Bro, thanks for the video. We had a forest fire near our house last year, and I've been patiently waiting for the snows to melt so we can go searching during our hikes.
Went hunting morels for the first time this Mothers Day with 5 of my g-kids. I had never gone before, but it was on my bucket list to do. I'll be 70 this summer, and so was so excited to check this one off my list. We had a major fire behind our home last Aug. so I knew that this year would be a good time to go hunting. We were so happy to find them, but I sure wish I would've seen your very informative video first! Now when I go out I will know how to harvest them correctly. Thank-you so much :)
This the best morel video I have seen, and I have seen many. A fellow fisher falling in love with hunting mushrooms. I have not yet hunted for these morels but I was wandering if morel season is over in the sierras. Eastern and Southern Sierras. Thx
@@spiltmilt do you have any social media pages I could follow you for more info and maybe ask questions about burns I’m curious how long morels will return to burn areas
Just went out today with a buddy to find morels. I had never done it. Went fishing first then hunted for mushrooms. Found quite a few. Sautéed them when I got home and they are delicious. Funny how I went for my first time today and your video came out when I got back. Thanks for sharing! Always informative
I've seem morels near tulip and maple trees in Pennsylvania, and near Douglas Fir trees hear in B.C. Thanks for the tip about Onyx, sadly it's no good for Canada.
I'll never forget my first morel....it was a free cap, wearing a beech leaf like a hat! I spotted the white stem first. East coast, NE, inland NY. (Just last May!) Since I"m a newbie, can you tell me how likely we are to find burn morels in our part of the country? (central NYS, Finger Lakes. We've just had a woods fire that raced from lake level right up a steep hill through the woods. I'm guessing about 50-100 acres maybe? You're very informative, that you for sharing your knowledge!
sadly not really, I just got like one bite, but a week before that I went fishing at wapato lake pond and my friend(the other person) caught a 5.33-pound bass and I caught a 4.72-pound bass, it was my second bass in my life that I caught and it was huge, I just got into fishing! lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YiwM3bTKdxo/XryOax1MoiI/AAAAAAAAB-A/FaN3xORxvmMExKuvYIQUk3RM-RcO50YywCK8BGAsYHg/s0/2020-05-13.jpg
How many years after a fire do they tend to continue to fruit? I recently moved to Wenatchee from out East and still learning about the fire morels. I know there have been some larger burns the past few years, but don't know if they will still be producing this Spring. Thanks!
Have you noticed any trends with burn severity? Went to a burn near me and the fire looked severe. Almost no living trees, tons of canopy scorch and no morels. I’m sure it could have been too early where I went but I am curious about burn severity. I noticed the burn you are harvesting in this video looks like a low severity or moderate severity burn.
I’m in Stevenson Washington the Gorge I have yet to come across any… I know to look in sprint and have looked in the burn areas a little bit years ago and gave up. Suggestions on a good time to go and look also if you know any areas?
Hi, we are located in the Redding area, no permit needed in whiskytown area and the carr fire was 1.5 years ago, is that lake a good mushroom hunting area?
Hey there! I live in the Bellevue Area and i just recently got a burn map and was going to go scouting and look at a few burn sites! Have you been out morel foraging yet?
I went out around may 15 by Winthrop wa. The area looked great but didn’t find any. It was about 75*, do you think it was to dry? I’m use to hunting the verpa mushrooms in western Washington and it so wet when looking for them. So I’m not sure if it’s to dry in eastern Washington. Thanks
Hi my name is David and we were hoping you might know where to look for morel mushrooms in Arizona we just went to West fork but I think it's a little too early it's still snow on the ground and a little colder than was expecting just starting out looking for them need some tips.
Have you ever gone burn morel hunting in Utah? Looking for tips. I wonder if your tree mix you listed (willows, cottonwoods, poplars, dogwood) holds true for the Intermountain West. (Utah/Idaho). In our higher elevations we pretty much have mixed conifer forests (douglas fir, spruce, aspen, birch)
Well the one u say is poisonous is one of my fav. Also called a calf brain. So i dont know why u say it is poisonous. Cuz its a mushroom that tastes great.
You may be thinking of gyromitra Montana, or the snowbank morel. Known to be delicious after a quick cook. Gyromitra esculenta is the toxic false morel that requires more care when cooking
I know a person who eats false morels in Maine. He cooks them for a long time. I’m not going to try them. I did tell them about the toxic chemical used for jet fuel. I think the post fire burn will be just as good for the eastern part of the US. Now my ? about the fires is what burned wood is best to search. ? In northern Maine the soil composition or something is at fault because I never see any. Why? Someone else beats me to it maybe? It’s possible. Also look in wild apple tree locations with groupings of wild apple trees but never find anything? Soil looks so rich too. So it sounds like forest fires mainly of coniferous is a poor location? Is this true or false? Is their perhaps a ratio of coniferous to deciduous trees for better morel yields? Plus a huge forest fire of say 10 square miles sounds like a much better location. Wow 200 morels per acre!! Damn I need to go out west!! So 640 acres is a square mile I thought? I’ve found the larger sized yellow morels. So do both yellow morel varieties also grow after a forest fire or do all types of morels? I reside in Maine and go to other states on the east coast too.

