On rewatching, I am really impressed by how often Kit Connor has managed to perfectly nail Nick's facial expressions from the graphic novels - no mean feat with such simple line drawings to go on - but also make it look completely natural. I think the whole cast is excellent but this detail really stood out to me the second time around.
There were a couple of scenes where to me this is especially obvious one is the scene at Harry's party when Charlie tells Nick he bumped into Ben, Nick actually looked both jealous and worried that Charlie and Ben might be back together and then the look of relief when Charlie tells Nick what happened, the other is when Charlie's Mum points out he is still in his pajamas and Nick so obviously checks him out and likes what he sees, and the final one for me that impressed me was how hurt Nick looked when Charlie said Nick was not his type at the Cinema even though he knew Charlie was saying this to protect their relationship you could tell from Nick's facial expression he was still hurt to hear that out load.
I think what makes this such a faithful translation from page to screen is that the graphic novel format is basically a storyboard similar to what filmmakers use to plot out a show. And I think the characters and environments that Alice created through their drawings were pretty grounded in reality, so the set designers for the show were able to include these style elements to truely reflect who each of the characters are. We know who these characters are not just from how they are described physically and mentally, but also by the thought Alice put into their room design. I think it’s brilliant

I think that if you read "Solitaire" you won't feel sorry for Ben...seriously. I understand he suffers with discovering himself and stuff, but the things he does and says, makes my empathy run out the window. I loved this video, can't wait to watch more. Sky is just beautiful. After reading solitaire I have nothing but pure contempt for Ben. I understand having issues BUT not that far out.... there is a difference between being shitty BECAUSE you have issues and being shitty AND having issues.... Ben falls in the second category. The things he does and say are just too much damaging and toxic for me to feel anything for him
All of the music in this show is just perfect. Kit and Joe both said that if they got tattoos, they would be of the smiley face Nick draws on Charlie's hand. In Tori's scene, you can see rainbows in the background.
Oh my God I love this, I already can’t wait to watch every video you do reacting to the show! I also like that you point out things about the actors too, it’s nice to hear that. Joe and Kit did such an amazing job, and they are pure perfection in these characters, their chemistry is off the charts. First of all, it’s great to follow this series of Episode Reactions because even though I saw the show with my husband, I missed someone to comment with. I cried a lot for this series and even now that I was watching some scenes through your video I dropped a few tears. I mean, this show seems to be made with magic. There is something magical, in the combination of music, sounds, actors, dialogues, history that makes me want to see it again. I am not a person who binds to stories or movies, I have never been like that! I don’t know why this happens to me!!! I really can’t figure out what secret ingredient is on this show that is pure magic to me. Pure happiness, pure love. If I was the dad of a Nick or a Charlie, I’d be the happiest dad in the world if they each found a boyfriend like that. I mean, they’re a perfect couple. I suffered as a boy because in our country you could not talk about homosexuality, it was a very serious fact, and in school I was also bullied for my sexual orientation and my appearance. Today, being able to see these scenes scroll on the screen is like I’m finally taking a revenge, after 30 years, on all those who made me suffer. My first reaction when I was watching the scenes for the first time was, "I can’t believe it, but is it really happening? Am I really finally seeing this?" It was an epiphany for me. Also like probably everyone, my first crush was for a guy like Nick who had the same kindness but unfortunately was straight and despite being protective with me, it was just to be nice. I wish things between him and me were the same as Charlie and Nick, but I had to keep it under wraps and accept that this was impossible to accomplish. Seeing that behind my same identical fears there is the possibility, today, to imagine a different ending fills me with a happiness that I can’t explain, it moves me. We finally made it, you guys, we’re normal not just for how we see ourselves as gay, but in other people’s eyes too, and this is really great.

First of all, it has to be acknowledged that the real star of this video is Sky (I hope I’m spelling her name correctly) - she is beautiful! Yes, it does seem Patreon is the way to go if you want to make a video that includes the entire episode, although I will say for a shorter version, this video worked very well. At this point, I can’t really imagine anybody else playing Charlie but Joe, and I can say the same thing for Kit as Nick. And it is nice to know that in real life Bash is as different from Ben as can possibly be, and that he and Joe have become very close friends. (I know some are saying that they are in a relationship, but until they say as much publicly, and I’m sticking with “very close friends.”)

