Since everyone's asking for Yamaha- the current Yamaha 678 model SURPRISED me when trying. It's got power and depth! A great step up intermediate flute for the price.
Our school recently got new instruments, and we got new Altus flutes all with a Z cut. Before they came in I went to a flute convention at a nearby university where they had the same model of flute our school was receiving. I had been playing on my Yamaha 462 for about 6 months by then, and after I picked up the Altus I felt like my sound was immediately better. I loved the Altus and couldn’t wait for ours to arrive. A few months later they arrived and I was extremely excited to check mine out. I took it out of the case and set up immediately, and it was not what I expected. I then came back to this video and remembered that there are different headjoint cuts, and I beat myself up because I didn’t see why cut the flute I tried at the convention was. I feel like with the Z cut I have to hold back a lot, especially in the beginning. I don’t know if it’s because I’m coming from a Yamaha, but I feel like the Z cut holds me back and I can’t put as much air into it.
I have an Altus 1107 and I play on the Z cut. In all honesty, I didn't enjoy the regular Z cut but when I got the gold riser added on, it was amazing. The sound was tremendously different. I would recommend trying their headjoints with different riser options.
I currently play the flute you just reviewed (but I got mine directly from Japan b/c they offer a closed hole/c-foot version for people like me with bum right shoulders and arthritis in my hands--light and easier to hold) and it came with a C-cut headjoint. I had a hard time with it for the reasons you listed above (plus I've got some nerve damage in my face, so scrunching up my air stream is incredibly difficult to do these days), so I got a Z-cut and stars above, what a difference its made. I've play-tested a lot of flutes and you're right, my 907 chose me. I love, love, love my Altus.
I bought a Di Zhao through Flute Centers of NY and they definitely know this sweet lady. They do have goodies you will appreciate because of her. I was very satisfied with her and Flute centers.
Hi, Joanna. I had an Azumi Z3 flute that I had to part with. I think that its Z cut headjoint was mostly responsible for the balanced, beautiful, sound I could get from it. Unfortunately I could not manage a flute with a B foot-joint because it made the longer flute weird in my right hand (I have been playing flutes with a C Foot-joint for so many years...) and I couldn't see any advantage in having a low B available at the expense of having to deal with an additional "pinky" key. In Europe one can get an AZ3 with a C foot-joint. Not in the US. So I had to settle for a Yamaha 462, which has a C foot-joint but which has a sound that does not impress me as much as the AZ3. I am currently waiting for a Di Zhao D700 with a C foot-joint which I have ordered from Flutastic.
you sound beautiful with the V cut... i love the color and texture you have produce with it.. also i notice the z cut sounds higher than the c and v... it has a shinobue like high notes.
I'm a HUGE fan of Altus Flutes. I like that their pro models have the d-sharp roller standard. It would nice to include the that roller on all of their flutes. Also something flutists should know about their flutes in their artist series have steel springs whereas their professional series have sp-1 spring which have multiple metals including platinum. Overall, fine flutes. There are a couple of the artists play who play on 807 models (silver plated body and mechanical with silver lip plate and riser).
That one seems close to my Pearl. She was a $3,000 flute that I got (after sale price, coupons, and loyalty discounts) for $1100. I have no idea what cut head joint she has though...I had no idea there were different cuts. I was taught to work with whatever came with the flute, now I have to look it up and see if the specs say what it is...*checks specs online...* Nope, just says sterling silver head joint.
Many flutes only come with one headjoint, so that's not a surprise at all, haha! I myself am looking/saving up for a headjoint for my own professional flute. When it comes to professional flutes, many flutists will use a headjoint from an entirely different brand from their flute's body! ;)
JustAnotherFlutist For what I do, what it came with is perfect. I don't ever plan to play with a symphony or a "professional" orchestra. I probably wouldn't have spent what I did but I couldn't pass up the sweat deal I got. Did the same for my piccolo, almost half price after sale, coupon codes, and the company gave me a loyalty discount since I buy from them all the time.
I think the C sounded the most consistent but maybe more generic? Z seemed a little rough, V wasn't as smooth as the C but maybe more interesting dynamics. Maybe C for classical and V for jazz would work.
