Unexpectedness is a large part of humour. The irony of some people here taking jabs at the average youtube commenter as the take away from this video is amazing. A point brought up in this video was that humor is subjective, and that if people don't find your jokes funny, then they aren't the problem. The vice-versa is also true. If you don't find jokes funny and other people do then it doesn't mean your sense of humor is superior. Most people find the jokes funny, that's why they get upvoted, and hence they are funny. Thinking of the average person's sense of humor as inferior is a surefire way to fail in comedy writing.
Indeed. Because ceaslessly repeating the same formula in hopes of being the one most people.glance at in passing, thus attaining a fleeting and ultimately pointless margain of attention from strangers is truly worthwhile, and comedy that will not only stand test of time, but has made humanity all the greater for having been uttered. Seriusly man. Relativism is all well and good, but objective comparisons are what got man to the moon. Dont let post modernity convince you value is an illusion, or you will just give up on life.
@@ineednochannelyoutube5384 I can't nor agree 100% with either one comment or the other. Opinions have a certain value. There are jokes better than others. That doesn't mean that everyone has to like your jokes even if they are great. You can't please everyone, each one has certain tastes. What will happen is that, depending on both the publics' preferences and your ability to tell jokes, they will laugh more, or less, or maybe won't laugh at all. Sometimes it is difficult for some people to fully enjoy English humor because of its subtlety. It doesn't mean they don't get it. Maybe they don't laugh as much and prefer a more direct and more evident kind of humor. That doesn't mean that just random farts will always do the job. However, there are people who laugh at that. Better said, you should check your target to know what kind of humor best fits your style and is more effective for you.
@@superprincesscelena7543 There is nothing subjective about the value of youtube comment 'humour'. Lawyers are actually a popular target of jokes, especially the nasty ones. Also, there is a popular pushback against lawyer jokes, as many attorneys were championing human rights and civil rights.
Lawyers are also in a precarious position where they have to represent their clients the best they can, that's their job. They're not the judge, after all.
"Human rights" are why we in England can't remove serial child endangerment specialists of exotic origin from our shores so those guys can make like a muslim bride. Yeah, I heard about that. This is the problem with internet warriors. Mentioning a potential failing of lawyers is appreciated by all the lawyers I know. They don’t need anyone (with an ulterior motive) to ride to their rescue. But of course the media had to make it part of their ‘people who ask questions are evil’ campaign.
Yeah exactly. I'm just a law student, but we all have criticisms of the legal system and government and that's important. When you make fun of lawyers you're punching up because they have an exclusive access to law, and provide an essential service to democracy with a large financial barrier that honestly doesn't need to exist. Keep doing it, I don't think it hurts human rights lawyers :/ law is kind of an old and powerful institution.
Do “How not to write Alternate Histories!” JP: You could talk about the complex politics of an alternate world, you could explore the lore and differing philosophies of these alternate societies, or you could stay in one country the entire show, never explore the world, and make sure an awkward love triangle hijacks the entire plot! Even hamfisted Liberal politics can be snuck in with over the top references to how terrible a certain R word is; I’m sure the audience won’t mind!
Lol random can be used quite well, if you prime the audience with a good tone and setting that thrives on it. Jojo's bizzare adventure is 99% this, because the characters take the absolutely absurd shit as seriously as possible the audience is free to revel in the absurdity, while also being gripped by the plot.
That's a reason why Invader Zim works so well even today. When the humour isn't dark, it's random but in a way that still feels like making sense. Its humour was almost 2 decades ahead of its time and it's a must for random jokes.
You people confuse random with surreal, random is something happens just because, no context, no meaning, a chicken burning from no where is random any person with half brain can write it; surreal is something that happens in a unconventional way but still making sense, and still having a meaning and context that's why is called Jojo BIZZARE adventure, surrealism is hard to write; people that say LOL so random half of the time is just having a hard time getting the point, and of course if they don't get it, it is the show's fault.
The trick to jokes about racism in modern day is that the joke is on the act of racism not on the person. The absurdity of being racist is easy to focus on and you can just dial up the absurdity to suit your needs. Say you're being heckled by someone with darker skin than you. Making the comeback of "My skin's lighter than yours so that makes me the better person." Is such an absurd statement that you can't take it seriously. And you can just keep dialing up the absurdity by being ever more literal with the statements. Its also easy to keep your targets varied by leaning into the "but who is actually white" argument. If you do it right you can argue against every European ethnic group's inclusion into who is white. Primarily because grouping people by skin color is an mostly an american invention and until recently, historically recently, a person's race was synonymous with their ethnic group.

He may also be making the point that (although JP did advocate for some middle ground) JP is playing it too safe (and ironically) playing into the hands of what the current establishment deems to be (un)funny. (This would mean he rejects JPs claim to be on the middle ground - as false). At least I think thats what Eddie's point was. That said take this explanation with a grain of salt. Old lady's daughter:mom I keep telling you that he was the bus driver.
"Humor should punch up, not down" is bad advice, but it's within a stone's throw of good advice. Humor should go where humor can be found, but if your choice of jokes reveals you to be an asshole, then be prepared to have people call you on it. And "I'm a comedian, I'm supposed to challenge boundaries" is not an adequate excuse; people understand the difference between pushing boundaries and being an asshole. So, if you're fine with being called an asshole, then go ahead, be an asshole. Otherwise, be more selective in your jokes. And if you haven't updated your body of jokes in 30 years, don't be surprised if young people are less than receptive to "what's the deal with gay people?" material that killed in 1987. But the advice that "humor should punch up, not down" is wrong because it claims a social or cultural agenda to humor that simply isn't there. Punching up means you're less likely to be an asshole, but even then, it's far from certain; I could make jokes about the death of [despised rich person's spouse], and while that's punching up, it would still make me an asshole. And punching down can work too. The day 9/11 happened, it occurred to me that, if only we'd left King Kong atop the WTC, he could have swatted down the incoming jets. I kept that one to myself for a LOOOONG time, but I still hold that it was quality humor, even if it was punching down.
@patrick howard I think punching down to areas like gay people or starving kids can work as long as it's set up right or of the character is supposed to act like that because then you could be laughing at the character being an asshole than the terrible joke itself. Any way I don't have the talent to pull that humor off.
Just the freshman year? Hah! Amateur! I have repressed 80% of my entire high school experience! **Big smile, but in my head there's a voice screaming in fury and pain**
The basic idea behind humor is a benign violation of norms. If it’s edgy or dark, it plays on the panic response. While I enjoy most bwa videos this one is a little sub par.

