just heard her stuff on radio6. wherever i am when its played I just have to sit down and stop and listen. it makes my brain do strange shapes.its not just the voice but the structure of the music, it makes me want to move in mysterious ways.
a j Carter was jogging when I heard it the first time and suddenly I started looking start ahead and it felt I was running towards something really strange like I could only stare at the horizon and everything else felt pale anf fading...
I can't believe that the male voice is actually Agnes' voice but pitched down. I was so enchanted with the voice! I was trying to search for the male singer!
i was just reading the comments hoping to confirm that suspicion, thanks, i've heard this song somewhere once and i knew because that voice is haunting
It is very impressive that she can do "both" voices. I thought there is a male vocalist, then I watched her live performances and saw it is only she, the cellist and the percussionist. They are also very talented..
About that Agnes Obel said "The chorus, it was sort of “secret singing,” like a ghost singing. And then I used this pitch shifter to make the voice sound ghostly. I also wanted something that sounded a little digital, because I feel a lot of our love life today is taking place in the internet - it’s digitalized, in a way. I thought it would be nice if it had this digitalized, electronic sound to the voice in the chorus".
She also uses male backup singers when available. Look at her video where she's live in Denmark. She has two male vocalists singing this part with her harmonizing.
Am I the only person who 's listening that song over and over again? I've just finished Dark right now and Agnes Obel is one of my favorite singer ever. By the way, I'm in 1986

1:33 to 2:00 lyrics: "And our love is a ghost that the others can't see It's a danger Every shade of us you fade down to keep Them in the dark on who we are (oh, what you do to me) Gonna be the death of me It's a danger 'Cause our love is a ghost that the others can't see (oh) " This describes Martha's and Jonas' love very well!!!!
Just read this after all this time (yeap still returning here because of Dark ) and literally gave me chills all over my body! Incredible to every detail
I think this describes most of the loves that the characters were living, they all were in different kind of pains. And I'm in pain for every one of them
I'm agree with you, the style change is brutal. Passages with the battery that did not exist does not fit with the style of music that we know. Piano, violin and bass are still there but to do it. Personally, I have a little trouble to hold on to this new genre.
You're right. The song is good, however, compared to her earlier work it is somehow not as outstanding. This awkward voice effect is just not her style. It seems to me as a weak attempt to use some elements of the modern pop music. Although, this is still better than most of those garbage pop songs.
Honestly, I'm not hearing elements from modern pop music being used in a negative way. It sounds like she's just altering her voice for dramatic effect. I wish more artists were as bold as to try those kinds of effects and really shift their sound. Most modern pop acts would be quivering to attempt anything like this, assuming they'd plummet down the charts. This is as refreshing as can be. For me, at least.
For years, I thought what a great Duet...then after over 5 years I had to realize it's everything sang by one person. What a great work with her voice.
it's digital conversion, nothing to be amazed about... love her thou, been on her concert recently, postponed four times because of the pandemic since early 2020 but it was worth the wait

I think this has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Along with Alison Goldfrapp your voice is only other to have actually brought tears to me eyes in just awe that such beautiful music can even be imagined let alone actually made. The vocal arrangement in that chorus is stunning. And what an incredible video to go with it. It reminded me of something Portishead or Massive Attack might have done back in the day. It looked like Sergio Leone's interpretation of 1984 or something, every frame could make a photograph. A beautiful piece of music, a stunning video, what a beautiful artistic statement all round. You are amazing, thank you for your music Agnes. Love from the UK. P.S: Loved your performance on BBC 6Music with Marc Riley a few weeks ago.

