The irony is that one of the biggest issues in today's politics is immigration. Unless they are pure Native American, everyone has roots and ties to another country, not matter how distant. Many cultures helped to build the country, but we all belong to one nation no matter what beliefs.
We all could take a lesson from the grandma, knowing we’re all proud and connected Americans, waving the flag while having a personal and familial connection to another land.
Even 100% First Nations are descendants of immigrants. Just immigrants who walked across a land bridge that connected Siberia to Alaska in the last Ice Age.

Might I point out a flaw in the recipe for The Great American Melting Pot: while Europeans are listed by nationality (Armenians, Norwegians, Portuguese, etc.), there is just the generic identification of "Africans" for the fifty-plus nationalities on the African continent. I know it wasn't a deliberate slight, but this is an example of unintentional marginalization of non-European nationalities, especially those of African origin. As a Baby Boomer, my generation enabled and perpetuated this way of thinking and it is no credit to ourselves and our posterity.
My origins are from Greece and Mexico with some French on the Greek side and Spanish intermingled on the Mexican side. Racism and discriminatory laws divide us as a people. Remember, while there will always bad seeds out there, the good ones far outnumber the bad. The bad just get better press . . . . Hoping for a brighter future for us all.
My father’s family is Mexican in origin, and my mother’s family is English & Celtic in origin… as flawed & divided as our great nation is, I’m still proud to be an American! 🇺🇸
I and every ancestor I can trace were born here, but ultimately unless one is Native American, one can trace one's ancestry to an immigrant. I take pride in every person who comes here for a better life. I wish more Americans felt the same.
It's really very sad that this ideal has been forgotten. Young children are being taught about the "melting pot" in school, and yet there are people trying to shut out Mexican immigrants.-sigh- I'm just so disappointed in my country... On a lighter note I like this song; one of my grandmothers came here from Poland and the other came from Holland, and both my grandfathers came from Ireland :)
The melting pot refers to acceptance and assimilation to the country's customs and values not keep separate and don't assimilate to them . This is how acceptance come not from forcing another countries values or norms or laws onto this country.

I love this video, it represents a time when people recognized and appreciated the great blessing we have to live in such a free nation. No one said his country was founded by perfect people, but they laid the foundation for the freedoms we enjoy today--and which some take for granted. There is not a freer country in the world, and people from all nations have made America their home because of that simple fact.
My grandparents, Aunt and Uncle escaped Cuba in 1962(my dad was born in Miami Florida on that year). Thank God my family escaped that horror. Now I’m a 30 year old Texan and I love my home 🇺🇸.

@@theresahall6197 americas whole ideology was isolationism that didnt really change untill world war 2 its safe to say we never cared about anyone else and if we did its because caring brought us profit
Melting pot symbolism doesn't fit. It implies people can seemlessly blend together. I rather see America as a tossed salad. Everyone is different and unique but can come together
Well, people from different cultures and ethnicities do and did start families together, so their children inherit(ed) multiple cultures. So, like, even the average "white" American has ancestors from just about every part of Europe, even if they couldn't care less.
Consider the impact that the natives had on the USA’s industrialization, and greater growth. By the 1850s they were largely gone and sectioned off into forced regions. The indigenous tribes partly integrated into American society, but largely they live on their own lands with their own laws under our flag.
Of course, they leave out the part where they immigrate to America only to be faced with extensive discrimination and find themselves exploited for cheap labor making next to nothing. They also left out that one time in the 1930's when, for all their talk about freedom and equality, America (as well as Canada) refused to accept a boat full of refugees who were fleeing from Nazi occupation, forcing the ship to turn around and let them off in various parts of Europe, most of which were then taken over by the Nazis.
John Hitchcock yeah, I was thinking that! Just because they came over here, doesn't mean they didn't face discrimination (African Americans, polish people, Latinos, etc.) Not to mention, the English didn't discover America, the native Americans were here first, then the Spanish, THEN the French (Canada and parts of the northern US), and FINALLY the English!
I have French, German, Irish, Swedish and even a touch of Native American in my blood. I believe the French, German and Native American comes from my grandma's side of the family. And the Irish and Swedish from my grandpa's side of the family.
This song's music makes me cry with joy of seeing this from my childhood from 2000's till now. I'm proud to be a bowl of that soup from both sides of my familia.