I know his trying to be sarcastic but it takes more skill to make a joke on soft targets than because it easy to get laughs out the hard targets with no negative reaction from the audience but to make a joke about the soft targets that hits is like walking on egg shells and would take more skill to do tactfully than a easy joke. Like an Amputee sex joke I heard a comedian make (can't quite remember it since it was years ago) all I remember is it involves a car. Also I will play devils advocate here(as side note I never had a 4 chan or reddit account ) If his talking about the Ok sign or anything of the like with nazi thing then he didn't get why 4 chan found it funny. The joke is never pretending to be Nazi's is funny but how much of a joke the media is and why they are willing to publish fake stories with no research. The Ok symbol is now a sign of how much the media are failure and the people who digest it mindlessly are as well. Also I doubt the people making these jokes would be surrounded by real Nazi's. Normal people the media labels nazi's but aren't yeah but actual neo-nazis who's numbers are so small they they aren't even worth mentioning nah. Also a real Nazi that identifies as such in those places would get mocked to the ground just like the extreme left so they wouldn't stay long.

Disney still makes good stuff- which makes the dichotomy of their good stuff and their awful stuff even more baffling.
If they’re making insane amounts of money in a medium that relies on other people giving them that money, then they must be doing something right to entertain that audience.

Exactly. There are lots of fish in the sea and different tastes for each one
I agree too, especially since a lot of the comments are also just having fun.

Humor writing? I just complain about my existential dread and follow it up with a "Zappers".

Half of me while watching this video was thinking "this is hilarious!" while the other half of me was like, "do you need a hug bro?"
Future archaeologists enter a temple. In the room furthermost from the entrance, they see a chest. The chest is labeled “The totality of 21st Century humor”. They open the chest, hesitantly. Within it is a single tablet. Written on the tablet is a single phrase: “Wait...What?”
Hahaha I've found you.
internet love triangle man is the only thing getting me through 2020 smh
Every time he says love triangle this intro comes to my mind: ua-cam.com/video/xgNJ9r8S17Q/v-deo.html
@@txorimorea3869 Thank you for introducing me to this video!
30 minutes in and he’s already compared comedy to Stalingrad. This is gonna be a good video.
"30 minutes in"? The video isn't even that long.
catlover67803 I refuse to correct myself. My mistakes will be remembered but so will I.
Here is a joke:
A haircutter goes to an old ladies house to cut her hair.and the old lady's daughter was there too.
Old lady:how did you come here?did you drive?
Hair cutter:I took the bus.
Old lady:the bus huh?I no longer ride these ever since what happened last time.
Hair cutter:what happened?
Old lady:well I was really tired and I needed to sit somewhere,so I nicely asked from a young man to get up and let me take his seat. He looks at me and tells me"are you nuts old lady?"
Old lady's daughter:mom I keep telling you that he was the bus driver.
eh, I mean at least it’s a real joke I guess
Lol, 😂😂😂 I'm actually laughing inside
Not gonna lie I was half expecting it to just go on and on and have no punchline at all just to screw with me
Real talk though, the intro is how I used to make jokes.
"lets just repress that with like my freshman year of highschool"
Hey look, funny quote!
Ngl, 3:05 hits different when Cthulhu destroyed my computer cord right before my big computer science project was due :/
Remember, there's a difference between race jokes and racist jokes
“Let’s just repress that like my freshman year of high school!”
What happened in freshman year, JP
*What happened*
*R E P R E S S*
4:12 Ah yes, I remember reading a story where a chicken was set on fire...
And it was unironically funny.
The sponsors having it's own story and lore is one of the most creative things I've seen a youtuber do. I love it

What’s JT’s beef with words beginning with H
I'd guess he's got a local accent heavily influenced by french.
"Let's just repress that like my freshman year of school"
*mood*
Just the freshman year? Hah! Amateur! I have repressed 80% of my entire high school experience!
**Big smile, but in my head there's a voice screaming in fury and pain**
Fools! I have repressed most of my memories of both middle AND high school! I have the high ground!
Ahahaha...ha...

Never punch down.
That's what kicking is for :)
Sorry but I can't get over JP saying "kneeheelism" and "necromacy".
Neh-chrome-acy
The basic idea behind humor is a benign violation of norms. If it’s edgy or dark, it plays on the panic response. While I enjoy most bwa videos this one is a little sub par.
As a Zoomer, I have little to no regrets laughing at the chicken on fire.
Based off JP's humor notes, I've finally understood why whenever I feel like I relate to someone's depression, I call it a "mood". Because depression is funny :D
Also I will play devils advocate here(as side note I never had a 4 chan or reddit account )
If his talking about the Ok sign or anything of the like with nazi thing then he didn't get why 4 chan found it funny.
