Really they were just too lazy to make to separate lists. They're two different systems, including them both on the same list makes about as much sense as making a list of the "top 10 GameCube games" but then also including Wii games just because it runs on much of the same hardware.
They combined it because they considered them as one platform, as for example Nintendo has done for many years (e.g. combining sales figures). Where did you get the "small libraries" quote from?

I honestly think this being, entirely, Nintendo published games indicates that you probably should have done this as two top 10 lists: Either Top 10 Game Boy Games and Top 10 Game Boy Colour Games OR Top 10 Game Boy Games: Nintendo Published Division and Top 10 Game Boy Games: NOT Nintendo Published Division. Let the other publishers work get a word in edgewise!
In Pokémon Silver in 2016, I got the vast majority of my Pokémon up to Lv 95. My first Elite Four team was Umbreon, Wigglytuff, Bellossom, Quagsire, Ampharos and Noctowl.
I see the vision for Metroid 2, and it’s definitely a far superior game to Metroid 1, but no map for a metroidvania is a problem that can’t be overcome
Crazy, cuz the remake basically spits in the face of Metroid fans by not only making sequence breaking impossible, but also making areas that seem possible...only to put in a door they can't open right after they make it thru the nearly impassible obstacle they managed to use insane skill, and an hour of attempts, to pass. Plus it doesn't even have Metroid gameplay; they added the parry/counterattack from *Metroid: Other M,* and instead of having it as a fun option like in Other M, forced you to use it by making the beam useless. So the gameplay becomes "jump in front of enemy and wait for it to see and lunge at you so you can Press-A-to-Win". In addition to secret-finding, another key Metroid aspect, being removed by not having secret areas to find; the map shows ALL areas, and you're forced to use the map-creating ability to make progress. Plus the Metroid fights became obnoxious by having them run away to re-hide in a new location. There are times they have FOUR locations to find to kill ONE metroid... Lastly, it lacks the Metroid staple of having music that's the perfect mixture of catchy and atmospheric, tho that's a fault of the original game. Same with the different areas being indistinguishable. No, wait, the problems continue... That's not even half of them. I haven't even yet mentioned the teleportation stations that are so poorly located that it takes more time to teleport than it takes to just walk the normal way, or that it's clearly based on Other M, which everyone hates...even tho that's a far better Metroid game than Samus Returns.
@@daddykarlmarx6183 It's a difficult choice. I feel like Super, Prime, Prime 2: Echoes, Zero Mission, AM2R, and Dread are all viable candidates for Best Metroid Game. They probably all get one major thing wrong, tho; there's no perfect Metroid game. However, AM2R's major flaw is at least not _its_ fault, but rather the fault of Metroid II: The Return of Samus; it's the linear Metroid game. Dread's major flaw, the music, is quite weird since Kenji Yamamoto was the supervisor of the music. But I guess a supervisor can't really make someone become able to create catchy tunes. They really should have just got different composers. It was nowhere near what Tanaka or Yamamoto could compose. Heck, even Metroid II had at least ONE catchy song, and that's "the Metroid game with the bad music".
I didn't realize this list includes gameboy color. If I had I would have said Hamtaro Ham Hams Unite for being one of prettiest on the handheld of it's time, being well designed rather than cash grab for a listened game and having some surprising names attached to it
16:34 shoutout for the yellow legacy project. It’s such a good way to replay gen 1 in the modern day. Throw it in an emulator with x2 speed and I ate it up last year.
Game Boy Color has so many games that it deserves it's own list, and you can separate the few games that are available on both, i. e. Link's Awakening (DX), I don't particularly care how Nintendo lists them together, I care about the strength of the libraries. Separate lists just means more games being talked about and that's a win for everyone.
Man the music in the forest in Links Awakening is probably tied with the best music ever in a video game with the outro sequence music from super Mario Land 1 ... Unreal
I have a lot of appreciation for Final Fantasy Adventure, also called Mystic Quest, also called Seiken Densetsu, the first game in the Mana series. If it had a map in-game like Link's Awakening, I think it would be just as good.
This was my list (though in hindsight I would’ve included Tetris somewhere in the middle). I’m mostly pleased with the results, though I am a bit surprised how much more popular Link’s Awakening was than the Oracle games. 1. Link’s Awakening 2. Oracle of Ages 3. Oracle of Seasons 4. Wario Land 3 5. Pokemon TCG 2 (Japan only) 6. Pokemon TCG 7. Donkey Kong ‘94 8. Pokemon gen 2 9. Super Mario Land 2 10. Super Mario Land
This list was very surprising, I was expecting a lot of hidden gems and third party for the Game Boy... But instead we got Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Kirby, DK 94, Metroid II (???) and of course Tetris
Just gonna dissent here and say that I think of the Zelda Oracle games as one giant game, and playing through both as a linked game is the definitive experience imo.
