I find you to be both a Star Trek gate keeper and an elitist. I'm 59 and have appreciated Star Trek two years longer than you. How about limiting your rants to simply expressing your opinions and letting people appreciate the property in their own way and for their own reasons?

    • @roystonsbailey
      @roystonsbailey 5 днів тому +6

Those rants are at least 50% of the appeal of this channel. And there's nothing wrong with being an elitist. Someone needs to care about quality standards.

    • @NoMoneyG
      @NoMoneyG 4 дні тому +2

I come here for the rants. Rob only shares his personal opinion & it's his channel. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Rob has always said people can like what they want to like. We all have our own favorites & opinions on what we like. He just calls out the inconsistencies & lack of Trek knowledge in mostly NuTrek.
All of Trek is not perfect either, but at least they tried to tie things together from 1966-2005. Everything after that is nonsensical action slop & ignoring canon to fit modern audiences tastes, leaving us old fans out of the picture.

I absolutely am an elitist. I expect the best. I abhor mediocrity. But a gatekeeper? Nah. I just express my own opinions here. I don’t tell anyone else what they should do. As for liking TREK longer than I have? Well, I didn’t exist yet. However, I was a paid Trek consultant for Viacom Licensing in the 90s. I was part of the team which created the STAR TREK EXPERIENCE at the Vegas Hilton. I wrote and directed a feature film starring William Shatner about TREK fans. I spent three years working for CBS producing all the documentaries for both the TNG and ENT Blu-rays…including hosting a round robin 25th Anniversary conversation with the entire TNG cast. So…I think I’ve more than earned my elitist status. You can watch the conversation. ua-cam.com/video/BU_MTL3OocY/v-deo.html But you are coming on to my UA-cam page and telling me how I should comport myself. Aren’t you doing exactly what you’re accusing me of doing?

    • @gordoncutter9241
      @gordoncutter9241 2 дні тому +1

How is he a gatekeeper? He's not in a position to be one - he's not linked to Stark Trek professionally. He's just a guy with a YT channel expressing his opinions.
And if anything, we need more elitists in the audience and critic spheres. Maybe if we had them, the quality of the work wouldn't resemble what it does now: mostly shit.

    • @THEBURNETTWORK
      @THEBURNETTWORK  2 дні тому +3

Ultimately, I don't see any problem at all with being a gatekeeper (which I am not) and and STAR TREK elitist (which I am).

Same here. I can hear Rob talking about Star Trek for hours, days...I like his passion for Trek. The ideals of Roddenberry are missing in its modern incarnation and that`s why Star Trek ended for me in 2005 (with exception of Picard S3 last year)....

As a man in my fifties, Star Trek: The Motion Picture makes me appreciate it more and more as I grow older. Three men who have accomplished so much yet find themselves miserable when an anomaly heads to Earth bringing Kirk, McCoy, & Spock together.

I saw TMP with my Dad in the theater when I was 8. On the way back from the theater, we were riding in his VW Beetle when he downshifted and yelled "warp speed!!!" and hit the gas and went so fast down the road..it was such a great memory of me and my Dad.

Star Trek The Motion Picture is my favorite Star Trek movie. To me it is the essence of what Star Trek is and what it should be! Paramount has lost the original vision of Gene Roddenberry.
I would love to see a new Star Trek show or movie that would bring this vision back.
    Loved this episode of Robservations!

I was 8 when I saw it in the theater. In the balcony no less. We missed the opening Klingon scene. Mom took me to the local mall afterwards and I picked up a TOS model kit of the the Enterprise and Romulan and Klingon ships and put them together as I watched SNL that night.
I’ve since been lucky enough to catch 2 revivals in the past 2-3 years. This film is a masterpiece. The music and first appearance of the Enterprise still make me tear up ( nostalgia for childhood and great filmmaking).
As an older man who’s had triumphs and failures, this movie resonates more and more.
I think the cult for this movie is growing organically. It seems to get bigger and bigger every year.
Rob- please do a massive episode on the the Otoy short. I had NO IDEA this was coming. I knew NOTHING going in. I was very lucky. What a beautiful experience and an emotional gut punch. The beauty of film.
Keep up the great work Rob.

