      I did, too. At 13 years old I used to pray for them to be very successful. I also ( at that very young age, mind you, because you may laugh) used to play John Lennon on my portable record player and stand up their album,
      “ To Whom It May Concern “, and say to the photo on the record, “ Now, listen, you guys can learn from him if you’ll just listen , and I am praying for you “. 😂❤️- T. Kendall

    This is so great. According to Barry, this song started out with him hearing the chorus line of “how deep is your love, how deep is your love” while they were having dinner. He told them all to get up and immediately go to the studio, where they hammered out the song in a few hours. What’s amazing is that neither he nor his brothers read music and don’t know what the chord progressions are at all. This song has some of the most sophisticated chord changes in all of pop music, and Barry picks them out by ear alone. He really is a genius.

      Oh my gosh! That's pure talent really! There was an interview where the interviewer couldn't believe they write songs without using pen. That's rediculous commented the lady interviewer! And this is what the Gibb brothers do. And perhaps no other songwriters/singers do the same. These brothers are really awesome songwriters🤗

      That's actually their keyboard player Blue Weaver on the piano. Barry is giving him guidance as to what he's hearing, but it's Blue who's coming up with the sophisticated keyboard voicings. Blue was never credited as a co-writer, which would have actually reflected his input and influence over the final form of the song. Barry's melodic sense and instincts are impeccable though. One of my favourite songs of all time. My marriage song, in fact.

    • @stevelunt4309
      @stevelunt4309 2 роки тому +17

      @Evan Hodge Of course you’re right, it’s obvious Barry knows guitar chords. However, he’s not a keyboard player. In fact on the VH1 Storytellers show, they have a keyboard player playing the Fender Rhodes parts for this song, and none of The Bee Gees play any instruments on it. It’s hard to tell from the grainy video footage, but it looks suspiciously like Blue Weaver on keys.
      Songs are written in many different ways, and while Barry wrote on guitar he also used to sit with Blue on piano for the more ballad-y songs he wanted to write. As keyboard chord voicings are quite different in feel from guitar voicings, you don’t always have to be aware of what every chord is in order to be able to write the song. In fact, it’s often beneficial to the process. Many guitar based songwriters do this. It’s crystal clear from the writing session recordings that Blue Weaver was a substantial part of the song’s creation and, in all fairness, should’ve been given a writing credit on this song. Could he have written it without Barry? 100% absolutely not. The brilliance, inspiration and direction was all Barry’s and it’s truly inspirational, but Blue was definitely part of the creative process.
      In fact, had Blue decided to take it to court, he would have won his case (with the recording as evidence). He was a long time member of The Bee Gees band and obviously didn’t feel like that was the way to go, which is fair enough and was his choice. If Barry had come in with the chord sheet and melody already written, and just asked Blue to do a piano arrangement of the song, then that would be different, Blue would have no rights to songwriting credit or royalties. But that’s clearly not what happened here.
      Lastly, I would sadly dispute your estimation that “2 in every 10,000” will earn a living from writing original music. The odds are far, far worse than that I’m afraid, especially in today’s world of streaming rates from the likes of Spotify.

    I was born in 1999 so I obviously never experienced first hand how people either loved or hated the Bee Gees, but coming from a totally blank slate, I’ve completely fallen in love with them. I only recently started listening to them and was just amazed at how brilliant they were. I can’t believe it took me so long to discover them! I don’t mean to sound like a pessimist but the music that is popular in my generation is totally tasteless and disposable, and has no class. No talent and sure as hell no staying power. This just makes me value artists like The Bee Gees even more. They worked hard and they put their souls into their craft. They had real talent. I feel the only thing I can do is share this beautiful music with the people around me and hope they love it as much as I do... pass it on, let it live forever! God bless those brothers Gibb!

