- How on earth have I never visited Ullscarf?! The hill itself could be seen as a little boring in certain conditions but the views are absolutely STAGGERING! The star of the show on this particular route, however, is of course the small but mighty Eagle Crag. What. A. Hill!
As always, thank you so much for watching; I appreciate all the support you have shown me over the years!

My first set had around 3000miles on em before I needed to get new ones. : )
Absolutely love when you say, "Hey heardies"
Well all that clag and bog, no not for the faint hearted and southern softie (me) Sunday nights are just meant for a whisky and comfortable chair watching you showing me where not too tread.. Thanks Glen for another fantastic video.
Borrodale sounds like a place from the Lord of the Rings!!
Thank you Glenn. Another masterpiece 👌 P.S. Please don't be quiet, we love the chat 😊
Hi herdy
Nature is a mysterious and wonderous thing. I agree with you, paths I travel are beautiful and I am in awe, yet it is NEVER exactly the same view no matter how many times traveled there. Somehow, mother nature makes it a new experience each trip and that is beyond fabulous! Lucky you to be in the perfect place. 🙂😊
It really is, thanks for watching 😊
Absolutely brilliant so professional..
Is that a half or a pint 😂 another informative vlog ☝️
As you say the views are great on here but must be unbelievable if there
I am tuckered. Worked a ten hour shift then went for a wander about the hills and dales with you. Whew!!!! Lovely vistas today, thanks so much!! From Ontario, Canada
Some paths are so close to the edges with steep drops makes me cover my eyes and peep through my fingers. Brave to walk along these. Then you say, "its straightforward " Am trying hard to believe you. 😂 I do trek for miles but those edges are something else.😗 Great walk and fantastic rugged views.
It's not as bad as it looks, honestly😊
I hope you only paid for half a pint for that drink!
Nice route, after hitting Lining Crag on the C2C - Grasmere common decided that it would be extra boggy that day and made for crap going down into Grasmere. Wonderful area though.
Love the channel mate found you about a week ago and already watched a lot of your stuff and will 100 be doing some of your trips myself always on the look out for more adventures to go on myself
Welcome aboard! 😊🙌
I did Ullscarf (from Steel End) for the first time early on a Sunday morning a few weeks ago, just me a few Herdwick and loads of Skylarks , the views were awesome and I absolutely loved it.
Underrated .
I love watching your adventures! Beautiful locations!
Loving these videos, haven’t been able to get to the lakes for a few weeks because of the Great British summer weather. So nice to get my fix watching your vids. Keep up the good work 🎥
just brilliant
Having hiked a lot in the Lake District I had never done the High Rigg, Low Rigg hike until last week. Inspired by your video of that walk I ventured up there. It was a beautiful morning & the views spectacular! So glad I did it. Was also nice to know where to park, where to start the walk (at the ladder stile) & to recognise landmarks from your video. 😊 Thank you
Really enjoying these smaller fells Glenn, I'm a bit guilty of sticking to the "big boys" myself but after a few recent trips over Scoats Tarn and into Lingcove Beck I'm really seeing the appeal of the lower, quieter fells.
Great series, look forward to the next one.
absolute love these walks...truly the best there us..i dont watch tv...just watch blackcrag endlessly...first travelled to the lake district as a teen at school from teesside in 1993,where i first saw skiddaw, and climbed langdale pikes..been living on the south coast since 1998..however we stay at kendal every year so we have a week of absolute bliss . from scout scar to skiddaw...my favourite view is just by serpentine woods overlooking kendal towards helm hill ..and the howgills and just a bit futher around where the scafells skyline is in view..brilliant footage, photography and all around the best there is.
Beautiful coming from the south west it's lovely to see what's up north.
im a teessider whos lived in the south 30 years..im homesick everyday..but prefer the northwest..absolute nothing in the south can match the lake district, pennines, yorks dales etc
Beautiful views. Thanks for uploading!
