We’ve wanted to do this race for a few years, but not had opportunity with our schedule; this year we made it & so happy that we did!
A festival of races: Day 1, Middle distances of 113 & 76. Day 2, Junior Super Sprint, Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic.
Something for everyone, whatever age or ability!
We did the 76 distance - 1.9 km swim, 60km bike, 14km run
Nick & Rio did it together & Tia ( @_little.x.wolf_ ) did it solo.
This was Tia’s longest distance in a tri. She had a great attitude for it; she hadn’t really trained for it over the holidays & had been getting shin splints recently, but she really wanted to grasp the opportunity to try this distance (as there wouldn't be another chance for a year); she decided to use it as a training & learning session, to discover her mental strength for the distance; not focusing on a time. This girl was made for endurance, she loved it! She was one of the few that didn’t wear a wetsuit (it was cold swim) & her shin splints did play up, but she choose to work through it, got to the end & said she could have done further! She’s 17, when she’s 18 she can do an Ironman 70.3 (1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run) - she said she’s ready & waiting! She came first in her age category of 16-29 females! SO proud of her!
Been a tough few weeks for Rio, so he was happy to be back in a race. There were logistics with layers for Rio, to keep him warm during the cold swim & to keep him cool in the later heat! Apologies to the kind lady on the run course that cheered them on & asked them to stop to take a photo - there was no way that Nick was going to stop during a run race, but if you are ever in Dubai, send us a message & Rio would love to take a photo with you! Rio did his classic ‘Rio run’ to cross the finish line & Nick was impressed with their time until 40 mins after recovering realising that he didn’t do the last 3km extra loop - mortified he went back out & did the extra 3k - sore for Nick but Rio was delighted by the surprise extra!
