Petrucci is such an amazing prog composer. The guy has written his own history for so many years. One of the most important prog metal guitarists, if not the most important.

Prog METAL, yes, but not prog in general. Fripp, Hackett, Howe, Barre, Gilmour and Lifeson are the only reason he plays that way, along with probably Murray/Smith, Downing/Tipton, Iommi and Hammett/Hetfield.

Why does Systematic Chao get so much crap from a lot of "fans"? I think it's a great album. Probably one of my favorites after Awake and Images and Words.

+jpetrucci I always hear "ooooh they're trying to show off too much with the soloing on that one" or "there's too much wankery on that album" That's Dream Theater's music! That's the type of songs they write! Systematic Chaos is a great album! Just like every other album of theirs.

+BigElectricBull1981 I don't care for Portnoy's vocals, the lyrics in general, and the overall sound of the instruments and the way some songs are mixed. It sounds like it was rushed effortt. It's not a bad album by any means but I consider it one of their weakest and haven't listened to it in ages.
+MusicMaing Wow. I guess we're just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. I consider it one of their strongest efforts. Up there with Awake and Images and Words. I love all of their albums. But to me those stand above their other work. But hey, opinions are like assholes. We all have one.

Would love to see a tab of this method of playing it. There is another tab that seems to be the main one that comes up when you search other sites but the solo especially is "wrong". Which is to say it contains the right notes, but it proposes what looks like a fairly asinine way of fingering those notes which isn't at all natural. It looks like the fingerings he uses here are a lot more playable, but it is hard to tell what is going on with the swept arpeggios towards the end, even at half speed .
I've noticed that in so many tabs over the years, they get most of the notes right, but there is no way in hell anyone could pull off the fingering they use. Most of the time you can just find that same note on the next string and it'll be super close to where you're already playing.

4:35 Anyone know how the hell he plays that?? I have seen this countless times and it is still a total blur, I know it isn't the way Petrucci played it, but this looks way harder to do, and to me actually sounds better than the original lick.
Not sure what AJ does here...if you Google 'Constant Motion guitar stem' there is a video with a real isolated guitar track. To me it sounds like a B string pedal. 14-0-14-15-0. 11-0-11-12-0. 7-0-7-8-0. 5-0-5-7-0. 3-0-3-5-0. 7-5-0-7-5-0. 5-3-0-5-3-0 3-2-0-2-3-2-0. G string 3-4-6. Sounds great like that.

Cool lesson, great to see a closeup of the riffs! Great job. However I think there's actually a mistake in the transcription. At 0:28 he plays (watch my great tab skills): E0 E1 A2 A0 A2 E1 E0 A3 A2 E1. I'm pretty sure that should be: E0 E1 A2 A0 A2 A0 E1 A3 A2 E1. Anyone else notice this?

it only alternate picking
Petrucci does it alternate picking only (before the sweeping part), but and uses a bit of hammer ons/pull offs at times
to anyone trying to learn this you can change the speed of the video in the setting of the video! that way you can slow down those fast parts! i learned this whole song this way note for note!

That tone is specifically set that way. It perpouse is not to sound the same but to be clear in the mix.

Don't think the performance was bad really, the tone just wasn't strong for the solo. Fair enough if this is all done in one take.
Andy is to skilled to be playing these lame dream theatre songs. Why does petrucci get all the hype? Hes average at best.
I usually dont reply comments on UA-cam because people tent to get...weird, but this was so interesting that I couldn't help myselft. I respect opinions and we are not going to dig on that. I just wanted to get your top 5 guitar players, which are above average. Excluding the monster from this video. Wow this has succumbed to a lot of scrutiny. I was kidding people I like them both. I never said Andy was better I like his style better but that's just my opinion. After hearing many of jp's songs from dream theater and solo work I only have like 5 I like. (Here come the JP fanboys)
