Mandy Patinkin (the Spaniard) had just recently lost his father to cancer before filming this movie. He channeled his anger into his fight with the six fingered man. When he said that he wanted his father back (in his mind) he was talking to the cancer that killed his real life father.
That definitely explains why that line hits me in the feels every time! He was feeling it and it shone through in his delivery.

To this day, Cary Elwes has fans ask him to say "As you wish" to them. And he does.
I'm just glad I found a man who looks at me just like he looks at Buttercup at the start, but that's absolutely the bar that this movie set years ago.

I always thought this movie had a lot on common with Space Balls, at least tonely. Obviously very different story, but the humor is quite similar
Re: swordfight
Both actors are actors that had to take months of fencing classes to do this scene
And the man that trained them was Bob Anderson.
Anderson was an Olympic fencer for England who became a stunt man. He was the stunt double for Errol Flynn in several movies including the Adventures of Robin Hood. He later was the sword fight stunt double for Darth Vader in the Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi. Later he would be the person who trained the actors for the Lord of the Rings.
This was one of the first times that a sword fight was filmed with limited cuts. The director wanted it to be authentic, and he got it.
Andre the Giant was not a professional actor (he was a wrestler), so he was chosen for an attribute other than acting skill
I heard somebody said - I don't know if it's Bob or someone else - that it was the greatest sword fight ever filmed. I find that strange because watching the movie I had never really noticed it. lol I don't know if it's because it's comedic whatever.
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Both actors had dove so deep into their training that, by the time they were ready to film it, the actors fight lasted four times longer than what the scene called for and the director didn't want to waste any of what they did so the kept it.

As others have mentioned, both actors learned their swordfighting, and they didn't use any mirroring so each of them fought both left and right handed. The only time stunt doubles were used during the scene was the flips.
The dvd extras said they were taught by medal winning expert swordsmen, one of whom worked with Errol Flynn back in the day. They worked on this for 6 months to make it the greatest, and every break in filming, they worked again. Cary Elwes hurt his foot and still did all this fighting. They got so good, the scene wound up too short, so they added more at the last.
I would recommend that you watch "Willow", a George Lucas fantasy film, starring Val Kilmer, Joanne Whaley, and Warwick Davis.
I haven't seen that since I was a kid. Does it hold up?

More Children Entertainment just to let you know but it does have a wholesome story telling vibe as Princess Bride.

I'd love to recommend other movies like The Princess Bride, but unfortunately there are no other movies like The Princess Bride.
The swordfight was choreographed by a guy who worked with Errol Flynn. He later did the blacksmith shop swordfight in Pirates of the Carribean Curse of the Black Pearl.
Well, if the kid really hated the book, his grandfather could have regaled him with stories from when he was a homicide detective in Los Angeles.

@@to12 I love Baron von Munchausen, in terms of humor I think it is what Marichu is asking for. Well Time Bandits too. Legend more deep into the fantasy aspect.
The cast was filled out with many fine performers, including Andre the Giant, Billy Crystal as Miracle Max, Carol Kane as his wife, Mandy Patinkin of course, Robin Wright, Carey Elwes. This was a classic even as it came to theaters and has been ever since. The grandfather was Peter Falk who had a long-running tv detective show in the U.S. and his grandson was a young Fred Savage, also a tv favorite in the 80s.
A true classic, fantastic film & reaction ! 👍

Not forgetting Peter Cook (the Cleric/Bishop), Mel Smith (the Albino) and many other excellent actors. One of my favourite little roles is the woman who boos Buttercup in the dream sequence (she is called "Ancient Booer" in the credits!) played by the wonderful British character actor Margery Mason. She also played the sweets trolley lady in Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire at the age of 91 just after she had performed her last stage role at 90! She had a significant career on stage, TV & film. She passed away in 2014 aged 100.

