This Abandoned Japanese Racing Game is a Masterpiece

- While the market is currently dominated by Wangan Midnight and the wait for Nightrunners, 20 years ago a group of developers had already made a breakthrough in the Highway Racing subgenre with Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3, the 4th entry in the TXR series and an often forgotten masterpiece which deserves more recognition

My apologies , I forgot to put the wanderer fix at first when the vid released but it's there now, sorry for that
Still have my copy and I still know the chest to get miles on your car to engine swap it
I think import tuner challenge aka tokyo xtreme racer 4 for xbox360 was 3 with all the fixes.
@@psgodson4424 It's a completely different installment in the series.
the series got sold to microsoft somewhere down the line and they rebranded it as import tuner challenge for the xbox 360
i posted this before watching the video glad you mentioned it
This game definitely the mega buffet of Shutoko Battle Scene, with 600 rivals that has personality, first game with actual car brand, and ofc the vibes with soundtrack such a well blended that holds up for 20 years.
>first game with actual car brands
That's false, but go off.
Sadly it's a buffet without Honda.
@@ScribbleVEVO i think he means on the TXR series
@@nicolasgamer14yt74 Shutokou Battle Online, a PC-only online MMO based on Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero in 2002, had licensed cars.
Thus being the first TXR to have licensed cars. NOT Kaido Battle.
Its jot the first gamee with actual car brands
2003 was one of the most stacked years for racing games:
Need for Speed Underground 1
Midnight Club 2
Burnout 2: Point of Impact
Project Gotham Racing 2
ATV Offroad Fury 2
Auto Modellista
Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3
Midtown Madness 3
F-Zero GX
Ford Racing 2
F1 Challenge 99-02
Mario Kart Double Dash!!
TOCA Race Driver 1
R: Racing Evolution
NASCAR Racing 2003 Season
Hot Wheels: World Race
And finally, the best one of all:
Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue
(Ignore the fact that 2003 was the year that Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing was released)
The 3 years of 2003, 2004 and 2005 produced the most amount of banger racing games during the golden era of the racing game genre. God, I miss those days.
From the year 2000 up to 2010 some of the best games ever made were made, unbelievably a golden era of gaming in general
I’m so glad you listed PGR2 and ESPECIALLY Midtown Madness 3. The maps (multiple) they had in each game were fantastic, and 3 was so special with lesser known cars, and the missions being more varied than GTA games and just about any open world driving game.
If I knew anything about coding or modding, I would do anything I could to get Dice or anyone over at Microsoft to bring it back. I wouldn’t even care if it had DLC or a season pass, expansion cities… I’d be all for it, if they really have fun with it and make it stand out from the staleness of the modern racing era. Arcade racing games used to be so unique and have endless unlocks, Easter eggs, secrets, etc
I love the Horizon series, NFS, kinda the Crew, and Gran Turismo, but that sandbox feeling of causing mayhem through the city, or playing as a stuntman, private eye, chauffeur, rental dealer, delivery guy, ambulance driver, international hero…
You can easily tell the love, passion, and dedication to car enthusiasts of all ages made phenomenal games in this era.
I could endlessly talk about my love for the PGR series as well, but my comment is already so long
@@nah6898Couldn’t agree more. I stopped playing games for a few years when I first tried the Xbox One in ‘13. FM5, and no other big launch titles, and with my friends going on and on about Cod Ghosts, Titanfall and Destiny, it already felt like the end of the era to me, and I wasn’t ready to leave the 360 and Wii behind. (I now have PS3 but didn’t until recently). The pack-in games even for the original Xbox One were a joke. We got Dance Central Spotlight and Zoo Tycoon reboot (i guess?) and Dance Central “4” didn’t come with any songs. Every song was DLC.
2016 I felt like some games starting turning back around, but 2017-2024 has been letdown after disappointment after anger after frustration.
Sorry for the rant, I just feel like most people will just keep buying the AAA titles at full price that keep the “Finished-A-Year-After-Release” games to keep being pumped out, and with the consequences being mass layoffs and less studios, I think it’s going to be a while before it turns around again, but possibly won’t.