I just watched season 3 and ... I don’t know, it hit me empty with that end of the two and the rest of the knot turning to dust, I’m sad for a few weeks leave me alone world. I love you Dark.
I discovered Agnes years ago (2014), I am happy that some series finally use her songs, she's becomin more known ... but still , I think she deserves a lot more than this, a true classical artist
D A R K brought me here because the scene this song is attached to is so transcendent it almost makes me weep thinking about it! I honestly don't think there is another song that would be able to capture the tone as perfectly as this masterpiece!
As a metalhead, I can clearly say that I'm totally under the spell of the gently mysterious universe of Agnes Obel. What a prodigious lonely soul, she is !
This chorus makes me feel something that I don't know if it's a good or a bad feeling. I think it's an unknown but comfortable sadness, kind of reminding me that I don't know about the future but somehow it's... familiar. And I'll know how to deal with it. I don't even know a word to define this feeling (maybe there's not a word at all).
Comfortable sadness/loneliness. There's an exploration to it as well. Almost like moving house to somewhere you know nothing about, it's strange, & everything confuses you, but maybe you can make do with it? Similar to what you're saying, but there's definitely more to it
@@giovannalima6710 the description "of" is not fitting in own opinion. Its not happyness ABOUT sadness its more of feeling them at the same time Revisiting pleasant memories is often an occasin for it. The happiness combines with the sadness of the realization that those events gone by
After all this time it still casts a spell on you as strong as ever. Absolutely gorgeous track....dark and beautiful is not an easy thing to balance. This is one of those rare occasions when it is mastered. Definitely top shelf.
this song is so important to me. i was eight, riding in the car with my mother. we were sitting silently, it was the evening my dog got put down. something was off. my mom grabbed her phone and started playing a song. this song. we stayed silent. it gripped me hard, i don’t know why. i think about that often. whenever i hear this song it’s hard resisting crying. it’s so beautiful. i see faith, hope, sadness, despair, anger and pain in it. i’m curious about Agnes Obel. I’ve fallen under her gentle mysterious spell. everyone who is going through something hard right now, it’s okay. your not alone. it’s tough. there’s always someone to talk to. there’s always one person to listen, keep a secret and understand. find them. they might be across the world, or right next to you. just know your never alone.
I have been listening to this song for almost ten years now and I just got the story this song is about. She is such a powerful musician when it comes to evoking emotions just by voice, melody and words alone, that the meaning was completely lost to me until now. The song is about a love affair - two people who meet and fall in love and can't be together because of the lifes they lead. "Can you walk on the water if I, you and I? Or keep your eyes on the road and live in the familiar, without you and I" In the beginning of the song, she asks her lover if their love is possible. She compares it to walking on water, but she also references the lifes they both lead, wondering what's more impossible - to be together, or to carry on like it never happened. "For our love is a ghost that the others can't see, It's a danger Every shade of us you fade down to keep Them in the dark on who we are" This is a reference to their love threatening their usual lifes. Which is why I think it's about an affair. If people knew, it would destroy everything, so they got to stay quiet. "We took a walk to the summit at night, you and I To burn a hole in the old grip of the familiar, you and I And the dark was opening wide, do or die" This could mean a litteral walk at night, or it could be a reference to sleeping with each other. "To the summit at night", "to burn a hole" - the first one could be a more direct reference, while the second one references passion, that is yet again forbidden and thus not just burning but burning a hole into the every day life. Edit: "do or die" in this context references the impossibility of not taking these actions and the deep longing after each other. If we view the whole of the song though, it makes me think about the choice of title and the focus on the topic of the familiar. It feels like it's unclear to her herself if the feelings they have for each other arise from a longing for adventure and new, intense experiences to break out of the familiar or if it is something true and honest. It's hard to say if she thinks the familiar is something bad or good. If it is something that you get comfortable in, even though you shouldn't. Or if it's a good and baluable thing. And maybe it's neither. Maybe it's just a view on how time goes, always, turning something new into something familiar, making you wish for new things in a cyclical motion that we're doomed to repeat forever? Idk if my analysis makes sense to anyone but myself. However, to me, this seems very logical. :)
I love your analysis of the song. Well articulated. It’s now the only thing I hear when I listen to it. Thanks for sharing! Building on your interpretation, I like how the song at 1:18 builds as though you expect the chorus, offering some resolution to the build up, but instead goes back to the opening melody. Back to the familiar. It’s as though passions are high and instead of being able act on their love for one another, they are instead confronted with reality and the familiar. Then, while in this part of the song comes the chorus. As though the passion and longing for one another is breaking through the attempt to return to normal.
The vast majority of music I enjoy is black metal. Raw, full of unfiltered emotion, fueled by nothing but hate for the human condition. Then, there's also this. This song. It captured me ever since I watched Dark and I always come back to it. It's soothing, unnerving, sinister, numinous ... all at the same time. An incredible piece of art, Ms. Obel.
This is a true masterpiece! I am amazed of how all is in a perfect harmony in this song. Vocals, backing vocals, melody and the whole soundscape, strings, lyrics. The long string solo at the end with haunting piano in the very end nails it. Love it ❤
Can you walk on the water with I, you and I? "Because your blood's running cold" said the familiar, true to life Can you walk on the water with I, you and I? Or keep your eyes on the road and live there familiar, without you and I It glows with gates of gold, true to life [Chorus] And our love is a ghost that the others can't see It's a danger Every shade of us you fade down to keep Them in the dark on who we are (Oh what you do to me) Gonna be the death of me It's a danger Cause our love is a ghost that the others can't see [Verse 2] We took a walk to the summit at night, you and I To burn a hole in the old grip of the familiar, you and I And the dark was opening wide, do or die Under a mask of vermillion (a million) ruling eyes [Chorus] And our love is a ghost that the others can't see It's a danger Every shade of us you fade down to keep Them in the dark on who we are (Oh what you do to me) Gonna be the death of me It's danger Cause our love is a ghost that the others can't see

