One thing that caught my attention and that I couldn’t get out of my head ever since was the occasional writing on the wall: “Basarabia e Romania”, along with the Romanian tricolour. My opinion is that Moldova's only chance for a better life is to unite with Romania. But I also think that it is economically disadvantageous for Romania, because living standards, salaries, even pensions have to be equalized, and this will cost a lot of money. Also, I think that the government in Moldova does not want this unification, because now they rule and have power, and in unification they will become ordinary regional politicians with minimal power. And let's not forget the problem of Transnistria, a very small territory, but it can create very big problems.
Rebuilding Moldova from ground up is nothing compared to rebuilding Romania starting in the 90s and still work in progress! Romania has a long way to go to finish its reconstruction. But most of all the reconstruction of its shaky 'democratic' values . . long way to go. ..
It would only cost and be a disadvantage for a small period of time. Romania was a 3rd world country in the 90s, it developed on turbo-mode. The part of Romania that was ripped against the population's will - is small and would not be as difficult to develop. They have also their own rather fine people, we don't need to care for them or condescend them, just help them a bit. And there would be EU funds for it.
I do not think the Transnistria problem is as big as it once was. A lot of it was dependent upon the reputation of the Russian army. So far, events on the ground and Ukraine indicate that the Russian army does not deserve that reputation and they should be fairly easy to kick out of the country. Diplomatic channels should be more than sufficient for that task. Transnistria would just have to conform to the rest of the country and be integrated into the new unified polity. Anybody who doesn’t like it can leave and I do not think the Russian army will want to intervene since they would now face a NATO country.
I'm French and I understand half of it ... especially when the ex minister speaks (he speaks slowly with great articulation) I went to Romania two times I did understand some words but it did not seem as easy. You understood the ex minister better because he speaks slowly in a standard Romanian with less moldovan accent compared to the other people interviewed. In Romania we also have regions with different accents, you probably have visited Transylvania or Moldova region of Romania where they also have strong accents.
Romanian is an eastern branch of latin. The highest transferability is with the other eastern latin languages istriot, macedon romance, aromanian However romanian is the most westernized and modern eastern latin language.. so its easy to understand But if you dont understand some words it doesnt mean its not latin.. for certain things our words derrived from another latin root It happens in all other latin languages aswell
Ridiculous how Russians made a breakaway country of Moldova to have control over the region. Then USSR collapsed and they lost control over the breakaway country, so they made a breakaway country within the breakaway country (Transnistria).

besides economically i don't see much of a benefit to join the eu taking into account the recent "divorce" of the eu and russia. Odds are that the eu will come down crashing down when they start paying market prices for energy and so on

I have never mentioned Romania and to be honest I donm't yet know that much about Romania. I am trying to learn as much about Moldova and Armenia as I can and now I see that I must also learn about Romania unless someone can fill me in. I am being totally honest I don't know much about Romania but I do have very faint memories of the old Romania and they are not very pleasant and that is why I ask to be brought up to now about Romania. I fear for all of Easter Europe - Putin has apparently expressed a desire to bring back the old USSR and that would in all probability include Romania as well as Armenia and Moldova. The United States, Britain, Canada can not protect the eastern world but we do not want to see the destruction of free and independent nation states either. @@rhh3582 Our history basically started when the Roman Empire conquered Dacia (succesors of Thracia) and the Romanian people were born. Fast-forward a bit and there were 3 Romanian principalities: Transylvania in the West (mostly under Hungarian control, but still with a majority Romanian population), Wallachia in the South and Moldova in the East. The two latter principalities would often fall under Ottoman occupation. Important note: the principality of Moldova's territory was made of the current Eastern Romania and the current territory of Moldova. Fast forward to 1859, when Moldova and Wallachia united and in 1881 became the Kingdom of Romania. Fast forward to 1918, and Transylvania was united with Romania as well. During the 19th and 20th century, the current territory of Moldova (known as Basarabia) would be stolen by Russia and claimed back by Romania several times, until after WWII, when the Soviet Union forcefully took it. During the Soviet era, the Russians would do their best to convince Romanians in Moldova that they are a different nation to us. Tldr: Romanians and Moldovans are the same people, speaking the same language, but there is a border because Russia.

