KSP - Space Shuttle RTLS abort with kOS

  • Space Shuttle Discovery performing a Return To Launch Site abort following an engine failure in Kerbal Space Program.
    The Shuttle is under complete kOS control from liftoff to approach initiation.
    I use my own ascent and reentry guidance scripts, modified to perform the abort.

    Man I never thought about how the slosh could push the tank back towards the shuttle after separation it just goes to show how many tiny problems there are that could cause catastrophic failure

      Rocket science isn’t necessarily hard concepts, just so many of them all at once that they become incredibly difficult to manage and account for continuously and reliably. Complicated, as a result of stacking simple concepts that all affect each other.

    Wonderful video, well researched and beautifully executed. As awesome as this is, I'm glad that this was never something they had to do - shuttle launches must've been scary at the best of times - This doesn't bear entertaining.

      I can't remember which astronaut exactly, but I have heard the Shuttle abort modes described by them as 'stuff to keep you busy while you die'.

      @@dsdy1205 Maybe they were talking about RTLS or even TAL? Cause a couple abort mods are much easier, such as ATO, which was performed on a real shuttle mission after an engine failiure.

    Was there a payload in the shuttle bay? How would/does a payload impact the aerodynamics of the return, and would NASA ever need to dump the payload as part of this maneuver?

      Yes I put a dummy payload, around 20 tons if I recall correctly. The additional mass requires more lift to balance gravity and thus it decreases the crossrange capability a bit. Moreover, if the payload shifts the longitudinal CG more trim is needed to maintain stability and that increases drag a bit.
      In any case NASA would put restrictions on payloads so that the Shuttle could RTLS carrying it without issue, and under no circumstance would they jettison it.
      To dump it you need to open the payload bay doors which in real life is a slow process. The door mechanism was dsigned for vacuum operation so it would likely break if exposed to atmospheric forces.
      Moreover, to operate the doors you need one computer in systems management software mode, which is not allowed during powered flight because you need 4 computers processing ascent/RTLS guidance in a redundant set
      Finally, an astronaut must physically by the right aft cockpit panels to move the switches, they would need to unstrap themselves an move around in the cockpit during powered flight which sounds like a bad idea.

    Have you considered using procedural control surfaces for the split rudder?

      Yes, sometime last year, and I immediately ran into an issue that the real Orbiter had to account for: adding a draggy surface that high up on the tail creates a tremendous pitching moment that must be trimmed out by extending the body flap and elevons.
      Anyway I tried to code a PID controller that accounted for the different speeds at which the surfaces extend and retract, I had a lot of trouble maintaining pitch stability as the speedbrake setting changed.
      I then weighted pros and cons and decided to just keep using those stock airbrakes, no changes to my code and it doesn't affect much the Shuttle look either

      @@giuliodondi For that particular shuttle, I'm not certain the airbrakes are even functional. I've found no appreciable reduction in speed when using them. (Guessing you've had this as well, and thus the side speedbrakes)
      I also tested an A-10-like horizontal split airbrake on the outermost wingtip elevons which seem to work well, and are mostly "hidden" by the elevons that come with the parts pack.

    How did you achieve this realism? What are the mods? Is it RSS? Please provide a link to a mod that changes Kerbin to a more realistic planet (earth)

      Modlist is in the description. Links to all those mods are just a google search away. Bear in mind that RSS will jst give you the real planets, not the atmosphere, clouds or KSC.

    How would the space shuttle abort its flight if it lost all its engine right after SRB ignition and take-off?

      The only option is wait until SRB sep followed by a desperate attempt to separate quickly from the ET, stabilise the Orbiter and glide to a bail-out.
      This is far-fetched, since the SSMEs are important to maintain control and also since the Shuttle would start descending sooner and more steeply since it's going slower than normal.
      This is only valid for the post-Challenger era. Before that they couldn't bail out and, in addition, a total loss of SSMEs would over-stress the structural joints between the Orbiter and the ET followed by destruction of the entire vehicle

      The KSC loks like that thanks to Katniss KSC and a few statics placed with Kerbal Konstructs. The MLP and launch structure are from Modular Launchpads.
      A full modlist wouldn't be of much use because:
      -it's full of mods not relevant to this video
      -I made countless changes myself to get it where I wanted

      I might release the reentry scriot soon(ish) after I have made it a bit more user-friendly, since it was never intended to be used by anyone but me .
      The ascent script is full of code I didn't write myself and thus it's going to take a while to ask permissions all around, I'm not even sure I will be able to ever release it

      @@fenkay5977 frankly, the PVG ascent program in MechJeb does a perfectly fine job, since you can input eccentric orbital parameters (like a 300 x 40 km almost orbit) with an "attach point" altitude to specify where you want to be at MECO.
      But that doesn't detract from this amazing bit of code!

      @@marc_bjn I'll write here so it may be useful to others
      The launch platform and tower are not included in this mod, you didn't ask about those. They're from Modular Launch Pads.
      The Shuttle mod's latest version is clearly labelled for KSP 1.7.x which is pretty old. I'll take a guess that you're playing in 1.8.1 or above, which means that all the dependencies that come with the Shuttle mod need to be updated to a compatible version.
      In particular the reason you don't get part variants could be because of the SSTUTools plugin, the supplied version is obsolete
      In any case if you have problems better bring them up in the Shuttle forum thread.

    Great vid, but dude... Challenger didn’t explode because of “aerodynamic upsets.” It exploded because the primary and secondary O-Rings on one of the SRB’s failed to contain the combustion forces of the booster.

      Everybody including me knows the story of the O-rings, and what the burn-through ultimately led to was structural failure of the ET at the SRB attachments and aerodynamic breakup of the orbiter.
      Looked a lot like an explosion on camera but ballistic analysis on the debris proved that no propulsive force came of it, so it wasn't an expllosion at all

      Just like I know that the first occurence of O-ring burn through was spotted on STS-41D and on 51C the burn-through was nearly bad enough to cause a disaster of its own (incidentally that mission was also launched in very cold weather like 51L).

      @@garrettrussell8137 The shuttle isn't a fighter jet. It can't take the loads of anything other than a straight, ballistic and aerodynamically low stress trajectory in relatively thick atmosphere and at Mach 3. The hot jet emanating from the SRB broke the aft strut and pushed the nose of the solid inward towards Challenger pushing her into the supersonic air flow. The tank contents began to react creating water and heat but not "explosively" enough to damage the shuttle and not violently enough to kill the crew. It was the lateral deflection into the supersonic flow that began ripping Challenger to pieces.

      Yours is a common missunderstanding...there was no explosion, just ruptured fuel tanks and expanding cloud of fuel. When it was moving that fast at supersonic speeds the shuttle was destroyed because of the sudden wrong angle of attack when SRB hits the side of the fuel tank causing them to dissintegrate and shuttle too.