At the beginning of their career Robin was a better singer, an equally talented songwriter but almost painfully homely. I don't think either of the twins knew they were only back up singers at the outset but they sure got the message before too long. As I say though, I don't for a minute dispute that Barry was a very good singer just not quite as good as Robin who was phenomenal and to my ears one of the very best of his generation.

    incredible...a masterclass lesson enchasing down a song. The melody is scat sung for anything that fits the rhythm and then there's Barry grabbing the odd word that he's filing away as nice...imagery or sound etc..the magic moment when the verse, bridge and chorus become clear and the energy shift. Biggest 'wow' moment is when the piano player hits that minor on ' ..we BELONG..to you and me'. Great insight into how they kept chasing an idea until they got there..

    • @MeltWithU
      @MeltWithU 3 роки тому +6

      It can be either, or. As a songwriter myself, I can tell you that inspiration can come from anywhere and hit you at any time… Even when you’re sleeping… some little sound, A picture, a cloud rolling by in the sky. You just never know what’s going to be your next hit. Sometimes it can manifest itself as music first, others the lyrics or at least the beginnings of what will be. A lot of musicians will tell you that it’s almost like a fleeting gift from God. Somethings that if you don’t write down or record, will escape you just as fast as it was dropped on your lap or your mind. Michael Jackson used to say that if he didn’t wake up at 3 AM and write down these ideas he got while he was sleeping… in his dreams, that God would give them to Prince. And he was absolutely serious. Knowing that songs that artists will know or at least perceive are radio gold, only come so often. To the point I’ve almost making you feel like you found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Or the proverbial needle in a haystack.
      If you’re interested, I can walk you through it sometime via a video chat or something. Show you how the process can work and usually does. The inspiration that can hit meant any given moment, that not only affects musicians, but also painters, actors, comedians… Pretty much any creative mind. It seemingly always works the same. It’s all about capturing that lightning in a bottle, something that Michael Jackson tried to do by constantly… looking to emulate or surpass the success of the Thriller album. Something he could never do, that really ate away at him throughout his life. Which I’m sure had a tremendous effect on him being able to enjoy the moment of any success he had since that album. Which is a shame.
      Regardless, like anything else in life, it’s all about timing and the talent to finish what you started so that others can enjoy what you create. Feel like they are taking that trip with you through the song. Which is another talent altogether. Being able to write a song that stands a range of emotions, lyrics that can mean different things to different people yeah keep them interested as if everybody was on the same page as to the true meeting that you wrote. Those songs are the ones that last not only your lifetime, but many lifetimes after you. Handed down through generations, for which the words never age. They simply become the soundtrack of a scene or anthem for certain moments in peoples lives, something they listen to and hold onto their entire existence, and probably hear up to and during their last breath.
      It’s what keeps many songwriters writing. Whether it’s one person or millions that you reach, knowing you created it and did… It means the world.

As you can hear here, Barry directs everything Blue does, and Barry is the one finding the entire melody. It’s so amazing. Barry also wrote the great lyrics. This recording right here shows Barry’s musical genius. It’s awesome to behold. I wish there were more recordings out there.

    I expected Barry to come off pushy and domineering on this, as it was a peak song from a period where he dominated the band. But he's really quite collaborative and engaged with what all the others are bringing to the table. He's got his direction and drive, but he wants their input and enjoys the turns the song takes as a result.

      Contrary to what disgruntled and jealous Robin fans tell you Barry Gibb was a very kind and loving man. He was always easy to work with as many who have had the honor have testified. It's funny that only Robin fans talk about him being pushy and domineering but in videos like this it's another picture entirely. In all the many videos, books and documentaries not one single person speaks badly of Barry Gibb. He always receives high praise for his talent and professionalism and courtesy. And that stupid Barry Gibb Talk Show is not kind to Barry at all and I'm sure has convinced many new fans and probably old ones that Barry and Robin were like this in real life. As Barry said when his children showed him a clip What is this? I do lose my temper of course at times like we all do but I have never reacted in this way ever!

