Minute Out In It: Jeff Shetima - Zuni Fetish Carver

"Fetishes are part of our religious culture. The six directional animals--the mountain lion, the bear, the badger, the wolf, the eagle and the mole--these animals have the most significance to Zuni." Jeff Shetima has been carving fetishes since he was twelve years old. Held by the Zuni as sacred icons for centuries, fetishes have since been secularized and sold as a way to celebrate their rich culture with the world. I'm gonna take up this craft. Heard of these a while ago and did some research into them, and at this point would see myself having a lot of fun doing it. I already carve intricate figures out of chalk, and focus a lot of recreation of ancient grounstone artifacts, doing it the exact way the ancestors did. It isn't an easy task at all, but I'm at the point where it looks easy, but just need the tools to be able to do so. Some great info in this video in just the couple minutes that it is.