BARBIE HORSE ADVENTURES MENTIONED 🗣️🗣️🗣️‼️‼️💯💯💯🔥🔥‼️‼️‼️
Auto modellista came out in 2002 not 2003
GUESS WHAT Y'ALL
YOOO FR! WE GETTING THIS BEFORE GTA6
We’re so back!
KEKW Devil Cappuccino, Kei cars getting v8 swapped is absurdly funny but epic
470HP in a car weighing like 1500lb and is the size of a jumbo shopping cart.
I loved this so much playing this game i got a turbo rear wheel rear engine smartcar. Thing's a fking gem!
Night runners seems HEAVILY inspired by this and I’m all here for it
It is inspired by the txr games and wangan midnight anime.
TXR is getting a comeback next year
No more an abandoned series
IT'S ON STEAM AT 2025!!,,
Jesus christ i'm half way trough the game and just learn you can press "select" to boost the car...
That boost reduces power output real fast though. If you set the boost in setup to max your car will be f*cked within 1 minute.
Fun fact: import tuner magazine actually helped launch the first TXR in the u.s. with putting their name on the game (hence their later release as well) and many articles and advertisements that sprawl across their magazine.
Sadly attempting to play Import Tuner Challenge itself requires an Xbox 360 and the disc itself 😢
Its been playable on pc for probably 2 years now. You also dont need a disk....
Little did we know, Genki was cooking something devious 😈
This video summary is super good, especially 3 is one of my favorite TXR games. Also Night King would be the funniest and bizzare requirement for a wanderer. I mean what first gear redlining, while honking in the Hagashi area.
There's one fact left in this game tho:
- With Honda being absent, the Wanderer SPEED BOX [the former leader of the SPEED BOX team who supposedly drives a NSX] now drives a Lotus
Thank you for doing a video on this game. Still remains one of my all time favourites. Another Wanderer that has a wacky requirement is Electric Shark in Tokyo Stage 2. He wants you to crash into the left and right barriers repeatedly with your hazards on. Cheers dude!
"With a much higher graphical quality by comparison to its predecessors.."
Umm.. in terms of environmental detail, yes, but not in terms of car models. Because my god are those car models jank. And arguably TXR 2 looks better than Zero in almost every regard.
Also engine swaps are unlocked at 1246 on odometer, not 1000. 1246 is about 2005 km. I assume it was meant to be 2000 km equivalent but it went slightly over. It's not the only conversion mistake in the game...
Apparently there's recent news that Genki is developing a new Shutoko Battle / Tokyo Xtreme Racer game that they say will come out this year, please spread the word!
How did you cheat too add money? This game is too grindy to have multiple cars. I play on pcsx2
This was an awesome game, and it had such a wild car list. Where else are you gonna find a 140-chassis Mercedes S600, an Isuzu VehiCROSS, or an '82 Pontiac Firebird, the latter not a Trans Am or even a V6, but the 2.5L Iron Duke four cylinder with 92 horsepower!
Don't forget the Pantera GTS with a 351 Cleveland
With Genki being absorbed into Bandai Namco's development team for Maximum Tune i can see how as Bamco gains more licenses they could have crazy American and European cars participating in the Wangan.
My absolutely favorite game in the series! So many small secrets quirks in this game. Like if you watch a replay of a battle with Midnight Cinderella a secret song plays over the replay. Theres the NA Secret turbo that is absolutely busted. And even the ability to make a painted carbon part have the same weight as a raw carbon.
TXR Zero was my introduction to the TXR series and TXR3 is just as good. It might have its issues but it still holds up imo. There's lots of good gameplay mechanics, cars for you to play around with and the handling is okay once you get used to it. As a Wangan Midnight fan it's probably one of my favorite games I recently found out. Great video as always Dove and props to Sharicite for pushing this video out.
This comment was made 14 hours ago in a video that released in 1 minute ago
thank you ms Erika, my PC certainly appreciates the gratitude (cpu keeps hitting 100% util for this edit)
@@Sharicite I will prayge for your PC next time lol but thank you for your hard work, genuinely amazing to watch through. ❤️

Import tuner challenge was a great game too.
There is such a small subset of people in this world that would find "Devil C" funny and i am so happy that I am one of them.
