Though I think this is an overpay, the faceoff circle is indeed an underrated part of this deal. He definitely gives us more lineup flexibility as well. We can run three good centers or move Petey to the wing, or back up with the Lotto line when we need an offensive boost. Lots of options now.
A right handed Dman that was among the OHL scoring leaders is absolutely a top prospect. If had put up these numbers last year he would have been a legit first round pick. As for not making the junior team for the US, you need to be aware of the politics at play. As a guy that left the USNTDP for the CHL, he was persona non grata.
Keep in mind though, HB is not the first Draft+1 player to get good numbers and then go on to never play in the NHL. Even with those numbers he couldn't make the junior squad. His skating is not good.
@@Xanucks I just explained why he didn't make the junior team, and it certainly wasn't because he wasn't good enough. Nor did they have a shortage of offensive dmen on that team.
@@Statsy10 yet somehow hes still ranked lower than willander. His comparison by most scouts is Klingberg. Who happens to be a plug on a leafs team with no defensive depth. Hes a C prospect at best.
I dont know why everyone is so upset about losing draft picks here. 1: you have to pay to get 2: the prospect pool has like 5-6 players that can crack a roster spot in a year or 2. Losing one year of a less then steller draft class is fine
I was on the fence myself, it was actually an unrelated article I was reading this morning that changed my mind. That being, Allvin was talking about how much more players were interested to sign as free agents with the Canucks to play for Tocchet. If you can reliable sign depth pieces in free agency because your organization has a reputation, you can very much afford to sell some prospect depth. Good trade.
With modern scouting, your odds of getting something great with a late first round pick are really low. Most likely a 3rd or 4th rounder who will be ready in 4 years time.
if they land tanev the 2 trades will have the same impact that the ronning, courtnall, mommesso trade had on the 90-91 canucks team. hope they pull it off. exciting times to be a canuck fan again.
That to me is still the greatest Canuck trade ever. Sure the trade Burke made at the draft was great for getting the Sedins, but they took years to really improve this team. Getting Ronning, Courtnall and Mommesso just before the playoffs instantly changed this team for the better. It was a night and day difference and it made watching Canucks games so much more exciting.
It’s honestly the best I’ve ever seen as a Canucks fan. Realistically I expect Lindholm to play with Pettersson but if the choose to run four lines equally 5v5 and split those two it should work very well.
I really like Kuzmenko, but even I think this was a good move. I hope he fits in as well as Zadorov! Best of luck to Kuzy, I am sure we will see him fill our net soon!
Hunter chose to leave the US development program after just a year to go to the OHL. I think they felt he snubbed them and chose to snub him in the world juniors for abandoning the program. I don't think it was necessarily due to his lack of talent.
This was a great trade. It is beneficial to our chances for sure. But.... Dear Calgary, Please take care of Kuzzy. He will be a very effective player in a run and gun team. He'll be a 30-goal scorer in the NHL again. A Canucks Fan
Donnie made a great point about the Canucks not losing a playoff roster player when they parted with Kuzmenko. Unfortunately for Kuz, he has been a defensive liability this year for the team, and really would not be given much ice time come playoff time, if at all. So while I do hope to see Kuz rebound and re-discover his confidence in Calgary, he is not a fit for the current plan of the Canucks. The team is clearly going for it now, so it is a worthy gamble to make. I am glad the team did not take the bait on Chris Tanev. As much I as respect the fearless style he plays, I think his lack of foot speed and his injury history together make him not a worthwhile trade target, especially if the Flames are asking for a first rounder for his service. I do think the Canucks may need one more piece at the back end, but with the current group playing the way it has been playing all year, this player would be more to add security and maybe give a slight upgrade to a Juulsen, Cole, or Myers. Definitely not worth a high draft pick or a strong prospect to obtain.