It IS the definitive experience, but let's say that for some reason you didn't have both, then that would be one Zelda game. If I had to pick between either, I would lean towards Ages, but there is a lot to like about Seasons.
Man, we’re going to need at top 15, 20, or 25 when we get to the SNES 😅 I feel like these consoles are starting to have too many great games you can’t help but shout out
Not surprised. It was a rarity when it came out(as in, it's a miracle the series went on with how poorly it sold) and even with how technically impressive it is there's definite flaws in that first game.
Dragon warrior monsters 2 cobi’s journey is one of those games I played in gbc. Also the harry potter rpg sorccerer’s stone is good, but I guess not a lot of people played it.
8:10 I am one of the few who voted for Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. I know there are better games on the Gameboy, but I really enjoyed the improvements it made over the original game.
I think Seasons is better than Ages to be honest. I think both games are fun, but Ages' puzzle labyrinth overworld makes traveling a chore in it. Seasons flows better. Plus the mermaid suit, while neat, makes water travel annoying as well.
Its so annoying how gen 5 was dragged theoguh the dirt during release and for years after when i knew it was the best game at launch cmapred go fire red and sapphire that i played countless times before. And after gamefreak saw how they tried their hardest and still failed to make sales targets and we have been getting half baked slop for almost 15 years now do people realize how good they had it with gen 5. But no all that mattered back then was "garbage pokemon designs hehe haho" and "where muh gen 1 pokemon"
First off, to not have Mr. Chins Gourmet Paradise in the top ten is criminal Second, to have Ages and Seasons take up 2 slots but combine Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon games in a solid spot is just lame Third, to say the Gameboy and Gameboy color have such small libraries that your lumping them together is just lazy
Maybe you guys should experiment with the format of these videos, you could give Jon like a 4-choice question so he at least has a chance to guess correctly. 😅 Or something along those lines.
I definitely agree Oracle of Ages is the better game. The gimmick isnt as unique but the map design an dungeon puzzles and story. This isnt a knock on seasons which i think might be one of the funniest zeda games and i think works the best as the first act. Although its puzzles can be vague, the dungeons are more easy going and its difficulty curve works for going into Ages next for a climatic finale. The one thing besides a more unique gimmick that Seasons has over Ages is that the mandatory minigames in Ages are legit terrible and some of the worst ive seen in the series. Thank god for emulation or id have torn my hair out without rewinds
I'm convinced most of the people who voted Metroid II have never played it lol Metroid is my favourite series of all time but Metroid II is not a fondly remembered entry.
I actually quite prefer Seasons to Ages. I liked that it was more action based and simpler than Ages. Ages is held back by the Tokay Island quest being too long and having two annoying water dungeons back to back in The Mermaid Cave and Jabu Jabu's Belly.
"best games as voted by the community" is always going to be biased by popularity. I am not surprised to see all nintendo in the top 10 (tetris as an exception makes sense as a launch/bundle title). It is a nintendo system, after all, so it is nintendo is going to have the largest audience. All that said, i was too young to have a large library for the system, and lack most of these experiences. As for seperating the oracle games, as someone who has only had a chance to play ages, i still disagree with the separation simply because of how the games interact with one another to compose a single complete experience. I am not saying one is better or worse than the other, but i have a very similar opinion of OoT and MM. OoT and MM are mirrors of each other, and are greater than the sum of their parts if looked at together. By themselves, both games are great, but viewing them together makes the flaws of one disappear into the strengths of the other. OoT has a better main storyline, but MM has better "side" content. Or to put it another way, OoT becomes underwhelming in comparison to MM if you want to explore the "side" content, but the same is true in reverse. Playing OoT is focusing on the main story, MM is focusing on the "side" content. Feeling in a completionist mood? i go with MM to be better rewarded for my 100%. Want to enjoy the progression of the game and the more diverse dungeons? I play OoT. The games work better as a pair than they do individually as a solo experience, and that same logic translates to the oracle games
Its so frustrating watching community rankings like this, because its always just a list of the most well known and popular games, not the actual best games. How is Metroid 2 at number 10, over games like: Mega Man 5 Mega Man Xtreme 2 Dragon Quest 3 Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Final Fantasy Legend 2 Final Fantasy Adventure Gargoyles Quest Trip World All of the Warioland games Shantae Metal Gear Solid And probably much more... Metroid 2 ISN'T even the best handheld metroidnavia released in the period winter 1991 - spring 1992. Because Wonder Boy 3 also released at that time for the Game Gear. And Wonder Boy 3 is so much better than Metroid 2, its not even funny. I'm not even trying to hate on metroid 2 here, its a fine game, but both it and a couple of others in this top 10 doesn't even belong on a top 20, let alone in the top 10.