I have a Pearl. Have had it 4 years and I love it. It's very similar to the Altus in this video, but cost less. Don't know what cut the head joint is, that wasn't listed in the specs when I bought it.
FarfalleAlfredo I got a Pearl Quantz this year as well and I'm in love! But I wished to know more about the others like the Elegante and the Dolce or even the Vigore. I don't have to way to try them because here in Portugal It's very complicated :(
Would you consider doing a review of the Yamaha 500/600/700 series flutes? I was in need of a new flute recently but was on a fairly restrictive budget (around $3000) and the Yamaha 577 really impressed me! Even though it only has a solid silver headjoint, it performed far better than many all silver flutes I tried and I'm curious what your opinion might be.
I'm definitely more of a z-cut player! and I totally agree with you! I have a pearl 765 and it came with their classic cut. But my air capacity grew and it couldn't handle it, so I got a Dana Sheridan headjoint, and it's very similar to the z-cut, and the difference was AMAZING. I didn't have to hold back and its so much more freeblowing than anything and I love it! (it also has a 14k gold riser which makes it even more better for me). I do want a new flute though...pearls can get a bit clunky in their mechanisms after 6 years even with proper maintenance. Well, at least in comparison to muramatsus or Brannens
Great review. You really hit all the nuances of each headjoint. Altus makes a beautiful flute. Thanks, love your views....You make them interesting and informative.
I currently play on the Altus 1107 with the V-cut head joint.. For me, I prefer the v cut head joint but for you, I think that you sounded the best in the Classic cut head joint.
Awesome! So helpful to hear the 3 different headjoint cuts and your take on them. I am on the hunt for an upgrade flute and am looking for a Miyazawa. (review request!! 202, 402 & 602 please!) But I've gotten to try Altus a few times and like those too, I was smitten with the Zcut and the big juicy sound. Thanks!
The V headjoint seemed clearly the most richly resonant and musical. It just jumped out in quality vs the C headjoint. The C joint seemed to make the instrument sound thinner in tone. The Z headjoint seemed great on the lower and mid-range notes but lost some integrity in the highest. To me then, the selection would be V headjoint. Something in the physics of it just seems like it's giving the air column everything it needs to generate as much quality and balanced out tone as possible, across all octaves. Thanks for the demo!
Hi! I play on a Pearl 765 from the Quantz series with a V cut headjoint. I used to play on a C cut beforehand and now I feel like I’m out of breath and the lower notes require quite... an effort. Should I just practice on it and see what happends or is it not compatible with me?
Hey, Joanna! I have a pearl 665 intermediate flute solid silver head joint silver plated body keys and foot joint and I was wondering if you could review Pearls high end flutes maybe maesta silver or gold as in the future I hope to get a flute like that :) Thanks.
I just had a thought...review some flutes on the uber-cheap end...like the ones you can get on Amazon for less than $100. I hear so many people say they want one of those because of the price, and they don't believe they get what they pay for (as I've heard that repair shops won't even touch those). I think it would save people a LOT of heartache and money if there's a review on the uber-cheap knock off flutes. I've seen the brands listed as Glory or Mendini. (For fun, one of the clarinet players in my band bought a red Medini clarinet...it fell apart during the second parade it was used in).
Hahaha, I have DEFINITELY thought of doing this, but FCNY will also DEFINITELY NOT carry these kinds of flutes, haha! I have heard of the Glory and Mendini, but never anything good about them 😆
HI!!!!!!! I am going to perform with my new orchestra for the first time tomorrow and I'm so STRESSED!!!! Our conducter is really scary and she doesn't really like me..... Two of my best friends aren't coming (violinist) and (french horn player) My other best friend playes percussion, and LUCKILY she will be there. I also have a few teachers I'm very close with that are playing. (Violinist, percussionist, trombone player, french horn player and cellist). But even though I have so many great people supporting me, I steel feel hella nervous. I think it's because I practiced with my orchestra ONCE, all the other practices were canceled. Next year in June, we are going to be touring Europe and I'm really excited! If you have any advice on becoming "at home" in your new orchestra or traveling alone or nerves, can you please help me!?!?!?!?!?!?!BTW I love you and your videos!!