We share a similar timeline with this amazing film. I was eight as well. Thanks to syndication and Mego I was all in on Star Trek. My day felt he missed the boat by not taking me to Star Wars two years prior so he took me to see TMP. I loved it then, and love it even more today. It still LOOKS amazing and all the effects IMO hold up and are often better in some aspects (The Worm Hole) than modern movies today. Happy 45th TMP!

I love TMP. Saw it in the theater at age 17. Slow? I prefer deliberate. It’s a good story/character study that re-enforces to me what Star Trek is all about. To boldly go and explore. The journey, and learning and growing through the journey. To seek out the unknown with an open hand rather than a closed fist. An idea that, at 62, I still try to live my life by.

My mother was a massive Star Trek fan and we waited in line to see the movie when it hit theaters, and stayed to see it twice. I was 11. My wife's father was a big Trek fan and took her to see it at 10. We both love the film and quote it often, "Will you please... sit down." I never tire of watching it. It is THE best Trek film! To be clear, I love the original theatrical version (unfinished or not). No directors cuts for me.

I have been a Star Trek fan my entire life... My parents had said that I always watched the show since I was a toddler, and I have fuzzy memories of watching the syndicated reruns on TV as far back as the VERY EARLY 70's... Additionally, our local TV stations ALWAYS had Star Trek Marathons, some of which went on for HOURS... and I watched EVERY minute of them! I also watched the mid-1970's animated TV series as well... I collected the Mego action figures and built the AMT model kits... My brother and I even had the Star Trek Communicators, which were basically just cheap hand-held walkie-talkies!... So, yeah, I was a HUGE Trekkie LONG before ST:TMP came along in 1979...
I have ALWAYS loved Star Trek: TMP, ever since I first saw it in the movie theatre in December of 1979 when I was 13 years old... It is one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made (Hell, one of the greatest films ever made of ANY KIND), and definitely the only TRULY CLASSIC and EPIC Star Trek film that has ever been made... I mean, while I love ALL SIX Original Cast Star Trek films... This first one is truly SPECIAL... And as the countless years continue to pass, I find myself loving it MORE and MORE...
ST:TMP did for sci-fi films in 1979 what 2001: A Space Odyssey did for sci-fi films in 1968... Simply put, it presented science fiction as intelligent, thought-provoking, cerebral, character-driven storytelling at its very best (The very "heart" of what the TV series was). ST: TMP was an extraordinary cinematic endeavor, and it was nothing short of a movie-going EXPERIENCE in 1979... It absolutely blew me away.
From the beautiful Overture of Ilia's theme... To the Cloud's awesome attack on the Klingon cruisers... to Admiral Kirk's emotional flyby of the Enterprise in drydock... to the arrival of Spock, and the long-awaited reunion of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy... to the Enterprise's voyage into the Cloud's interior, and Spock's trippy space-walk ... to the discovery of V'ger's true identity... to the "cosmic merging" of Decker and Ilia into a new life form... to the epic End Title music... "Wow", I'm getting emotional just typing this!
From the visionary brilliance of the great Gene Roddenberry, to the always reliable performances of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, to the impeccable direction of Robert Wise, to the jaw-dropping special effects of Douglas Trumbull and John Dykstra, to the majestic score of Jerry Goldsmith... It succeeds on every level... Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a CLASSIC... It is a MASTERPIECE.
    PLUS...
And THIS comment MOST CERTAINLY deserves its OWN paragraph (so here it is)...
Star Trek: TMP features, in all of her beautiful baldness...
    The exquisite Persis Khambatta...
    "Nuff said!"
When I look back on it, what a great time is was to be a kid going to the movies in the mid - late 1970's... Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Jaws, Logan's Run, King Kong, Star Wars, The Spy Who Loved Me, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, Moonraker, Alien, The Black Hole... and, of course... Star Trek: The Motion Picture... "Wow!"... CLASSICS all... Simply INCREDIBLE!
I once again got to see ST: TMP in the theatre when the 2022 Director's Edition was released recently for a limited theatrical run... The movie looked ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, VIBRANT, and COLORFUL... simply breath-taking... The new sound effects mix was INCREDIBLE, and the Goldsmith score was a totally immersive experience in the theatre auditorium... The Grandeur, the Scope, and the Beauty of this film... Absolute BLISS! What a thrill it was to see it once again in all of its big-screen glory after 43 years... It was 1979 all over again, and I was that awestruck 13 year old kid again... It felt great!
December 7th, 1979... Happy 45th Birthday, Star Trek: TMP... Let's all raise a glass of Romulan ale to it... Live long and prosper... The Human Adventure is just beginning!