Il Principato di Moldavia si è unito nel 1859 con il Principato di Valacchia sotto il leader unionista moldavo Alexandru Ioan Cuza formando l'Unione dei Principati rumeni che poi ha ottenuto l'indipendenza dall'impero Ottomano diventando l'attuale Romania. Quindi attualmente è la Romania l'erede del vecchio principato di Moldavia. A big like ! It is encouraging that most Moldovans who support reunification with Romania are young. They are a hope for Moldova and Romania. Currently, one out of four Moldovans has Romanian citizenship, so he is Romanian. I hope that this percentage will increase in the short term. Many Moldovans study and work in Romania and in the West. The future of Moldova is in the European Union, together with Romania.
How to solve the Transnistria issue? I don't think anyone wants to forcibly eject the Russians, it's quite clear that they are just unwitting pawns in some sadistic game of Russian imperialism, but say reunification happens, how does the EU deal with the awkward fact that it now has Russian military bases in it?

Transnistria was created on the territory of Moldova in order for Russia to control the future of Moldova. The separatist authorities in Transnistria are not recognized internationally, but they respond to Moscow's orders. It is clear that currently Moscow does not accept Moldova's exit from Russian influence by joining the European Union. Moldova can take advantage of a window of opportunity at the end of the conflict in Ukraine, when the future of the region will most likely be discussed.

They should definitely unite with Romania. Russia is distracted with Ukraine, its now or never. With Romania they will will be protected by NATO. and their economy will finally emerge from stagnation.
However, Romania may be hesitant to absorb the Russian shit still present in Moldova, the so-called "Russkij mir", which destroys all civilizations and drags down entire societies. Even the Chinese, despite the autocracy, do not push too hard for close relations with this cave-like mixture of slavery, rudeness and lack of order at every level of society, lack of personal initiative and humble attitude against any authority that slaps you in the face and hurts you in elaborate ways. There are people, especially part of Russian-speaking people, in Moldova, who have a deeply encoded post-Russian Stockholm syndrome and Romania may simply not want this mess.