Ah yes
My introduction of Shuto Expressway racing
Still my jam to this day
Still playing this game today, it's still a BANGER
I just wish grinding in TXR3 is easier, but i guess i need to learn how to cheese opponents hahaha
cheats are the way
13:55 That’s your emulation causing the issue, not the game.
Hey DoVe, how you doing?
So, gotta comment before it's too late and you don't find it 😅
So, do you think it would be an interesting challenged to play, say, GT4 with only maxxed out cars? Must be interesting the tactics needed to not go broke, and don't get cars that are too fast.
Anyways, love your videos, and i'll probably go back here to say what i liked the most in it (helps the channel ou too, so two good reasons).
Just found this at my local retro game shop for the PS2, what a way to get hyped!
The best part is reading about each racer, it adds charm to imagine who you are competing with
Haven't trying this game yet as I had played Street Supremacy before and had beaten all wanderers, but that was my only TXR game I had played before. Maybe I'll give a try bcuz a patch of this game finally came out and easy for everybody to beat the game without significant issues...
I had a friend who was in love with this game. At the time, I wasn’t in to it. I was more into GT3, NFSU, and MC2/3. Looking back, I can see why he liked it so much.
Played the shit out of this game 2 years ago, went to Japan last November and the taxi ride into Tokyo gave me ptsd, Awesome game.
It's coming back!!!!!!!!!!!!
At last, the best of the mainline TXR games. Although not without flaws, personally the much better balancing, pace, customization, not too simplistic but not overly complicated upgrade system and gameplay combined with a rather diverse cast with unique backgrounds, it's easily a huge jump from TXR:Z, which seems to be the game that most people think of when it comes to this franchise, but the ruthless AI and engine damage made that title much less inaccessible than it had any right to be. If it spent a bit more time in the oven and had a slightly higher budget to avoid some of its shortcomings (I also wish there were more music tracks), I'm certain this game would have been near perfect, but, as it stands, it's an amazing game nonetheless. Drift 2 and TXR 3 remain the peak of this series for me. Let's hope that Nightrunners will sort out its flaws by the time it comes out, as highway racers are something we're truly lacking these days.
BLUR on PS3 and 360 was severely under-rated and overlooked too! Got lost in a lot of other released at the time but it was a frickin amazing online game!
Genki just announced over the past week or so that they'll be releasing another installment in the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series
My favorite out of the series. I still own my ps2 copy 😁
Wait until he finds out….
Brother we all have found out lol
This game is not quite abandoned even to Japanese gamers, though. Have you heard of the hidden Taxi Peugeot 406 hidden in the Japanese version? It's a pity this and TXRD2 were the peak before its bankruptcy.
Speaking of Genki, some Japanese got a source that their staff are onto something recently. Not sure if it's related to Shutokou Battle, though recently there's a collaboration between it and a Japanese drifting game called Drift Spirits.
Do u mean the "Taxi" movie bodykit in RBC1?
year ago genki posted images on twitter of a new office floor full of pc's, hopefully its not all just for doing outsorced work on mobile games
Apparently a new Shutoko Battle (TXR) will be released this year!
It hasn't been officially announced yet, but someone found that information on the blog of Route KS, which makes body kits for the NSX!
@@rotlila3170 damn youre right, not much is said about it though so i still fear the worst: another mobile game lol
@@tritekk I hope not, but they are not a big company and I too have a feeling it will be another mobile game 💀
The bosses of this game still cause me PTSD and I love it for that.
god damn I loved this game and this whole series, I wish they make a remake or a new one
Aka Shutokou Battle Zero One (01). I'm still playing it on my PC using PCSX2. Man, honestly, the story of street racing in this game is way deeper than the mainstream street racing games like NFS series, which makes this game so underrated on its era.
It's not a bad alternative if you want to experience the Japanese tokyo metropolitan expressway scene back then while waiting for Midnight Runner full release.
Someone get mrxbas on the line
he is busy pushin the gigachino in txrd2 atm lmao
Yea to do a proper review
Best racing game of all time!
New trailer 2025 game it's revived!
What do you think about Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift for PS2/PSP being the spiritual sequel to Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Racer: Drift?
