Me and a coworker were just talking about how we work at Starbase but we really don’t know what’s going on except what our team is working on, like a bubble or tunnel vision and updates like this is where we learn about what’s happening around us.
It'd be great if one of the YT creators could interview the actual Starbase workers, like you! Perhaps, though, you and your coworkers may not be allowed to give any interviews due to an NDA that y'all had to sign before employment. Just know that many of us would love to hear about your thoughts about your historical work!

im finally trying out the narration and I have to say it's a little better than I had expected....so good job Das.....but I love jumping back and forth with the ambient and narration.....thank you NSF for providing both tracks. 11:05 The "vents" you're looking at are louvers for outdoor air intake ducts. If you look closely at the upper left opening you can see the shiny interior of the duct that is attached to the wall opening. Outdoor air requirements are based on occupancy and building usage type as defined by ASHRAE and other relevant buildings codes in that region. Outdoor air is typically mixed with indoor air in the central HVAC air handling unit (usually roof based) and an equivalent volume of inside air is exhausted from the building. As mentioned above, this ratio entirely depends on occupancy, space type, and a bunch of code. This keeps everyone's lungs happy. Those louvers could also represent air side economizers, which in short is a means to bring outside air in to condition the building when ambient conditions are suitable. As the name might suggest, the goal of an economizer is to reduce the load on the air handling units and use the ambient conditions to help maintain the correct setpoint inside the building. Hope this helps! Sincerely - an HVAC systems engineer. 🙂
I was taught after welding in a new structural elements to always paint it with Red oxide paint, to stop future rust. Since they didn't paint after welding, now the need to go back and sand blast the area, or use a Air Needle scaller (Pneumatic Tool) to remove the rust and paint over the area, manual scaling rust takes along time.
Stunning composition and shots from Mary, a natural. Lots of reflection pool shots, magical. The wildlife shots from Jack were outstanding. The wildlife thrive in the environment, the birds are quite happy feeding by the roadside.
Close ups of the wildlife would be greatly appreciated. Both at Starbase and KFC. Salt Marshes are fantastic places to bird watch. Thanks for the show!
The circle of life is me catching the crabs and then using them as bait to catch fish. I like the all DASplanations. The narrated videos are great. I love to vibe on the starbase sounds M-F 9-5 too
Cable slapping is not a big issue. The real issue : wear patterns at the length of cable in contact w/ the pully(s). There's a lot of back and forth in the cable runs that occur basically in the same zone of cable during normal operations. The cable is periodically shifted (and inspected) to even the wear.
That's exactly why there are 2 cable spools. One is the main draw works that does the in-work winding and the other is the take-up spool works in concert with the main drum to shift the cable through the reaving when not under load.
Great to see these inspiring sunrise sequences again. It’s so good to see the setting of Starbase - SpaceX chose a beautiful place for the site, and these videos really showcase it ❤️
Its tower 1-B, The number is the site, the letter is the sequence of towers. I know that even NASA doesnt always follow that even though they set it up like that but its the only correct way to do it with any logic. I always enjoyed the ambient sound videos but i cant get myself to turn off the commentary. Very well done and i can see how it helps many people with understanding what being shown.
Just visited Starbase (13th) on my way to a conference in San Francisco and was lucky to watch Jack drive by twice with the go pro sticking out of the car 😂
Technically…., Very nice job commenting. Hanging out with you, is rewarding, definitely like your observations and how you add a personal touch about the crew at NSF.
Ok, what I like about the Das commentary streams is that it does not sound scripted, it is like Das is seeing it for the first time with us and just riffing. It is really a new feel for a NSF vid. I don't care if he is right or wrong on his first view speculation on this kind of vid, it is sort of like what goes thru our heads when we see a non commentary daily silent vid. So well done NSF!
That's exactly what you're getting. 👍 I do glance through the timestamp headers before I start, but I intentionally don't watch the clips and just say what I think. There's enough background knowledge to make it useful commentary, but it's definitely not scripted. Thanks for the comment! - Das
Given that the roll up doors on the mega bay are fabric (or otherwise not air tight), I doubt that the vent are for pressure equalization. They are most likely just vents to let out the hot air at the top of the building.
DAS It appears that they are adding ribs to the pipe to increase its resistance to buckling if it has to "catch" the booster if it drops a little to fast at the last few feet. Those little sticks as you call them, look to be 4" to 6" square that's 55 and 122 lb/ft respectively.
11:35 I wonder if those installers knew just what they were letting themselves in for when the boss said, 'just a quick panel install down at Boca Chica, won't take long - they have a lift thingy for you to use...'
the rust can be treated with a solution that changes the rust from iron oxide to iron phosphate, making it both stable and paintable. or they could sand blast it again prior to prime and paint. we will see soon enough.
similar rod/pipe? running up support just to the rt of the one at "13:58" to the left of 2nd lift. at "13:12" you can see several square rods? welded on different support tubes. think is just for reinforcing as they have tapered ends "13:08" at the top not openings for raceways for wire, ect and at "14:05 you can see some have eyelet loops on the rod? between the 2 lifts INTERESTING!!!
Sparks - cutting or grinding? Different kind of spark in each case, and those from a grinder are ejected at speed from the wheel. Sparks from welding basically have no great velocity at the generation point, and mostly just drop in low arcs. It's also clear that longitudinal stringers (not raceways, Das!) are being attached to parts of the chopsticks - these will be welded along their full lengths to the chopsticks to provide yet more stability to them to resist the forces of catching a booster. At the Massey's site, the tall gray structure holding the can crusher is a beautiful example of box-weld construction - the legs and arms are all hollow.
Since Starbase Update is already taken, maybe Starbase Happenings? Starbase Life? Das Does Starbase. No, that one probably wouldn't work. I thought the Starbase Radio was cute.
Those rusty metal things could be to increase strength or help reduce the bounce/flexing seen during catch testing. They could even use those to double wall that section without having to cut the arms apart greatly increasing the strength of that section, a double walled pipe is 4-5x stronger than a single wall 2x thicker

T handle sometimes used to open and close valves in the ground. Usually water valves from the main.
To control corrosion, spray the rusted areas with phosphoric acid, that will eliminate the concern of structural damage.
Hi Das! I love these videos.
3:39 Why am I not surprised that Das plays Fallout? 😂
I believe that red "T" handle is a valve wrench for big waterline valves.
Thanks Das
Given that the roll up doors on the mega bay are fabric (or otherwise not air tight), I doubt that the vent are for pressure equalization. They are most likely just vents to let out the hot air at the top of the building.
The Red T Handle is a water valve key for shutting off & turning on water valves , that are usually below the frost line (underground)..,