Excellent video but could you recommend a book on the Wainwright walks? We’ve visited the Lakes but have now found a love for the area and walks but need an educated guidance. Any fear of ticks walking through the bracken?
Thank you 😊 there's a link in the description to the box set of guide books, 1 to 7.
Another fantastic video, beautiful scenery.
Some great views: 10:42, 12:24, 14:58, 16:10, 17:20, 18:11....can go on and on, just a myriad of wonderful sites. Thanks so much for sharing.
If you freeze at 33:36 there's a pile of wood by the fence, right of frame. You can just see a couple of grotty uprights that are all that there is of the stile you missed on Ullscarf. No tread remains. Didn't enjoy crossing that last Friday! Loving all the videos - thanks so much
Excellent views.
Could I ask what footwear you wore that day plse.
Steep hike but scenic. Their are not too many switchbacks in New England.
I did exactly the same thing on this route 2 weeks ago.. missed the path completely so freelanced up the hill.. was fun but exhausting 😅
Thanks for this, followed this route up to High Raise yesterday. The views were fantastic.
Eagle Crag is the most dramatic fell if you approach it from Stonethwaite. Went there two weeks ago for an evening walk for the first time: very moody and dramatic. Sergeant's Crag is good as well, but Eagle Crag... The top third of the ascent is astonishing once you get past the stile.
Edit: I found the path first time going from the river and up the eastern slopes of Eagle Crag- but it is less a path and more a clear straight-line clearing of sorts through the bracken with occasional earthy / muddy patches indicating a path. Going up this path follows a stone wall which is always to the right on the ascent.
Love your videos Glenn! Keep up the fantastic work!
Can I ask what camera you use for your UA-cam videos? 😊
Hello from America! Thanks for a beautiful hike
I did this walk on Monday following your map only I tacked on High Raise as well in late September/October conditions in late July. First time I've done any of them and loved the ascent of Eagle Crag. I can also confirm the descent down from Ullscarf is still an extension of the infinite swamp of despair across the other side of Blea Tarn. It was even wetter than what looked on your video. As for that descent down the steps to Stonethwaite extra care needs to be taken 49% gradient at one stage!
I found the first part of the ascent from the bridge to Bleak How, the most exhausting 20 minutes of my life. Until I tackled the scree on Great Hell Gate, from the Sphinx Rock to the top of Great Napes below Westmoreland Cairn, on Great Gable.
Thanks Black Crag, good vid. That pub was closed when I last visited!
You would love the Mourne Mountains in N.Ireland
I think I would definitely love to sign up for one if your tours, bucket list 💙
Keep on Journaling ❤!!!
Very convenient for me that I’ve been looking at doing this walk next week, thought I’d check YT for some extra tips and you have the perfect video.
Love you channel and have recommended it to many people. I'd love to see some of the photo's you're taking while you're walking
beautiful. Knew you were going up Ullscarf and I said "why oh why is he wearing shorts and shoes?".. I mean, that full on mud fest and getting splattered, honestly I chuckled but only because it happened to hubby too :D love your vids, keep em coming x
Absolutely love your videos. If you have the link to the pink jumper and size as I think I’d be the same as you. Would love to see your Whitby break it’s on my to go list xx
It's a shame the walk up and down is so boggy because High Saddle looks like a wonderful place to camp.
Very enjoyable Glenn. I haven’t walked any of those fells so I reckon I might use that OS link. Many thanks for all your efforts and fantastic to see you and the channel doing so well. 👍🏻❤️
Again you've done in one walk what I did it two, bioth of them late expeditions. I needed to build up both confidence and experience to tackle Eagle Crag direct, which was exhilirating (as well as twitchy!) It came on to rain quite heavily on the ridge so after Sergeant's Crag I made a very direct and very cautious descent to Langstrath to get back. In the woods nearing Stonethwaite, I saw a flash of red that I think was my only actual siting of a red squirrel, but because of the rain I had my spectacles in my waterproof pocket, so all I saw was literally a flash of red (curses). Ullscarf was the main object of my penultimate Wainwright walk, via Greenup Ghyll and the edge and down by Great Crag. A grey October Sunday and a strangely memorable descent that left me two fells and one walk, to be postponed until the following spring.