Short term, we'll see if it was worth it after the playoffs. Lindholm is a UFA at the end of this season and will want money and term. Long term, giving up a 1st for a potential rental is rough, and who knows what the other 2 prospects and the potential 4th will be. I guess it's a passable trade, but this is exactly what got Benning in trouble - depleting the prospect pool and trading away picks, high end ones, like the Canucks were the Colorado Rockies. I'd love to be wrong, but now the Canucks have to prove it on the ice - not just in the regular season, but in the playoffs. The problem with these types of trades is that if you win a championship, nobody cares what you gave up to do it. But if you don't, you've left yourself with nothing going forward except a bunch of unmovable, overpaid, older players who aren't producing like they used to. Resigning Lindholm, who appears to already be on the decline, to a long term contract could be a worse move than letting him go for nothing. But we'll see. We thought a certain winger from Dallas would be good for the Sedins. That didn't work either.
I'm not concerned with that. Hughes, Demko and Miller are proof players are willing to leave pie for others. There's no reason to believe Rutherford and Allvin wont be able to convince him too. Lindholm was drafted by Rutherford after all.
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think Allvin would have paid so high a price without some assurance from the player/agent that there was some sort of understanding ballpark for price & term. Otherwise, it's throwing away the future for a short-term rental, which would be dumb. There is behind the scenes stuff ... maybe they spoke in Swedish. 😅
Demko at 5x2, Hughes at 7.85x3 and Miller at 8x6 are proof players here are willing to leave money. I could definitely see them and Hronek taking discounts.
Hunter Brzustewicz does not have a better chance of making this team than Willander or Pettersson, he was expendable. We have Hughes...Hunter is an undersized powerplay, offensive specialist - he was never gonna get minutes IF he even made the team. He did not even make his world junior team.
The reason he didn't make the WJ team is more because of Team USA politics. He left the USNDT because he was lowered on their lineup after an injury and wouldn't get to play much. He was only left of Team USA because of that - nothing to do with talent which he has tons of. End of the day, he's a great player we probably will never need.
I have been a fan of Tanev since his early days as a Canuck. His issue is he is always injured. That was the issue when he walked away from the Canucks. It's fine to make an effort to get him back, but if the Flames want a first rounder for him...get the f*** out of here. A 34 year old, often injured D man on an expiring contract and the Flames want a 1st for him? Let them keep him til the end of the season, and get nothing for him. A 1st rounder for him is outrageous.
If they end up putting Lindholm and Petey on a line then I hope it is Petey who they put at center and Lindholm on wing, instead of vice versa like most have people predicting.
I feel much better about this trade after watching this vid. You guys brought up 2 very good points. 1st one being Kuzy, how he probably wasn't even gonna play in the big games or at best, he wasn't gonna see the 3rd period if the Canucks are up. Hate to say it, but it's true. 2nd point on Hunter. How we have Hughes here and as long as Quinn is here, Hunter will never be on the first unit PP. Both very good points.
Players are wanting to be traded to Vancouver. Tanev said he loved Vancouver & even have property there still. Who doesn't want a shot at winning the cup?
Unless I’m much mistaken the Canucks aren’t accruing any cap space because they’re using LTIR to remain under the cap now, and have been all season. Without further trades the space they have now (~$1.86m) is the exact same space they’ll have at the deadline. Tanev has a $4.5m cap hit, and effectively for the Canucks that remains the case even as the season goes on. If we want him to come back we have to ship out nearly $3m of contracts one way or another. [apologies if you’re fully aware of this already but I get that not everyone will be fully up on the bewildering world of cap management!]

Sure, unless the picks/prospects don’t amount to anything at the NHL level. I personally love the flexibility Lindholm brings to the forward group in a year the team is unlikely to match again any time soon. The D on this team isn't that bad honestly. The top 4 are just as good as any other contending team in the NHL. We have arguably the best top pair in the NHL.
It’s a reach. Assuming Garland isn’t an option you’re looking at one of Mikheyev, Myers, Zadorov, Soucy or Cole to make it work, right? Say what you like about any of them but they’re all currently playing a noticeable role for the Canucks. More so than Kuzmenko was at the very least.
I know you’re probably talking about Brzustewicz, but if you’re actually referring to Tanev that might be more accurate. The team has been genuinely very very good this year, that’s rarer than a kid excelling in Junior.
Lots of assets, not lots of quality. The pick on average has a 5% chance to produce a 100 game nhler. HB has horrible skating. Kuzy is not good defensively, and having Slothberdeau as his C isn't going to help him. At least he fits in with the no accoutability route Calgary is building towards.
