- Sky News host Gabriella Power has called the removal of the words ‘Merry Christmas’ by a Melbourne council in their holiday campaign “absolutely ridiculous”.
Darebin Mayor Kristine Olaris said the council “celebrates” Christmas but also “embraces and honours the many ways residents come together at this time of year.”
“There’s nothing offensive about the words Merry Christmas and Darebin Council has seemed to forgotten Christmas is a religious holiday,” Ms Power said.
“Christianity is the main religion right here in Australia.”

I am not a very religious person but I believe in Christmas and Easter. I love the songs at Christmas both the religious ones and the other ones. I love to see the joy on the children's faces and it's sad that this year will most probably be the last one my eldest grandson will believe in Santa. I love the peace and friendship between families. Also although I don't really do anything on Australia Day I love the fact that so many get out celebrate the day. I am a proud third generation Australian and actually went and bought an Australian flag . Sick of all the garbage that goes on

Listen, I'm jewish - why shouldn't I wish my Christian friends and relatives a Merry Christmas? Yes, sometimes they (Christians) can't remember the names of all the jewish holidays or when they are celebrated... But I also don't remember all of the Christian holidays! It's fine! Wishing someone a Merry Christmas isn't offensive - it's simply a nice thing to do. Also, most of my Jewish friends are interested in learning about Christmas and want to celebrate it just because it seems fun. There's nothing wrong with wanting to learn about another religion's holidays and wanting to participate. Respecting people's religions and holidays and methods of worship etc. is one thing - trying to convert someone is another. And it's not like you convert the second Christians wish you a Merry Christmas or something... It's just some nice words in a time of goodwill for Christ's sake!

My husband is Jewish and I'm Christian so I say Happy Holidays
In Australia we celebrate Christmas. If someone is offended, then let them be offended. Our Chinese community doesn't short change Chinese New Year. We also celebrate Australia Day, honour ANZAC Day, remember our fallen on Remembrance Day and we have Happy Fathers and Mothers Days. This is Australia! If someone doesn't like it, they could probably find somewhere more appropriate to exist.

I was a Postie for many years and every year in the last week I would say Merry Christmas to every person I saw, whether delivering their mail or passing by. Some of them were from other cultures and religions and not one complained. Most returned the sentiment including muslims.