Hi Glenn. Were you up there last Sunday, 9th July. I was walking almost the same route with my son, but in the opposite direction. Coming down from Grange Fell and Great Crag, and starting the ascent to Ullscarth, my son saw a figure walking away behind us to the left. I'm wondering now if it was you? My son thought perhaps someone knew a path less boggy than the one we were having trouble finding?? Seems not, though!! 😂 We went to the same pub at the end. I asked the barmaid if we'd won the test match. Turned out we had, but I didnt realise she was Australian until she'd answered!!
Really enjoyed this video, Glenn, and especially enjoyed you enthusing about the fells, the scenery and everything Lakeland. I too have the same enthusiasm, indeed walking the fells is my obsession and I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms as it's over 2 weeks sine I was last across. In fact I've promised myself that no matter what the forecasts I'll be heading over for the day on Saturday or Sunday.
Another cracker did same hike apart from doubling back after getting to ulscarf and came down by lining crag and came through the valley 👍⛰️
Another fantastic VLOG.
Can't help the feeling, watching, that just 1 slip and it's gonna be a very long way down!
Thanks for showing me the fells i still need to hike. Quality work once again and the pub was open this time, always a welcome sight on a hot day. Ended up in that pub after hiking Glaramara Allen Crags on very hot July day...two pints of Wainwright went in no time.
Hi Glenn, been watching some of your older vids and can you get Dina back sometime, just watched the one where you had tea at The Pig,such an awesome walk and having Dina as a wondeful companion added to the wander so thankyou, take care and look forward to the next one, oh and watching and following from Tasmania 👍👍🤩
Do you deliver the photo to Switzerland?
You realise after a few years that sure the 3000ft club is all fine and you get great views but often the better views are from the lesser known mountains of the big boys themselves. After many years now of hill walking and mountain hiking some of my favorite walks have been the sub 2000ft hills because of the views they offer. Out of all the big boys Symonds Knott reigns supreme and very rare you see anybody on it.
Great job on the video as always I do be very impressed with the production of your videos.
Question is a GoPro 11 a good buy for a new lad looking to buy something for when I go over to do a few hikes in the grand canion etc
Good to see I'm not the only one who went through hmthe bracken and over the wall on the ascent to Eagle Crag....lol
Great area, best part is its absolutely nothing like being around the likes of Cat Bells!
Wish they'd mend that gate .It fell apart on me 2 year ago nearly summersalting me over the wall lol😂 great vidio take care watch for faulty gates 😅
great vids as always bring the dog again
Love your vids! Keep up the great work
Glad you like them! 😊🙏
I went up there myself a few years ago and went out to Eagle Crag as you did at 12:29. I got a great shot of the tree that's in front of you without leaves on it, and it looks like it blends into the ghylls on the other side of the valley. I'd like to say it was intentional, but it was completely by accident 🙈😂
Awesome video as always. Thanks
Thank you 😊 🙏
@@BlackCrag The last time I was in that pub was 23 years ago. Had mash and cumberland sausage.
Another wonderful episode Glenn! I'm liking the short 'ASMR' clips too, as that is what we, essentially, hear when hiking our own wild environments.
I can relate to the last-minute, splattered 'Bog Foot'! Especially when you don't have another pair of shoes in the car!! 🥺
Bring on the next installment! 😁
What a beautiful place
So Finn, one of my three favourite dog vloggers let her human do this great walk on his own. But he never disappoints us, does he! And anyhow, better he collects the ticks than Finn. ❤
Who are the other two? I’m guessing Blue Dog and Billy the Rockstar! 😀
@@burrianaUK
What did my mother say? "Curiosity killed the cat" :)
Yes, it's Blue, but the other one is Diz. I call her Duchess.
