The wall is representative of the wall we build around us to isolate us from the harsh realities of life. And The Wall album/ movie actually explains a lot of the dark political overtone in much of Pink Floyd's music. Here the first brick laid as his father has gone overseas to the fight and die in a war when you're born. Although it's not in my top three for Pink Floyd albums it is a masterpiece. ( like all others). Later on as the teacher tries to embarrass him by reading his poems, the teacher recites a few bars from Dark Side of the Moon. The whole concept behind this concept album is executed brilliantly. ✌️ 🤠🏞️🐂
Oh man, what an awesome choice! This is my all-time favourite album - it came out the year I turned 12, and my cool older (17) neighbour gave it to me for my birthday. It absolutely Blew. My. Mind. Seriously, I listened to nothing else for weeks, digging into each and every song - at age 12 I couldn't understand all the themes, that came later, but it absolutely hooked me. As I grew older, it spoke to me more and more, and when I saw the movie it was mind blown time all over again. Highly recommend watching the movie if you can, it's a trip and a half, and you definitely should check out the whole album. Another awesome pick, and another morning made better by spending some time with you guys - much love from Canada!
It was born the same year I was. I never discovered them until the movie came out a few year later tho. I wouldn't have been allowed to watch it at that young age but, & it wasn't until I was at a neighbours house when I was about 7yo I got to watch the VHS. Never looked back, been my fav band ever since... And its kinda shaped my life a bit too, as currently if I'm being honest, I've built my own wall. I've stopped talking to almost all family & friends, kinda shut myself off from society, and all the incidents in my life that's caused me to end up here, I think of them as 'another brick in the wall.'
The local radio station played it in it's entirety late one night and I recorded it onto cassette tape and listened to it absolutely every single day for a year. Massive massive influence on my teens.
On a trip with Floyd, that pretty much sums up their music, if having a bad day, turn down the lights, sit in your favorite chair, put on some good headphones and put on some Pink Floyd, crank it up and get lost, all your troubles, the bad vibes of the day, just fade away as you enter the Floyd Zone. A huge YES on watching the movie. IMO it's an absolute masterpiece, and it goes a long way towards understanding the album. The album and subsequent film mirror the childhood and young adulthood of Roger Waters, whose father was killed in WW2.

Went to Pink Floyd 1980 Wall tour on UA-cam and watching that now and just got to Comfortably Numb and decided to come back to you guys and say how great they were! That 1980 tour which was only performing the wall was outstanding, dynamic, such an almost theatrical performance, musicianship is stellar bcuz they nail everything as it sounds on the album almost to a T. Just thought I’d let you guys know I was inspired and really when you get time watch The 1980 Wall tour. It’s old, grainy but brilliant! Now back to the show and Comfortably Numb live 1980!!!
The baby crying you heard is Rodger Waters, lyricist and co-founder of the band, being born as his father is killed in world war II (the plane crash you heard in the beginning). His life is the inspiration behind this story of a rock star's descent into madness. (With a nod toward Syd Barrett whom it actually happened to). The album chronicles the events - Bricks - that caused his mental collapse.
I'm sure someone else already said it but, this is about the war and stuff. It's a work of art and something you kinda got to listen to all at once to really get the big picture. It was always depressing, but, I've found it's got more depressing as I've aged. This one really gets you thinking. Good stuff guys!! :)

1979. 20 years old. Just bought the album. Put it on at my sister's house. Ears loaded. Only time to listen to side one. Tasted good. Sides 2, 3 & 4 that night. Repeat the next night. Repeat til tonight.
My daughter's father & I took her to see Roger Waters in Philadelphia last year. She turned to me and said, 'Now I really understand why you love going to concerts and Pink Floyd' lol. Made me smile. Nice review 🙂
This is the best double album ever created. Yes like others you really need to watch the video a couple times to really grasp the concept! I was fortunate to see Roger Waters perform this album in it entirety. There has never been a concert like it and never ever will be again! You need to watch UA-cam clips of Rogers 2010 Wall concerts. The projections are out of this world!

If you've only listened to the albums, my suggestion is: watch The Wall: The Movie original VHS or DVD original version. It honestly elevates great music into a great piece of pure Art!