Peter Falk was always a joy to watch in anything he appeared in. I'm not sure how wide a range he might have had, as it always seemed he would be cast as a guy who was a second or third generation American with a tinge of an accent obtained from his old-country parents and grandparents. I grew up with a lot of guys like that, Italians and Poles, and proud of it. Salt of the Earth blue-collar types, and Falk always captured that aura perfectly, just like he did in this film.
actually this got only a lukewarm reception in the theaters (not negative, but not super) and only took off after it came out on VHS, about 10 years later.

7:30 - the actors were cast, and learned to fence. They had never done it before, and they both worked very VERY hard to make it really good.
I don’t fence myself so I can’t speak to the quality of the duel, but I hear it holds up against some of the best.
I believe they did the original choreography but the director wanted more so they re-use it but made it way longer...
To this day, Mandy Patinkin says that Inigo Montoya is his favorite role that he has ever played.

Robin Wright to this day tells such lovely stories about Andre the Giant. They were filming in the English countryside in rainy cold weather and she was freezing cold, meanwhile Andre was super warm because he was such a big dude. He came over and put his huge hand on her head, and it would keep her warm during those shoots. It’s so funny but so sweet all at once.

I strongly recommend the movie Stardust. It has a similar blend of romance, action, humor, and fantasy.
If you loved this maybe you should give "Willow" a watch. Another 80s fantasy
"Clue" has a lot in common with this: it's another perfect parody with similar humor and flawless timing.
The movie Hook with Robin Williams is a pretty good movie that I think is kind of similar in a way. It's about a grown up peter pan who forgets who he was until Captain Hook steals his children and brings them to neverland.
Also I just saw your Sleepless in Seattle reaction, I think you'd enjoy the movie Splash. It is a kind of cheesy, fun romantic comedy about a man who falls in love with a mermaid in NYC.
Tom Hanks at his goofiest best as well.
Cary Elweys(Wesley) was a very good fencer, Mandy Patinkin(Indigo) picked it up for the movie.
no, Cary Elwes by his own admission was not much of an athlete and he, like Mandy, also learned from hours and hours of preparation in between shots.
I can't think of any other movies like this one. I've seen a lot of suggestions in the comments, some for movies that I really like and some for movies that I don't care for, but none of them combine all the elements this one has.
The last person I saw reacting to this movie on UA-cam got steered by comments into watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail next. Now, it's true that there are a surprising amount of common elements to the two films - both are comedies, both have a medievalish setting, both include scenes from modern (as of the date of filming) life - but if you go into Monty Python and the Holy Grail expecting to see something like the Princess Bride you will be horribly disappointed, and she was. I'm afraid that even the really good movies being suggested to you here might suffer the same fate if you go in expecting another Princess Bride.
Stardust and Shrek are both similar
The movies plays like a book because it is a book with Grandpa reading the book. The movie follows it perfectly. Love this movie, loved the book - and someone read it to me 💜
They may have skipped parts if you think the movie follows the book exactly lol.
The biggest departures? The prince going through his prior suitors prior to Buttercup in the book. The tower full of creatures/challenges the prince keeps that Inigo and Fisik have to fight their way through to get things for Miracle Max. The ending in the books is also not as happy, is all I'll say.
This movie is one of a few that exceeds the book for me.

The sword fight was the actors doing most of it, and they were trained by the legendary Bob Anderson. He was the trainer/sword fight choreographer on this, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and Lord of the Rings, Mask of Zorro, Three Musketeers, and Highlander movie and series, just to name a few.
Once I saw her reaction to the shrieking eels I thought "oh yes, this'll be a fun watch".
These 2 actors practiced the entire time of the shoot, and shot it late in the process. They set out to create the 2 best sword fights in the history of film.
Seeing 'The Princess Bride' for the first time is a universal delight, and watching someone else experience it is another. I've never met anyone who doesn't love this film, and I hope I never do. Thank you for sharing this moment of your life with us.
When Deadpool 2 was rereleased in theaters it was called 'Once Upon a Deadpool'. It was a spoof on this movie. Deadpool goes into the kid's room (Fred Savage now grown up) and ties him to the bed. He then reads Deadpool 2 to him. this version of the movie features an additional 20 minutes not seen in the regular Deadpool 2 movie.
A little after this movie came out, I was in college and took an introductory fencing class, just for funsies. The instructor, who was a former olympic-level fencer, one day brought in her VHS copy of Princess Bride just so she show us that swordfight scene between Westley and Inigo. Instead of our regular class, we spent the hour breaking down their various moves. It's not true swordfighting, because that would be way too fast and much less fun to watch, but it is one of the best film swordfights ever. So, no, it's not just you :)
Similar movie recommendations? Well, this one is perfect, so there aren't any that are just as good. But I would suggest these as similar smart, entertaining comedies: Spinal Tap (also by Rob Reiner), A Fish Called Wanda, and Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels.

