    Can’t we just take a second to appreciate about the fact that we now can buy a BMW M3 (and M4) rwd or awd that is more or less as quick as a Porsche 992 911 S and a 718 Cayman GT4 on a track.
    Yet it is larger, heavier and more comfortable and luxurios than ever…
    That is quite an achievement in my book.

    • @MrLLRT
      @MrLLRT 2 роки тому +12

      IRL the actual weight of the cars are much closer than you think as the Alfa weighs more than specified and the BMW less.
      The RWD BMW weighs about 30kg more than the alfa QV.
      Expected IRL weight difference should be about 80kgs between QV and M3 xDrive as the RWD M3 is ONLY about 30kgs heavier than the alfa IRL

      I actually compared the prices of a 2012 loaded car versus an essentially loaded G80 M3 without all the crazy carbon fiber extras and the new car is a couple thousand dollars cheaper when adjusted for the price of inflation in the US. Not to mention this new car standard has more features than the older ones loaded. It’s honestly not a bad deal for what it is and what it competes against. If you want a better deal with slightly less performance the new Audi RS3 is kinda insane.

    This is great and all…. But I fear we’re going in the wrong direction, giving the cars more power while adding weight not only numbs the experience but also makes it less fun IMO because modern performance cars are honestly too fast for the road…. I’m just waiting for the day when BMW or any manufacturer give us something in the realm 3300-3400lbs with about 350hp RWD, I would personally take that 10 times over this….
    I know that’s just wishful thinking at this point with future performance cars all going electric

    • @bingoberra18
      @bingoberra18 2 роки тому +2

      The M-cars arent for driving enthusiasts anymore, its for whitecollars wanting to have something to brag about without having the comfort compromises of before. Thats why the 1M is so sought after now, it was the end of the great M cars era. Now its just fast and comfortable sedans, might as well go fully electric at this point.

      lap times and acceleration numbers dont really say anything anymore. You can create tons of grip with wide sticky tires on a heavy car with lots of hp, but whats the point? You drive a GT4 for the experience and feedback from the car, sound from NA etc. With the BMW the engine sound comes from the speakers and its just heavy and uninvolving, so whats the point of a faster lap time.

    • @ianmitchell9102
      @ianmitchell9102 2 роки тому

      @@bingoberra18 I get your point but it’s nice to know it can do it, especially if you track the car regularly. The GT4RS should be on a different level to any M3

    • @The_Stanman
      @The_Stanman 2 роки тому +1

      @@bingoberra18 I also value driving experience the most and don't care about accel. I do think lap times mean something tho. They give you the sense of how the car is as a whole package - brakes, handling, driver confidence, etc. You do need to consider tire when comparing times tho.

    Internal combustion engines have gone past its pinnacle. When you have to turbo, auto tranny, pipe sound and awd a what should be a sports car built for driving involvement, it’s gone overboard. Want pure numbers? Go EV. Want driving involvement? Go manual, natural aspiration and rwd.

    It completely escapes me why motoring journalists continue to show testing of a car by making it go sideways. This is never the fastest way round a race track and would be inadvisable and probably illegal on a public road. The only thing it achieves is premature tyre wear and is of little to no relevance to the folks who might buy the car, so why do it? Grow up!