Romania împărțită la vremea aceea în mai multe regiuni și principate. Principatele s-au desființat, s-a înființat în locul lor însă o țară, un regat, unde se vorbește aceeași limbă, dar în regiunile cu micile lor graiuri locale, graiurile au rămas, cum e și normal să fie și cum există în fiecare țară de pe planeta asta. Când ne ducem acolo, in regiunile alea, prezentăm pașaport? Au acele regiuni un guvern separat? Hai să nu fim caraghioși! Te rog nu uita, Moldova nu a fost niciodată “regat” și nici “imperiu” 😃 a fost o țărișoară minusculă din Europa de Est, un p.r.i.n.c.i.p.a.t., influențată de toți vecinii, care nu și-a pus ea amprenta pe țările vecine, ci mai curând invers. Dovadă graiul cel mai rusificat de pe orice teritoriu locuit vreodată de români; nici românii din zona Salonicului nu au asemenea accent grecesc cum au moldovenii accent rusesc. Nici lipovenii din Delta Dunării nu vorbesc românește cu asemenea accent rusesc cum vorbesc moldovenii din Republica Moldova! Culmea! Să nu mai vorbim de faptul că moldovenii de dincolo de Prut se fălesc atât de tare cu accentul ăla rusesc, de gândești că ar fi vreo podoabă a limbii române… Bucovinenii au mult mai puțin accent rusesc, ei cum pot să vorbească o limbă română mai curată oare? Ba mai rău, in trecutul nostru separatist, moldovenii i-au atacat armat pe frații lor din principatele române vecine de câte ori au avut ocazia, luându-le femeile și copiii ca ostatici sau chiar ca sclavi pe care i-au vândut pe teritoriile rusești sau chiar tătarilor ori turcilor… Atacații nu s-au lăsat mai prejos și au atacat și ei, deci practic moldovenii și cu ceilalți români s-au bătut ca chiorii cu aceeași determinare cu care s-au bătut cu tătarii sau cu turcii! Mai mare rușinea!! 🫣😡 Sfințenia lui Ștefan cel Mare a constat mai ales în faptul că s-a încurcat cu vreo 20 de femei și a făcut vreo 17-20 de copii din flori de mare creștin ce era….și “sfânt”… Hai să nu mai înflorim istoria și s-o privim cu ochiul critic al omului modern, civilizat, care știe să diferențieze între bine și rău. Ardelenii sunt mai dezvoltați eventual decât restul României pentru că au știut să ia ce era mai bun de la Vestul care i-a invadat. De ce n-au luat și moldovenii ce era mai bun de la ruși? Nu era ce?🙃😉😃 În loc să ia votcă și propagandă, naționalism inutil și grandomanie? Nu suntem de fapt la o olimpiadă de cine-i mai breaz ca celălalt, că doar suntem cetățenii aceleași nații! Dar fiindcă aduseși vorba… Iorga este foarte criticabil pentru că opera lui pe jumătate a fost o bășică de săpun inflamată de exces de naționalism măsluit pe ici si colo și opera ulterior i-a fost pusă jos de către specialiști egali sau mult mai importanți decât el, pe drept cuvânt. Ăsta-i baiul la țările mici și sărace intotdeauna, se umflă în pene până când le plesnește pielea… Și pe unde a plesnit sângerează numai naționalism. Jale mare. N-avem nevoie de stat în stat, avem nevoie de o țară mare, puternică economic, unită, cu mai multă populație, cu mult teren agricol, cu multe resurse naturale de care să ne bucurăm toți împreună, fiindcă știm că e posibil și fiindcă știm că puterea stă în unire și în număr. As a native Romanian, I had no issue understanding every single word of the people talking in what was called until a few days ago another language, namely, "moldovian."
The Moldavian or Romanian languages are exactly the same, with the exception of the words forcefully introduced in the process of russification (especially technical terms and forcefully changing romanian names into some that resemble russian family names, which is disgusting but, of course, typically to the russian occupier -- along with deportations, chasings, and killings of those who resist). You cannot hurt the feelings of a Romanian if you call our language Romaninan, Moldovian, or Vallahian. It is the same language, which was called differently as the culture evolved and cultural unification was accelerated as manuscripts began to circulate widely across our territory. Not even Stefan the Great carried what his language was called. In the actual documents, the language was recognised as Valahian, while he strongly considered himself Moldovian, which is of course acknowledged by any Romanian. Yet, looking at texts from 500 years ago written in whatever language you like to call it, as a Romanian, I can read that with no significant effort. So what's the difference if it's called Moldovian/Romanian? The most important thing is that it is called THE SAME. So, Glory to BIG ROMANIA!

Moldova has only to gain by re-uniting. Im pretty sure there is a potential in Moldova, potential in industry and trade between Balkan EU and non EU east of Europe. Romania is big brother, who can protect you from some russian separative tendencies and from relatively unstable/problematic region. Your economy would also skyrocket, Romania around 2005 was still one of a few poorest European nation, now it reached decent average almost with Portugal and Greece. I know you developed some national pride especially the older people, but I'm pretty sure if you re-united, you could negotiate some freedom, like German, Austrian states have or Scotland in the UK with some of its rights. Im pretty sure you would attract massive investments from all over Europe, like we Czechs attracted in 90s when we were a cheap, but pretty future high potential market, when we build so many factories, companies and services thanks to Germans or Dutch and we export our own owned hi tech things to all over the world.

Around 80% of the Moldovan citizens are Romanian, the rest are Ukrainian, Russian, Gagauzian, so it would be logical that at least 80% of the population would support the reunification, but this, sadly, is not the case. At the moment around 40-45 % support the reunification, at best, although this number is growing every year. As a Romanian from Moldova, I'm ashamed of this statistics. Nevertheless, people should know what the reason behind this is. And the reason is the heavy Soviet and then Russian propaganda on our people, for the last 80 years. Actually, sometimes I think it's a miracle that we still remember who we are, so I guess it depends how you look at it. Still, I am convinced that the reunification will happen sooner or later, it is only natural. P.S. That is because your statistics are wrong, at least for Chișinău and the other big towns in Basarabia, which are heavily populated by Russians, following the heavy deportation of Romanians to remote Russian regions during Stalinism. The Russian government/military is doing the same AS WE WRITE, NOW IN 2023, 21'ST CENTURY AD, to Ukrainians from Donbas and Zaporojia. Think about what the orcs did in the past centuries while we were busy cu micii la grătar!
In fact, the Russians protected this area from nomadic raiders and settled Moldovans there. Moldavia has many Slavs, and considering Romania's history of ethical cleansing of Slavs from the Black Sea coast and colonization with Romanians, not only there, minorities will find it difficult to submit to such a country.
Let's also not forget about the fact that besarabian bulgarians inhabit parts in the moldovian part of besarabia (They mostly inhabit the Ukrainian but still). They are an official minority in Moldova and are mostly forgotten.

