    Fantastic warm tone, but I was actually equally mesmerized by the economy of his finger movements. Looks so effortless and smooth. Really one with the horn. Nicely done!

    Great saxophones ! Have you played or have some video with The Martin tenor ? What you think about that vintage horns?

    • @saxofonistacr
      @saxofonistacr 5 років тому

      You can't get a better sounding tenor. I compared the sound of my YTS 62 purple logo to a Martin stencil and the yamaha was sold. The yama felt like it it was missing something compared to the martin, I feel like if the Martin resonates a lot more. It has a spreader sound.
      Ergonomics aren´t the best. Tone holes are soldered on with soft solder so if it needs to get solder or was in the past somewhere else, you can end up with leaks on the toneholes wich aren't easy to detect.
      I would love to have a Frankenstein horn made out of a Martin Tube and modern keys. I also found hard to play in tune with any mouthpiece that wasnt a big chamber. As I like big chamber mouthpieces I don't care.

    What mouthpiece and reed combination are you using? I really like your tone and it would be helpful if you could add that to the video's description for all the sax players out there. You sound great on all the videos I've heard by the way.

      These things are almost completely irrelevant. Instead ask him who he transcribes and listens to

    • @andrea22213
      @andrea22213 6 років тому +1

      Xavier You ask him. Asking about reed and mouthpiece is of course relevant.

    • @alanhowell3646
      @alanhowell3646 4 роки тому

      andrea22213 I disagree, reed & mouthpiece selection depends on many variable factors that are pertinent to each individual player from their emboucher, amount of air they push through the instrument, the instrument itself etc etc. If you watch all of Stuart’s videos of him playing different saxes with different combinations of mouthpieces & reeds they all sound like Stuart McDonald. Someone else could play the exact same set up & it will sound like them not him. Xavier was merely making the point that if you want to sound like that it is more relevant asking him who he transcribes and listens to as that has shaped his sound, technique & ideas more than what Reed & mouthpiece he’s using.

    I met you now and immediately became a fan. I play for years in brassband but now fell in love with jazz. Already bought several aebersolds but when it comes to open solos unsure what to play, and the chords do not tell me anything. How do I practice on improvisation. The rest play well. Thanks

    • @PhilipLupercal

      My advice would be, (this is what I did myself and it worked for me) is to get comfortable improvising on some really easy groovy music with little to no changes or something like So What by Miles Davis. Just get used to the different notes of that key and how they sound, just sit down and play for hours over top of the recording and a backing track, just getting used to the sounds of the scale( So what is D dorian then Eb Dorian). Also getting used to accenting the strong notes of the chord primarily 1-3-5. The key is to just play something easy until it is comfortable and confident, just get used to phrasing like you mean it. (Think of how confident Miles is on so what, he just plays one thing, one phrase with perfect confidence, no half assed notes or unsure notes) Basically, the simple stuff holds the keys to playing really complex stuff like this, it's just an expansion of the simpler stuff. The general idea is still the same, knowing what the different notes in the scale/ chord sound like and choosing the one you want. I think phrasing is the most important thing at the end of the day. Just be comfortable and confident (even though that's really hard at the beginning) and start with something easy that you can just loose yourself in. Hope that helps somewhat, Cheers.

      I also bought Aebersolds but did not really understand the chords so I now improvise on what I hear play anything and you will soon hear what notes not to play go with the key signature and use pentatonic scales and if for example a key is in Dm on tenor sax you can use F major as this is the relative minor to everything. If you are classically trained you learn scales up and down very regimented but with Jazz you have to be creative with each scale hope that helps
