I’m from Belgium and I even learned new facts! Some more things about Belgium:
    - we have ALOT of smaller groceryshops instead of big shops like Walmart.
    - we have great universities
    - in the holidayseason we organise big christmas events: a lot of different little chalet kind of things sell waffles, hats, hot chocolat, scarfs, ... basically EVERYTHING!
    - Côte d’Or is the best chocolate you can buy in Belgium. In Brussels there is a Côte d’Or factory. You can actually visit the factory ( I did with school 4 years ago) and we could pour our own chocolate, make a label for it and take it home.
    - Cuberdons is a famous candy (from Gent) and its also called ‘neuzen’ which means noses (because of the shape).
    - We have a lot of different types of waffles, but the two most famous are: the ‘Luikse waffle’ and the ‘Brusselse waffle’. The difference between those two waffles is that the Luikse had bits of sugar in it and it is more filling for the stomach. Usually not eaten with any toppings. The Brusselse waffle is way more airy and lighter to eat. Most of the times topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar and strawberries. In almost every city you can buy the Luikse in different stalls but not as fast in restaurants except for in Luik itself. The Brusselse waffle is mostly sold in restaurants, except for in Brussels. Over there you can buy it from a stall as well as eat it in a restaurant. Though there are exceptions in every city.
    - Cool tv programs are: Wie is de mol (Who is the mole) and Expeditie Robinson (Expedition Robinson). Wie is de mol is about a trip people make and on that trip, they have to do challenges. But there is one saboteur which has to stay undercover and still sabotage the challenge (the mole). The other people have to answer questions at the end of the day about the mole. The one who had the most questions wrong has to go home. It’s hard to explain though. Expeditie robinson is when people are dropped on an island and they have to do challenges in 2 groups and 1 of the people from the losing group can be elimintated and so on. Again, I didn’t explain it that well!
    - Belgium is very expensive.
    - Thanksgiving doesn’t exist here. We have christmas eve, christmas day, newyear, new years eve... We also have Sinterklaas instead of Santa. It’s on the 6th of December. A man in a white beard rides on a horse and gives presents to good kids. His helpers go through the chimney of every house to drop the presents off inside. The helpers have a black on there body because of the soot in the chimney. Kids usually place a their shoe somewhere around the house with a carrot in it for the horse.
    - People speak French and Flemish (Dutch) and a little German in the east
    - School is on a very high level
    - Stereotypes which are true most of the times: Belgians love football, we eat a lot of fries

      1. German is also spoken in Belgium. They're often forgotten..
      2. Luik, Lüttich, Lîdje but maybe we should name the city Liège (as its inhabitants say) while speaking in English ?
      3. The lacquemant, a culinary specialty of Liège (although created in Antwerp) : a wafer topped with a orange blossom flavoured sugar syrop. Yum !

It depends what you call "indentify" as, but it is true that a lot of Belgians are passively Christian, in the way that they pursue some traditions, mostly because older people feel more of a relation with it. Being battised often occurs by means of pressure in a family circle, and should we mention : you get baptised when you are just born, so there's no real choice. But more and more people abandon this culture, luckily, since one of the side effects is pedofile priests. We must have a world record on that, or at least a medal.

Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae (literally "Of those the bravest are the Belgians", often translated literally into French by "Of all the peoples of Gaul, the Belgians are the bravest.)

If only you knew that he said that to have Rome send more troops and weapons as well as to add a little salt and pepper to his story. Funny how easily you accept the written word at face value. Caesar had a career to think of as well...

    • @bernarddelafontaine6747
      @bernarddelafontaine6747 4 роки тому +3

This only makes it crystal clear that you don't have the slightest idea of the reason why Caesar mentioned 'the brave Belgians'. Not only did he urgently need more troops and weaponry, but by exaggerating the bravery of the Belgians, he indirectly praised his own military skills. The aim of his positive comments on the Belgians was to convince those in power back in Rome that he, Julius Gaius Caesar, by eventually beating them, was the right man to become the next Roman Emperor.
Moreover, the first 'Belgians' Caesar met lived in Paris. The number of inhabitants of what's now Flanders was approx. 50,000. There he had some trouble to locate his opponents who lived in an ever-changing swampy coastal region. However, they couldn't possibly stop Caesar's army from easily crossing the English Channel to conquer a large part of Brittannia.
He had far more trouble to reach the Rhine, which was meant to become the border between the now extended Roman Empire and Germania. He was met with the same problem as in Belgicas coastal area: his enemies were hard to find in the densely forested Ardennes and the woods forced him to request an additional 30,000 men to cut a broad corridor leading to the Rhine river.