The population is not pro-Russian but starting with Vladimir Voronin, after he had a visit to Moscow, lots of Kremlin money has been flowing through the political system and the politicians specifically have been very pro-Russia - this is also one of the reasons they lost so badly to Maia Sandu and her party, voted in due to country-wide anger with this corruption that has been going.
I am not Moldovan and live thousands of miles away but I have been hearing rumors and gossip regarding Moldova that has sent shivers up and down my spine - the rumors/gossip the Russian Federation is aiming to take control of Moldova and make it part of a new USSR. This is only rumor and gossip but it is true that 20+% of Moldova is in the hands of Russians and the Russian military is located along their inner border. Moldova has not defensive partners so it stand alone and as they say when the apples are ripe "easy pickins".

It's no difference. But because FR, UK, ES, IT, GE, BE, PT etc. colonized over seas, people look at this with different eyes but actualy it's no difference. All of them did exactly the same things, slavery, violence, robbery, forcing to learn their language, deportations, stealing their goods and wealths etc.
Colonisation should not always be a bad experience and most of the time the word colonisation has a positive connotation. The UK colonised my country Malta but it was beneficial for both countries although it is subjective. Same as in other African countries many European countries established control over the indigenous people. Many African countries benefited from colonisation. The Ottoman empire conquered other countries and enslaved people which should never be called colonisation. Nowadays colonization is passe no country can colonise another it's against the UN charter.

A few years ago we went on a road trip to Romania with friends. My opinion is that Moldova's only chance for a better life is to unite with Romania. But I also think that it is economically disadvantageous for Romania, because living standards, salaries, even pensions have to be equalized, and this will cost a lot of money. Also, I think that the government in Moldova does not want this unification, because now they rule and have power, and in unification they will become ordinary regional politicians with minimal power. And let's not forget the problem of Transnistria, a very small territory, but it can create very big problems.

It would only cost and be a disadvantage for a small period of time. Romania was a 3rd world country in the 90s, it developed on turbo-mode. The part of Romania that was ripped against the population's will - is small and would not be as difficult to develop. They have also their own rather fine people, we don't need to care for them or condescend them, just help them a bit. And there would be EU funds for it.
I do not think the Transnistria problem is as big as it once was. A lot of it was dependent upon the reputation of the Russian army. So far, events on the ground and Ukraine indicate that the Russian army does not deserve that reputation and they should be fairly easy to kick out of the country. Diplomatic channels should be more than sufficient for that task. Transnistria would just have to conform to the rest of the country and be integrated into the new unified polity. Anybody who doesn’t like it can leave and I do not think the Russian army will want to intervene since they would now face a NATO country.

I knew that Romanian language (or Moldovan) had latin roots, I didn't know it was that obvious.

You understood the ex minister better because he speaks slowly in a standard Romanian with less moldovan accent compared to the other people interviewed. In Romania we also have regions with different accents, you probably have visited Transylvania or Moldova region of Romania where they also have strong accents.

