
This band is awesome and they got some diversity too. thumbs wayy up.
You're not punk, and I'm telling everyone.
Save your breath, I never was one.
You don't know what I'm all about.
Like killing cops and reading Kerouac.

This is one of two songs I know that mention my town (El Sobrante). "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver" is the other.
True. Jawbreaker was always a little uncomfortable in the punk community. They were a little bit punk rock, indie rock and college rock all at the same time. I think that is why I always liked them. They had a little bit of all the things I like!!!
Best song on the best album !!
it also sounds like molly's lips a little
It kinda does. Nice call
Ikr
And She's a Rebel
True. By the way, remember a little band called Nirvana? I think Jawbreaker was aware that it might sound more than a little bit like Nirvana's sound.
The Dirty Nil’s “No Weaknesses” sounds like this. Both great songs!
@rogerthatrocks Nice :). the term emo was used mid 90's on..to explain the weak little backpack kids in the back of the club crying about something while the others were smashed up towards the front of the stage having the time of our life!
I'm pretty sure this version of Boxcar is from the reworked sessions during the Dear You recordings yet released on Etc.
never gets stale...
@TheBlackOnWhiteCrime Enjoy! I have come across a lot of great music way after the band broke up. makes it all the more enjoyable for some weird reason.
Yeah you can tell by the harmony backing vocals in the chorus. Also appeared on the Etc release of a few years ago.
That awkward moment when Frank Iero sent you here and now you love this band
I don't give a Fuck what anyone has to say about Jawbreaker they are one of the best punk bands ever!
I'm just here to celebrate that Frank Iero retweeted my post in reply to a tweet that referenced this song. :D
i was passin out while you were passin out your rules
what a tune
couldn't agree more.
what a banger!
@hatethehabs true, but both bands played "catchy pop stuff" G.D. knew what it took to listen to "the man" to be able to pull a career out of music with putting out radio friendly hits. I ♥ This!!!!! C;
You're exactly right.
Listening to this song and i recognized the chord progression to it though this is my first time listening to jawbreaker... its in she's a rebel... Green day ripped this off jawbreaker

+Damian Starr and the Sex Pistols ripped of the Jam's "in the city" with "Holidays in the sun
When you're writing simple power chord based songs, chances are there will be one (if not several) other songs out there that sound almost identical to yours. That is something that can't be helped. My own band was accused of ripping off bands that I had never even heard of.
Even the vocal melody is the same at some times
That is tru man. Do what the fuck you want and DIY is the essence of punk rock
I get it now. Thanks for clarifying it for me.
I fully concur, roger. Good post, bud. Absolutely.
This is the version you guys wanted to hear. Not the "best" version. YOU make that choice!
@RebelThoughts It definitely has that feel good catch. even the end draws out the same. Thats probably why it caught me ear so quickly.
@MeteorArmageddon OMG! Green day also have a song that sounds like 'Summer of '69'.
:O!! Recomendaciones de Frank iero..siempre son geniales!!
Frank Iero brought me here.
Ha ha, I'm not the only killjoy here. That's so weird and cool. But also, I'd like to say that this song pretty much reminds me of She's A Rebel by Green Day
@rogerthatrocks thank you.

Being a 90's punk brought me here.
Hell, that's cool, I'm a 00's kid and my friend brought me here
@@den368able I hope you're still friends with that person because that's a damn good friend right there.
yOyOyOoyO KILLJOYS!
1234 who's punk what's the score
I'm backing you up totally ............ XXX Holli Sk8ergurl
why are people talking shit about Alkaline Trio?
Both of these bands are amazing!
she said..she’d take me anywhere..oh wait wrong song
i always thought this sounded like a nirvana riff from the bleach album. but i love this song to death.
@TheLazzor jawbreaker and green day were friends. same area, same time era. what 90s pop punk band wasn't influenced by these guys?
@rogerthatrocks Oh man, I wasn't even thinking about it being a punk band but yeah, absolutely. I love the old ones like Youth Brigade and Dead Kennedys.
Has it been said that this is the Dear You reissue version of boxcar? This is not the version from 24 hour.
@loveriamloveless336 yep. true dat.
@rogerthatrocks WELL SAID BROTHER!, WELL SAID.
This song and Green Day’s She’s a Rebel sound so similar same chord progressions
@theTurnouts The Ramones WERE a bubblegum pop band.
never noticed that til now lol
is this version of boxcar on 24hour revenge therapy or dear you? it sounds like the dear you version
Anyone ever hear THE ATARIS' cover of this song? Pretty good also...
@briczar22 yea im reading a book from the 90s about the kalamazoo area punk scene they kept mentioning emo i thought emo was like some type of nowdays thing.
this is better than nirvana
but jawbreaker are better
That’s like saying steak is better than video games. It’s apples and oranges friend
Mark Hall :(
what would you guys say is there best album? (i got an itunes gift voucher :D)
the original TRUE emo music fucking amazing
@coolethan1251 so true. i was thinking the same thing.
Kiiiiiss kiiiiiiss Molly's Lips