My Genealogical ancestry My father's side: His father was African American with French Creole. His mother was African American with Acadian (Eastern French Canadian) and English. There are also genetic connections to Amerindians (USA,Canada,or both), but I don't know which side of the family it's coming from
My mother's side: My mother's ancestry is very mixed and diverse, and so I have to break it down. My maternal grandfather's paternal grandparents were immigrants from the Cape Verde Islands which were a Portuguese colony. They were of mixed Portuguese and SubSaharan African ancestry. My maternal grandfather's maternal grandmother's parents were immigrants from the Madeira Islands of Portugal. My maternal grandfather's maternal grandmother's paternal grandfather was from the Azores of Portugal. My maternal grandfather's maternal grandfather was an immigrant from Puerto Rico. He was of mixed Spanish,African, and Taino ancestry. I suspect that there was Sephardic Jewish ancestry in all the relatives that I mentioned.
My maternal grandmother was a bit of a Euro-mix. My maternal grandmother's father was the descendant of American Colonial lines from England,Germany (Prussia),Ireland,Scotland,Wales,Holland, and Switzerland. He also had a late 18th Century Scottish immigrant ancestor. There was also supposed to be some Cherokee Nation ancestors, but I don't know for sure. There are genetic connections to Quebecois French,Acadians, and Danes. My maternal grandmother's mother was Ashkenazi Jewish with a father from Romania and a mother from Riga,Latvia. There are some genetic connections to Eastern Europeans,Swedes, and Finns.
The Preamble to the US Constitution says: "for ourselves and OUR Posterity". If Asians founded a country, and then said "We claim this land for ourselves and our Posterity", they're not talking about Mexicans, or Africans, or Europeans; they're talking about Asians. Quote us where in the US constitution it says "We are a melting pot." Creating a brown mixture of this and that in ALL & ONLY White countries is genocide. Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White
Jeffrey Harris yeah, except the only difference is these people had to work hard and take care of themselves and be accepted into the country and earn their citizenship, immigration today is mostly illegal immigrants who come here for welfare and expect to be granted citizenship after breaking the law. Sorry, no one is entitled to an America citizenship.
I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG WHEN I WAS 7 AND DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF THE LYRICS NOW THAT IM AN ADULT I UNDERSTAND THAT WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF BEING AMERICAN BUT WE ARE SURROUNDED BY THE NUMEROUS CUSTOMS LANGUAGES AND TRADITIONS OF COURSE HAVING A BRITISH MOTHER I CAN APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT THIS COUNTRY THRIVES ON HOW WE ALL COME FROM SOMEWHERE 😂
Many teachers now are teaching that is actually a "mosaic" where we go together but are separate. I don't think this is true as many people now are a "mix" of different cultures and ethnicities but still live in under one nation.
I teach my sons mixing pot, because to melt us is to take away all the beautiful cultures that we all come from. God made us all equal, our differences is what makes us beautiful and shows how creative God is. Please don't melt us!! lol
I agree that we should accept all our cultures as we are a mix just like you said. But to melt is to combine everything to together to be as one. Like America, all cultures combine to be as one nation- together. You will never lose your beautiful culture that you are made of, as long as you remember where you come from whether or not it was good or bad. If it was good, then take pride. If it was bad you do not have to be the bad but arise from it and become someone full of honor and wisdom. Sorry that it is a little long. :) I am glad you are teaching your son that, many parents do not.
I’m Italian American, because I had ancestors who immigrated from 🇮🇹. It’s such a shame that they died. Lori Lieberman sings this song. I wrote a song called “The Half-Blooded Melting Pot” which talks about my made up good/evil half-blood witch character’s ancestry.
I'm sure that someone else has pointed this out, but why are there no dark skinned children or people in this animation? They made mention of Africans and other peoples with dark skin,. And you can't tell me that they didn't know how to make them with dark skin, when they clearly could have... So much for the Great American Melting Pot!!!!
It's about immigration, people who come here from somewhere else. At the time, most of the immigrants tended to be from Europe. We didn't have a lot of immigration from Africa back then. By today's standards of course, that wouldn't fly, but that was the thinking back then.