I have never mentioned Romania and to be honest I donm't yet know that much about Romania. I am trying to learn as much about Moldova and Armenia as I can and now I see that I must also learn about Romania unless someone can fill me in. I am being totally honest I don't know much about Romania but I do have very faint memories of the old Romania and they are not very pleasant and that is why I ask to be brought up to now about Romania. I fear for all of Easter Europe - Putin has apparently expressed a desire to bring back the old USSR and that would in all probability include Romania as well as Armenia and Moldova. The United States, Britain, Canada can not protect the eastern world but we do not want to see the destruction of free and independent nation states either. @@rhh3582 Our history basically started when the Roman Empire conquered Dacia (succesors of Thracia) and the Romanian people were born.
Fast-forward a bit and there were 3 Romanian principalities: Transylvania in the West (mostly under Hungarian control, but still with a majority Romanian population), Wallachia in the South and Moldova in the East. The two latter principalities would often fall under Ottoman occupation.
Important note: the principality of Moldova's territory was made of the current Eastern Romania and the current territory of Moldova.
Fast forward to 1859, when Moldova and Wallachia united and in 1881 became the Kingdom of Romania.
Fast forward to 1918, and Transylvania was united with Romania as well.
During the 19th and 20th century, the current territory of Moldova (known as Basarabia) would be stolen by Russia and claimed back by Romania several times, until after WWII, when the Soviet Union forcefully took it. During the Soviet era, the Russians would do their best to convince Romanians in Moldova that they are a different nation to us.
Tldr: Romanians and Moldovans are the same people, speaking the same language, but there is a border because Russia.

Quindi attualmente è la Romania l'erede del vecchio principato di Moldavia. Currently, one out of four Moldovans has Romanian citizenship, so he is Romanian. I hope that this percentage will increase in the short term. Many Moldovans study and work in Romania and in the West. The future of Moldova is in the European Union, together with Romania.
How to solve the Transnistria issue? I don't think anyone wants to forcibly eject the Russians, it's quite clear that they are just unwitting pawns in some sadistic game of Russian imperialism, but say reunification happens, how does the EU deal with the awkward fact that it now has Russian military bases in it?

Transnistria was created on the territory of Moldova in order for Russia to control the future of Moldova. The separatist authorities in Transnistria are not recognized internationally, but they respond to Moscow's orders. It is clear that currently Moscow does not accept Moldova's exit from Russian influence by joining the European Union. Moldova can take advantage of a window of opportunity at the end of the conflict in Ukraine, when the future of the region will most likely be discussed.

Sunt capitalele unor RE-GI-UNI, unde se vorbește româna într-un anume “grai”, adică cu un anume accent dezvoltat peste secole de circumstanțe istorice diferite, ilustrate prin ocuparea regiunii de către populații migratoare mai mult sau mai puțin stabile/volatile, care migratori și-au adus influența lingvistică și culturală într-o regiune limitată a României celei mari pt perioade limitate, nu veșnice.
Romania împărțită la vremea aceea în mai multe regiuni și principate.
Principatele s-au desființat, s-a înființat în locul lor însă o țară, un regat, unde se vorbește aceeași limbă, dar în regiunile cu micile lor graiuri locale, graiurile au rămas, cum e și normal să fie și cum există în fiecare țară de pe planeta asta.
Când ne ducem acolo, in regiunile alea, prezentăm pașaport?
Au acele regiuni un guvern separat?

Te rog nu uita, Moldova nu a fost niciodată “regat” și nici “imperiu” 😃 a fost o țărișoară minusculă din Europa de Est, un p.r.i.n.c.i.p.a.t., influențată de toți vecinii, care nu și-a pus ea amprenta pe țările vecine, ci mai curând invers.
Dovadă graiul cel mai rusificat de pe orice teritoriu locuit vreodată de români; nici românii din zona Salonicului nu au asemenea accent grecesc cum au moldovenii accent rusesc.

As a native Romanian, I had no issue understanding every single word of the people talking in what was called until a few days ago another language, namely, "moldovian."

The Moldavian or Romanian languages are exactly the same, with the exception of the words forcefully introduced in the process of russification (especially technical terms and forcefully changing romanian names into some that resemble russian family names, which is disgusting but, of course, typically to the russian occupier -- along with deportations, chasings, and killings of those who resist).
You cannot hurt the feelings of a Romanian if you call our language Romaninan, Moldovian, or Vallahian. It is the same language, which was called differently as the culture evolved and cultural unification was accelerated as manuscripts began to circulate widely across our territory. Not even Stefan the Great carried what his language was called. In the actual documents, the language was recognised as Valahian, while he strongly considered himself Moldovian, which is of course acknowledged by any Romanian. Yet, looking at texts from 500 years ago written in whatever language you like to call it, as a Romanian, I can read that with no significant effort. So what's the difference if it's called Moldovian/Romanian? The most important thing is that it is called THE SAME. So, Glory to BIG ROMANIA!