Bob Anderson not only was the stunt double for Darth Vader, he also trained and choreographed (sword master) the fights for The Princes Bride, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Highlander, Zorro, and Pirates of the Caribbean. He was a master.
There are some very good suggestions in the comments, but I'd like to add The Dark Crystal, and The Secret of NIMH, both from 1982, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind from 1984 and The Black Cauldron from 1985. All are animated fantasy films.
Excuuuuuuuse me!!!? The Dark Crystal is NOT an animated film!
People almost died making that film. Show respect for the puppeteers that worked super hard and had horrible shoulder cramps from squat walking while fully extending their arm to puppet the elders.

I found this out a little while ago. The same stuntman rolled down the hill for both Wesley and Princess Buttercup. They stuntman rolled down the hill in Wesley's costume, they got the shots they needed and then he changed into Buttercup's dress and did it all again.
Fun fact. When they run toward the fire swamp, if you look you will see Carey Elwes limping. He broke his foot the day before. He is running on a broken foot.
so glad you watched this, its such a simple but unique story. I actually had never seen it til I started my current job. They have a dvd player in our break room and this was one of the movies someone had left for everyone to watch, so over several days and many breaks I managed to watch it all and have enjoyed it several times since.

When it came out in theatres, they didn't know how to market it, and the trailers sucked. The movie bombed at the box office, and only later caught on with home video. Because it didn't make money, not a lot of incentive to make another.
The closest I can think of is Shrek, which, as you noticed, borrowed from this film
I liked the trailer. Saw it when it opened and three other times in the theater, but the theater was nearly empty. I couldn't even convince my family to go see it i n the theater. But they all fell in love with it when I rented it when my Dad was convalescing after a hospital stay, so I had a captive audience.
I think it has a charm and wit all its own.
But another excellent movie that few knew of it saw on its release is Breaking Away from 1979, not a fantasy, more coming of age film, but sweet and funny. It won an Oscar for Best Screenplay, but hardly anyone I knew had heard of it or seen it. I had, and used to rent the movie and a VCR to show it to friends.
One of the reasons it bombed was the fact that the studio didn’t know how to market it. The film poster was of the boy with a book. None of the characters in the book, just the boy with a book.
Can confirm. Never saw it when it came out, but one day me and some friends where in the mood to watch a "hurter" movie and rented this on VHS. Needless to say, we were all blown away.
Being a fan of Columbo, I watched this with a coworker when it came out and don't remember it bombing, if anything, the movie theater we watched it at in San Leandro, California did an excellent job promoting it and we had no problem with the trailer because were looking forward to the movie specifically for the trailer we saw earlier when watching another movie.
After transferring to other commands over the years, everyone I talked to remembered watching this movie in a theater first not renting or buying it. A lot of movies make more in video sales, it's just the nature of the business.
As for making a sequel, I don't think it was necessary and it's very hard to capture lightening in a bottle like this one did, the chemistry was perfect with a beginning, middle, and end all neatly tied up in a pretty bow at the end.
It also came out the same weekend as Fatal Attraction if I remember correctly. It just got lost in all the press about that movie. It didn't help that the studio, which was fully aware of how good it was, just had no clue on how to present it. Honestly, if I had to do a trailer for it now... I'd be at a lost. I just tell people to watch it, then describe it to me. All they ever say is thanks for recommending it.
I know this is 3 years old but the audiobook about the making of the movie is WONDERFUL. It’s narrated by Carey Elweys (Wesley) and the surviving cast and crew. It’s very informative but also very light and fun.
for the sword fighting scene - the actors got really into their practice, and took fencing lessons! only part done by stunt doubles, are the flips, I believe. It's an absolutely amazing sword fight