It was definitely late morel hunting in this area of Wisconsin. Jeezus! Glad you got a super score! I only got about 18, but I was ok with that.
Dude, thank you! I’m from Boise and I’m wanting to get into motel hunting, but it’s all so hush-hush

Very informative, you seem to well versed in forrest ecology!! These foraging videos are awesome!
I took a full year of mycology when working on my graduate degree.

I was out of worms, I catch more fish with worms
Clark county Arkansas
I know where some burn areas are. Most of them are pine and oak mix.
Should morels be in a two year old burn in Arkansas??
Yes. Look around those oaks especially.
Thanks for the info great video
To help propagate, bring water and wash them in the woods your pick them, and dump the water out in those woods... The water carries spores...

They generally fruit best in the first two years after a fire and then it declines rapidly after that
@@spiltmilt thanks for the quick reply!
Live in Kirkland - are there any good spots around I90 corridor for Morels?
The 2017 burn north of Cle Elum might be worth a shot

Definitely extremely hot fires almost certainly impact the mycorrhiza in a negative way

Are you still giving info on morels do you have any social media pages to follow ??
Hi, we are located in the Redding area, no permit needed in whiskytown area and the carr fire was 1.5 years ago, is that lake a good mushroom hunting area?
Should be given all the fires in that area.
Wow thats pretty cool. 👍👍how often do you drop videos?
2 a week
I’m wondering where they are in northern az?what trees to look for
Did you get all this info from the USDA managing morel forests in Western US manual? Sounds like that is what you have been reading!!
No I took a full year graduate course in mycology at WSU.
I live in the Puget sound area, when do you usauL find your first morels? I’m itching to go out
Starting now on the west slope of Cascades in the lower elevations < 1,500'.
@@spiltmilt how do you tell which slope is west from east facing?

CAN YOU 'CRUSH' THEM WHEN THEY ARE FRESH AND TOSS THEM BACK ON THE GROUND SO THEY WILL GROW NEXT YEAR?
Your knowledge on wildlife and fungi is impressive. What do you do for work? Are you a biologist?
I graduated with a degree in ecology and in graduate school studied mycology.

Any idea where I might find fire morels around Kamloops BC
No

Not sure but I know there were plenty of fires down there this year east of Phoenix. I'd start there.
Thank for the idea 💡
Any recommendations for Oregon Morels?
Should be good hunting in any of the numerous burns from last year
based on this it seems like you are not looking where trees were actively burnt. Is that accurate? Or were there burnt trees near by?
They were burnt but it was low intensity fire.
What would you say is a good time in eastern Colorado?
It really depends on your elevation and the year but generally May or early June is peak.
How much does it cost a pound in the supermarket?
Anywhere from $25 to $40 a pound depending on the market.

Aspens and birch would be a safer bet than Doug firs and spruce.

Like I said in the video some people do eat them and if prepared properly are not a threat.