If the Canucks can trade a very late first round pick for a Cale Makar clone they’re idiots for not doing so, idiots I say! Be real, Tanev is still a reliable top 4 right side defenceman. It was never trash in Vancouver and hasn’t been in Calgary either.
@@joshm9363 tanev would be on the second pair only when foote and tocchet jumble the pairings up or if we get injuries. He’s a depth piece at this point in the game. 3rd pair up and down for injuries. Juulsen is better than tanev right now. I love tanev but that’s a fact.
Next Move should be dishing Zadorov to Toronto (50% retained) for Ryan Reaves and a 2024 1st rd pick. Use this 1st rd pick as a chip to get Chris Tanev. Reaves can be buried in the minors.
Or just not? They’re trying to win now, surely Zadorov offers them more right now for that purpose than crappy Reaves and something like the 18th choice of 17/18 year old kids?

If he asks for $8 or $9 million per year on his next contract and the Canucks don't re-sign him, then it was a terrible trade.
And as soon as you trade for Tanev he gets hurt and misses significant time or is lost for the season.
I really liked Kuzzy. Kid looks like he has a great personality. Ya wish him well.
He seemed to do better with Boudreau. When Tocchet came in he never seemed the same. A change is probably best for Kuzy and the Canucks
Good trade for team sweden. Shit I mean canucks
more like Team USA
Yeah only 3 players that actually play from Sweden on the roster dummy
@@mikebaxter247you’re right but can we carry on pretending otherwise 😂🤫
Where is the evidence that they tried to get Tanev?
Dhali is beating Tanev's drum ;)
We need to get rid of dead weight Myers heavily
But they gave up on a defence men who they needed
I know you’re probably talking about Brzustewicz, but if you’re actually referring to Tanev that might be more accurate.
The team has been genuinely very very good this year, that’s rarer than a kid excelling in Junior.
Stockholm Canucks
Only if Lindholm re-signs at a reasonable cost is this a deal, otherwise it's a disgusting overpayment for a rental
Terrible take
How much you betting the Canucks to win the cup now? I hope at least 5K. I don't like Canadians having money@@bigamigo4863
Glad you're not the GM!
They gave away quantity not quality
Both Petey and Hronek need extensions. Now there's more money so it's easier to sign them. Unless you are saying you want to lose Petey?
Over paid for a UFA
Lots of assets, not lots of quality. The pick on average has a 5% chance to produce a 100 game nhler. HB has horrible skating. Kuzy is not good defensively, and having Slothberdeau as his C isn't going to help him. At least he fits in with the no accoutability route Calgary is building towards.
late 1st pick...worth it
Tanev is trash. You talk about him like he is Cale Makar its laughable. Always injured.
Has he always been injured with the Flames? Not sure he has been
If the Canucks can trade a very late first round pick for a Cale Makar clone they’re idiots for not doing so, idiots I say!
Canucks fan coming out of the chinese homes they rent.
Reeves is trash
They paid way to much
Donnie nailed it Tocchet is at fault! Get rid of Tocchet..he's Toxic!
Ricky beating his drums. Horrible! Horrible!
This trade sux bring back Bruce there it is!
I like Lindholm, but that was a LOT to give up for him. It would be fine if he wasn't on an expiring contract. If he asks for $8 or $9 million per year on his next contract and the Canucks don't re-sign him, then it was a terrible trade. Giving up all of that for a rental would be as bad a deal as I have seen a Canucks GM make. If they re-sign him at a reasonable price, then my opinion would change.
if you win the cup and are unable to resign him it's also a great trade.
There is not a chance that lindholm commands 8 million next season. He will get 5x3 if anything. He’s 29 and his offence has taken a dip.
I heard he will be asking for 9 mil next year. Canucks won't resign him. Was a truly stupid trade
@@danquast1914 i dunno who told you that, but they don’t know what they’re talking about. Still, if he thinks he can earn 9 million, i’d be happy to reap the benfits of that.
@@mrcrpcrp20 If they actually won a cup then any and all criticisms by me are null and void. If they don't win a cup, and they don't re-sign him, then they gave away a TON for a rental.