The swordfight between Westley and Inigo is often cited among the 10 best swordfights ever put on film!
Mandy Patinkin was a trained fencer from Juilliard Drama School but Cary Elwes had no background in swordplay. Bob Anderson, who portrayed Darth Vader during lightsaber battles, spent months prepping both actors for the duel on set but, when they performed the routine for director Rob Reiner, it ended too quickly for his taste and he told them to come up with something splashier. The art department added rocks and stairs and arches to provide more space for stunts, a gymnast was brought in to perform acrobatic moves and the actors watched every swashbuckling film they could find including the work of Richard Lester, Burt Lancaster and Errol Flynn. They paid special attention to 1952's "Scaramouche" based on the Rafael Sabatini novel because its swordfight was the longest in duration. Both Patinkin and Elwes were trained ambidextrously and Elwes broke his big toe while practicing. When they demonstrated the new routine for Reiner, he had them duel for days while he caught the battle from every possible angle. The routine is so widely appreciated that fencing academies today study the scene and reenact it with their students!

You called it right, Mari. They had TWO, expert swordsmen for like 6 weeks training them to use the swords. EVERY day. That's WHY the scene is so good.
If you're a fan of this film, I recommend Elwes' memoir, "As You Wish." The audiobook is narrated by him.
One of my all time favourites, so glad you loved it.
And at the end, grandpa's "As you wish" makes me 😢 every time.
May favourite movie as a kid. Used to make my parents rent it from Blockbuster every week. I watched a special showing in a cinema in London a few years back. The entire audience knew every line. Amazing 😊
This movie contains the 2 best sword fighting scenes I've ever seen in any movie.
The actors did all their own sword work; they got tutoring and practiced for months before filming these scenes. In the fight between "the man in black" and Inigo, stunt men did the flips but except for that it was all Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin. In the fight between Inigo and Count Rugen, Mandy Patinkin used the recent death of his own father as motivation - he was mentally pretending to kill the cancer that had killed his father. Christopher Guest, who played Count Rugen, told Rob Reiner that he was afraid. He felt like Mandy was really trying to kill him.
I love when people try to figure out the movie based on the title.....and they ALL get it wrong, or they're pleasantly surprised watching it, laughing so hard at the dialogue which is so smart, and the characters are likeable....such a great classic adventure comedic romantic.....mix of things!
The guy that wrote the book and screenplay, William Goldman, also wrote the screenplays for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the Presidents Men and a bunch of other movies.
Buttercup, played by Robin Wright who also played General Antiope of the Amazons (Dianna's aunt) in Wonder Woman is one of my favorite actors. She's been in many movies including Forest Gump as Jenny.
Mandel Patinkin who played Inigo in the movie, absolutely terrified Christopher Guest who plays Count Rugen when he delivered his line, "I want my father back you son of a b**ch!", as during filming his father actually died. He went sway for the funeral etc, but came back to finish his scenes, and that was one of the, to deliver a line that cut very very deep with him!

It's funny because she rolls down instead of walking, cracks me up
Had a college roommate that watched this movie EVERY DAY... literally. 🤣

