Wow! Welcome to Michigan! Ann Arbor was lucky to have you visit. As Steve Carlson says “you’re the nicest person”. I like your sweatshirt! Melinda, do you mean George Piros? He’s the cat that did the mastering on those 77 Zeppelin reissues. Yes, in Michigan, if you’re willing to get down and look at the boxes below the bins, you can find gold. I found an original Santana Abraxas UK pressing! I watch so many people just skip those bins. They refuse to even look at them. They show them zero respect! I hope you can meet Steve Carlson next time!

If I ever get to come back for a longer visit, I would love to meet Steve. The lower bins were pretty cool but hard on my back. Lol.
The deadwax of the LZ album says Pecko Duck which to my knowledge is George Peckham. I would have been just as happy with a George Piros pressing though. 🔥♥️ Thank you and take care.

You are the Indiana Jones of the VC😁. I cannot believe you found that original pressing of London Calling down in the bottom bins. And you were smart to pick up that In Through the Out Door because it seems to be getting very hard to find a good copy in the wild. I’ve never seen that Paul McCartney album before. Nice find! Even though I’m an Ohio State fan I’ll overlook that Go Blue sweatshirt you’re wearing since you are a VC mentor lol. Nice that you got to see your daughter. Nice to see Karla Bonoff get a mention. Coincidentally, I recently got hold of some of her CD's after going on a shameless nostagia binge and revisiting the TV show The Wonder Years from my childhood, one of which episode featured her song Goodbye My Friend. It just got me and had to hear more of her gorgeous voice. Also extra props for Can's Tago Mago. Brilliant band/album and my favourite of theirs if I had to pick one. All their first 5 records are worth checking out, not least those with Damo Suzuki on vocs.

I bought this album when I was in 8th or 9th grade. It blew me away! Whole lp is pure emotion and reflects the changes going on in America between the late 60s and early 70's. If you were alive in this period of time, and old enough to listen to rock or pop music, it was just a feast of talent , creativity, emotion. People are discovering today,, just how good the music was in the classic rock era (1964-1985). Deja Vu , by CSNY is my favorite album of all time!!

always interesting to get a collectors viewpoint. Also appreciate genuine enthusiasm and hearing from someone talk about records without 1. A beard. 2. black rimmed eyeglasses. 3.Black Tee shirt 4. shaved head , or any variation of those style choices.
The mention of ebony and ivory triggered a long ago memory of a picture posted in a Beverly Hills audio salon, of the bed they made that Jackson presented as a gift to McCartney on the occasion of the recording. a price of around a hundred and fifty thousand dollars was included in the brief description.
It was of a four poster canopy bed, no canopy , with what looked like black computer speakers , facing downward and in, mounted atop each of the four posts, which were each connected with a single long ebony branch . It was just weird to my eye, all of rustic black ebony, so the whole thing looked like it was made out of long branches, not lumber . the branches were trimmed, with the branches of side growth trimmed to small stumps, with the wood being wild and craggily , but straight enough for the need.. I trust it looked better in person, this was just a slightly enlarged black and white snapshot, and the bed looked a little thin on top , not very substantial because of the tapering of the uprights. in the picture, it looked like it somehow survived a house fire, from the distorted assembled shapes and solid black color.
I suppose a gift like that is perfect for a charity auction, and actually showed great skill in selection, being a little too big for a Christmas white elephant gift exchange.
    .

The '14 Page reissues generally don't do it for me- so I decided to give a chance to a somewhat beat-up copy of II, in a beat-up lp jacket, that I'd gotten years before from my brother-in-law's collection that he'd dumped, but that I'd never gotten to because I just assumed it would sound like crap (I tend to take good care of LP jackets, and particularly good care of my LPs themselves)
Well, despite a lot more surface noise than I'd typically tolerate- there was a fair amount- the pressing was soooo dynamic and tonally rich and overall wounderful, particularly on side one, that I had to check if it was a Ludwig pressing. It wasn't, but it sounds incredibly dynamic for a standard release or an lp in general- what I've heard referred to as a 'hot stamper.' It's a testament to its slam and overall appeal that the frequent background crackling only minimally bugs me, that overall the listening experience still far beats either an early cd of it or the '14 edition- but would be a rule-out on just about any other record. Lesson learned- don't rule out an lp based on its appearance; conversely, of course, there are as we all know many LPs that look mint and lots of surface noise 'baked in.' But the LZ II experience of mine is happily the opposite kind of experience..