On the form groups thing: This was actually the big giveaway to me when I read the comic that Alice is about *my* age. There was a fad in the late 00s/early 10s where schools got rid of single-year form groups and moved to 'vertical tutoring', where (usually) instead of forms being related to the year group, they're related to the house and have roughly equal numbers of people from each year group. My school moved to it in 2008, when I went into Year 9, with the 7-8 forms per year being replaced with 11-12 forms per house. The theoretical basis was that it would allow for more school cohesion and better peer-to-peer support between year groups... In practice, it just made form a really useless endeavour because your form tutor had to keep track of information that was relevant to 5-7 year groups, instead of one, so it really actually made school-to-home communication more difficult. Plus, most of the time people only really spent form time WITH the people in their year group and ignored the other 20-odd people there.

With the way the timeline of Solitaire and Heartstopper works out, the start of Heartstopper is "supposed to" be January 2010, which is roughly when the height of switching over happened. (FWIW: a lot of schools eventually switched back. I know that after I left, my secondary school academised and they kept the system for a couple years but eventually switched back to year-group forms in the middle of a school year.) (And the timeline years aren't strictly accurate, it's more just Alice's official shorthand based on the dates Solitaire officially takes place. Background details in the comic and TV show put them both roughly contemporaneous with their publication dates.)
That makes perfect sense to me now I left school in 2003 and only ever had form with my own year group, and this was one of 5he only things about this wonderful series that seemed really odd to me. I dont have any younger relatives so I guess this new way of mixing the years around must have passed me by, although it wouldn't surprise me if my all boys catholic school simply didnt bother adapting as they were not exactly big on moving with the times, the school was literally run by monks with the headmaster and several senior staff all being Christain brothers.

I spent my high school years (late 60s/early 70s trying to merge into the wallpaper in an attempt to avoid being bulled. It was not all bad, but it was nothing like what Charlie and Nick's experience. I stayed deep in the closet until my early 20s and came out in small increments. Initially, watching this series made me feel depressed, knowing that I cold never have that kind of early love. But looking back, I did have a great time in my 20s, at the height of the gay liberation/disco era, found love and many, many wonderful friendships. So ,the depression passed pretty quickly. No I did not live Charlie and Nicks' wonderful story, but I lived my own. |C

I've watched the series about 4 times now and have watched several different UA-camr's reaction videos because I'm trying to extend my time hanging out in this universe, while waiting for season 2. One of the things I loved about your video is the fact that it's NOT just a first reaction thing. I've seen a bunch of those. Most of them tend to comment on the same kinds of things because those are the big things that we all notice the first time through. They had no interests or classes in common so she had to find a way for them to meet to begin their story. Just the way I interpreted the change that many reactors have.mentioned.
At 8:40 - whenever I see Charlie on his own, eating lunch, I just so want to go over and hug him and stay with him. No one should be lonely at school. No one should be afraid to not eat lunch with the rest of the school. He has Tao and Isaac, he should always be with them. Tao would love it especially. You just want to sit with Charlie and try to get more confidence in himself.

At that moment did he already know, in the back of his mind, that he wanted to take Charlie to the beach one day? Don’t know if Alice or anyone else has confirmed this.

I picked up on the tiptoe scene right off because it was checking off Charlie’s wishlist! So sweet. I also wondered if Nick had any sort of non-straight feelings prior to meeting Charlie.
@@JackieRossLavender Hi, that happens in real life. I have a close friend, who we all thought was straight. I am gay, and even I thought he was straight, however when he met this wonderful guy, his heart melted for him, they fell in love, and seven years later they are still a couple. It does happen, and shows just how complicated sexuality can be. It is not crystal clear as many people seem to think.
He did actually, but he just didn't realise it. Alice Oseman has done like little arts on Tumblr and stuff, which she considers Canon. And in them reveals Nick had a crush on David Tennat when he was young and even dressed up as the 10th Doctor for Halloween. And I've heard that Alice also drew another piece where Nick tells Charlie he had a crush on a boy in year 7 or 8, but didn't realise it was a crush until years later, but I'm not sure if that ones Canon
My husband has played the series 5 or 6 times now and he may know all the dialog. LOL. Why do they can it "form" for the home room class? What does form mean and where did it come from? Thanks and keep up the great reaction videos.
Why has nobody commented on the fact that Ben wipes the kiss off of his lips when he leaves Charlie standing there waving goodbye to his back? The first time i saw that, bad news, don't go back. Charlies not wearing lipstick of a certain colour / shade that would give his secret away.
@@JackieRossLavender Ben wiping his lips after kissing Charlie is a sign that he wants to separate his meetings with Charlie from the rest of his school life. Once he leaves Charlie, he wipes all of Charlie from him, including the kiss. A terrible attitude problem.
Ben’s behaviour is absolutely inexcusable. But under the surface, he’s also a scared & insecure kid who hates himself, and I think Bash’s performance captures the nuances of that really well. I think making you despise a character *this much* without turning him into a lazy caricature villain is an underrated skill
exactly this. I think that’s what so special about Bash and the way he portrays Ben is that you are right, what he does is complete inexcusable, but you still feel for him under the surface and he’s not such a traditional two dimensional antagonist.