Always the most difficult part of these, the vast majority will only play the games that have broad recognition. You could even pull other deep cuts like Kid Dracula, Mole Mania, Catrap, and Azure Dreams for some fantastic games that people always overlook.
inherently a list "ranked by the community" is always going to be a popularity contest, metal gear ghost babel should be an easy top 5 in quality but it's destined to get overshadowed by games that sold more

In Pokémon Silver in 2016, I got the vast majority of my Pokémon up to Lv 95. My first Elite Four team was Umbreon, Wigglytuff, Bellossom, Quagsire, Ampharos and Noctowl.

Metroid 2 is so good! Loved going back to it after the 3DS version. The 3DS remake is one of my favourite Metroid games.
Am2r is better tbh, I think it might be my favorite Metroid game, it's that or dread
Very surprised that Donkey Kong Land I II & III didn’t make the top 20 but I guess it shows the quality of games on the gameboy.
I didn't realize this list includes gameboy color. If I had I would have said Hamtaro Ham Hams Unite for being one of prettiest on the handheld of it's time, being well designed rather than cash grab for a listened game and having some surprising names attached to it
Wario Land 2 is my all time favourite game on the system. Get rid of Super Mario Land 2 that game doesn't hold up. Interesting list.
This video came at a perfect time, i just got an Analogue Pocket.
Great idea for a series.
I loved Silver and personally, to this day, it is the definitive generation with my favorite set of Pokemon.
I do want to play the original Metroid 2 at some point. It's the only 2D Metroid I haven't played.
It's really good.
To further push the analogy:
If Pokemon RBY is Final Fantasy 1 and Pokemon GSC is Final Fantasy 7, then Pokemon BW/B2W2 is Final Fantasy 6.
This was my list (though in hindsight I would’ve included Tetris somewhere in the middle). I’m mostly pleased with the results, though I am a bit surprised how much more popular Link’s Awakening was than the Oracle games.
1. Link’s Awakening
2. Oracle of Ages
3. Oracle of Seasons
4. Wario Land 3
5. Pokemon TCG 2 (Japan only)
6. Pokemon TCG
7. Donkey Kong ‘94
8. Pokemon gen 2
9. Super Mario Land 2
10. Super Mario Land
This list was very surprising, I was expecting a lot of hidden gems and third party for the Game Boy... But instead we got Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Kirby, DK 94, Metroid II (???) and of course Tetris
You guys should make these into Sporcle quizes
Just gonna dissent here and say that I think of the Zelda Oracle games as one giant game, and playing through both as a linked game is the definitive experience imo.
It IS the definitive experience, but let's say that for some reason you didn't have both, then that would be one Zelda game. If I had to pick between either, I would lean towards Ages, but there is a lot to like about Seasons.
Yeah, just like Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night.
Can we add in a way to vote without using Twitter or Bluesky? I don't have an account for either of these...
They’ve been posting voting submissions in the Community Posts on this channel right here on UA-cam too for the next few systems’ videos!
There are calls for votes on UA-cam now as well. In fact there's a post live right now for the Top 10 Genesis games.
My list:
1 - Dragon Warrior III
2 - Dragon Warrior I + II
3 - Zelda Link's Awakening
4 - Pokemon Crystal
5 - Donkey Kong GB 3 Dinky Kong and Dixie Kong
6 - Super Mario Land 2
7 - Ninja Gaiden Shadow
8 - Castlevania II Belmont's Revenge
9 - Bomberman GB 3
10 - Ganbare Goemon Hoshizorashi Dynamites Awaru!!
Man, we’re going to need at top 15, 20, or 25 when we get to the SNES 😅 I feel like these consoles are starting to have too many great games you can’t help but shout out
Kwirk is the most underrated game of all time and a contender for best Gameboy game.
Dissapointed Shantae didn't make to the Top 10
Not surprised. It was a rarity when it came out(as in, it's a miracle the series went on with how poorly it sold) and even with how technically impressive it is there's definite flaws in that first game.