"build from the ground up"
this phrase always makes me laugh xD
Hands down this was one of the best racing game I ever played
2000 km or 1242 miles to unlock engine swap is really harsh. I've beaten first stage of tokyo, osaka, and nagoya and I'm not even half distance yet
If you have played the physical one, you can consider open the tray and leave it at you win screen (it increases mileage and also race wanderers without any requirement (you need to flash them first the open the tray asap)).
If you feel enough just close it.
@@wedakrishna1069still gonna need literal hours though, pcsx2 atleast you can speedup but with actual ps2 you pretty much have to leave it on the entire night while you sleep
It's crazy impressive how much detail was put into this game
Zero & 3 were the BEST Tokyo Xtreme Racer games. Drift & Drift 2 were dope because of the addition of rally but TXR3 was addictive!!
Best Video ever ❤
Loved this game and the series....still have them in my collection, along with Racin Lagoon❤🤓
if you want another forgotten gem from sega, check R-tuned the ultimate street racing
there was a good old time when i bought used ps2 to only play this game
9:55 The "NA1" and "NA2" did make appearances in the highway battle games. I used them quite a bit until you get to the R34.
Man after playing TXRD2, i just can't comeback to this game for some reason
There's abandoned gem also, it's called C1 battle grand prix, this game also made by same developer, genki. But sadly there's no English translation for this. I already finish the game two times.. Like I mean I don't speak Japanese but all i do just memorize the menu lol
I do plan on trying it out at some point for myself
Ah yes. The spin-off which is more track oriented.
Really liked that game, especially with 4WD cars that can be used as great drift cars.
That means you already beat the legendary ??? (UNKNOWN), right?
Racing Battle C1 Grand Prix. When the elements of Shutokou Battle & Kaido Battle meet Gran Turismo. I love that game because the car customization features are more detailed than in Shutokou Battle & Kaido Battle. Plus, you can also find some famous tuning cars like Cyber Evo Lancer (in real life, that car driven by Yamada Raman if you watched video OPTION). This game kinda reminds me of the old Genki game during the PS1 era "Kattobi Tune".
I also love the RBC1GP soundtrack. Because the music genre in that game is the trance, something you can find in Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune Arcade (Namco).
but yeah dove as i had mentioned you have a lot of potential as you cover more obscure/underrated games
if you can grab an og xbox or mess with the emulator you could try covering PGR1-3 and both Rallisport Challenge games
buh I’ve seen you in vinesauce comments section a few times
Txr series was my fave and back then noone ever knew what I was talking about lol
I finished TXR3 recently after finishing TXR0, both with all wanderers beaten, TXR3 is a pretty good highway racing game in general, the handling is a lot better compared to the TXR0 handling and there are a lot more rivals and customization options. Although I still play TXR0 because I really like some aspects of that game such as the early 2000s vibe and the custom boss cars. Great video DoVe 👍
…and Forza manages to have the one same Wing option for all of its games, a broken Editor and no Button for using the Battery in Hybridcars….😂😂😂
Great Video mate…☝🏻
Man I love this game soooo much, still got the og case and disc! Same with NFS U2
Hello your video popped up in continuance with what was playing before this. I have ZERO for PS2, and I just dropped my first 2 videos for it. I'm loving it. Good Day To You.
Probably my favorite series of video games! The Knight, Rook, Bishop are absolute nightmares to deal with... white knuckle, furious nightmare to deal with
i'm commenting again hoping dove sees this, but how did you use cheat engine (i never could, but i NEEED yen to even progress without resetting) as i have a potato car..
Im coming from the future to say: its not abandoned anymore, TOKYO XTREME RACER IS BAAAAACK!
Bro I grew up on the Tokyo Xtreme Racing games, the OG, TXR0, TXR3, and the drifting games too, TXRD and TXRD2 ! I still play these games to this day. I 100% the TXR series except the drifting games (they are hard af)
Also on TXR3 start off with the FTO or the lancer are good starter cars.
I can see why The Tojo clan went Bankrupt
*TEN YEARS IN THE JOINT*
Made you a
Play wangan midnight for the ps3!
i still play this game ( tokyo Extreme racer 3 ) this game give so much adrenaline.