Oh man, that's a great topic to cover. For now, I'll say that it takes time. This is only your first concert, so it will take time for you to adjust to everyone and for everyone to adjust to you. It will take a number of concerts before you and your colleagues are warmed up to each other, and you guys will naturally start chatting and things won't feel so uptight. :) You got this!
Hi! I was wondering if you could try flutes such as: Powell Handmade Custom 10K, a Powell Custom 14K Headjoint, Powell Handmade Conservatory Silver, Muramatsu Handmade Model DS when you got the chance. For piccolos could you possibly try, Resona by Burkart, Hammig Piccolo Model 650/3?

My co-section leader bought one through her teacher who is a dealer. I was impressed by her sound and intonation (she's a phenomenal player, but some flute scales make the eb, e, f, and f# difficult) but her new flute instantly rectified it I really was impressed, but I felt it wasn't a good fit for me. I also paid $1500 for my Haynes new (it was a very lucky opportunity because it was a special edition and it was being introduced at the time and people who try my instrument are shocked) she Paid 3 times that price and it wasn't solid silver so I felt it wasn't a good deal, but that's my interpretation. She found her voice and that's what mattered
You certainly know your flute playing! Wow, tremendous. However, you're always playing brand new great instruments. I wish you'd try an old Armstrong/Gemeinhardt/Artley/Artley Wilkins/Bundy in comparison as well as some of the wildly cheap Chinese flutes.
You're welcome!! My pleasure. There are WAY more than just these 3 cuts--these are just 3 particular cuts made from Altus. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different headjoints out there!!
JustAnotherFlutist thank you very much by the way I haven't seen you do any of the Emerson or Powell flute before, could you please do a review about them? ( I am using emerson ef8b now
Hey, Joanna. Have you ever thought of going back to school to get your doctorates? Is it a wise decision to do so, and how would that be able to help someone's musical career if they do decide to get a doctorate degree? Thanks! I love your videos!
So I just tried like 15 flutes from my private lesson teacher and there was this one called Sedona flute and it sounded so good on me and I wanted to ask if you knew what brand that is.
21pianochris YES! First I would recommend using the link in the description instead of searching for it and realize it IS the holiday season. everything will have some sort of discount!
21pianochris it is definitely legit. it's the best place to get flutes in the NY area. I got my flute there, and almost everyone I know who has a professional flute did too! :)
Mostly the metals, cuts, whether it's handmade, etc. Really excited to keep showing you guys more flutes so you get a better idea of how this all works!
It's _difficult_ to get into a music school on a student flute, simply because a student flute will most likely not be able to execute technique and tone with the kind of polished quality you need to enter music school!
Can you please review some yamaha flutes? Perhaps some 400 series flutes? Cause Yamaha has the best 'non-handmade' intermediate flutes...according to some people (^_^) and I wanna understand why. Thank you XD
My flute teacher recommended Altus flute. I do not think their flutes are beginner flutes, they sound better than most of the other brand of professional flutes. With that it comes with a price, their 907 model cost as much as a professional flute for brands such as Yamaha. Only recommended for those who are serious into flute and willing to invest. If you aren't playing to make a living I think the cheaper beginner models from Yamaha is better.
Altus is not a beginner flute.. their professional artist grade and they are all handmade.. they have student to intermediate flute in azumi brand, azumi has machine made body and hand made lip plate. a solid silver flute of azumi is still cheaper than the cheapest silver plated altus flute. handmade flutes are really expensive.. but worth it since altus 807 silver plated sounded better than an azumi AZ3 solid silver.
In my opinion C-cut sounded best on you (round and full). V Cut is just bully and shrill (on you) and the Z-Cut just doesn't please me. Well the Z-Cut is the typical american cut...
Haha, I was actually filling out the C-cut way too much. The V-cut probably sounds a little shrill because I maxed out the volume on my microphone. I'm still working on upgrading my equipment slowly! :)
Since everyone's asking for Yamaha- the current Yamaha 678 model SURPRISED me when trying. It's got power and depth! A great step up intermediate flute for the price.