Dragon warrior monsters 2 cobi’s journey is one of those games I played in gbc. Also the harry potter rpg sorccerer’s stone is good, but I guess not a lot of people played it.
Mole mania is an awesome game, I would put it in my top 10
Mole Mania deserves more love.
8:10 I am one of the few who voted for Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. I know there are better games on the Gameboy, but I really enjoyed the improvements it made over the original game.
Please bring back NSO club on the second channel Derrick - really miss it.
I'm wondering how many people that submitted lists actually played these games when they were current and not retro.
If I could give some of my personal top choices that didn't make the list they'd be:
MegaMan Xtreme
DK Land 3
Street Fighter Alpha
There is a color patch for Metroid 2. It's a game changer.
What happened to the megaman series video? Megaman burnout lol?
Star ocean blue sphere!
No love for Final Fantasy Legend II? 😢 That game introduced me to JRPGs as a wee lass.
Really curious where Pokemon Pinball ranked to have all these other games above it.
How many points did Metroid 2 get? Kirby's Dreamland was 573, but Metroid 2's point value wasn't said aloud
My favourite game boy games are Pokemon Red/Blue and Super Mario Land and Shantae
I had never heard anyone pronounce Babel like babble until I started watchng videos about the GBC MGS game.
First off, to not have Mr. Chins Gourmet Paradise in the top ten is criminal
Second, to have Ages and Seasons take up 2 slots but combine Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon games in a solid spot is just lame
Third, to say the Gameboy and Gameboy color have such small libraries that your lumping them together is just lazy
Maybe you guys should experiment with the format of these videos, you could give Jon like a 4-choice question so he at least has a chance to guess correctly. 😅
Or something along those lines.
Game Boy and Game Boy Color should be separate.
Mole mania should be there!
I never played the GB Zelda games much and I just don't enjoy Tetris but I can't disagree with anything else on this list.
I'm convinced most of the people who voted Metroid II have never played it lol
Metroid is my favourite series of all time but Metroid II is not a fondly remembered entry.
Can't say I'm disappointed in community in only voting for Nintendo games. Especially since the third party games were just as good if not better.
if cat trap isnt number 1 imma lose my s
Oracle of Ages #1
Pokemon Gen 2 #2
Pokemon Gen 1 #3
Oracle of Seasons #4
Link's Awakening #5
Don't think I really care about the rest
Didn't even praise OoA in its own section, weak
I haven't finished watching the video but I'm proactively already upset at the weird itchy and scratchy golf platformer game that is not on this.
For Frog the Bell Tolls and TCG 2 the Invasion of Team GR got robbed 😭😭😭
The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle [1990] was a ton of fun too! i like the sequels for it, but the first game has a special place in my heart
Not a single Dragon Quest game. For shame!
I would have had Dragon Quest III in there for sure. It's a great handheld remake for the game years before 2D-HD sprung up
Metroid II is such a masterpiece and I’m tired of this slander! /hj
If Tetris is not on this list we riot!
For RRRRUUUusSSSsIIIIaaaaa
Tetris is mid af
@@beardedgamerdrew5813 you are mid
Its so frustrating watching community rankings like this, because its always just a list of the most well known and popular games, not the actual best games.
How is Metroid 2 at number 10, over games like:
Mega Man 5
Mega Man Xtreme 2
Dragon Quest 3
Dragon Quest Monsters 2
Final Fantasy Legend 2
Final Fantasy Adventure
Gargoyles Quest
Trip World
All of the Warioland games
Shantae
Metal Gear Solid
And probably much more...
What's even more bizarre is none of them put any of the Wario Land games are on the list. It's one of the systems most recognizable game
@@jaretco6423I am not looking forward to the Master System list...
I do not trust any American's opinion on the Master System library...
Always the most difficult part of these, the vast majority will only play the games that have broad recognition. You could even pull other deep cuts like Kid Dracula, Mole Mania, Catrap, and Azure Dreams for some fantastic games that people always overlook.
inherently a list "ranked by the community" is always going to be a popularity contest, metal gear ghost babel should be an easy top 5 in quality but it's destined to get overshadowed by games that sold more
complains about combining the oracles together and then combines Gameboy with gameboy color games on a list...yeah, rookie mistake.
Three Zelda games but _no_ Wario Land games? Yeah, list just ain't it.
No Warioland and no Pokemon Pinball. The fans have failed immensely. What a boring typical list
I just got a Chromatic so this is perfect timing. 🎉