No. I uploaded my initial reaction to the the show which is just one video, then a review of the books and then my audience asked me to do live reactions to the show.
I have always wondered when and where the moment Nick suddenly felt he had feelings for Charlie. Nick asking Charlie to be part of the rugby team is a sign he wanted to try and get closer to Charlie, as to be fair, Charlie would be the last person suited to join a rugby team, he even said so. But there must be a moment, and I think it is when Nick saves Charlie from Ben's forced advances. That moment I feel was when the first spark was lit in Nick. Am I wrong?
I'm watching reaction videos on Heartstopper just so I can experience it again, but with someone else. I've watched it all countless times, but I'm enjoying watching other people watch it. I love how much everyone hates Ben and Harry because when you see interviews with them or other actors talk about them, they seem like great guys. It shows what a great actor Bash is because he's 100% unlikable in this series. I don't think they could have found anyone better than Kit and Joe for the leads in this. They are both exactly right.
Can't support you on Patreon because *poverty* but if you and Reece (Rhys?) ever need a dogsitter I'd be happy to do it free of charge 🐕 It's easy to write Ben off as a bad person - he's toxic, manipulative and he gaslights Charlie. But also you have to realise he doesn't have the support network Charlie has. That's not to say his behaviour can be justified in any way but I kinda felt sorry for him. Ben also deflects his insecurities onto Charlie because he lacks the emotional maturity to deal with his feelings.
Interesting take on Ben. I saw him as just a character foil to Charlie. Ben's internalized homophobia contrasting & highlighting Charlie's full acceptance of being gay. Likewise, Harry is Nick's character foil. Harry's homophobia seems derived from ignorance & what he thinks others want to hear rather than actual hatred. This contrasts against Nick's logical pursuit of self-discovery.

Joe really nailed Charlie’s confrontation scene with Ben. And the little side smile he flashes Nick as they start to walk out is precious.

(FWIW: a lot of schools eventually switched back. I know that after I left, my secondary school academised and they kept the system for a couple years but eventually switched back to year-group forms in the middle of a school year.)
(And the timeline years aren't strictly accurate, it's more just Alice's official shorthand based on the dates Solitaire officially takes place. Background details in the comic and TV show put them both roughly contemporaneous with their publication dates.)

That makes perfect sense to me now I left school in 2003 and only ever had form with my own year group, and this was one of 5he only things about this wonderful series that seemed really odd to me.
I dont have any younger relatives so I guess this new way of mixing the years around must have passed me by, although it wouldn't surprise me if my all boys catholic school simply didnt bother adapting as they were not exactly big on moving with the times, the school was literally run by monks with the headmaster and several senior staff all being Christain brothers.

@@JackieRossLavender Things didn’t go quite as planned - didn’t rewatch s1 & s2 and saw first 3 episodes (♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️😭😭♥️♥️♥️♥️) and then nephew gave up after 3 episodes- tired and had stuff to do before crashing out since still school day tomorrow and I ended watching more episodes of the newest season of Love is Blind before getting back to finishing the rest of season 3 and now I need to crash out too but I am so going to need to process it all and watch again, repeatedly to process it all...their performances just keep getting better and better. Am really looking forward to your reactions to season 3 now that I've seen it all. Are you binging the whole thing at once before you watch and react? I spent my high school years (late 60s/early 70s trying to merge into the wallpaper in an attempt to avoid being bulled. It was not all bad, but it was nothing like what Charlie and Nick's experience. I stayed deep in the closet until my early 20s and came out in small increments. Initially, watching this series made me feel depressed, knowing that I cold never have that kind of early love. But looking back, I did have a great time in my 20s, at the height of the gay liberation/disco era, found love and many, many wonderful friendships. So ,the depression passed pretty quickly. No I did not live Charlie and Nicks' wonderful story, but I lived my own.