Like you, I think “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” was the most like the classic TV show. I kept the spirit of discovery that has been lost to modern Star Drek. I’ve always ranked it above all other Star Trek movies with the exception of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”. I appreciated the fly-over of the Enterprise because I could empathize with Kirk viewing his one true love reborn. Then again, like you, I had watched The Animated Series when it first aired and it’s a part of my head canon (while none of the modern renditions after “Star Trek Generations” are). Modern Star Drek doesn’t understand Kirk, doesn’t understand Vulcans, doesn’t understand command or protocol in command relationships, doesn’t understand the universe Roddenberry created.
I used to watch the original series with my father on a 5-inch Sony B&W portable TV (yes, portable in 1969!).
I loved the fact they did a Director’s Edition of ST:TMP.

Hey Mr. Burnett! Just wanted to let you know that "The Immunity Syndrome" was also a favorite of mine from my originally-developing love of TOS while watching the show in the 1970s, and one of the big reasons it still remains as such is that it inspired my love of biological sciences as a very young person at the time. And I went on to acquire advanced degrees in microbiology and immunology because of it and now hold a biological sciences-related position of prominence at a highly-acclaimed University. And all because of my original love of "The Immunity Syndrome" :) . As you say, modern Trek utterly fails to inspire in any of these ways which was such an important aspect of the core of what is supposed to be Star Trek.

According to TJ Burnside Clapp, the lady who is known for that early X-Wing Pilot cosplay, the Star Trek conventions she went to in the seventies had plenty of women. She said the reason a lot of women were there is because they wrote the fan fiction, and published the fanzines.

While my enjoyment of TMP has definitely solidified over the years with the 4K Director's edition completely cementing my love of the movie (I can watch it just to take in the best-ever soundtrack!), my experience with my son was different in that he and I were watching TOS together when he was around 10ish or so. And he was mostly enjoying it, but did complain that it was somewhat slow at times for him, and of course he didn't appreciate any of the love scenes :) . But he continued to watch at that point as we went through the 3 seasons on my Blu-Ray remastered discs. But then I took him to the 40th anniversary theatrical showing of TMP (which unfortunately was not the Director recut but the original version), and he came out of the movie no longer wanting to watch must ST anymore :( . He again bemoaned that it was just too slow and that he preferred more action-oriented fare (e.g., Star Wars, etc.). I continue to hope that he will come back to ST someday (he's 15 now), but we shall see...

You never talk about "Next Generation". I was in junior high when next gen was being made and i loved it. Older Star Trek kinda lo-fi'd me out, however I found next gen to be very believable. Maybe speaks to the idea that we get spoiled by effects.
The important part is mainly the themes, but if you're used to having it portrayed in a certain fidelity, it becomes laborious.

