I do not come into contact with many beardsmen in my everyday journeys. However, I recognize the down nod as a sign of respect. Truth be told, if I were to nod, I'd probably up nod as a "'sup" gesture. It's more of my personality.
I do not nod. I usually make eye contact point to my beard point then point to their beard and then a thumbs up. Many great conversations have started that way with the first question usually being ….how long have you been growing yours? The beard community is great and that is why I love this channel!
Gotta respect the beard. If I don't know you, it's a slight nod down saying "I see you, I respect you". IF I know you, I'm more excited to see YOU and the beard and its a nod up usually by a big hug!!!!!
I picked up the downward nod from my father as a greeting/acknowledgement. No beard or anything else involved. Maybe connected to recognizing something well done, but I can no longer say for sure. Maybe, simply, a compliment. Somewhere, I recently came across a statement that an upward nod was for people you know. When Sport Cars/Imports were becoming a thing, waving to other drivers of the same make/marque was “welcome to the club”.
I’m from Pennsylvania and it’s pop, stuffing, buggy and fountain👍. I usually head nod up to acknowledge anything. Whether it’s to say “what’s up” or “nice beard” just because it just feels more natural to me
Haven't responded much, been very busy this time of year. I absolutely love this viseo, I do the nod down, it feels more repectful to me for some reason. Appreciate you Dan.
I grew a beard cause it’s fun cleaning it up, shaping it up, putting oils and butters in it, combing it, washing it growing a beard taught me something I’ve never had… PATIENCE 🤣 and if you have nothing to do grow a beard trust me you’ll have PLENTY to do 🤣 I don’t have the best beard I don’t have coverage under my lip but I have a soul patch sometimes I get upset cause my beard isn’t the best beard but a beard is a beard, grow what you can work with it rock it & be confident 😎🤘if you’re ever upset with your facial hair just remember there’s guys out there who can’t grow anything at all and I guarantee you they would be happy to have what you have, so grow whatever you can work with it and rock it 😎👍🤘 Great video as always Dan! 🤘😎🦁
I feel in New York City, a nod tends to be used as a silent greeting, and if someone were to try to give me a beard nod, it would potentially feel out of place. Part of the mentality is to keep to one's self, either to avoid weirdos (like the time someone complimented my beard only to ask for money,) or potential conflict.
I Definitely appreciate the beard nod, it’s always been down that I’ve noticed lol. generally speaking though there’s a lot of purposeful Beards here in East Tennessee so we give the nod out frequently, but I’ll give the nod out to a great mustache too a lot of guys go between both styles so an appreciative nod to a purposeful mustache is definitely reciprocated.
That’s interesting! I’m originally from az, grew up on a ranch, out of the city… he wore hats, we tipped our hats head down , hat up slightly. Apparently, there’s regional pickets, regionally! 🙃 to be fair, this was when I was “100” or so years younger! 🤪 Great vid Dan! Enjoyed the “walk” down ye old memory lane!
I speak up and tell them nice beard. That’s generally happens to me. I get more vocal appreciation than the simple nod. And that’s how I treat other bearded greatness
Definitely down for me bud! This would be a good poll on your community page I'm really curious! Up feels more aggressive to me. Definitely gives me the "you wanna go?" Vibe, unless it's a friend.
for me, down is more of a general acknowledgement whereas the up seems designated to those I am familiar with or I have a higher base level of respect for so a regular stranger would get a down but a bearded stranger might get an up
I usually get props from the beardless community...it's hard being an Icon. Otherwise, if I am acknowledging someone/something, I nod up. ARIZONA REP'N!
Beard nod up if said beard is smaller than mine, Beard nod down if it's bigger than mine. Up signifies respect for the beard journey we all go though, Down signifies more of a "I bow to show that magnificent mane the proper respect it deserves" Hahahaha Regardless though, I ALWAYS show respect for my bearded brethren! And I absolutely love you all! Happy Merry whatever it may be that you & yours are celebrating during the Winter Solstice!
Never really thought of which one lol I’ll have to say I Nod down but I’ll have to keep an eye on it . I always acknowledge good bad ass beards and let people know what’s up lol .