  • @Zacomonta
    @Zacomonta 2 роки тому +8

    This is primarily Barry and Blue Weaver. Blue is playing and trying out the different chords to go with what Barry is hearing in his head. Robin and Maurice came in later to help finish the lyrics from what I remember. Someone once said the song should've included Blue in the writing credits but chords do not qualify as being part of the song. Blue also pointed out the songwriting titles were written on a chalkboard and who received credit on the songs depended on who added their names to the songs.
    Maurice was more involved than often credited for being involved and Barry apparently wanted Robin and Maurice to take some of the leads, but Maurice did not like the falsetto leads and wanted to sing in his tenor-baritone voice. And it was difficult to get Robin to provide a lead vocal. Barry is made out the villain by some but as Robin and Maurice seemed less inclined during the falsetto era to provide leads, one must conclude they either recognized Barry had the best voice and they would just provide backing vocals and harmony vocals or that Robin was like Maurice in not having a liking for falsetto. There was a video where Maurice said he preferred doing high harmonies but didn't like the falsettos at all, so if Barry was the primary architect of the songs, perhaps he wasn't writing within their range to do the songs?

As a good comparison try checking out Barry's solo work and comparing it with the Bee Gees and I think it points to him not being as good alone as he was with the twins. That is true of all of them but when Robin made an album, his record company released it at least. (Robin was the only one of them who had even a mild success as a solo artist,) wrote a lot of great songs and I don't suggest he deserves none of the credit anymore than I would say that he deserves all the blame for their occasional missteps.

Unfortunately that was during the era where the Bee Gees were more or less blackballed in the US after SNF due to overexposure so his songs never got played there. He beat Barry to the punch having the first solo hit with "Saved by the Bell" when he left the group. "Massachusetts" was his baby along with "I started a joke" and "My world". When Barry and Robin heard Massachusetts, Barry said their mouths dropped open. Even then the record company tried to throw ball bearings under Robin's feet and stop his songs from being played out of spite for him leaving the Bee Gees. Robin's last solo album released posthumously had several beautiful and heartrending songs that made me cry. Even in its early stage it's already very beautiful. The melody is fantastic. Thank you Bee Gees.

    I think blue weaver who is playing the piano should have been in the credits of this song, his contribution is really relevant!

    What can be said that hasn't been said already. These beloved and talented brothers are still the best of the best, on so many levels.....

    The sound engineer in the blue shirt is like "damned fuck what am I doing here with this romantic crap, I should have worked with Led Zeppelin". And one month later the result was just a masterpiece, Deep is your love is one of the most beautifully written piece of music ever.
    It reminds me of the Star Wars crew in the 70's who used to work with Kubrick or Fellini and laughing in their beard everytime Chewbacca opened is mouth on the set.
    Of course it's just a fantasy story based on a picture, but some artistic project seem so risky to developp because they're flirting so much with the disaster that their creators are probably the greatest artists of all.
    Thanks you the Gibbs brothers for your flamboyant and inimitable legacy.

    I suspect that the pianist should have got cowriting credit with this. I feel he is coming up with the chords - and that will ultimately determine the sound of the piece. Unfortunately it was common, and still is, for people doing a lot of the heavy lifting not to be co-credited.

      Barry's telling him which cords to play.

      @@kthor Nobody will tell Weaver what chords to play, believe me! The guy studied Fuxian counterpoint. Those people don't think in terms of chords. That is for guitar players! Not real composers. When I hear a lot of music written between 1975 and 1982, the best songs all sound similar. And they all show evidence of Fuxian counterpoint. That never existed before with the Beegees in 1975. And it suddenly went in 1982. Guess what, 1975-82 was exactly when Weaver was keyboardist. Get on the piano and see the difference between Weaver and non-Weaver Beegees. The fact he was not co-credited is a massive injustice.

    This has actually become one of my favorites. I hope more of these are posted. Amazing to hear how a Melody becomes a song. Seems to have a mowtown feel I can almost imagine Stevie wonder singing it the way Barry is playing with it.