@Grita1997 She's a Rebel reminds you of this ;) 10 years difference haha
She's a rebel, vigilante...
this came out first. but i love both.
Frank has a good taste ^^
@rogerthatrocks hardcore!
@BIZMACKY1 You're probably thinking of the Ataris cover of this song.
jawbreaker will always be remembered for unfun. and well, thats pretty much it.
I would kill a man to go back in time and see their tour with Nirvana.
Good ears. Yeah, I just thought I'd be precise to the origin I guess.
This does not sound like the original version
it was like a remaster or something. makes me squirm how it’s off from that classic album
This version was recorded during the Dear You sessions and was later released on Etc. Not the original version from 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.
Kiss kiss molly’slips
An open door led me here. I'll shut it on the way out.
this ain't the 24 hour revenge therapy version, i think its the etc version
KISS KISS MOLLY'S LIPS
KISS KISS MOLLY'S LIPS
KISS KISS MOLLY'S LIPS
KISS KISS MOLLY'S LIPS
@loveriamloveless336 punk rock, not from hardcore?
same thing with "shield your eyes", a bit tricky to find the original version
@rogerthatrocks Actually original emo is a kind of genre not their wearing style, not many people dont know what real emo is. emo is also a kind of punk rock .However, nowadays post hardcore bands that wear stupid fashion makes emo are become a bad meaning. At least you are right, this band make lots of good music .
Save your breath, I never was one
You don't know what I'm all about
Like killing cops and reading Kerouac
[Chorus]
My enemies are all too familiar
They're the ones who used to call me friend
I'm coloring outside your guidelines
I was passing out when you were passing out your rules
One, two, three, four
Who's punk? What's the score?
[Verse 2]
Got a friend, her name is Boxcar
Cigarettes and beer in El Sob
Her hair was blue, now it's green
I like her mind, she hates the scene
[Chorus]
My enemies are all too familiar
They're the ones who used to call me friend
I'm coloring outside your guidelines
I was passing out when you were passing out your rules
One, two, three, four
Who's punk? What's the score?
[Outro]
You're on your own
You're all alone
You're on your own
You're all alone
You're on your own
You're all alone
You're on your own
You're all alone
there's also C's in this song! :P
@hatethehabs no not really i love green day and jawbreaker and if you listen to 1039 and kerplunk by green day it sounds a lot like dookie. they signed to a major label but they didnt change their music to fit wat the mainstream wanted it was on mtv thats why a bunch of people who never heard of green day started to listen to it. and welcome to paradise one of the albums biggest hits was on kerplunk. i dont want to get in some stupid fight it just pisses me off when people say green day sold out
i believe that song is actually by the vaselines and nirvana covered it but both versions are really good
@BIZMACKY1 Mm.. you mean "She's a Rebel" from Green Day ? xd
wanna know the 38 bastards that dislike this Jewelry!!! grrrrrrrr!
streetlight3989 (6 months ago) Isn't this the Dear You version, and not the 24 Hour Revenge Therapy version?
Koop89 (6 months ago)Good ears. Yeah, I just thought I'd be precise to the origin I guess.
@rogerthatrocks emo was started in the late 1980's/early 90's by bands like fugazi and rites of spring, and jawbreaker. sorry pal.
@hatethehabs They're not gonna be how they were when they were younger, it's called growing up...
Sum 41 ripped this song off too, Motivation.
i like her mind, she hates the scene.
brilliant.
this is the 95 version
Guess we now know where Billie Joe got the "She's a Rebel" riff
listen to mollys lips, its a very common chord progression
nobody "formed" a genre, it just happens. the Ramones thought they were a bubblegum pop band
@Hitcheroo no it was more out of tune and dark wasn't it? a little less fast and poppy as i remember the cassette hahaha