    Belgium 1814
The Peace of Ghent was concluded on December 24, 1814 between the United States of America and the United Kingdom, after the War of 1812. The treaty was signed in Ghent, in the mirror room of the former Carthusian Monastery on the Fratersplein in Ghent, at the time the home van Lieven Bauwens where the English delegation stayed. The American delegation stayed in the Hof van Lovendeghem, also called Hotel Schamp, in the Veldstraat; a commemorative plaque has been attached to the facade of that building to commemorate this

Hi. As a Belgian, pretty good piece you clearly did some fact checking. A lot of people don't bother with that anymore. Thanks for pointing out that the Belgian identity is a lot older that the country. A lot of my american friends don't really understand that cities in my country are a lot older than the country itself going back to roman times in some cases. (Tongeren)

    • @bertrandronge9019

It's strange that they don't understand that cities are a older than the country. Their own history include famous cities like Boston (tea party), Baltimore (second continental congress), Philadelphia (declaration of independance) that were there way (like 140 years) before USA existed.

    • @kodek2000
      @kodek2000 6 років тому +2

@BertrandRongé That's true. I feel like I have to defend my friends in question though. I would think that most americans consider those cities and the founding of "them the birth of the USA". It's kinda fitting that today is the 4th of July. In Belgium cities like Bruges, Antwerp, Brussels and Leuven were entities in there own right before anyone could have even imagined Belgium as a nation. A 140 years isn't that long of a time compared to cities more than a 1000 years old. I do regret calling it a Belgian identity. That is a difficult thing to explain but it sure as hell is alive during the World Cup.

Please mention the importance of Scouting in Belgian culture. About every city or village has one or several scouting groups belonging to several different organizations.
Every Belgian child has spent at least a trial day in Scouting.
Scouting has been incredibly popular in Belgium since its founding and its popularity was further boosted by the late King Boudewijn who was very fond of his experiences at scouting.
Also Belgian not only founded the European Union, but also the modern Olympics. Which we hosted in 1920, 2 years after WWI during which our country had been occupied for over 90%.
The Olympics had been canceled during the war and Belgian was so committed to seeing its initiative continue that we organized it 2 years after the most destructive war the world had ever seen.
We do not talk about it much, but founding the modern Olympics and subsequently keeping them alive after WWI should be considered the single greatest diplomatic victory of my country. Well that and the EU ofcourse.

Wie zei er ook al weer : "la belgique sera francophone ou elle ne sera pas" ?

All should be gratefull for peace that one obtained in a peaceful country. Where you have your bread you should respect and not disrespecting by putting sand in your bread plate. 3) German is indeed an official language in Belgium, but let's get real, it's only spoken by a tiny minority along the border with Germany and isn't really an influential part in Belgium. But sure, he could've mentioned it too.

Yes, as it may one day be the reason Belgium doesn't exist anymore. Just for reference: the Flanders region is partly supporting Catalonia, because it feels it is having the same struggle. It also supports Schotland's call to indepance, for the same reason. A detail for some, important for others.

Don’t forget over 3000 varieties of beer :) Headquarters of NATO, upcoming wine country, Emperor Charles V was born in Ghent, Belgians invented fries, Tongeren is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe and looks like Antwerp could be too, the Cathedral of Antwerp is the highest point of the BeNeLux, Antwerp has the only intact Rococo palace in the BeNeLux, Belgium has famous painters: Rubens, Van Dyck, Matsijs, Van Eyck, Karel Appel, Ensor. Godfried of Bouillon was duke in the now Belgian borders, Jacques Brel and Adamo are Belgians. The Sax was invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian. All Royal palaces have Belgian tapestries on their walls. Val Saint-Lambert is Belgian. The first Belgian King served under Tsarina Catherine the Great and her grandson Alexander I and drove Napoleon out of Paris and was present at the Convention of Vienna. He was almost Prince consort of England and was invited as King of the Belgians after the death of his first wife Princes Charlotte. His Daughter became Empress of Mexico……. Ooh I can keep going

Here's a fun fact: Belgium has 3 official languages: Dutch(Flemish), French and German. However in general we only learn 2 of them in school by default, Dutch and French. German is reserved for those studying languages. On top of this, we also learn English by default. So many people in Belgium are at least trilingual, speaking dutch, french and english after leaving school.

The difference between the two Luxemourgs is one is a Belgian Province and the other is a Grand Duchy that became a separate country but is still referred to as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The name Belgium comes from a region known as Belgica Prima where seven Keltic tribes lived of which the culture and language differed enough to be seen as a separate people. So, Julius Caesar started calling those seven tribes the Belgae.
Belgium is also the seat of the tactical wing of NATO and SHAPE (the latter is the headquarters for the allied forces in Europe).
The name Brussels comes from an ol Flemish name Broeksele. A broek is a swamp with water on top (is also where the English word brook comes from) and sele is a seal or seat. A King had his abode in a swamp and that's why it was called the seat in the swamp....

