2019 Honda Monkey: Let's talk about PGM-FI's (ECU's) and how to replace them!

  • Let's find that mysterious little magic plastic box that lives under your seat!
    The WHAT:
So Honda calls it a "PGM-FI" module, but it's basically a fuel injection controller. I mention that it controls the ABS in the video, but I might have been mistaken on that and will rescind that statement. Basically, the PGM-FI is the ECU (PCM, computer, brain, black box, etc...) for the Honda Monkey and it takes the feedback from sensors hooked up to the engine (oxygen sensor, engine temp, air temp, throttle position, for some examples), processes it, then in turn tells the fuel injector how much fuel to provide the engine in relation to that data.
    The WHY:
Getting to the science of it, there's always an optimal air/fuel ratio number that will provide peak power on every engine. That number is only found on a dyno by experimenting with different air/fuel ratios and finding out which one makes the most power. The factory sets this number at a range that they consider to be beneficial to creating horsepower, but also safe for reliability and fuel consumption. At the end of the day, if you're aiming for more power, the first step to doing so is making sure you're doing that safely, which should always start with making sure your air/fuel ratio is correct. You HAVE to have enough fuel!
    The HOW:
Well, if you modify your Honda Monkey in any way that effects the air coming into, or out of your engine, you need to adjust the fuel to compensate for that change in air flow. If you change the exhaust, you're now flowing more air out of the engine, so that means you can use a little more fuel. If you change the intake to a higher flow upgrade, you're flowing more air into the engine, and could use a little more fuel. If you change the exhaust AND intake, you're now flowing a lot more air both into and out of the engine, which requires more fuel than the factory settings provide. Just and intake, or just an exhaust are typically ok as the bike can "learn" the change and provide a little more fuel. Intake and exhaust are going to demand too much fuel and the factory settings will not be able to provide the fuel needed, which will cause your air/fuel mixture to be too lean (not enough fuel) which causes a noticeable lack in power, and long-term engine wear as fuel is also a HUGE factor in cooling an air-cooled engine!
Asking your bike to give you more fuel can be done in a few different ways:
    1. Reprogram your ECU to tell it you need more fuel
    2. Add a piggyback/secondary controller to alter the signals of the factory ECU to "trick" the ecu into thinking its feedback from the sensors is "low" and in turn, the ECU provides more fuel based on these false readings.
    3. Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, bigger injector, and or fuel pump. Neither of these things are market items on the Monkey, so they're off the table.
In this video I explain these things briefly and show you how to remove the PGM-FI unit in case you want to ship it to a pro to reprogram. I also mention listing a few tuners, they are:

Note that housing attachment has changed for 2023 Monkey. There is no clip on the bottom near wires. You slide the rubber coated plastic housing FORWARDS (towards front of bike) and off of the two side metal prongs. It is not easy to slide. Then remove rubber cover from housing. Then there is a grey clip at one end you need to pull back and away then you can remove the ECU.

This video was is amazing. Ive been a little lost on if the pgmfi was the whole ecu or not. Im working with a different bike but this just answered so many questions

@jecuyer6026 comment on the grey clip need to pulled out and then the ecu pulls out did the trick. I was looking at how to pull off the plug on my 2023 Monkey until I saw his comment. Once I saw the grey clip and pulled it out, the ecu came out.

Nice video, but why no mention about the Dyno jet power vision 3? You can download tunes on it and transfer them to your stock ECU. No piggyback needed. It comes with a cold air intake and yoshimura pipe tune already loaded on it. Would you ever consider the big bore kit?

I’ve really only have experience with the PCV on my Grom and the Bazzaz on the Monkey. There are some really cool products on the market, I wish I could test them all!

Do piggyback units like power commander solve snatchy throttle issue like the bigger bikes have nowadays, if I left the same intake and exhaust on?

Nice video good quality information . I live in the uk and have a 2015 Honda cbr125r it uses the same ecu I think only difference is the CBR is water cooled. Has anyone put a sand alone ECU on any of these bikes ?

I listed two known good sources in the description. Cameron Jones I know for a fact has based his tunes off of a Monkey. DH I saw works with Cameron Jones, so the tunes might be one in the same