Aly Smith I tried out a 577 and I was SHOCKED. Ugh. If only I had money for it
Our school recently got new instruments, and we got new Altus flutes all with a Z cut. SO drooling over Altus flutes! I have a Z cut headjoint that I put on my OLD handmade Pearl and love it (for now) lol
I have an Altus 1107 and I play on the Z cut. In all honesty, I didn't enjoy the regular Z cut but when I got the gold riser added on, it was amazing. The sound was tremendously different. I would recommend trying their headjoints with different riser options.

I love the Z cut!! I've played all 3 (briefly on trial) but I played Z cut for a few years, still love it
Hurray, found a Z-cut player!! All 3 headjoints are so lovely, and I'm SO glad Altus gave such a great range of cuts to fit all flutists!
Csn you hold a note longer with a C cut than the Z cut (that I have)?
Great review, once again! I have an Altus 907 with the C cut - love this flute.
It's awesome!! :D And thanks!
I bought a Di Zhao through Flute Centers of NY and they definitely know this sweet lady. They do have goodies you will appreciate because of her. I was very satisfied with her and Flute centers.
Andy M What were the goodies?
Excellent review ! Totally agree with you on the relevance of the split E.
I'm curious as to what the Gemeinhardt Generation Professional Flutes sound like. I also would like to see you trial some wood flutes!
I realize I am kinda randomly asking but do anybody know a good website to watch newly released movies online?
@Archie Milo Flixportal =)
@Christopher Onyx Thanks, I signed up and it seems to work =) I appreciate it!!
@Archie Milo no problem :D
I love the Z cut head joint!
that cleaning rod is a work of art
I am going to try out more flutes next week so I'm excited for that !!

Yay reviews!! Please do some piccolo reviews and maybe some Pearl flutes as well ^_^
Added to the list! The next one WILL be a piccolo review! We were just getting everything prepared and organized for it! :D
JustAnotherFlutist thank you so much! ^_^

Are you still looking for a Miyazawa? I have one made in Japan most similar to the 402 with 9k lip and riser if you're interested
Hi Ms. Justanotherflutist, please please include Azumi 3 in your upcoming review 🙏🙏🙏
And Trevor James Virtuoso please 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
my favorite is V cut~!
The height of the keys away from the holes or close to the holes is called the ACTION. Can the action be adjusted by a Tech? The C sounded the nicest.
I was wondering if you could review Miyazawa flutes? Or some upper level yamahas (500 or 600)
PICCOLOS ARRIVING SOON YAY!!

JustAnotherFlutist I highly doubted they would, you'd have to actually buy a cheapo to review one.
My teacher is recommending I get a Miyazawa flute. Can you review a couple of theirs please?!
I'll give you a review. They're shit. Done.

Can you do a review on the azumi az1? Please and thank you!
I'm guessing this is an intermediate model flute? OML ITS SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING
Hi! I was wondering if you could try flutes such as: Powell Handmade Custom 10K, a Powell Custom 14K Headjoint, Powell Handmade Conservatory Silver, Muramatsu Handmade Model DS when you got the chance.
For piccolos could you possibly try, Resona by Burkart, Hammig Piccolo Model 650/3?
yay! love It! I also play an Altus, but a 1007. I love it so much!
Awesome! Altus flutes are beautiful!
Do you also get to try out all three head joints? I've only ever played a C cut model so I have no idea what it would be like to play with the other two.
Z cut sounded best on you to me. Thanks
Can you please review a muramatsu flute??👏
this is great.. really love your videos...
3rs
Thanks!! And you guys are amazing! ;D
So we can use different model headjoints on different flute brands for example, an Altus headjoint on an Amadaeus flute?
Hey Joanna! Love your videos. Could you do a review on the Resona Flutes please =)
Thank you , love your videos ( I didn't know that there are three different cuts at all
You're welcome!! My pleasure. There are WAY more than just these 3 cuts--these are just 3 particular cuts made from Altus. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different headjoints out there!!
