Knocker Uppers are still around in the form of moms ❤
Very true!!! I never would have thought that people made a career out of waking other people up.
I think I'll start charging my teenage sons for waking them up for school and work!!!😂
Thank You J.D. for sharing this intriguing story with us. ❤❤❤
I'm an _involuntary_ early-riser. Since menopause hit, my eyes don't close until around 11pm each night, but they pop open with a vengeance at 4:40 am every...single...morning 😫 It's 6:40am here on the East Coast of the U.S. right now and my day started two hours ago! I've NEVER been an early-riser in my life until now. I really miss sleeping 😴🛌💤
Omg me too!!! I used to require at least a solid 10 hrs. Until I had my daughter. I've never slept more than 5 hours at a time since. I'm like an old lady.
@AlphaFemmeXtine I'm an older lady & can say your comment is absolutely 💯 right 😊
JD my wife was walking past the screen when she saw the title. She found a song about them, on line ,her mother sang to her when she was little about the knocker uppers as she was an Irish lady herself. You sure have a great variety of good story's.
@@cathydemarest3572 She googled it and like many folk songs there were variations of it.
@@cathydemarest3572 She Googled it and found , like many folk songs , variations of it.
I have never heard of a knocker upper. Very interesting story that makes perfect sense. Funny the person that said moms are the new knocker uppers. I sometimes needed more than a pea shooter to wake my kids when they were little. Lol Thanks for another fun history lesson. ❤😊
We are placed on his earth to teach and to learn. I have again been given the opportunity to learn. Thanks JD.
Not exactly where my mind took me when title was exposed .LOL
Thanks JD
History is a great lesson for people in the know .
Who would have ever have thought it!!!
My daughter would need the knocker upper to carry a bag of dynamite .
Me too. My friends and family always tell me I could sleep thru the noise of a fire truck/alarm. Also whole conversations while I’m still asleep!🤣🤣👻🎃
Thank you, JD. I never heard this till today. Thanks for sharing.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you, JD, for sharing another great story. I always learn something from listening to your interesting and enjoyable videos.
Have a blessed Saturday.
Your story telling skills truly are the best , you could make the story of mud drying in the sun the most interesting thing I have ever heard . I hope you have a extra awesome weekend 😄
I have honestly never heard of these before.. interesting and humorous at the same time
What an interesting piece of history. I never knew this was a part of our history. Thank you for bringing the old forgotten ways back to life. I'm really enjoying your book. I hope you have plans for another one.
Thank you for a really interesting story. It's a true piece of history. I never heard about before. ❤
Thank you Maria, it's a different type of story, but I thought it was really neat! Glad you enjoyed it
I knew this, for some they should still use this service. Thank you for sharing this amusing tale.❤🎃🍁
Early in the morning and a new video! I’d have made a good Knocker!! I haven’t used an alarm clock in over 15 years. I wake EVERY morning between 4-4:30 without fail.
That was very interesting! I knew what knocker-uppers were, but the details are fascinating! And they did that job for SO LONG! Thank you!
JD I have read of this in old England, but had no idea we did it here also. Man i would've been one that would need to pay for this service. Great video.
This is from Europe.. I just told the story based on what appalachian ancestors did on the other side of the world.
Good morning JD! Very interesting story that I have never heard before. I always have been an early riser even before the chickens, lol.
I would go stoke the fire and add more wood in the stove before anyone else got up. Then I would go to the kitchen and start the coffee and breakfast for my husband and children.
My how the world has changed since I was a child, so fast paced and everyone is in a hurry.
Have a very blessed weekend with your family!
I am retired and have Anemia, I sleep from about 10:00 pm to 11:00 am and wouldn't want to be awakened like in this presentation. It was an interesting presentation nonetheless; thank you Appalachian Storyteller.
Each story is a real work of Art. If I was your mama I’d be so proud.❤️🙏🏼
I sure could have used a human wake up call in my 20s! At the school where I work, we have a list of students who need a call in the morning to make it to classes on time. Great video!
I love this bit of history. Never heard about it.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ❤️🇺🇸
JD this was interesting to hear about happening in the USA. I’ve read of this happening in England. I had no idea this practice occurred here. Great information as always. I love the manner in which you engage the readers with your voice and words! You are a cut above! Thank you JD! Have a fantastic weekend!
Thank you, JD! I love this story of our past history. These were amazing people to do this for all of us sleepy people!
Early to bed-early to rise!
I work 12 hours a day with one day off a week. Up at 12 midnight at work by 1am
My wife is my knocker upper after 4 alarms she shakes me awake! Hahahaha
Thank you JD! Another awesome story from days gone by!
Hello. I can’t help but wonder just what you do for a living?? Please share? How can you work so many damn hours, as this is major overtime! Such determination on your part! Wow
@@karenroot450
I work for the U.S.P.S.