I don’t do a lot of nods but when I do it’s usually up. Philly area guy so it’s most certainly regional. I find I get a lot of “nice beard” or “great beard” comments to which I turn to my wife and give her the “you hear that” look followed by an eye roll from her.
This reminds me of "A Christmas Story" triple dog dare scene "The exact exchange and nuance of phrase in this ritual is very important." Lol That being said, I nod down. Nod up is too familiar for a stranger.
Dan, Great video! Personally, I’m not a big fan of the nod. I prefer to initiate a friendly compliment. However, when/if I DO nod, it’s completely dependent on the recipient and the initial look I get from them. I can’t group it into an age thing. But sometimes it’s up and sometimes it’s down (in the same geographic area). JB.
Nod down, for beard respect. The nod up is more or a general "hey, what's up". Just don't hold that nod up too long or you could look a little snooty! Like your better than they are and your looking down at them.
this is hillarrrrrioussss well... as a black man to another when in the middle of absolute no where its always a nod up like a "heyyyyy thought i was the only one im here too :')" so i do the same for everything cool beard cool truck cool shoes nod upwards
Always down. And regardless, there's always some kind of notice. I can be across a room and me and another guy with a well maintained beard will typically notice each other. Lol
Hey Dan if I’m work outside in the cold and snow this winter would you recommend a balaclava or something to keep warm and protect the beard or is the wind and snow not that huge of a factor for beard health? And would the balaclava affect the appearance or health of my beard when I stop wearing it?
Interesting! I've never thought about it, but I definitely would give a down nod to unfamiliar beardsmen. Interestingly enough, I would likely give an up nod to someone I know as a more personable greeting ☺️ Interesting wallet Dan, does the button ever get pushed in your pocket and eject your cards into your pocket?
Question for Dan and anyone else. Working in the wind, is there a recommended tie or band? Not quite long enough to tie. But looking for a small band or ring
@DanCBearded I know it depends on the length of beard .. but please give me a general idea if I keep 7-8 inches of beard how much quantity will be required.. I think beard oil will be required in 3 litres.. beard balm - 3-4 kilograms. What do you say 🤔
I have Tourette syndrome and, should you see me nod up, it’s purely a motor tic. I’m fairly antisocial and - contrary son of a gun that I am - avoid making eye contact with beards and their owners when I’m out and about. 😂
NY NY I hear again how life is so different in middle America. No nods in any way at all. That is seriously too 'intimate' for here! One either directly comments or there is no sign of notice. Rare, good comments do happen. I do catch some looks from women and some guys and no clue if they are antibeard people You learn by being on bus/ subway rides, sitting 5 -6 ft. opposite, face to face, for a moments or a long while and doing best to not look/ look away without using a phone. Or rush hour rides when it may be too crowded to be able to raise your arm in order to wipe dripping nose. Though NY economy, declined, return to work not all happened and peak crowds are somewhat less.
Neither. My beard is for me. Just like my tattoos, I do not want to acknowledge other's and I definitely do not want to talk about either of our beards or tattoos.
Get a 2 in one by starting your head in the middle, goin up, and nodding down. Only drawback is it takes a half minute to perform and you look like a Muppet
Middle Tennessee here with a nod down. I agree with you, chin up seems aggressive. Btw the difference between stuffing and dressing is that stuffing goes inside the turkey.
That’s the origin, but it has transformed beyond that is absolutely regionally based slang as well now. We actually did a poll on that on my Monday livestream. Some good real time data
📌 All of my links: linktr.ee/dancbearded
"it's alright to be kind, it's alright to be nice" was my favorite part. Also, beard nod down. 🤝
I appreciate that Ken!
I usually nod down. Always happy to see fellow beardsman.
Same! I used to be uncomfortable with the acknowledgment, but now I try to go out of my way
I do not come into contact with many beardsmen in my everyday journeys. However, I recognize the down nod as a sign of respect. Truth be told, if I were to nod, I'd probably up nod as a "'sup" gesture. It's more of my personality.
I like that! So much of it is tied to personality
Beard nod down to older gentlemen and nod up for the younger bros
Agreed!
Agreed!
Agreed