JustAnotherFlutist wow!that is a lot for me to learn
No worries, just learn as we go with these reviews! It's been my dream to be able to show you guys how this all works!
JustAnotherFlutist thank you very much by the way I haven't seen you do any of the Emerson or Powell flute before, could you please do a review about them? ( I am using emerson ef8b now
Adding them to my list! ;)
I loved this video! Can you please do a review of the Yamaha 600/700 series flutes. They changed to a new model.
Do you have any tips on learning large leaps? I love the way you play them, but I cannot myself. Thanks.
You sounded best on the C cut, but the V cut was also quite nice with more present overtones. The Z cut was a little much
What do you mean by a “little much”?
@@oscarrh8005 a bit on the bright side, which I could phrased better
Did you go to the 2016 flute festival? Cuz it would be great to see another flute festival vlog 🙂
Can you maybe review the Powell Conservatory Aurumite and the Burakrt 998
burkart*
Both added to the list! I have a friend who plays the Aurumite--it's a gorgeous flute!
JustAnotherFlutist yay !! I play on a Powell Conservatory Aurumite!!
THAT'S AWESOME!! :D
Hm, never heard of that one. Better add it to the list! :D
Can you tell me something about the forza silver head joint for my pearl 665 quanz vigore.
can you review the geminhardt 3OSHB
Amazing video I'm getting a new b foot flute using your code 😀😀!!!!!!
That's awesome!!! Thank you so much! Which brand/model are you getting? :D
Can you also do a video on Trevor James flutes/piccolo. your videos are amazing btw
Added to the list! And thank you so much!!
sigh, wish I had that kind of flute.
Cosmic Mavis.V ikr like I got a $40 flute from amazon 😂
Is FCNY a reliable website? Cause it seems pretty scetchy looking at the prices and that everything is discounted

C head joint?
I think the first try you used the z cut headcount.
the v head joint is definitely higher and brighter
I need to get me a v-cut head joint
what's the difference between a student flute a intermediate flute and a pro flute?
Mostly the metals, cuts, whether it's handmade, etc. Really excited to keep showing you guys more flutes so you get a better idea of how this all works!
JustAnotherFlutist ohhh,So can you get into music school with a student flute or it's a requirement that you have a intermediate or higher flute?
It's _difficult_ to get into a music school on a student flute, simply because a student flute will most likely not be able to execute technique and tone with the kind of polished quality you need to enter music school!
V cut!
Can you please review some yamaha flutes? Perhaps some 400 series flutes? Cause Yamaha has the best 'non-handmade' intermediate flutes...according to some people (^_^) and I wanna understand why. Thank you XD
Added to the list!! And I just want to say that I absolutely love your genuine curiosity. Makes my heart feel warm and fuzzy!
That makes my day ^_^ Thank you XD Love your videos
Hmm I have a C cut and probably should have a z cut!
Yamaha model 587
Added to list!
go to taiwan yahoo the price is a lot cheaper but only c foot
I bought mine at Music All In in the Netherlands. Way way cheaper for my Azumi Z1E with Z cut.
I have a soft pot for Yamaha products 😜
Haha! My first flute was a Yamaha ^_^
I might buy it but the retail price is 4,000
I know it's hard to believe, but this is actually a wonderful price for a Japanese handmade flute!
Oh Niels I may have not commented early enough *cri* that breaks the streak of Joanna replying to meh *cri*
R.I.P headphone users...
I play clarinet
LOOOOL 1:26 Broke musician
But I'm hoping the person who owns it will lower the price I'm praying they will.
Can you adopt me? jk, but I love the reviews. You're my new mom.
LOL!!! I mean... we are a little music nerdy family here. ;)
Lol, ok mom
😘😘
In my opinion C-cut sounded best on you (round and full). V Cut is just bully and shrill (on you) and the Z-Cut just doesn't please me. Well the Z-Cut is the typical american cut...
Haha, I was actually filling out the C-cut way too much. The V-cut probably sounds a little shrill because I maxed out the volume on my microphone. I'm still working on upgrading my equipment slowly! :)
second!!
😂
c
in the third octave the sound is terrible !!!! fletan for 2500 euros should play much better !!