America was and is known as the land of hope and it was built because of imagrints.
millsermania yah and Donald Trump is making it worse
More like Settlers.

The original inhabitants were mostly dead.
My paternal grandmother came from Germany. Which makes me German American. So this has always been my favorite song in schoolhouse rock
We're doing Schoolhouse Rock Junior Live at my Junior High, and I'm Dori. This is my favorite song of the whole musical =-3
Where oh where has School House Rock gone When We Need Their calming Help.
well its simple they took one look at america today and said fuck no pack your bags were leaving
dear canibles
you can not eat the people in the melting pot! its not soup!
To serve man...its a cookbook!
+Bob Silver, love the Twilight Zone reference.
How Great to American and Something else as well. Powerful
The Preamble to the US Constitution says: "for ourselves and OUR Posterity".
If Asians founded a country, and then said "We claim this land for ourselves and our Posterity", they're not talking about Mexicans, or Africans, or Europeans; they're talking about Asians.
Quote us where in the US constitution it says "We are a melting pot."
Creating a brown mixture of this and that in ALL & ONLY White countries is genocide.
Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White
Yep. Letting people start a new and have potentially better lives is genocide.
They neglect to mention how the Irish were treated like shit when they came over. Not to mention how Africans were treated.
Perhaps we should forward this to the Trump campaign....
+Jeffrey Harris WTF???
+Jeffrey Harris Legal immigrants. still trump is a lousy republican and an even worse conservative
Trump
Johnson isn't a true Libertarian. since may, I've gone from Republican to Libertarian, and then from Libertarian to Tea Party
I love this song
This is just delightful :)
Our teacher showed us this song and we sing it all the time
I always liked this one, oddly, because my grandfather actually was from Italy lol
Damn, this song is so catchy.
:) I am glad you are teaching your son that, many parents do not.
im swedish, irish, german, african-american, chinese, and native-american. My ancestry is a melting pot
I helped the American melting pot 🇺🇦🇺🇸
I’m Italian American, because I had ancestors who immigrated from 🇮🇹. It’s such a shame that they died. Lori Lieberman sings this song. I wrote a song called “The Half-Blooded Melting Pot” which talks about my made up good/evil half-blood witch character’s ancestry.
Some Cherokees believe their ancestors are from the Seven Sisters star system. Say that 7 times quickly!
Best time for music... we've lost our way
love it
1977 was a good year
I'm sure that someone else has pointed this out, but why are there no dark skinned children or people in this animation? They made mention of Africans and other peoples with dark skin,. And you can't tell me that they didn't know how to make them with dark skin, when they clearly could have... So much for the Great American Melting Pot!!!!
It's about immigration, people who come here from somewhere else. At the time, most of the immigrants tended to be from Europe. We didn't have a lot of immigration from Africa back then. By today's standards of course, that wouldn't fly, but that was the thinking back then.
remember watching this on tv
My bloodline is 100% European. I have no native blood, and by that I mean I'm not Native American at all.
Imagine a Native american seeing this...
Attila the Fun you are I’m Native American and I’m surprised that there’s no Native Americans or black people
Attila the Fun you are and I am both sad and amazed
Well as a descendant of slaves, I'm pissed.

What are those other recipes listed on the book when it gets to he chorus when Lori sings “and the finest one she’s got is The Great American Melt, Ing, Pot!”?
The only other one I noticed was Ireland Stew
Totally agree. And not within a century. Only a few short decades. Scary and sad at the same time.