Up if you know them, down if you don’t
I do not nod. I usually make eye contact point to my beard point then point to their beard and then a thumbs up. if I go first, it's usually "down." if they go first, I'll reciprocate with the same nod they give me.
Love that approach! I bet I subconsciously do the same

I think the upward being more familiar is naturally correct and I never really thought about that before the comments. Love it!
I’m from Pennsylvania and it’s pop, stuffing, buggy and fountain👍. I usually head nod up to acknowledge anything. Whether it’s to say “what’s up” or “nice beard” just because it just feels more natural to me
Loveee PA slang!
Definitely a nod down for the fellow beardsmen. Up nod is reserved for friends and more of a “sup” than an acknowledgment of the beard.
Makes total sense!
Pre-beard, my understanding was that a head nod up was a statement of dominance, while down is either saying you are on an equal level or submissive.
I am on the same page
I always enjoy seeing a solid beard while i'm out. I typically go with the down nod.
Same same!
Haven't responded much, been very busy this time of year. I absolutely love this viseo, I do the nod down, it feels more repectful to me for some reason. Appreciate you Dan.
The best time of the year! Keep making a difference Tom 🤝

Great video as always Dan! 🤘😎🦁
That is so true! I’ve learned so much about patience because of my beard.
Always nod down to strangers, nod up if you recognize them. I’m in south eastern Indiana and that’s a very common practice with all nodding
That makes a lot of sense and an angle I didnt think of!
Such an interesting aspect of big cities!

I often do the same, but many situations it doesn’t seem like my best route
My nod is definitely up. don't really do it for beards but I definitely notice a nice beard !
That makes sense! It's a nice acknowledgement.
As someone in Wisconsin, always the nod down 😄
MIDWEST BOYS!
It’s funny you mention that, most times it’s “Down”.
Nice!
Definitely down for me bud! This would be a good poll on your community page I'm really curious!
Up feels more aggressive to me. Definitely gives me the "you wanna go?" Vibe, unless it's a friend.
The Canadian way!
Nod down, definitely!

for me, down is more of a general acknowledgement whereas the up seems designated to those I am familiar with or I have a higher base level of respect for
so a regular stranger would get a down but a bearded stranger might get an up
That’s a very good point! I do see that
Never did a beard nod because I recently found out about it in another video on this channel. My feeling says: I'm a 'nod down' guy.^^
Give it a shot!
I always do my beard nod down, I've seen some do their beard nods up. But all in all bearded brothers unite.
Heck yeah!
Only head nods down in my area, up nod is a direct challenge where im from.
I could see that!
My usual nod to anybody, whether they have a beard or not is "down", unless it's a friend of mine.
That seems to be the most common
I usually get props from the beardless community...it's hard being an Icon. Otherwise, if I am acknowledging someone/something, I nod up. ARIZONA REP'N!
haha you are the best
My rule for head nods is nodding up if I know them nodding down if I don't. So a beard nod would be down for me because of that
That seems to be the most common!
I do the up nod.
Nice!
I'm about 30 minute south of you and I've never seen a beard nod up or down. I've had people say they like it but never a nod.
I bet you will now that it’s on your mind!
Beard nod up if said beard is smaller than mine, Beard nod down if it's bigger than mine. Never really thought of which one lol I’ll have to say I Nod down but I’ll have to keep an eye on it . I always acknowledge good bad ass beards and let people know what’s up lol .
Exactly! Have to
I’ve not personally experienced the beard nod as of yet but I also don’t know anybody who’s growing a beard either so I’m a lone wolf in all aspects
It will come! Keep us posted
I don’t do a lot of nods but when I do it’s usually up. Philly area guy so it’s most certainly regional. I find I get a lot of “nice beard” or “great beard” comments to which I turn to my wife and give her the “you hear that” look followed by an eye roll from her.
Haha know that look too well
I live in upstate NY and I always nod up.
Oh interesting!
Up.
Thanks!
I nod up most of the time........kind of like a tip of the hat.
Makes sense!
This reminds me of "A Christmas Story" triple dog dare scene "The exact exchange and nuance of phrase in this ritual is very important." Lol That being said, I nod down. Nod up is too familiar for a stranger.
Oh I love that reference! Good call

Exactly!
Up for myself. Up seems the most common here in West TN.
Super interesting!