I work on the machines at the plant that sort the mail and process it I love what I do! Wouldn’t change it for anything! The hours may seem unhinged for some but I am blessed! Normally it’s only 52 hours a week but we’ve had people leave and we are very short staffed so until the positions are filled the rest of us pick up the slack! This won’t be a forever thing so until it goes back to “normal” my wife understands and supports me as well!
Oh what a wonderful way to go to bed! A story and a history lesson! I was actually wondering about this the other day! Thanks❤😂
J.D. I'm feel sure this question will get some attention, but how did getting knocked up go from being awakened to meaning pregnant.. also, I am an early riser, not sure why, I just wake up without an alarm and have for years. Usually way earlier than I need to. Anyway, hope the family is doing good. My 6th grader has decided on playing the tuba in the band. If he sticks with it, I'll be taking out a loan.. 😂😂
🤣 knocker uppers means something totally different in the 1800’s but I know folks are gonna “nail” me on it on this video 😆
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I just picked up on the "nail" pun. And I regret my "hammer" pun 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller - That's part of what makes travel so much fun. In certain countries people won't say they'll phone or drop by. There the expression is 'knock you up' which doesn't mean the same thing it does here. Most such customs vary with time, but I'm honestly convinced the bible story of Jonah and the whale might be somehow derivative of an expression still current in at least some parts of the Mideast. There the saying that someone swallowed a big fish still means they fell for an obviously fake story. Now I don't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers, and I know it won't upset you, JD - but that region has historically used a lot of symbolism in speech, and it's really possible that parts of the bible were never meant to be taken literally. Jonah being swallowed by a big fish is a likely example. It has an important truth to convey, just not necessarily literal in the telling. Most of us don't feel like we're lying when we tell little kids about Santa either. Me, one of my favorite Christmas movies is still The Polar Express, and I'm 79. Well, I like it at least as much as Bad Santa which also has a sweetness tucked away deep inside.
@TheAppalachianStoryteller I learned something new cause as a woman of the 1900s I'm always wanting to learn new things. But nice to know knockers upers were different back then.
My goodness JD what an interesting story!! Can't wait to get my second edition of your book!!
I had the same question as Rusty 😅. Never heard of this profession. Thanks for the story!
Emily I’m sure lots of folks will have questions, I’m bracing for the storm 🤣
Now at first hearing I'd have thought being a knocker upper would be a man's job, at least back then. Never stop learning, is my motto.
Thanks. I've been enjoying your stories, not one disappointed. I can't help but think of the stories going on around in some parts there now affected by the hurricane. I'm sure their resilience will shine thru.
Yes- the is destruction in every direction around us but we were sparred, a truly historic event
I remember hearing about the knockers. Just amazing. I pray you are safe after the hurricane
JD, I get such comfort hearing Leaning On the Everlasting Arms playing in the background. For some, it is just background music, but for others there is deep comfort in the knowledge,..
Great true story JD. Please keep these.true stories going. Your a great story teller. I've seen the knoker upper in historically piturces before, thank you for sharing this with us ❤🎉❤
This was such an interesting video!
Imagine being a knocker upper and waking up realizing you have overslept. The anxiety would be unbearable.
Thank you ...... again
I knew what a knocker upper was before watching but still enjoyed the video.
Thanks JD.
Wow JD.
Who’d thunk to tell this story, I’m glad they told you about it. Man we can sit here and listen to you read the phone book. You sure know how to tell a story. So glad we found ya. Keep it up buddy.
Awesome idea lol. Thank you for sharing with us. God bless you and your whole family....🙏🙏🙏
What a deal all of that was....The KNOCKER UPPERS.....Thank you brother JD.....
Old F-4 Shoe🇺🇸
Wow never heard of that before , great story and real interesting JD . Thanks
Another great story about little known parts of history. And no JD, I couldn't have done it.
At the age of 10 my grandpa left Appalachia in southern Kentucky to get a job with the southern railroad.
I am not a morning person, but I could probably do this job. I am a night owl and would probably still be awake when it was time to start knocking Thanks for sharing!
I'm not a early morning person but I've worked third shift and sleeping in the day time was ok 🤣. Good story thanks JD
This is amazing history! The farmers woke up by roosters, but I never thought of factory workers not having alarm clocks.
Already knew what was up, but stopped in anyways. Just like your stories. I'm still a knocker upper, each morning I have to get my kids up for school.😊
For a minute there I thought you going to explain the other definition of a "Knock Her Upper" 😉
Oh JD! You have done it again! Seeing the title, my mind went in different directions all at the same time! lol. What an ingenious idea for that time period! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m not an early riser! When I was younger, I had to work night shifts & I felt like I never got any sleep! So now that I’m 74 and retired, I get up when I want & go to bed the same way. Blessings my dear friend!