7:17 Good Lord, that's one fugly-ass hunk of shit.
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, TXR was a cool series, and I enjoyed my time with TXR3. But, I always felt like the peak of this series was TXR2 on the Sega Dreamcast. That game had me hooked for weeks, and I feel it had the best soundtrack of any TXR title. Would be nice to see this series come back, along with other dormant arcade racing game series like Ridge Racer, Daytona USA, Burnout, Sega Rally, Outrun, etc.
One of my fav racing games . Finished the whole game and loved it !
1:13 ahh yes, Johnny Silverhand long lost brother
Tokyo highway battle Extreme is and will be my favorite...PS2 race game.
I just picked up TXR Advance for the GBA and it's actually a lot of fun for a sprite version of the game.
Actually just fired this game up a couple days ago, and my go-to car for long straightaways is a i6 swapped cappuccino. Also don't remember how I did it but I have the wanderer with the 100,000,000cp requirement beat, on ps2 so no patch. After you beat everyone there's one last race where you have to race a ghost version of your car.
My computer is shit so it only runs dreamcast emulators so im stuck with tokyoxracer 2. I went with a 4x4 lancer. Damn near softlocked myself till i learned how to use brakes for a forced entry.
Got the backend ride height all the way up, soft apring/shock, the front all the way down hardest aprings/shock. Tap the brake and it whips like nobodys business.
@:27
"...a whole slew of reworks for its handling"
I'm already grumpy hahaha. I've played so very, very, very many hours of this game since it came out and the handling has always been infuriating. I think it was one of the earliest games that actually considered sidewall flex for tires, but it was done to comical levels that only made it easier to yee-yaw yourself into a mess with upgraded rim size. It kept the same float but exaggerated steering response. Add all that to the limited draw distance and you're fighting the car just to respond to things that pop in too late for you to appropriately respond to the faster you go. I hate it so much but still love this game
Night runners was definitely inspired by this game..
Another good game is nfs underground 1 and 2. As well as burnout revenge. All great games.
When that Boss Music kicks on, Good lord your blood starts pumping!
Getting flashbacks seeing Jack Knife again. It took me forever to beat that guy.
Ahhh yes. Shutoko Battle (the Japanese name) was gloriously fun on the PSP too.
6 months later, genki is bringing an possibly reboot of the series! Tokyo Extreme Racer
Looks like wangan midnight maximum tune.
Is this made by namco?
I used to play all the racer games back on PS1,PS2 and original Xbox
in the OG PS2 game after a race you wait on the win screen tell it goes to cinematic mode your car driving around after your race and eject CD and go to school for the day by the time you get home and put the CD tray. back in with the CD in it you car now hat the millage needed to swap motors your welcome to anyone playing this on a actual console these days and not on a emulator XD. id like to add back in the day you had to use Game shark to get to 100 mill to 100% the game witch i did........and the last race oh my god that feeling when you beat it like nothing else.
Wow, haven’t thought about tht game in a while; it was sooo 🔥🔥🔥 used to be up all night looking for specific racers
10:40 Pick a good "finale" car, beat the game and you get a massive payout... then mess around. Save prior to maxing it out and testing, reload if you dont like it.
Eu tive que comprar um PlayStation 2 só para jogar esse jogo e o Fatal Frame…jogos excelentes que não saíram para a nova geração do PlayStation…
I was in the like 5th ot 6th grade when this came out. Loved this game. I remember getting smoked by some Datsun, not sure if I ever got past that opponent.
I remember Tokyo highway battle for PS1 a unknown gem
Miss this game. I gotta find my copy of import tuner challenge.
Completely remember the hard grind of this game to 100% and trying to find every wanderer
Don't duck that smoke! You're not a fireman. Race em they hit you with them high beams lol
I wish I could make a new game like this and call it L.A. Extreme Racer
I'm still waiting for the video of Racing Lagoon
Especially, there's already a fan translation patch version. So we can now play while understanding the storyline of it.
So this is basically Street Supremacy on PSP but with a lot more content and for Console ??
good job with these videos about Genki games, i'm really enjoying it
Theres a new shutokou battle planned to release this year
