  • The Craft in America Center presents a talk by scholar Chiaki Ajioka on Leach’s travels to the US and the international transmission of Mingei.
Chiaki Ajioka is an independent art historian, curator and translator, specializing in modern Japanese crafts and prints in an international context. She has been preparing a book on Mingei outside Japan as an aesthetic dialogue across Japan, Britain and the USA, focusing on Bernard Leach’s first visit to the USA in 1950 and his return visit with Shoji Hamada and Soetsu Yanagi in 1952-53. She has published essays on the topic in English and Japanese.
Upon the centennial of the founding of Leach Pottery, the Craft in America Center presents an exhibition celebrating the cup as object and the impact of Bernard Leach on studio ceramics.