Hey y’all! Whether or not you’re a subscriber…(we hope so!), you’ve got to buy JD’s book!! I have it and I love it and highly recommend you purchasing it! I guarantee you will love it!! So, hurry up and grab it fast! And….. I thank you ahead of time! ❤️🙏😊
We had these in Liverpool uk ...the lamp lighter ( gas lampposts) often doubled as the knocker upper ..
Very interesting JD. I have heard about them in England. I wouldn't make a good Knocker cuz that's usually my bedtime. Love the quiet nights when most are sleeping and no cars.
Europe had them as well. Pretty nice gig for making a little extra.
How interesting didn’t know this career existed!
I hope you and yours are well. So concerned about everyone.
We escaped without harm, but within 30 miles of every direction there is destruction.
Lol...great piece of history.
I've always been a night owl. I've tried to change, but it never worked...
Thanks JD😎👍
The Irish are known for their nocturnal nature. Love the stories J.D. If you are looking for more interesting trends, look up the graveyard shift. What it means to be saved by the bell and why (it's said) we have wakes for the dead.
Early riser ya say lol the crack dawn wakes up to me having my 2nd cup of coffee lol :-) thanks for the story :-) God bless and stay safe
I had a friend in the early 1980's who was a merchant Marine for out of the UK. He talked to me about someone getting "knocked up" on the ship. It referred to a man waking another man up. In the US, at the time to be " knocked up" would have referred to a woman getting pregnant outta wedlock.
A hilarious, big difference in meanings
There were Knocker uppers performing their daily rounds all the way until the 1970s.
“Nowadays they’ve all but disappeared”. You mean there are still some roaming the early morning streets?
Someone told me earlier in the comments that Queen Elizabeth used a knocker upper until she died
Well JD that was fabulous, I’d never heard of such a job.
I suffer from insomnia and when I finally get to sleep I hear nothing. I can have an alarm set inches from my sleeping head and not hear it. It is a problem to be sure. My late husband was an early riser and I was never awoken by him getting up.
Strange though, I drove buses for years and when I was on the early shift I’d be up at 3 am bright and bushy tailed, no trouble waking up, but these days I could do with a knocker up for sure 🤣
Thank you for sharing that Victoria, you know once upon a time I drove a school bus
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller well there you go, we have common ground. Did you enjoy it?
And all this time I thought knocker uppers were baby daddies that can't be found .🤪
“These Vampires “ 🤣🤣🤣
I would love to see ladies with pea shooters waking ppl up in the mornings 😂. Could you imagine. Love this one JD!
I guessed right 🤠
In Britain they might say
I'll knock you up on my way by..
Meaning I'll knock on your door and make sure you're up.
In the infantry we were awaysl waking people up at all hrs..
Lots of varying reactions.
Some violent.
I get up at 4 a.m. for work. Phone alarm set and alarm clock across the room set 5 minutes later. Scared the electricity will go out and no alarm.
It's a good thing knocker uppers mean something different back then. Because that would be awkward lol 😂
When I was a little toddler, I'd get up before dawn to have breakfast with him. He'd slurp his coffee from the saucer so loud and I always laughed. He'd pour me a cup of coffee into a green cup grandma got from a box of detergent. Of course, my coffee was mostly milk but it was the best. These days, it's 4 legged knocker uppers who want their breakfast.
Now that's so cool thank God for alarm clocks
Our dad kept ball bearings in the freezer. If we weren't up within a few seconds after told to get up, he snagged those frozen ball bearing and dumped them on the mattress.
The modern hotel desk clerk is a knocker upper with their wake up calls. A far cry from yesteryear.
Thank goodness for our human roosters! What a smart way for someone to bring in some income!
Yeah; I knew about knocker-uppers but I'm almost old enough to have heard 'em myself. A lot of life remains a mystery to me anyway, such as how most other people with rural experience love those bleepin' roosters that want to rev up at 3:30 a.m. Never knew one myself that would wait for dawn. And while I'm an early riser by nature, to me the best alarm clock is a good huntin' dawg who stays indoors at night. When the rest of the world outside starts rising, he'll smell and/or hear something to chase. And guess what? He'll wake you up to let him out. Except for winter my idea of sleeping in is being left in peace until 6 or 6:30.
My dog lays like a doormat each morning not wanting to get out of her bed 🤣
Your right sometimes roosters do crow at 3 AM. I think it has to do with planetary alignment or something.
It's 6AM our rooster is at it already 😄
I have two alarms to wake me up. My alarm clock and my tom cat. Tom wants his food; so, he will not stop crying and knocking at my bedroom door until I walk out into the hallway. Then we go to the kitchen, where I open a can of cat food, and feed him and his sister. I would think being a Knocker Upper could be a dangerous job. Maybe people back then were not as rude and hateful as people are today.
I called my knocker-upper "Mom."
