He Describes A 1950s Life Of Crime & Why He Did It.

- This is a very unusual 16mm film from the 1950s that attempts to be a documentary. In some ways I believe it is. From what I can tell, the man speaking behind the mask is not an actor. This is a clip from a a police training video made in the state of Michigan to help police officers deal with lifelong criminals and understand them more deeply.
Reading the credits at the end of the film, the criminal is not credited. The film is part of my archive which has thousands of films from the 1950s that I collected over the course of my life.
Although somewhat 1950 styles formal in the way the criminal is interviewed, I find this man and the story he tells and the way he tells it, fascinating. There is something hauntingly real about how he describes his family, his upbringing, his attitude towards the crimes that he committed, what the film describes as "the criminal mind." The interviewer who was a well-known police officer from that time is just asking frank questions spoken with no emotion-we call it flat. The subject is also responding with no emotion. But those of you watching this who weren't around at that time should know that this piece of film was considered outrageously real for its time.
I do not believe that I have seen a recently produced documentary that explains, as bluntly as this one, a life of crime and what might have caused someone to become a criminal, breaking the law as consistently and as coolly as this gentleman did.
If you found this of interest, I would appreciate your clicking on the super thanks button below the video screen to the right. Your support helps me to go forward in my archive and find more clips of interest to you and other subscribers.

A 50s criminal talks more polite then most non criminals these days, Times have changed
Its because he's on TV, that doesn't mean anything
Yeah, they also do it today. You live a narrow world and see it as the entirety, fix that.
He's being himself he doesn't need to act hard he knows what he can do n he's humble
I know right?!?!? People these days talk edgy. A LOT of people talk mean just to be mean for no reason other than it makes them feel powerful or seem cooler in front of others, and then later on it’s just a natural thing to them as everything apparently becomes a “joke” when the things they say can actually hurt(The “non criminals”). Then, yeah yet... this criminal from the 50’s isn’t acting/talking tough and is being humble & honest.
@@dn7422 modern day media and films portrayed that to be the norm but if you look at the real gangsters in history they are well spoken and very charismatic...
I don't think "That's none of your business" was rude or hostile at the time, like at all. It's a perfectly fair response. People have gotten soft.
when the iceman said "now you just made me mad" without a single change in tone.. reminds me of that.
Just telling them straight to not carry on that conversation.
People were different then for sure
@tumblingplanet Really? You're saying that today we're ingrates compared to meatheads who'd beat a black man to death for saying hello to a white woman? People that would castrate and rape you for being homosexual? People who would batter their wives black and blue for displaying an iota independence or disrespect towards the men in their lives?
The standards of politeness have changed, but these people were far less ethical than the average citizen today. Don't forget that.
@tumblingplanet Yeah. Jim crow kept great records. 🙄
I'm not going to try and sell you on the idea of history. Either you can read or you can't.
@@itsasecret2298 Gosh, you’re smart. You know everything about the 50s.
To my surprise, their conversation is really easy to comprehend and is understandable for me, not an American but a foreign learner of English as a second language, possibly because the 1950’s English is very similar to my English textbooks in every sense, the vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and usage, composition, and so on. I’m really impressed with that.
The words are pronounced more clearly than they usually are now
Interesting point. I’m an American and I also appreciate how simple and direct their conversation is.
I was going to write what the heck do u mean? You seem to speak perfect English but I thought on it a little deeper and wow I see what you mean and it is 100% accurate. Also your English seems to be alot better than most people who should know proper English
@@PaulsUA-cam You haven't read very much old literature then. Try reading things form the 1800's. Their sentence structure was _much_ more complex than ours. It's a natural tendency to move from complex words diction, to simpler. We used to call it a taximeter-cabriolet. Then it was a taxi-cab. then it was a taxi. Then it was a cab.
@@PaulsUA-cam So am I. My grandmother was showing my mom a bunch of old letters (from the very early 1900s or earlier) and she was amazed at how long and complex their sentences were. My mom asked if that's the way people wrote back then and she said that it was. Just look at modern journalists, many of them can barely write, they have no command of English whatsoever.
Besides, even if you compare _professional_ writers of a couple hundred years ago to ones today, you will usually find that their sentences were longer and more complex, and if that was the case for them, we can infer it was also the case for the common speaker.
P.S. Even in my own life, I have witnessed the English language devolve to an extent I never thought possible.
I bet this guy grew up in an abusive household.

