Flight of the navigator is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. The beat, the vocal performance, and the spoken word at the beginning. Probably the greatest keep cut of all time
because the internet is an entire multimedia world donald created. in interviews, he had the same outfit and deadpan expressions and tendencies as the main character from the companion script. the reason there’s so many skits throughout the track list is because each song matches up with a selection of scenes from the screenplay. the album is a grower, for sure. the instrumentals are deep, distorted and varied and his bars are funny yet existentially depressing in certain cases. definitely recommend reading the screenplay alongside another listen and watching his short film “clapping for the wrong reasons” to get the full because the internet experience
@@courtvisions2 forreal I remember when it dropped and I tried reading along with the screenplay while listening. I also loved that the leaked and official versions had different mixes
Oh this finna be a good one. Buckle your seatbelts kids. We are about to embark on a journey in which Donald Glover predicts the future in many ways.. Because The Internet.
The reason he stops the songs in the middle is because this album is more like a movie. He wrote a screenplay to go with it. So whenever theres an interlude or a stoppage in the middle of the track it's supposed to progress the underlying story of the boy.
The Party was him actually sharing his disdain for the party atmosphere which is why it was so distorted and also why he screamed "gtfo" at the end. The tracks right after are like some ego death type stuff. This whole album was released with a screenplay and a short movie that adds more depth to the whole thing.
The album also has a screen play that goes along with it. For instance when the jazz part kicks in on worldstar he walks into a jazz bar, or when they repeat worldstar chant he sees a fight. Also stuff like he mentions a spider in a song and then the character sees a spider, etc. Pretty cool
Production wise there still has been anything else to come out even close to this. This album is decades ahead of its time and it's social commentary has only been elevated to a different level with how well it predicted the importance/power that the internet would inevitably attain. In all honesty, a first listen nowadays might even be more coherent now that it's had almost a decade to breathe. This is gonna be a great watch... welcome to Donald Glover's Magnum Opus... Because the Internet
Anybody can walk into any denys with a gun that they 3d printed and finish it, henasen said if you gonna miss heaven why do it by 2 inches. Some of my fav bars of all time
Whatup Doug, if you ever get the chance to buy the vinyl, it comes with the Screenplay that is meant to be read in conjunction with the album to get the full experience. The goal of this album was to be a soundtrack to a movie script Donald Glover wrote.
Just found this video but you can tell by the way this dude reviews these songs that he understands music as a set of notes and words but doesn't quite grasp meaning at all. Hell he said 3005 was a feel good anthem, lmao what? How? It's a depressing look at the inevitability of loneliness and loss and the video compounds that further.

Thanks for mentioning the screenplay, my fav part about the album is that it is listenable in many dimensions. It’s nutty

The best comment for context, that’s why this album means so much (to me)

But yeah I’d highly recommend watching some good youtube Reviews/Breakdowns and reading some of the making. Concept was crazy
PLEASE PLEASE react to GAMBINO'S latest album "3.15.20". It's personally my favorite
Great album imo
You need to read the screenplay too
