  • In Wellington we left the North Island by ferry. A comfortable campervan awaits us in Blendheim for a wonderful roundtrip of 30 days on the South Island.
In Picton we stayed in a lovely appartment on thes shore. Picton is a cozy small town. From here we visted the Charlotte Sound by boat and car.
First stop is the Abel Tasman NP with its bright green and blue sea and prestine beaches.
The pancake rocks (with powerful blowholes) and surrounding of Punakaiki is a 'must' and was one of the highlights of our trip.
With a helicopter we flew to the Franz Jozef glacier for a spectaculair 2 hour walk.We were lucky because the last 4 days this trip was cancelled because of the bad weather.
On the hidden Monro beach we looked for the rare crested penguin. From here the road to Wanaka is so beautiful that we wanted to drive it twice.
After cozy Queenstown we headed for the famous Milford en Doubtful Sound. The boat tours were great depite the bad weather.
In the far south we viseted the small Steward island. The best plave to spot kiwis in the wild. A recommended sidetrip.
Te Catlins (South East) are special because of the dense forest and huge sheep farms. In the forest hidden waterfalls were worth the walks.
Otago peninsula near Dunedin was a bit of a disappointment. Lot a settlements and a busy road lead you to the end of the peninsula, where the Albatros centre was a real tourist trap. In the area it is possible to see the blue penguins come ashore at dawn. The East coast of Otago is rough with several seal colonies.
Mount Cook is the highest peak in New Zealand. In the surrounding you can make great hikes. We did the populair Hooker valley trail to the glacier (lake).
After lake Takapo we visited Christchurch. A cozy town where the centre is destroyed in 2010 and 2011 by an earthquake.
With a short stop in historic Omaru we ended our trip in Kaikuru, the whale capital of New Zealand. By plane we saw a sperm whale from above, but the most spectaculair thing to do here is swimming with dolphins.
We spent 2 hour with a very playful goup of 350 dusky dolfins!
