I don’t think this was so much a Latin freestyle song per se. It definitely was created as a way to cash in on Madonna’s early popularity. But it definitely was adopted as part of the subgenre.
She was only 15 years old when she recorded this song, and she was either the same age or 16 when she made this video. I LOVE Alisha! I have all of her albums!
She was born in 1968. She was 16 when the song/single came out in Feb 1984. But then turned 17 later that year in April 1084. She was 18 years old when the album came out.
Wow same memories making that left turn on 18th avenue to 86th street riding under the subway tracks above and blasting this music. The San Gennaro festival! Those were good times. How time flies
Remember when people used to mind their own business when it came to politics and they went out to be with other people and just DANCE? JOY. SMILES. LOUD MUSIC. MOVING. DANCING. I hope young people today are doing the same thing. I hear from college kids that there are places where they dance. It's just not as prolific as it once was. I know every city and town used to have dance clubs. I hope we are seeing a resurgence. Happy Spring and Happy Easter to all!
I would play this song right when I was getting ready to hit the all night clubs in SF back when this came out. They would play this around 3 am. when the main crowd had left the clubs and that’s when the real dancers came to life and they would play the better underground music and we took back the dancedfloor. For some reason I couldn’t find this record at the dance record stores in SF and maybe it was a year old. But when I went to NYC in 1987 and walked from Times Square to the upper west side to Vinyl mania, they had it for like $3.99 and I bought like 4 copies. They even had a ladder in the store bc all the records were all the way up to the ceiling. Oh and I walked bc it was my first time in NYC and didn’t know the bus and subway system and where all the streets and neighborhoods were. Yes and I was driven to find all the records I needed and willing to get lost in a very exciting city and much like how it was in the video. Those were the days in NYC and so much excitement everywhere and so much going on. I’m glad I got to witness NYC in the 80s.
It really was a great time. NYC has been dying a slow death with the corporate types taking over. They're boring and don't have a creative bone in their bodies. I think NYC will come back very soon. Not sure we'll live to see it but I hope so.