Down for sure...I feel like up can be taken differently here in Albuquerque 😂
Haha for sure
I usually just tell them. Hey, nice beard brother.
I often do the same
Always done the nod up. But I can see how it could be taken aggressive.
And there's "hose pipe" and "garden hose".
Hose pipe!? Where is it at?
Up
🤝
Nod down. A lot of times I’ll give it a great beard. 🍻🍻🍻
Same! Or even a point lol
I have never seen a nod up before today.
I bet you will now that it’s in your mind!
Weird take. But it depends where I am and how I’m dressed. If I’m dressed nice it’s down. If I’m in my casual clothes head up.
I actually entirely get that!
Always down. And regardless, there's always some kind of notice. I can be across a room and me and another guy with a well maintained beard will typically notice each other. Lol
I've noticed that too! It's like a special connection. I will make a beard stroking motion too lol
Nod is up down here
Thanks!
Maybe age has something to do with it, but, nod down just comes naturally to me... I'm 50 next year lol!
I think it could be age as well!
Hey Dan if I’m work outside in the cold and snow this winter would you recommend a balaclava or something to keep warm and protect the beard or is the wind and snow not that huge of a factor for beard health? Nope! Has never happened to me at least
Good morning....beard nod down.
Morning, brotha!
I do not down.🎉😂❤
🤝
Question for Dan and anyone else. Working in the wind, is there a recommended tie or band? Not quite long enough to tie. But looking for a small band or ring
I like the brand "Goody" for hair ties
Beard nod is down for me. The head nod up is for friends and family!
Totally can see that!
@DanCBearded - yeah, I see you have the same standpoint, more or less!
Always down! 👊🏻👍🏻
🤝
Always down be it beard or not, up only if i know somebody and it makes sense. doing up randomly seems cocky
Totally get it
From Ontario Canada and I would do the down beard nod.
Howdy neighbor!
Instinctively if I don’t know you I nod down if I do know you Nod up. I think I read somewhere it’s a physiological thing.
That totally makes sense. We are such interesting creatures
Nod down to the old-school
🤝
Always beard nod down for me
Partner 🤝
my typical nod is down
Classic!
Anyone can nod. I usually just do a simple beard stroke and most guys see it and do it back. Just something to make a brother grin
That is something a goat would do. Checks out!
Always down nod bro! From and to me😂
And me to you 🤝
How much quantity of beard oil and beard balm should i make at home which lasts for whole one year??
Truly different for everyone. There is no set answer there
@DanCBearded I know it depends on the length of beard .. but please give me a general idea if I keep 7-8 inches of beard how much quantity will be required.. I think beard oil will be required in 3 litres.. beard balm - 3-4 kilograms. What do you say 🤔
@arjunsharma5343 best guess would be 24 ounces of oil. Idk with balm, I don’t use it
@@DanCBearded okay

I tell them nice beard
That is great!
Can't you do this as a poll?
Yup! Likely will in the future, but that has to be on a community post with text. I needed to explain first
Never done it but if I did it would be down 😂
Try it!
Here in south jersey is up for anything either beard or just say wasup
I can see that!
Pittsburgh pa nod up
Interesting!
I've never nodded upwards in my life, and I honestly see it as kinda trashy. Probably just because of who I've seen do it.
Thanks for sharing! Love hearing all the different views
Never cared about it. I usually don't pay others much attention in my everyday life.
Thanks for sharing!
Down for me
🤝
Nod up, but have yet to receive a nod in return 🤔
But maybe mine is not long enough after 4 months
Try the down!
No but when I see a woman with a guy without a beard I got to call the DR
