Just got this working myself; don't be like me and miss the fact that BOTH M8 MIDI out -> LP MIDI in AND LP MIDI out -> M8 MIDI in are required! So two 3.5mm stereo cables going between the devices to make the control surface thing work. Thanks Stephen, only needed to rewatch your video about 3 times looking at your setup to realise my mistake. 😂
Boy, if Tim/the community could get those arrow buttons on the LPP working on the M8, that would be amazing. They could be used in almost any context on the M8, from navigating the project menu to controlling the cursor in the arrangement view, effectively scrolling around like with the M8’s directional buttons. Are there two spare buttons on the LPP that could be used as Option and Edit buttons, too? This is why I dream of an M8 in a larger, tablet sized form factor. I’ve got a Model 02 on order, but I’d definitely buy a Polyend-sized version of the M8. That might be ultimate to me. Easier to see, more tactile, still portable, but with the M8’s workflow, sampler, synths, and effects.
The bookmarks help a lot with finding your position on the two displays! since they come up as differently coloured on the launchpad as well. I am a huge bookmark user so theyre already all over my tracks for orientation haha
@@StephenMcLeod a good use case for bookmarks w/the Launchpad setup would be to add a bookmark on every 9th row, so you could use them to locate yourself more effectively when scrolling up/down on the Launchpad 😉
@@StephenMcLeod I bookmark whenever a section changes significantly. I'll bookmark the parts that change but leave the blank phrases. This generally ends up with clearly marked rows which helps a lot with navigation on the tiny screen, and then if theres a switch up of say just one part mid-section I can clearly see where that is. I use this technique in every track, its as second nature to me as using FE for blank phrases, and I feel instantly overwhelmed when I see a M8 project without them hahah
Great video, can't wait to try this out! Have you tried using your MIDI fighter with the LPP at the same time? Would be great to have both pads and encoders for jamming live! :D
Thanks! I haven't tried that yet... though it's on my list. I've been tempted by something like the SC4 for the faders etc... but there's no MIDI feedback which would mean I would need to re-do most of my tracks, and I can't face it yet ha.
Oh riiiight, yeah the midi feedback is a thing hey… thanks for the heads up on that too! I’ve just been doing some very rudimentary testing with a Launch Control XL which is cool, but need to get deeper in to the midi implementation charts / programming with the feedback stuff, if possible etc. 😃
Great Video, thanks for sharing. I am considering getting an M8 ver2, but also thinking of getting a Nerdseq for my eurorack, haven't decided which to get yet. I do have a Tracker mini that I use out by the pool and for travel and I do enjoy the tracker workflow. so many choices....not enough money to buy them all...LOL! Oh BTW...I love your glasses! Those a very cool! Cheers, Bill
Both the M8 and NerdSEQ are awesome. M8 is obviously the portable option - whereas NerdSeq is the ultimate Euro sequencer - so it really depends what you are after!
I’ve been wishing there was an option to have live mode keep looping until you manually advance it so you don’t have to put blank rows. With this new feature I feel like it’s even more needed, would love to see it added when this firmware is released.
You mean where it would only play a specific row until advanced manually? I have to say I wouldn't personally use that, as that would mean you couldn't chain sections together - though curious if you have a different perspective.
I've been using the korg nanokontrol 2 for parameter twiddling on the M8, i bet it would fit neatly below the launchpad. I also have almost no reason to get the model 02, but... Yeah it's on its way.
Good question. I can't think of a definitive way that it would work for sure without a MIDI filter/device in the middle. It might be worth asking in the Dirtywave M8 discord as they have the brainz.
@@StephenMcLeod I did, but no sigar so far ;), i've got an rk006 but cant seem to get the filters setup the right way... guess ill just start both m8's at the same time :P seems to work, sort off
You need to make sure the Launchpad is on the latest firmware. Do the lights on the Launchpad light up or change when you enable the connection? Do you have the MIDI IN and OUT cables connected correctly? Are they TRS?
As far as I am aware it only works as stock with the newest LaunchPad (which is also fairly old now relatively) due to the MIDI TRS in/out, but also the particular config. I know folks have been working away at hacking it with other devices though.
I'm not too bothered about that since it's designed for the LP3 which has minijack MIDI - and it's better to power controllers like this externally anyway. It's still just in beta though so who knows what'll happen in future.

I guess, if it could be a lot easier to navigate with the ability to assign spicific colors to blocks/row
Yeah that'd be a great idea, though apparently the bookmark feature helps with that as well.
thx, I actually own mini tracker and the launch pad x, I believe it s called

Does this only work with the newer LP pro?
I don't think so because those don't have MIDI in and MIDI out jacks - it's just USB.
