    For tracking with a cheaper tripod, put a strong elastic band around the handle and pull on that, rather than the handle itself.. really smooths out the movement.

    • @Lizlodude
      @Lizlodude 7 місяців тому +7

      Seconded. A proper tripod head is better, of course, but the rubber band trick is a great way to significantly improve the tripod you already have.

    VFX artist here,
    Technically you are attempting to manually linearize the color of log footage when you are adding contrast to the “low contrast” footage. The proper way to do this to get as close as possible to the exact color recorded by the camera onto your screen is by applying a transform function that goes from whatever colorspace/gamut the camera shot to whatever linear colorspace/gamut you want to edit it in (usually just sRGB/Rec.709).
    Basically, a log curve (or something piecewise like one) is used to map brightness and give small changes in dark values more importance than small changes in light values. In this way you “compress” the information by throwing away detail where our eyes perceive much less of it. Because the color no longer behaves as color would during numerical operations due to the fact it no longer directly represents accurate brightness in its “compressed” state, it has to be linearized again. Messing with the contrast is like manually trying to find the inverse function for the log curve, but if we know what colorspace the camera was using, we know the log function, and therefore should just have the computer apply the actual inverse function to restore the correct color values.
    I know, this is a very long explanation for what is essentially applying a LUT in two clicks. I don’t use Premiere, so I can’t speak to how you apply a display transform, but in Resolve you just apply an IDT to the clip in question.
    TL;DR - you can and should do the whole color correction step in the video in a few clicks by having the computer properly transform color from one space to another.

    The best thing for tilting drone shots is just to have a second camera op. DJI makes this available on their nicer platforms and, with some good deadband/acceleration tuning and practice, you can get really nice shots (even fast ones). It's definitely a jump in time, money, and number of friends you need, though.

    When I sometimes shoot timelapses of the northern lights with my phone I always have issues with autofocus if I forget to set it to manual. Luckily I can just set the focus to infinity and it matters even less than you shooting at rockets since the thing I'm shooting at is at infinity. I've flown a few rockets and stared when i was 12 or so years old. They were and are rubber band powered needles compared to the ones you all fly. You have mentioned a few times how the cameras mounted to the body can cause flight instability. Have you ever thought of mirrors or a prizm. That way, you'll stay inside the profile of the body but can get views out at whatever angle you would like. Love your station. It got back into fling a few of my very old needles! I wish you luck with your space shot!

    I met a friend of yours at the Maker Faire Orlando event this past November. I thought he was you at first (he wasn't at this table when I first showed up, but saw a lot of rockets that looked similar to yours). Unfortunately, I cannot recall his channel name at the moment and I can't find him in my subscriptions list (I did subscribe to his channel). He's also a rocket builder dude and had a lot of really cool stuff at the fair.
    Anyway, I would love to see a video with on-board cameras as a topic. I'm a fellow photographer, and I love learning new techniques and how-to's when it comes to getting great shots. Can't wait to see it!