Is that Piller book that Rob brings up here different from the one that's currently on Amazon - Fade In: The Making of Star Trek Insurrection?
I personally don't care about Star Trek but I'm fascinated by these types of behind the scenes stories, especially the various non-creative decisions that factor into the writing process.

The movie, for me, didnt start feeling like "Star Trek" until Spock came on the ship and they could get down to business. Yes, loved the Starship porn, loved Vulcan and disco McCoy (wish he kept the beard), liked Decker and Ilia, but wished they had made it clear what made Deltans special and he was Matt's son and the inherent weight of that. Loved the intro with the Klingons, seeing Earth in the 23rd century. However, the transporter and wormhole segments were totally not needed and were a waste of valuable screen time. Its supposed to be the cost of Kirk's hubris but he doesn't feel any of it and it all goes nowhere. I'd love to see an edit where the transporter and wormhole bits are taken out and see how plays in the runtime.

I’m 61 now and had the first issue of Starlog. The Ralph McQuarrie designed enterprise was pictured in it. I. Was. Horrified. I didn’t want the next iteration of the enterprise to be that wildly different. I wanted more Kirk Spock and the enterprise in new adventures but not in an unrecognizable form. The STTMP ship was sufficiently close that it scratched that itch but…I thought the interiors and uniforms were too far off the beaten path. They should have stuck with the original form but just slightly updated. Anyway, I loved the original film and totally understood what they were doing particularly in light of science fiction at that time. They didn’t want to be compared to Star Wars and remain true to the original mission statement of trek. I think they succeeded admirably with STTMP and even more so than the succeeding films. Wrath of Kahn is an adventure film but could really be put in any franchise.
I’ve always wanted to go back cinematically and revisit the original world of TOS but do it on the big screen. Maybe someday.

The Motion Picture is a movie I love more each year, the 4k directors cut is a must own disc. The TOS movies are probably what I love most in the franchise, coupled with TNG which I grew up with. Of the TOS films, 2-6 are, for the most part, action adventure yarns, only the first is actually hardcore science fiction. It makes me appreciate the majesty of space and the vastness of the universe in a way which the others don’t really attempt, save the heavily flawed Trek 5, laced with wonky effects and odd humor that ruined the tone.
Perhaps it rubs a little wrong for many as the characters are a bit stilted and lacking that connection, the sense of family that is cooking from the get go in the other films and a strength of the tv show. But I Kind of felt that was the point. The coldness of space and V’ger brings out Spock’s human side and the characters find their way back to each other by movies end.
I’d say it’s not my favourite as Wrath of Khan is so propulsive and a tightly wrapped narrative with one of the most heartbreaking climaxes to a movie I’ve seen. But The Motion Picture is probably Star Treks peak as a cinematic spectacle. I’ve never had the opportunity to see it in the cinema. Fingers crossed one day a cinema chain in Japan will have showings of the TOS movies. Motion Picture would be the one I’d be most excited to see.
Thanks for your passion Rob. You convinced me to watch Picard season 3 when I felt too burned by what had gone on since Discovery. Picard season 3, though not premium trek for me, was a pretty solid send off to my tv Dad Picard and the next gen crew. Seems also perhaps the farewell to star trek as I knew it (ok the recent unification short might also be a nice RIP to Trek) Not interested in anything coming down the line. Only Matalas being allowed to make Legacy could reel me back in now.

Yeah, this one gets better every year. The Enterprise never looked better, or had so many people; the science fiction themes are strong; the theme of cooperation rather than fighting is pure trek, and dare I say, the love story between Decker and Ilia becomes more poignant. Really this is the only epic Trek film, and I love most of the others.

... Star Trek, featuring Sisko and Data ...
... and Start Trek: Defiant ... WHAT ? Worf and Spock on the same bridge ?? Can you imagine ??
It's full of surprise, and references, and reverence ... and high concept.
    Lore War, coming soon.
You gotta seek this shit out !!