You can also look at the wall as what Pink's (Bob Geldolf's character in the movie) mind, his psyche, his sanity is hiding behind and he's building it higher and higher as the years go by. Do see the movie. It has some amazing and trippy animation.
I was lucky enough to see the original Wall concert in LA. Mail order tickets only we got so lucky 10th row dead center! Buy far the most unforgettable concert experience ever! They built the wall during the show they had pyrotechnics and the curtains caught on fire. They had to stop the show put it out then they restarted where they left off. We ask people who had tickets to the next show if there was pyrotechnics and they said no
No you guys are doing it right. The album itself is a movie, it tells the story. The movie just brings it all home and should be watched after listening to the album (and the movie came out after the album).
I didn’t get the wall when I first heard it in 80 or 81. It wasn’t until I saw the movie that it made sense to me as a story. Then later I saw the movie again tripping on mushrooms it made even more sense. One of the best concept albums of all time.
First time I watched it was on shrooms when I was 15 and it was mind blowing and super depressing ( in a good way) An emotional Rollercoaster. But I had listened to the album +20x before ever watching the movie.
By the end of this album I started to wish Roger's dad had survived the war, by the time The Final Cut was released I was considering building a time machine to go rescue him. Btw, I bought both albums. On vinyl. Some of the lyrics are so contrived it's hard to take them seriously. Could anybody love me? Or is it just a crazy dream? Yeah. That.
Promise guys don’t waste your time trying to figure out what this album is about song to song. It is a 26 chapter story. You MUST listen and watch all 26 chapters!!! Individual songs you will never ever figure it out. Prime example. MOTHER every single reactor on the net thinks it’s about this great Mother!! No no no it’s not. She is a bad helicopter mother. She is a big reason he built the wall!
For the love of everything great about music PLEASE listen to the album start to finish, and let the music and lyrics take you on the journey Pink Floyd intended. Let the music paint the pictures in your mind BEFORE watching the movie. The movie came out several years later. It pales compared to how the album unfolds in your mind. You don’t need to see the movie to understand the story.
This is gonna be fun :-) Watch the movie, but definitely not first... watch it after... like reading a book, let your mind wander free for the first time (or two)... it's worth playing with some herbals and playing the whole album start to finish (obviously not on youtube)... Where does one track end and the next one begin??
Great choice! And I don’t think you’re missing anything by not watching the movie first. Just listen to the ongoing development of the music and take from it what you will. The movie is probably better afterwards. As with so many “music videos” it pre-assigns the listener’s mindset and emotions. The music existed before the movie, not vice versa. Yes, the music tells a story, but the story shouldn’t dominate the musical experience.

9 months late so you may already know the reference. The Thin Ice is about the subjects early(?) school years. Another Brick In The Wall Pt-1and Pt-2 is the part of the subjects life where his father has left to fight in Europe during WW2 during his mid(?) school years. The whole album is a story. You guys give me so much, I hope this is something in return: As I understand it, the album is basically autobiographical, and conceived by Roger Waters--the angrier harsher, yelling vocalist. David Gilmour is the more dreamy, monotonic singer, and the guitarist. The album charts a rock star's journey from birth to insanity, and perhaps redemption. It starts at his birth, and chronicles all the abuses that drive him insane: an overprotective mother, an absent father, abusive teachers, thugs, a cheating wife ("We have a call from a Mr. Floyd" ::click:: "HE hung up! Why does he keep hanging up?"), demanding fans, unscrupulous managers who drug him, etc. Each abuse drives him father into insanity--and builds The Wall that separates him from peaceful, trusting connection. Floyd was known for their extravagant productions on tour. When they toured behind this album, each song had more huge bricks appearing between the band and the audience, building The Wall, until the climax destroyed it. All the best to you guys.
The recording of the Wall is prior to the film, it is not the soundtrack of the film. Later, they did the live concerts and with the material they finally made the film.

So many people are under the false impression that this album is the soundtrack to the movie which could not be further from the truth. Watching the movie first would be the worst case of chicken before the egg.
I think reading a little bit about Syd Barrett is a good idea even before watching The Wall movie. Then watch the movie. Then every time after, you'll always get more appreciation not just for the lyrics but the music sounds themselves are sound effects of the emotions. Agony, contemplation, youth, age, lifespan meaning...the instruments narrate the feelings as much as they lyrics.
Roger Waters father was killed in WW2.... at the Anzio beach in Italy. The events in a persons life both good and bad can be bricks in our own wall. Things can be both good and bad at the same time depending on which side of the wall you are standing.
I know you have heard this a lot even in these comments buuuut, you need to watch the movie The Wall.✌️the wall he referred to is the wall we build around ourselves to keep the world out. All the songs on the album are just another brick we add to that wall. The movie let's you into Roger's mind.✌️
You guys should check out the movie The Wall it will bring the album together though in the movie there are a couple parts in the beginning of the movie that have parts of the song when the tigers broke free (which is a great song also) in it which help clarify some of the early parts.
Yes, so this summer in July in my state recreational marijuana becomes legal and I’m going to have a screening of the movie the wall in my backyard with a bunch of people. I’m so looking forward to it. I’ve been planning it for a year now and it’s going to be epic.

The first time I heard this album, I wanted to run out and drag people in off the street so they could hear it also. Very powerful album, and I love it, but I won't listen to it if I'm feeling down. The movie is very good, but also depressing.

