BUST James Cameron's BALLS; the actors are just the messenger but if Jack were played by Crispin Glover he'd certainly have an opinion that would have halted production for HOURS and created a possible defamation lawsuit
Did everybody forget that in the movie Jack tries to climb up to the door and it starts to tilt and that's why he stays in the water? Ma man Jack knew what he was doing.
James Cameron answered the question the only way it mattes when he said something to the effect of "the script says that Jack dies, so he dies. The door is irrelevant, it doesn't matter."
Everyone should've known jack was going to die the moment he talked about knowing it was like to be in those icy waters to Rose as he tried to save her life in the beginning. It's all full circle story telling 😢
There's an entire video where James Cameron recreates that scene in order to test the argument, he proved through that experiment that with both Jack and Rose on the door their combined weight would have submerged the door to the point where they would no longer be out of the water enough to survive thus both would have died.
Fair enough, but the fact they weren't even willing to try is telling. Can you imagine that in real life? "Is there room for me?" "Probably not. Better to not try and find out." "Okay."
The TV show Myth Busters did the same thing maybe a decade ago. They thoroughly tested the problem. They got a door the same size and tested in calm waters. There is no way 2 people could stay on that door. It is one person only!!!!
ok see.... being OUT of the water vs hanging onto the door would be the thing. i don't remember that they were really out of the water in either case. plus, you're wet. so... idk. i think stability is less an issue if you're just hanging to it like a life preserver. idk.......... i remember the scene as just being HUH??? so i'd say they needed to handle it just a little different to make things more clear to everyone. leo getting up there and it starts to slip, i figured he was just clumsy because water and you know, freezing. never seemed like a buoyancy problem or a "we won't both be able to stay out of the water" problem. audience sees a "we don't fit" discrepancy. script should have had a "it won't hold both of us up out of the water. we'll sink."
The hard fact is that if James somehow felt during filming that the door could fit both of them and stay afloat, then he would’ve found another way to end Jack. He’s the writer of the story and his intention was always that Jack would not survive
I can't remember where I read it but James Cameron got so tired of people asking him that question, sot he actually did a demonstration to prove that he was right.
I love her.... and I love she doesn't remember if the door was intact. The characters are brought to life by these actors but they move on and do other things, one day she's Rose next day she's Alex. To us it's hard to imagine but to them it's like changing clothes.
Most of an actor's day is spent waiting around, reading their lines or goofing off, scenes are shot then edited, they don't know themselves what's going to end up in the movie or not.
Mythbusters tested this years ago, and what happens is exactly what Kate Winslet said. He gets on the door, it gets unstable and both of them fall off.
But even though they both could fit and even if they found a way to somehow make it stable they would both be submerged by freezing water meaning they both would have died from hypothermia before the lifeboat returned. And plus did we all miss the part in the movie where jack tries to get on the door but it ends up tipping 😭
Thank you! Everyone keeps talking about the door tipping. Even if the door didn’t tip (which we know it would because it did when Jack tried to get on) it wouldn’t matter because the weight of them both would’ve submerged the door more which means there would’ve been several inches of water which they were laying on which would’ve cause hypothermia to set in quicker & they both would’ve died. It always amazes me how people have this debate but never think of that part.
@@joshuasteward6097 That would have destroyed the flow of the narrative. Can you imagine how that would have completely ground the emotional arc of the film to a halt? Oh, time to add thirty minutes of these two trying and failing to get the one piece of paneling to support both of them just so no one questions it.
Even if he could have fit, had he approached the door differently, people have to remember that they were in freezing cold water, fighting for their lives, with god knows how many chemicals shooting through their bodies. It would be impossible to think clearly and logically in that scenario. Jack effectively sacrificing himself to save Rose makes infinitely more sense than any mathematical approach to him fitting on the door.
You are correct I believe it was one of the behind the scenes from the movie he tried every angle he could think of. Ov course it wouldn't have worked at all.
a) In the movie, the scene includes Jack attempting to get on the door and it tipping over b) Mythbusters tested this and the door was not able to hold two people. It's not a controversy at all, they could not have both fit (and stayed stably afloat) on that dang door!
That's it! I have been saying this for years. I felt like I was the only one who actually watched that scene. Yes, he might have fit! That is not the issue. The issue was that when he tried to get up on it it tipped. He couldn't get on it without knocking her off. Why do people get so upset about this. It was right there in the movie. lol
This, 1000% this. So Kate Winslet is correct, while he might have fit, neither one would have survived long enough for the rescue boats to come pick them up.

I agree with Kates awesome answer. Buoyancy depends of the forces acting against it. A door only has so much buoyancy, and 1 adult may not exceed it, but 2 adults most likely would. Roses survival depended on the door keeping her out of the water far enough to slow down hypothermia setting in.
I think people don’t take into account the devastating effect that freezing water has on the muscles. Your coordination is so impaired after being submerged for just a few minutes that it’s unlikely anyone could have climbed up on the door.
My issue was they didn't show enough attempts. Rose trying to help Jack on the door, or them taking turns. I also don't find it believable that there was no lifeboat for them. Most of the lifeboats were not full.
Jack tried but knew it would kill Rose too. Also - if he doesn’t die then there is no payoff of seeing her really take advantage of her life and live it to the fullest. He has to die for all of that to carry any weight. Movies!