@@kyzz04 this is an active conversation. the interview with this murderer was likely recorded before your birth. it is a privilege to read your thoughts on it here. sociopaths are by nature insensitive to the needs or existence of others.
thats because he is probably a phycopath, otherwise these things might stress him out more.
@@hoodyk7342 maybe, but its hard to read someone in just a few minutes. Like, if you got into trouble VERY often it might become easy to keep your cool during interviews where as someone that gets in trouble the first time and didn't want to would probably flip out. He absolutely does have something mental going on but I'd say its hard to know exactly what, but i wouldn't say stress is the only thing that make that true or not since you can feel stressed but sound calm.
Psychopathy is also horribly misrepresented by media as well, a lack of understanding of other does make it easy to be a bad person but some people also forget that some people with psychopathy or other anti-social things going on can sometimes get treatment that works well enough for them to stay out of trouble or even have families of their own. It doesn't quite relate to this guy but I did want to point out that what you think psychopathy is MIGHT be different then how it works in real life since it works on a scale, and isn't a "on or off" type illness.

@@ellasharpe8172 that is what you call a sociopath a large majority of people pocess a form of it but most people aren't criminals killers or evil people an the ones who do represent this word as a whole are people like Charles Manson they come off as nice calm an genuinely a nice overall person jus by the way they talk an the way they carry themselves you would never know who is a true sociopath because there are so many only a few make it known but the ones that really have intent to harm others are the most dangerous for the simple fact that they can whisper sweet nothings in your ear an make you think it was your idea the brain chemistry that happens when they manipulate or persuade people is incredible for the simple fact that not a lot of people are this down to earth they aren't this calming to talk to they aren't the hated person in the group they are thee most liked person there's not a bad thing you can say about them because of how they carry themselves I'm not the dude who listened in school I slept in class an skipped to go smoke weed but there are a few things I can talk about intricately with great interest an that's the growing processes of cannabis, history what it would be like back then whether it's bce or ce, space an time you know the big bang not the show but yea not so much aliens but what could be, an conspiracy's, an the deep unexplored sea, an the agarthian theory or journey to the center of the earth theory, an lastly the mind of a sociopath that shit interesting af cuz there are a lot we don't know about our mind an body let alone everything outside our conceivably galaxy an deep within our Earth's an many others planets crusts
Long story short sociopaths are the likable friend down the street you really know nothing bout but you have nothing but good to say about them an they come from a trauma filled child hood or a misunderstood time an their life is filled w so much bs that they inevitably become this crazy person on the inside that talk very soothingly an have a calm demeanor about them despite them prolly wanting to gouge your eyes out w a piece of chalk all while smiling in your face telling you how much they love your Granny's cookies they are smart don't get it twisted they are incredibly intelligent an can comprehend more than you can within a split second they are mainly quiet an stay to themselves but observe an calculate everything they don't do shit for no reason. They have a purpose why they get coffee 6 times a day an never drink the coffee they are the hunters in our society an you are the prey
UMAD651 yeah man you definitely one of them
@@tytydt21 lmfao you know I thought I was at one point I'm a really nice person but fuckin demonic af I'll give you my last dollar an the shirt off my back but at the same time I'm plotting how I can benefit I used to do this an I thought I was till I realized I ain come from a traumatic background but everything else checks out Lls but high-key tho I wouldn't kill someone unless I needed to or jus wanted to but I'm too lazy to be a serial killer so you won't see me in the news well that relates to that you might see me big pimpin but ahha we not finna talk bout dat
So direct and honest and yet no empathy
Somebody needs to make an ASMR video of him saying "That's right" over and over
UA-cam: “Did you come back to read the comments?”
Me: “That’s right.”
😂🤣🤣 these “that’s right” are killing me
Am I the 300’th person to like this comment?
“That’s right.”
UA-cam: “why?”
Me:”None of your business.”
Lolll
I like how honest this guy is “I just don’t wanna work” lmaoooo
Back when free speech is commonplace
Nor Priest Lol! Funny how you don’t call him lazy for that comment. Stupid bias lol
@@happygolucky7458 yeah ik

Working is a cult
These fellas talk real swell. Makes me wanna go steady with my best gal
hahaha
The voice and the mask and calm demeanor is scarier than any movie could ever hope
This guys voice sounds like Batman's next villain
it’s lowkey soothing
Napkin Face
And the reporter sounds like Clark Kent, maybe Peter Parker might be around to take some photos
I can see him playing Harvey Dent before Two-Face
Hush?
Criminal: breathes
Interviewer: *Now what do you mean by that?*
lmaooo
Criminal: That’s Right.
🤣🤣
Every time the interviewer asked for clarification was 100% reasonable, after the interviewee was being too vague.
@@jamesevans2507 he wasn't being too vague, he didnt owe them a word xD hes just confirming it since it seems the interviewer already knows all the details like him living in a small town etc
Billy West can do this voice perfect, he uses it sometimes in Futurama. l love it
This criminal sounds so cool and collected.
Interviewer: "Are you wearing that thing because of the coronavirus?"
Him: "That's right."
Brilliant! Lol
Lol
A lot of likes comin' soon! Ja!! Jaja!
Him: "No I don't, a mask won't protect you against Corona or any other diseases"
@@Liasos88 that's right !!!!!