This is my favorite album by them. It is genius. It is mostly Roger Waters story. The problem with genius is true genius artists are assholes. He can be insufferable for his art and it fractured the band and led to its demise (Sorta). But you can't deny the sheer artistry of this band and this album. Even with all of Roger's faults, I love his music and I will always love Pink Floyd. David Gilmore is the more likeable member of the Band and his genius is more humble and down to earth.

He would refuse to roll on surfaces that had not been cleaned with Vim, which made it difficult for him to move around the apartment. Brian tried to explain to Chester that it was not necessary to use Vim on everything, but Chester would not listen. One day, Brian came home to find Chester rolling around on a helicopter made entirely from shampoo bottles. Brian was amazed at the ingenuity of Chester's creation, and he suggested that they go for a ride in it. Chester was hesitant at first, but Brian convinced him to give it a try. They flew high in the sky, looking down on the city below. Chester was amazed by the view and he realized that there was more to life than just rolling around on the ground. No the wall is largely biographical of Roger waters left. There are many meanings, for me the wall is about those barriers we build much like a mask, what we keep in and what we let the world see
I've read that Waters came in with the album all written and didn't want any input from the rest of the band. They only performed this album live once as Pink Floyd. There is a video of it on UA-cam
The Wall is my least favourite Pink Floyd album. Which still makes it stand-out head and shoulders above ninety-nine per cent of the rest. The reason why I'm not too keen on "The Wall" is because it's too autobiographical. It's a Roger Waters album with the rest of the band as back-up musicians. Thank any god you prefer David Gilmour and Rick Wright were there to counter Waters and still managed to shoehorn the Pink Floyd sound into the music. Else we would have ended-up with "The Final Cut". Which we eventually did nevertheless. Cheers lads. Always good to see you.
Do yourself a favour, and do not watch the movie before you have developed a personal sense of what this album is about. Then listen to the 1980 live concert. And only then watch the movie.

The guitar rhythm in part 1 sets a real feeling of menace and dread. I love the way Floyd can just pull you into the scene they are creating.

Love this album. It's an experience and adventure, like all Pink Floyd albums. I'd say yes, watch the movie. It will help this album make sense.

i struggled the first few times i listened to this album on 8 track, (insert old joke here), but now, just a masterpiece!
This is gonna be fun :-) Watch the movie, but definitely not first... watch it after... like reading a book, let your mind wander free for the first time (or two)... it's worth playing with some herbals and playing the whole album start to finish (obviously not on youtube)... Where does one track end and the next one begin??
Great choice! And I don’t think you’re missing anything by not watching the movie first. Just listen to the ongoing development of the music and take from it what you will. The movie is probably better afterwards. As with so many “music videos” it pre-assigns the listener’s mindset and emotions. The music existed before the movie, not vice versa. Yes, the music tells a story, but the story shouldn’t dominate the musical experience.
So true. Watching the movie first would have been a horrible mistake. Songs are left out remixed and reordered. Also too much going on to fully appreciate the music on its own. THIS is the original content. Not the movie.

As I understand it, the album is basically autobiographical, and conceived by Roger Waters--the angrier harsher, yelling vocalist. David Gilmour is the more dreamy, monotonic singer, and the guitarist. The album charts a rock star's journey from birth to insanity, and perhaps redemption. It starts at his birth, and chronicles all the abuses that drive him insane: an overprotective mother, an absent father, abusive teachers, thugs, a cheating wife ("We have a call from a Mr. Floyd" ::click:: "HE hung up! Why does he keep hanging up?"), demanding fans, unscrupulous managers who drug him, etc. Each abuse drives him father into insanity--and builds The Wall that separates him from peaceful, trusting connection.
Floyd was known for their extravagant productions on tour. When they toured behind this album, each song had more huge bricks appearing between the band and the audience, building The Wall, until the climax destroyed it.

The recording of the Wall is prior to the film, it is not the soundtrack of the film. Later, they did the live concerts and with the material they finally made the film.

This is not a soundtrack. The album should absolutely be heard first for its original music and content.

So many people are under the false impression that this album is the soundtrack to the movie which could not be further from the truth. Watching the movie first would be the worst case of chicken before the egg.
Tell you one better, watching Roger Waters live concert of the Wall. Songs sound so much better and the concert production level
I think reading a little bit about Syd Barrett is a good idea even before watching The Wall movie. Then watch the movie. Then every time after, you'll always get more appreciation not just for the lyrics but the music sounds themselves are sound effects of the emotions. Agony, contemplation, youth, age, lifespan meaning...the instruments narrate the feelings as much as they lyrics.
Roger Waters father was killed in WW2.... at the Anzio beach in Italy. The events in a persons life both good and bad can be bricks in our own wall. Things can be both good and bad at the same time depending on which side of the wall you are standing.
When you're done with the album, watch the movie (headphones mandatory) for a full The Wall experience.