I remember seeing this when I was young and was amazed at how big that guy was I later found out he was a wrestler and he was called Andre the Giant you should find out about him it's a very sad story.
There's sad parts, but in many ways, he lived a life of fame and amazing extravagance.
He's a cool guy. I got to see him wrestle, in person, once.
Andre the Giant is a Pro Wrestling legend - an original inductee into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. His "rivalry" in the 1980s with Hulk Hogan was probably the most famous in wrestling history & they were probably the 2 biggest stars of Pro Wrestling of the 70s & 80s. Their World Championship bout at WrestleMania III in 1987 was one of the matches of the 80s and an absolutely brilliant bit of theatre & hype! Comparing those ya can see Stallone barely below Hulk's chin, and the Hulk's head barely at Andre's chin when the big guy is standing upright. Vizzini is like 5'2 and looks so tiny compared to the Giant nearing 7 and a half feet. Or that Conan the Destroyer picture of Wilt Chamberlain and Andre lifting Schwarzenegger makes him look like a midget. I still can't imagine how big he was because he ain't skinny.
There are no other movies like this, that's what makes it so special.
This is my favorite movie. I never get sick of watching it, and live watching people's reaction to it and enjoying it as much a I do.

So, both Cary Elwes and Mandy Pantankin (?) study for almost a year to choreograph and train their bodies to film the sword fight. They were real swords, though not sharpened, and they trained with two well known masters of fencing who trained the actor for Zorro, Star Wars, and other films. The training was brutal. Cary Elwes talks about it in his book: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales From The Making of The Princess Bride. It’s an amazing book. I highly recommend.
The actors specifically practiced to do the sword fight scene legitimately. IIRC it took them a month or so to get where they could do it
Another one you might like, in terms of comedy, is "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story". It's basically a satire of biopics of famous musicians like "Ray" and "Walk the Line".
The fight between the Dread Pirate Roberts and Inigo Montoya was AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS. Carey Elwes wrote about the time spent training with Mandy Patinkin on choreographing that scene. Initially, it was not long enough so they made it longer. You can read more about the making of The Princess Bride in Elwes' book that came out in 2017, the 30th anniversary of the release of the movie. Its an excellent book.

Peter Falk (who plays the grandfather here) is most famous for playing my 2nd favourite fictional detective of all time (Sherlock Holmes being first, of course) -- Lt. Columbo (of the long-running tv series), the anti-Sherlock-Holmes, who comes across as rumpled, affable, scatterbrained, and harmless, until of course he completely outsmarts the murderer-of-the-week (usually someone wealthy, powerful, brilliant, and arrogant, played in scenery-chewing fashion by some famous guest star). This movie is based on the book The Princess Bride by William Goldman. This is my favorite movie, followed by Labyrinth. Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin were trained to sword fight. The acrobatics were stunt doubles. Cary Elwes broke his toe six weeks into shooting but was afraid he’d be replaced if he said anything. So the sword fighting scenes are on a broken toe.
I think you would really enjoy "Groundhog Day", a movie from the 90's and it is a very popular movie. It is a really funny movie with some heart warming moments. And it is about a very strange and obscure American holiday involving the weather and a small furry rodent that you would find very strange and perplexing. Also a time loop paradox, so there is that, too.
I was taught in theatre class that the ancient structure of comedy can essentially be summed up almost exactly like you stated it: 1) Boy meets girl: they fall in love (obviously doesn't always have to be boy and girl, either.) 2) Some sort of "blocking agent" comes between the lovers (this agent can be a person, distance, misfortune, or almost anything, but it's usually a person.) 3) The "blocking agent" is either removed or reformed. 4) The lovers are reunited (and it feels so good...) 5) The story concludes with a celebration (usually a wedding, but not necessarily.)
The sword fight between Inigo and the Man in Black was the actual actors[Mandy Patinkin and Cary Elewes], who had been practicing fencing for a couple of months before the 'duel'. Only the leaps were done by stunt men...the sword fight was 'real'.

07:36 The Fencing scene is very well designed, and actors take classes in stage fighting/fencing to do exactly this. They (actors, stuntpeople, choreographers, etc) put a lot of work into this, so that it looks good and entertaining.
they trained for that swordfish every day of the shoot. spent months on it with fencing masters. It was the last thing filmed because the director wanted them to have the most time to practice possible. :)

I'm 48 these days and I've been watching this film since it came out. Hands down my number 1 favourite movie and I don't see anything able to topple it.
HOWEVER... this has to have been the single best reaction to Buttercup falling into the lightning sand I've ever seen. When something brings about a 'possessed english' response then you know it's good!