Have a great day!
Did a lot of this walk last year, beautiful.
Awesome! A fantastic & kind of 'secret' route, Eagle Crag, Long Crag, definitely scared spots 👍
Thanks Will 😊
Wow! Another amazing video. The scenery is just breathtaking. I haven't done these so another for my to do list. Thanks ever so much for all the great ideas.
Thank you 😊
I like the geology, even when you make it up 😅
Cumbria Way in 2025, baby! 🤞😎
Love❤❤ what else can i say❤❤
The head on that pint you want to get it topped up mate!!
Awseome!! Quality!!
Your videos are awesome 👏
Your enthusiasm and love for the Lakes is a true inspiration for many. Those small Fells are so often underestimated. I am still concerned that you have somewhat of an unnatural attention towards Herdys though!
As you say the lake district is stunning and looks so much better in real life than from the video which I know is difficult.
Blimey, need a flake in that Pint at the end!
Why are there no trees there?
Thank you for this video as I was going to do the exact walk on Saturday. After watching this I am going to leave it till we get a drought next summer :o)
Don't blame you 😂 or try winter when it's completely frozen
Excellent video!
great video Glen
Eagle crag and the surrounding falls are amazing. The falls are incredible.
The amount of times me and my wife say “hey heardy” 😂
Wrong footwear choices? Use the Mikey method. A simple concept which involves hitting the fells with 1 boot and 1 hiking shoe. Best of both worlds innit.
Yep, I actually did that yesterday!
In other news, Ullscarf is a bit of a surprise eh! Never done it from that side, I went up via Harrop Tarn and Standing Crag in the snow, boring to be on, mind melting to look out from!
😂
You have some of the best starts to your videos - so tranquil!!
Great video
A good tab
Can’t beat getting back from a walk with wet muddy feet, a glow in yer cheeks and a satisfied tired feeling. Makes the well earned beer taste twice as good. Brill as usual Glen ma boy! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Getting giddy for August 11th and a long weekend in my favourite place.
Thanks David 😊 🙏
🥰 Good exercise.... And beautiful views... Nature is amazing 😍
A great route.....I'm finding I love your vids for Wild camp research. I've spotted a location I'd love to camp on most of your vids . 👌. Ps. My Black Sails Winter camp was awesome, another one I knicked from your vids 😎👌
Absolutely stunning Glenn...Love how you are very informative on your vids pointing views out ...keep up the amazing work you do ..thanks again 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Did this one a few weeks ago and made exactly the same mistake at the start! We doubled backed on ourselves and came down the valley via lining crag, avoided the bog fest! Why didn't anyone put bog into room 101! 🤣
That sounds a good call. What was it from Ullscarf back to the path down from Lining Crag, 10-15 mins? I bet it was a nice walk back down the valley 🙂
@@burrianaUK it was, we nipped up high raise before heading down the valley as well. lining crag was nice and impressive from when your just below it!
I concur the photo is superb now getting it framed.
Thanks Robert, appreciate the support 😊 🙏
I was up there just over a year ago, completely clagged in. Never did find that path! Alas, I bagged the summit in the end.
Keep up the great work, Glenn. Fantastic, engaging and informative as always!
Ryan
love the energy of your videos... greetings from Slovakia... safe travels mate !
Great and informative video as always. Ive yet to do Eagle and Sergeants Crag but the terrace path round the side of Eagle Crag does look exposed at first but I think you by-passed that by finding another path slightly higher up after your detour to Wainwrights viewpoint. Interesting option if thats the case. Thankyou
that took myself back many years ago. i was just wandering my way toward High Raise from Ulscalf. i didn't make it. boot went into mud to the top of full length gaiters. i looked down as the dark liquid just started to make its way over the top of the gaiter inside and filled my boot. after extracting myself, demoralised i made my way back to the campsite, swiftly followed by the pub.
Great upload bud, shots and atmosphere are spectacular! What a great upload!