Rob, its ironic you that say the fan base today is all about "Me, Me, Me" but the Motion Picture and the syndicated fan base occured in the 70s, " The Me Decade". It was so called because younger people at the time were considered to be self absorbed and all about themselves. Hmmm...that sounds vaguely familiar.

Rob, I get your point about Uhura's role in TOS and it was by design. However the movies SHOULD HAVE EVOLVED the side characters. Yes love Kirk, Spock, and McCoy but the fact that core stayed in the films was a disservice. Look at the Motion Picture. Mysterious Communications come from V'Yger. You think the Communications Officer could have a role in deciphering it. No, its all Spock. I thought that in 1980 when I first saw it. I hate SNW with a passion. But not sorry I hate the fact they never expanded the roles of the side characters by the 80s. Yeah they gave Checkov stuff to do and Sulu got a captaincy but it was not enough.

I agree with Rob on almost everything Star Trek. I also think that since 2009, Star Trek is no longer Star Trek. The only thing that I enjoyed were a few minutes of Picard, season 3. I think season 3 of Picard is overrated, only because it's better than the previous two seasons, and Discovery. Upon further reflection after it aired, Picard S3 is disappointing. I got a soap opera feel from it. But seeing the Enterprise D again, was a major highlight. (A lost son, bringing back old and interesting characters only to kill them off, the Borg again...)

I just noticed something about nu trek supporters comments on youtube.
A complete and utter absence of reasons as to why it is good.
Instead, they rely on emotional attacks and name calling.
    Interesting.

As I have now entered middle age, I do have a newfound appreciation for TMP - it's a bit of a slow burner but I don't mind it. It feels more like a sensory/contemplative experience - it feels quite immersive if you let it wash over you. Rob, I totally understand your strong feelings regarding how Modern Trek is presented... Spock in SNW is now a comedy punchbag who is socially awkward with autistic traits? [and even the showrunners understanding of autism is woefully incompetent].
A lot of the attempts in Modern Trek to elicit an emotional response feels contrived, even the way that emotions are expressed on the show... they don't feel genuine to me. All this focus on the self and one's own anxieties all the time. I remember being an adolescent teen watching TNG and what I saw were professionals working together & respecting authority. The officers conducted themselves with dignity, they had to keep their shit together because they had a job to do! That's what I loved about TNG - I had my anxieties about myself etc but TNG made me put those issues about myself aside for 45 mins [no ads on BBC 2] and took my mind elsewhere. I think it helped me take the pressure off dwelling on my own problems and think about situations that were greater than myself.
Keep on shouting at clouds Rob, I'm right there with you!

I get so tired of personalities...won't mention any names but let's say his name rhymes with Don Lampea...keep talking about how ST:TMP is so bad and really it's ST:TWOK that's the masterpiece. I like TWOK, but it's a space battle flick. TMP is a lot more cerebral and sophisticated, and it has way more to say. REAL Trek fans get it.

I tried to watch it again earlier this year, and still found it almost unwatchable. Sorry, it just doesn't do it for me.
One thing that has always bothered me is that Kirk could not take command of the Enterprise. As a flag officer, he would command the mission and the Enterprise would be his flagship, but Decker would still be in command of the ship itself.

It's not just TOS that had characters who had their sh*t together enough to do their jobs despite traumas; The entire TNG era (TNG, DS9, and Voy...to some degree) had characters who suffered many losses and unimaginable traumas... and yet they were STILL professionals when it came to their jobs. They delt with their issues at the APPROPRIATE times with either a ships counsellor or off duty with their closest confidants. I never had to see Unprofessional Maladjusted Crybabies talking about feelings in the hallways... or corridors in this case, in the classic Star Trek.
The other thing I despise with Modern Trek is the unprofessional decorum and blatant insubordination of Abrams/Kurtzman Starfleet Officers.

It still stinks like a dung pile.😊 Nothing wrong with food for thought but entertaining people is part of what is needed for films to be successful.