I only recently discovered Krautrock, through Can and Tago Mago. I am amazed I was never really exposed to it, outside of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. It just floors me, and is currently my favourite genre. Halleluhwah is absolutely epic, one of my favourite songs now. I have the release you showed, and was lucky enough to find an original German pressing at the den Bosch show in the Netherlands, I agree the recent release (it is a digtally sourced remaster) sounds good, but the original is truly amazing!

@@MelindaMurphy You may know that MOFI and analog productions also make SACD. if it says Hybrid, it means that it also has a track that can be played on a normal CD player, but then of course the sound quality will not be the same. SACD gives the possibility to transfer, for example, three channel stereo from a master tape from the 1950s. Or maybe the surround sound that was on vinyl records in the 70s. In those days you needed a decoder. now they can probably transfer the separate audio channels from the master tape to separate tracks on the disc. At least it would be possible. today there are also Blu-ray audio discs. But the other thing that makes them Thulin, among other things universal

I agree MCA pressings are pretty hit and miss. Usually the black/rainbow (1973 design) and the Beige (1978) design are usually decent sounding. The post 1980 rainbow and clouds pressings are usually horrible as they were trying to do everything on the cheap. I also never liked the quality of 1980s Arista pressings.

    Really enjoyable Melinda!
The copy of Hydra - what a steal! Toto’s first few albums sound really great. They are so well produced and recorded. Classic rock from that period!
Some years ago, when I was releasing some of my music on vinyl ( I intend to do it again by the way, as streaming is essentially robbery!! The late David Crosby and I had many one to one twitter discussions yearsback about it. )
Anyway, I took my analogue master tapes to Porky’s Prime Cuts and met George Peckham. As you know he’d cut The Beatles, Kate Bush and so many of the great EMI artists. I spent a few hours with him, sitting right next to the lathe as it was doing the cut. He had some fascinating stories and anecdotes about his ‘tweaking’ of levels and EQ. This was a really happy memory and a special meeting. Needless to say, he wrote in the out groove #PORKY PRIME CUT on the A side and ‘SCHOOL FOR SECRETS’ on the flip side. I remember him misspelling ( or perhaps it was Kate ) ‘Remember Yourself’ on her album Lionheart. It is inscribed ‘REMBER YOURSELF’
Ah, the fascination of the LP is boundless! Best wishes! Stewart 🙏🏻

Great finds! McCartney is amazing! The Zeppelin album in pristine condition is great! Usually a rough one bc played lots! You are correct when you see the VRP inner sleeves (valuable record protecter)sleeves were from Discwasher ! I have many of those! Original LS album is a super-find! Pretty rare! A must have for the Skynyrd collector! Haha going in the bins below kills my knees so usually pass unless I see something in the front😢
    Great video and find’s Melinda!

I agree. I'm too old to dig in the lower bins but I did find some cool records.
The Lynyrd Skynyrd album is a hard one to find and the story surrounding it is so sad. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

The flame cover was reinstated for a 90’s Gold CD (“MCA Master” - I think that was the series at the time), and the standard expanded CD release (and the two CD Deluxe Edition). Has been the standard cover ever since. (And, Street Survivors actually showed where Skynyrd was possibly going, with both Ronnie and Steve both doing lead vocals.)

Oh god! The tan label era! I never liked that design, or the more known Tan Rim design…thankfully it was only used from apparently late 1977 to 1980.

Nice pick ups, Melinda! Gotta admit, I'm not a fan of "Hydra", it's the only Toto album that I think maybe should never have been released, especially as the follow up to their debut album. "99" is a great song, but I saw them on the "Hydra" tour, and they were AWFUL! As for the Karla Bonoff, what a great VCLT - that debut album is a MASTERPIECE, particularly "Someone To Lay Down Beside Me", one of the best songs of all time. Love that debut album for sure! She should have been bigger than she ever was as an artist, without question. Take care!

I agree. She should have been up there with Linda Ronstadt in popularity. She is very talented.
I'm surprised Toto was so bad. What a disappointment. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

Remember getting my original copy of Street Survivors. If you look there is a list of places Skynyrd would have done a concert at. Remember an Interview at the local radio station WYNF with Ronnie and Gary, maybe Allen not sure. The last time Ronnie Van Zant would sing Freebird in St. Petersburg, Lakeland and Greenville, South Carolina. Been to Gillsburg and meet Lola Easly. Been to Riverside Memorial Cemetery and Jacksonville Memory Gardens. Just thinking what a Talent Steve Gaines was. Wondering what Steve, Ronnie, Gary and Allen would come up next Following Street Survivors. God Bless Johnny and Rickey and the rest of Skynyrd. And bless the first responders who saved 20 people that tragic night in Mississippi. Have a good one Melinda.