I thought it would be nice if it had this digitalized, electronic sound to the voice in the chorus".
She also uses male backup singers when available. Look at her video where she's live in Denmark. She has two male vocalists singing this part with her harmonizing.
Think they pitch her voice down for that effect. I thought it was a male singing too at first though. Love this song
Wow! Thanks actually. Never thought that "chorus" is also her.

This is really different from her usual style yet the moment you listen to It you know its Agnes Obel.
I love this :D
I'm agree with you, the style change is brutal. Passages with the battery that did not exist does not fit with the style of music that we know. Piano, violin and bass are still there but to do it.
Personally, I have a little trouble to hold on to this new genre.
You're right. The song is good, however, compared to her earlier work it is somehow not as outstanding. This awkward voice effect is just not her style. It seems to me as a weak attempt to use some elements of the modern pop music. Although, this is still better than most of those garbage pop songs.
Goosebumps 🌬🌾🍃 Love how haunting and subtle this entire composition is,
I wrote a poem Don't Stone Me by ninanile. Please check it out on my channel.
To me it sounds as if there were male voices - cool effect
For years, I thought what a great Duet...then after over 5 years I had to realize it's everything sang by one person. What a great work with her voice.

A beautiful piece of music, a stunning video, what a beautiful artistic statement all round. this song is so important to me. i was eight, riding in the car with my mother. we were sitting silently, it was the evening my dog got put down. something was off. my mom grabbed her phone and started playing a song. this song. we stayed silent. it gripped me hard, i don’t know why. i think about that often. whenever i hear this song it’s hard resisting crying. it’s so beautiful. i see faith, hope, sadness, despair, anger and pain in it. i’m curious about Agnes Obel. I’ve fallen under her gentle mysterious spell.

New to the dark series and i fell in love as soon as they played the song and now im just listening to it on loop
Or keep your eyes on the road and live in the familiar, without you and I"
In the beginning of the song, she asks her lover if their love is possible. She compares it to walking on water, but she also references the lifes they both lead, wondering what's more impossible - to be together, or to carry on like it never happened.
"For our love is a ghost that the others can't see,
It's a danger
Every shade of us you fade down to keep
Them in the dark on who we are"
This is a reference to their love threatening their usual lifes. Which is why I think it's about an affair. If people knew, it would destroy everything, so they got to stay quiet.
"We took a walk to the summit at night, you and I
To burn a hole in the old grip of the familiar, you and I
And the dark was opening wide, do or die"
This could mean a litteral walk at night, or it could be a reference to sleeping with each other.
She said it was about a secret. And that the whole album is about living lives while everyone is watching, digitally.
Yes. All of it. You see.
You found the key. And you see her brilliance.
I saw this in concert before Dark premiered. That said, I’m so glad that more folks are getting tuned into the beauty and talent that is Agnes.