Belgee? Nee nee, BelgIë :P But seriously though, i love my little country, sure, we aren't perfect, but no country is. I think it's crazy how many history is passing by in our country :-)
Chocolate is indeed ONE of the many good things here in Belgium, but there is a little list:
    -Chocolate
    -French Fries
    -Beer
And yes, believe it or not, but French fries has nothing to do with France. It's just the English term (name). Here in Belgium we just call it fries, in Dutch, this would be "Frieten/Frietjes" :-) I'm happy and proud about that, when we meet someone (from our own country), and we see them eat fries, a lot of the times, we say: Ah, Das nen echte Belg se! It's just an intern joke, it translates (Ah, that's someone who is really from Belgium), because he eats fries. Anyway, jus rambling a bit here :P
Brussel is indeed a big city, it's actually the capital city of Belgium. Antwerp, of course, is also a big city (and the only one according to the people of Antwerp), a lot of people in Antwerp say that other city's are just parking lots :P Haha

Here in Belgium: We have the most weird monument known as Manneke Pis. In English it means Pissing Buddy (OR Pissing guy). We also LOVE soccer (voetbal). Our national soccer team is known as the Red Devils. (In Dutch Rode Duivels). Our waffles are the best. We are also very hard working people, finding a job is very easy. (getting homeless in Belgium can still get you a job). We also LOVE going on vacations to:Spain, France, Italy and all the beautifull parts of Europe.
Belgium is also a very open country, any people from all over the world can visit.
We also like beer and Fries. There are also quite the amount of rich people. Im from Antwerp. But wearing that Belgian license plate can track the attention of unwanted people. This year for vacation we went to Spain for a week. The moment we arrived we left our car alone for just 30 minutes. And 2 windows smashed in and everything was gone. They also accessed the back of the car and took the rest. And i hate to say it,but we were very dissapointed...

The Belgae (/ˈbɛldʒiː/ or /ˈbɛlɡaɪ/[1]) were a large Gaulish confederation[2] of tribes living in northern Gaul, between the English Channel, the west bank of the Rhine, and northern bank of the river Seine, from at least the third century BC. They were discussed in depth by Julius Caesar in his account of his wars in Gaul. Some peoples in Britain were also called Belgae and O'Rahilly equated them with the Fir Bolg in Ireland. The Belgae gave their name to the Roman province of Gallia Belgica and, much later, to the modern country of Belgium; today "Belgae" is also Latin for "Belgians".
Julius Caesar describes Gaul at the time of his conquests (58-51 BC) as divided into three parts, inhabited by the Aquitani in the southwest, the Gauls of the biggest central part, who in their own language were called Celtae, and the Belgae in the north. Each of these three parts was different in terms of customs, laws, and language. He noted that the Belgae, were "the bravest of the three peoples, being farthest removed from the highly developed civilization of the Roman Province,
The Belgian name may come from the protocelta * belo ('bright'), which is related to the English bale, the Anglo-Saxon bael, the Lithuanian baltas ('white' or 'bright', and is the etymological origin of the Baltic) and the Slavic belo / bilo / bielo / ... ('white', origin of names of cities that mean «White City» such as Belgrade, Biograd and Bjelovar), where Beltane comes from. It is probable that it is also the origin of the name of the gods Beleños ('the one who illuminates') and Belisama (probably the same divinity, from * belo-nos).
Also proposed is the etymology * bel (Proto-Indo-European word meaning round, inflated object, "ball" view) in the figurative sense of 'circle, alliance, army' and - * ga ('man, warrior' in French). Thus, bel-gae would mean 'men of the covenant' and the origin of the word would be Gallic. This meaning fits with the description given by Julius Caesar. WIKIPEDIA

Fun fact. In the 1950's or 60's there was a student uprising in Ghent and they occupied Gravensteen castle for several days. Fireman had to siege the castle using fireladders. Oh, and the reason of the students anger? Beer prices being too high.
They should make a movie of this

The greatests contribution to the world that Belgium (or should I say the southern Low Countries) ever made were their great renaissance composers like Johannes Ockeghem and Jacob Obrecht and Josquin Desprez and Orlandus Lassus and many others more. It was the birthplace of western classical music.

belgium also had a king (leopold II) that colonized the congo, and took a lot of riches (rubber) from there for himself and to build pretty buildings in belgium, often forgotten here sadly and the king is still praised ...