The gap in production between Floyd's albums and that of most other artists in their era is a wide chasm.
I know you have heard this a lot even in these comments buuuut, you need to watch the movie The Wall.✌️the wall he referred to is the wall we build around ourselves to keep the world out. All the songs on the album are just another brick we add to that wall. The movie let's you into Roger's mind.✌️

You guys should check out the movie The Wall it will bring the album together though in the movie there are a couple parts in the beginning of the movie that have parts of the song when the tigers broke free (which is a great song also) in it which help clarify some of the early parts.
I liked the album more after I watched the movie.

Yes, so this summer in July in my state recreational marijuana becomes legal and I’m going to have a screening of the movie the wall in my backyard with a bunch of people. I’m so looking forward to it. I’ve been planning it for a year now and it’s going to be epic.

Just curious; out of the majority to what you've reacted to, do you feel you have a certain few artists or groups that you can see yourself coming back to time and time again? I'd be lost without Pink Floyd, greatest band of all time.
There is nothing wrong with watching the movie after listening to the full album the album has a little more in it actually
The first time I heard this album, I wanted to run out and drag people in off the street so they could hear it also. Very powerful album, and I love it, but I won't listen to it if I'm feeling down. The movie is very good, but also depressing.
Listen to the live album 'Is there anybody out there 1980/81' its The Wall Live, and, in my opinion, even better than the original.

This is my favorite album by them. It is genius. It is mostly Roger Waters story. The problem with genius is true genius artists are assholes. He can be insufferable for his art and it fractured the band and led to its demise (Sorta). But you can't deny the sheer artistry of this band and this album. Even with all of Roger's faults, I love his music and I will always love Pink Floyd. David Gilmore is the more likeable member of the Band and his genius is more humble and down to earth.
Once upon a time, in a magical land of cheese, there was an enormous cheese roll named Chester. Chester was unlike any other cheese roll in the land - he was twice as large and ten times as delicious as any other.
One day, Chester was rolling through the hills of cheese when he stumbled upon a man wearing a hi viz jacket. The man introduced himself as Brian May, the famous guitarist of the rock band Queen. Brian was intrigued by Chester and asked him where he came from.
Chester explained that he had no home and no family, and that he had been rolling through the hills for as long as he could remember. Brian was moved by Chester's story, and he offered to take him in and give him a home.
Chester was overjoyed, and he eagerly accepted Brian's offer. Brian took Chester to his home, a cozy apartment filled with guitars and music memorabilia. Chester was amazed by all the guitars and asked Brian to teach him how to play. Brian was happy to oblige, and he spent hours teaching Chester how to strum and play chords.
However, Chester had an unusual obsession with scouring powder called Vim, which often made things difficult. He would refuse to roll on surfaces that had not been cleaned with Vim, which made it difficult for him to move around the apartment. Brian tried to explain to Chester that it was not necessary to use Vim on everything, but Chester would not listen.
One day, Brian came home to find Chester rolling around on a helicopter made entirely from shampoo bottles. Brian was amazed at the ingenuity of Chester's creation, and he suggested that they go for a ride in it.
Chester was hesitant at first, but Brian convinced him to give it a try. They flew high in the sky, looking down on the city below. Chester was amazed by the view and he realized that there was more to life than just rolling around on the ground.
In the end, Chester learned that while it was important to have respect for certain things, it was also important to be open to new experiences. And with Brian's patient guidance, Chester was able to broaden his horizons and learn to appreciate the world in all its diversity.
And even though Chester still insisted on using Vim on everything, Brian learned to live with it. After all, it was a small price to pay for the company of such an amazing cheese roll.

No the wall is largely biographical of Roger waters left. There are many meanings, for me the wall is about those barriers we build much like a mask, what we keep in and what we let the world see

I've read that Waters came in with the album all written and didn't want any input from the rest of the band. They only performed this album live once as Pink Floyd. There is a video of it on UA-cam

Don't get it. The movie is just a long music video which adds context to the album,especially new Floyd listeners.
I feel like the album is “the book” and the movie is just trying to put the book on film and, as usual, it’s not as good as your imagination.
The Wall is my least favourite Pink Floyd album. Which still makes it stand-out head and shoulders above ninety-nine per cent of the rest. The reason why I'm not too keen on "The Wall" is because it's too autobiographical. It's a Roger Waters album with the rest of the band as back-up musicians. Thank any god you prefer David Gilmour and Rick Wright were there to counter Waters and still managed to shoehorn the Pink Floyd sound into the music. Else we would have ended-up with "The Final Cut". Which we eventually did nevertheless. Cheers lads. Always good to see you.
Do yourself a favour, and do not watch the movie before you have developed a personal sense of what this album is about. Then listen to the 1980 live concert. And only then watch the movie.
