I believe that this song is about learning to let go of someone you love. I found this song as I was going through a very painful divorce. I had tried everything humanly possible to save the marriage and actually made myself mentally and physically ill in my attempts to save the relationship. Nothing I did was enough. I had to let go. I still love my ex-husband very much and I wish him the best, but I love myself and Christ so much more. Goodbye was the thing that's ever happened to me. I'm still healing, but I am so much better once I chose to let go of the image of the man I fell in love with. He isn't there anymore.
