  • A guard of honor is formed at the Visitation monastery of Bourg-en-Bresse to pray in front of the Sacred Heart according to the wishes of Sister Marie du Sacré-Cœur Bernaud (1825-1903), nun of the Visitation, with intentions restorative. It is run by the Archconfraternity of the Sacré-Cœur. Mgr Labeuche, bishop of Belley from 1906 to 1910, decided to build a parish church in honor of the Sacred Heart in the new district of Bel-Air, according to the wish expressed by his predecessor Mgr Soubiranne. A first temporary chapel (which will constitute the north wing of the future church) is built by the architect Claude Royer and opened for worship in 1883 while awaiting the construction of the future church; it is designed according to the plans of the architect Claude Royer, based on drawings by the architect Franchet, in neo-Romanesque style with neo-Byzantine contributions. The parish was established in 1910 by Mgr Manier. The district then had five thousand inhabitants. The first stone was laid in 1911. The site being planned in stages, it was first the choir which had to be built. Canon Rynois, first parish priest, called on Mauméjean for the decoration of the two choir chapels, dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Joseph. This was carried out between 1939 and 1942. The Sacré-Cœur church was blessed and inaugurated for worship on June 14, 1942 under the Occupation by Mgr Maisonobe, bishop of Belley. It was consecrated on July 6, 1948 in front of a large crowd by Mgr Dubourg surrounded by bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Besançon. The bishop of Saint-Dié consecrated the side altar of the Blessed Virgin and the abbot of Notre-Dame-des-Dombes, that of Saint Marguerite-Marie. Today, the parish is run by the oblates of Saint Vincent de Paul. The neo-Romanesque style building with neo-Byzantine contributions measures 57 meters in length and 24 meters in width and the nave rises to 8.72 meters. A rose window 5 meters in diameter illuminates the facade. The tympanum is decorated with mosaics showing on a golden background the figure of Christ in bust and dressed in a white tunic showing his Sacred Heart with open arms. The reinforced concrete spiers, measuring fifty meters high, were only raised in 1952-1953, thanks to a bequest. The interior is neo-Romanesque. The white marble high altar decorated with statuettes dates from 1825, it is the former altar of the major seminary of Belley. The stained glass windows of the Mauméjean workshops, exceptional in their intensity and luminosity, date from 1935-1939. We also discover a Crucifixion by the Lyon artist Jean Scohy (1824-1897) and a fresco by Luc Barbier and François Croizat.
