      I don't understand this episode. They never really explained. The dog walker wants to be downwind from the dog. Why? Like, yes, we understand they use those tools to tell the direction of the wind. Why do they care about the direction of the wind wasn't explained.

      @@pikekekeAs i understood it, the dog has to be downwind of the general direction it is searching in, like trying to locate someone lost etc. The dog handler, however, is beside the dog.

    Did a few sky dives many years ago. The dropped item is called a WDI - Wind Direction Indicator, I think - and is used to determine strength and direction of wind. They do it where the WDI lands in relation to the target and then use that to tell people when to jump out of the plane. As someone else said, I was doing static line jumps as a total beginner.

    Wind Direction Indicators are used to determine where a static line (chute opens immediately after exiting the plane) jumper will land. It is lightly weighted crepe paper that falls at the same speed as a open parachute. Throw it out on the first pass directly over the desire landing point and on the deployment pass make adjustments according to where the paper landed. Toilet tissue; we never used because it falls much slower than the open parachute so it is worthless for this purpose. It must be calibrated with weight to fall at the same speed as the person under canopy. This was used mainly with round parachutes which stopped being used recreationally in the early 80's. Round are really only used by the military now days for mass deployments.

  • @nicholastriscott1696

    Is it because the dog shouldn't be allowed to sleep on an expensive mattress and the parachutists practice landing on cheap mattresses?

    Real skydiver here:
    They are called Wind Direction Indicators (WDI), looks like toilet paper but it isn't, it's lightly weighted crepe paper, or from more sophisticated materials. Mainly used for round parachutes, to see where can they jump the students and also for ram air parachutes in accuracy/speed accuracy discipline competitions where the upper winds are very important to know.

    • @JanTuts
      @JanTuts 10 місяців тому +1

      That's what I was still wondering too!
      But I think they specifically mean professional dog handlers, like with a Search & Rescue Tracking dog, or bomb/drug/... dog, and that the point is to keep the handler out of the scent path, and so the handler should try and stay downwind of the dog.

    • @myladycasagrande863
      @myladycasagrande863 10 місяців тому +3

      Search and Rescue dog handlers need to know which way the wind is blowing because it can move the scent trail around. The scent SAR dogs typically follow is in the air, and has a similar consistency to smoke.