@@JackieRossLavender I was late to the whole Heartstopper phenomenon. I've watched the series about 4 times now and have watched several different UA-camr's reaction videos because I'm trying to extend my time hanging out in this universe, while waiting for season 2.
One of the things I loved about your video is the fact that it's NOT just a first reaction thing. I've seen a bunch of those. Most of them tend to comment on the same kinds of things because those are the big things that we all notice the first time through. I'm loving the fact that you're commenting on other things, smaller things, more nuanced things. I'm hoping that continues through with your other reaction videos, as I catch up with them now. :)

Re: the mixed grade levels in form…I think it was poetic license by Alice in order to put Nick and Charlie in the same place with a daily opportunity to connect and start their relationship. They had no interests or classes in common so she had to find a way for them to meet to begin their story. Just the way I interpreted the change that many reactors have.mentioned.

At 8:40 - whenever I see Charlie on his own, eating lunch, I just so want to go over and hug him and stay with him. No one should be lonely at school. No one should be afraid to not eat lunch with the rest of the school. He has Tao and Isaac, he should always be with them. Tao would love it especially. You just want to sit with Charlie and try to get more confidence in himself.

Hi there! I’m in love with this show and still watching every reaction video for this series. 😅 One thing I haven’t seen commented about is at the end of this episode seagulls fly past Nick. At that moment did he already know, in the back of his mind, that he wanted to take Charlie to the beach one day? Don’t know if Alice or anyone else has confirmed this.

I love Mr. Ajayi and the bonus teachers content in the graphic novels was great. Since the show has been renewed I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the Paris trip and of course further go into Charlie's food issues.

I picked up on the tiptoe scene right off because it was checking off Charlie’s wishlist! So sweet. I also wondered if Nick had any sort of non-straight feelings prior to meeting Charlie.
my thoughts are that he didn’t and that’s why charlie came as such a shock to him.

I am gay, and even I thought he was straight, however when he met this wonderful guy, his heart melted for him, they fell in love, and seven years later they are still a couple. It does happen, and shows just how complicated sexuality can be. It is not crystal clear as many people seem to think.
He did actually, but he just didn't realise it. Alice Oseman has done like little arts on Tumblr and stuff, which she considers Canon. And in them reveals Nick had a crush on David Tennat when he was young and even dressed up as the 10th Doctor for Halloween. And I've heard that Alice also drew another piece where Nick tells Charlie he had a crush on a boy in year 7 or 8, but didn't realise it was a crush until years later, but I'm not sure if that ones Canon

Ben’s behaviour is absolutely inexcusable. But under the surface, he’s also a scared & insecure kid who hates himself, and I think Bash’s performance captures the nuances of that really well. I think making you despise a character *this much* without turning him into a lazy caricature villain is an underrated skill
exactly this. I think that’s what so special about Bash and the way he portrays Ben is that you are right, what he does is complete inexcusable, but you still feel for him under the surface and he’s not such a traditional two dimensional antagonist.

I have always wondered when and where the moment Nick suddenly felt he had feelings for Charlie. Nick asking Charlie to be part of the rugby team is a sign he wanted to try and get closer to Charlie, as to be fair, Charlie would be the last person suited to join a rugby team, he even said so. But there must be a moment, and I think it is when Nick saves Charlie from Ben's forced advances. That moment I feel was when the first spark was lit in Nick. Am I wrong?
I'm watching reaction videos on Heartstopper just so I can experience it again, but with someone else. I've watched it all countless times, but I'm enjoying watching other people watch it. I love how much everyone hates Ben and Harry because when you see interviews with them or other actors talk about them, they seem like great guys. It shows what a great actor Bash is because he's 100% unlikable in this series. I don't think they could have found anyone better than Kit and Joe for the leads in this. They are both exactly right.

It's easy to write Ben off as a bad person - he's toxic, manipulative and he gaslights Charlie. But also you have to realise he doesn't have the support network Charlie has. That's not to say his behaviour can be justified in any way but I kinda felt sorry for him. Ben also deflects his insecurities onto Charlie because he lacks the emotional maturity to deal with his feelings.
Interesting take on Ben. I saw him as just a character foil to Charlie. Ben's internalized homophobia contrasting & highlighting Charlie's full acceptance of being gay.
Likewise, Harry is Nick's character foil. Harry's homophobia seems derived from ignorance & what he thinks others want to hear rather than actual hatred. This contrasts against Nick's logical pursuit of self-discovery.
