Gavotte en Rondeau, BWV 1006, Voice Flute

The gavotte from the "Partita 3" for violin, BWV 1006, originally in E major; perhaps Bach's best known work, after the "Badinerie".
The "voice flute" is a recorder in D, between the alto and the tenor. It is not known where the name comes from, so all hypotheses are possible, except the one that says that the sound resembles a human voice.
Museums are full of "voice flutes", but strange enough original compositions are extremely rare.
This instrument combines (almost) the agility of the alto recorder with (almost) the deeper, richer sound of the tenor, and is therefore an excellent compromise.
Another great advantage : as it is in D, it can be used for a large part of the traverso repertoire ! A small disadvantage: the distance between the fingerholes of the right hand is a little wide, which limits its use to not very virtuoso scores, or to players with a large right hand.
In any case, if one is lucky enough to have a good voice flute (and a large right hand) it is difficult to pick up the alto recorder, the sound being so seductive...

La gavotte de la "Partita 3" pour violon, BWV 1006, originalement en mi majeur ; peut-être l'oeuvre la plus connue de Bach, après la "Badinerie".
La "flûte de voix" est une flûte à bec en ré, entre l'alto et la ténor. On ne sait pas d'où vient le nom, donc toutes les hypothèses sont possibles, sauf celle qui dit que le son ressemble à une voix humaine. Les musées regorgent de "flûtes de voix", mais, étonnamment, les compositions originales pour sont extrêmement rares.
Cet instrument combine (presque) l'agilité de l'alto et (presque) la sonorité plus grave et plus riche de la ténor, et est donc un excellent compromis.
Un autre grand avantage : comme elle est en ré elle permet de s'approprier une grande partie du répertoire pour traverso ! Un petit désavantage : l'écartement des doigts de la main droite est un peu grand, ce qui limite son utilisation aux partitions pas très virtuoses, ou aux personnes avec une grande main droite.
En tous cas, si on a le bonheur de disposer d'une bonne flûte de voix (et d'une grande main droite) il est difficile de reprendre l'alto, le timbre étant tellement séduisant ...