I'm too young to really remember that but I'm sure it was heart breaking for the families and fans. They made some great music and unfortunately, their lives were just too short. Thank you and take care.

I had to laugh when you mentioned the MCA label and Elton John records. In that collection I was given a couple of years ago, there were some Elton John LPs in it and I was really disappointed by how non hi-fi they sounded. They were really dull and honestly terrible sounding I thought.
I was out of town on Saturday and when I was coming back Saturday evening I was explaining that same exact thing about those Elton John MCA titles from the 1970s to the two friends I was riding with. Somebody had brought him up in the car and it brought that to mind. I've never heard anybody else mention this until your video today Melinda.
I'm going to have to look and see but I've noticed the same exact thing with 1970s John Denver albums. I just looked and it's not MCA but RCA that put those out. I've only got two that came in that collection that was given to me. I'm not really a collector of him even though I grew up and have fun memories that do go with certain songs he made popular back in the '70s. But the audio quality and sound was just so muffled sounding to me with the mid-range and high end frequencies just not being present is the best way I can think of describing those 1970s Elton John and John Denver albums. But on the other hand, I've also got some great sounding MCA 1970s records and probably RCA too. So I don't know what the story is on why those popular artists didn't have better sounding albums?
I'm glad you had a good trip seeing your daughter and record shopping. I actually went to a ham radio convention but came back with some Linda Ronstadt, Robin Trower, and a few other LPs that one of the ham radio vendors was selling at a table. They were all 1970s originals, used, and at a $1.67 a piece and being extremely clean and incredible sounding, that was kind of the icing on the cake for a good weekend trip :-)

I love Gary Wright “The Dream Weaver”! I love the music and it’s an excellent sounding record! Unfortunately it was sold off with a huge chunk of my record collection. I definitely need to rebuy it. I also LOVE Karla Bonoff! Also had all her albums but, sold them off. I have a lot of vinyl I need to rebuy!

It's a little tricky to find The Dream Weaver in excellent condition but there are a lot of quiet passages so a great copy is a must. I am probably going to let some of my collection go and I always worry that I will let something go that I regret later. I guess that happens and isn't the end of the world. Lol. Thank you and enjoy your weekend.

Good Morning 🌞 Melinda - I used to live up north in Traverse City, Mi where Steve Carlson has some stores he overlooks & Madonna has her Cicconne Vineyards. Some fine wine 🍷. Love The Clash & Can & Gary Wright records. Everybody should own & enjoy London Calling. 😊

A home-run right out of the shoot. I think Paul's live fantastic is my favorite live with a second only to Paul is live. ( I'm screaming on that record. ) I'm glad you had a good time. I went to my local half-price books and records and found the Beatles Thirty days in 1963. I was sealed and played great for 14.99 . I also bought a 1st pressing of days of future passed . That's the first record for g3.Great picks all in all. I went to Tidal and listened to the Can album and it was pretty good. Question for you, have you looked at rsd black friday and found anything to your liking? I have a couple must haves my self. Have yourself a great day and give a call when you have time. I have important to talk to about. Take Care. ❤

Hello Melinda ! Making surprise finds in a different store is alway a joy. You made a great haul. This past weekend I went to the more ”serious” collector store in our neighbour town. And where I expected to find mostly obscure stuff , I found a whole row of crates with non sorted stuff that the regular customers have no interest in. All mostly forgotten mainstream pop music from my party days in the 80’s :
    Q-feel
    The Flirts
    Bolland
    Indochine
    Nena
    Kajagogo
    Men without hats
    F R David
    Devo
    Telex
    Data
    Landscape
    Between $2-$5 EACH !!!!!!!
I’m going back this weekend. I’m gonna hit the ”80’s soundtrack” crates , HARD !!!!!
Take care /R (A at work)

@@MelindaMurphy : Sorry , me again. Annette says I must mention that the Q-feel album (the only one they released) is like a time-machine for us. Back to the early 80’s when we met. Teeny-boppy synthpop we danced to. They had the song ”Dancing in heaven” in the Sarah Jessica Parker/Helen Hunt movie ”Girls just want to have fun” from 1985. Aah , sweet youth. Where have you gone? Take care A&R