Moldova has only to gain by re-uniting. Im pretty sure there is a potential in Moldova, potential in industry and trade between Balkan EU and non EU east of Europe. Romania is big brother, who can protect you from some russian separative tendencies and from relatively unstable/problematic region. Your economy would also skyrocket, Romania around 2005 was still one of a few poorest European nation, now it reached decent average almost with Portugal and Greece. I know you developed some national pride especially the older people, but I'm pretty sure if you re-united, you could negotiate some freedom, like German, Austrian states have or Scotland in the UK with some of its rights. Im pretty sure you would attract massive investments from all over Europe, like we Czechs attracted in 90s when we were a cheap, but pretty future high potential market, when we build so many factories, companies and services thanks to Germans or Dutch and we export our own owned hi tech things to all over the world.
Actually Romania is already richer then Greece since 2018 and richer than Portugal since this year.

Around 80% of the Moldovan citizens are Romanian, the rest are Ukrainian, Russian, Gagauzian, so it would be logical that at least 80% of the population would support the reunification, but this, sadly, is not the case. At the moment around 40-45 % support the reunification, at best, although this number is growing every year. As a Romanian from Moldova, I'm ashamed of this statistics. Nevertheless, people should know what the reason behind this is. And the reason is the heavy Soviet and then Russian propaganda on our people, for the last 80 years. Actually, sometimes I think it's a miracle that we still remember who we are, so I guess it depends how you look at it. Still, I am convinced that the reunification will happen sooner or later, it is only natural.
P.S. Also I would like to thank our brothers and sisters from Romania for the continous help and support for Moldova, it means the world!

That is because your statistics are wrong, at least for Chișinău and the other big towns in Basarabia, which are heavily populated by Russians, following the heavy deportation of Romanians to remote Russian regions during Stalinism. The Russian government/military is doing the same AS WE WRITE, NOW IN 2023, 21'ST CENTURY AD, to Ukrainians from Donbas and Zaporojia. In fact, the Russians protected this area from nomadic raiders and settled Moldovans there. Moldavia has many Slavs, and considering Romania's history of ethical cleansing of Slavs from the Black Sea coast and colonization with Romanians, not only there, minorities will find it difficult to submit to such a country.
Let's also not forget about the fact that besarabian bulgarians inhabit parts in the moldovian part of besarabia (They mostly inhabit the Ukrainian but still). They are an official minority in Moldova and are mostly forgotten.

The population is not pro-Russian but starting with Vladimir Voronin, after he had a visit to Moscow, lots of Kremlin money has been flowing through the political system and the politicians specifically have been very pro-Russia - this is also one of the reasons they lost so badly to Maia Sandu and her party, voted in due to country-wide anger with this corruption that has been going.
I am not Moldovan and live thousands of miles away but I have been hearing rumors and gossip regarding Moldova that has sent shivers up and down my spine - the rumors/gossip the Russian Federation is aiming to take control of Moldova and make it part of a new USSR. This is only rumor and gossip but it is true that 20+% of Moldova is in the hands of Russians and the Russian military is located along their inner border. Moldova has not defensive partners so it stand alone and as they say when the apples are ripe "easy pickins".

It's no difference. But because FR, UK, ES, IT, GE, BE, PT etc. colonized over seas, people look at this with different eyes but actualy it's no difference. All of them did exactly the same things, slavery, violence, robbery, forcing to learn their language, deportations, stealing their goods and wealths etc.
Colonisation should not always be a bad experience and most of the time the word colonisation has a positive connotation. The UK colonised my country Malta but it was beneficial for both countries although it is subjective. Same as in other African countries many European countries established control over the indigenous people. Many African countries benefited from colonisation. The Ottoman empire conquered other countries and enslaved people which should never be called colonisation. Nowadays colonization is passe no country can colonise another it's against the UN charter.

Russia (through its forms: the Tsarist Empire and the USSR) has always tried to Russify the territories it conquered, including Moldova, which is more than colonization. An example is Crimea and the fate of Crimean Tatars. Fortunately, in Moldova, Moscow's plan did not succeed completely.
