KingHarlaus1 I've been living in Australia for 16-17 years now. English isn't too hard to learn :) Thank you, my German is worse than my English, however :(
The song is based off of an English patriotic song called I Vow to Thee, my Country, which, like the Star Spangled Banner, began as a poem which was put to music later on. But the lyrics of I Vow to Thee, My Country were matched up with the theme from Holst's Jupiter. You can find a recording of I Vow to Thee, my Country being sung to that theme anywhere on UA-cam :P :)
True, but I suppose the reasoning is that since the first and last minutes or so of Jupiter are not present, it makes more sense to call it I Vow to Thee My Country. That, and I believe that today, more people are aware of I Vow to Thee My Country than they are with any works by Holst.
Holst was asked to write a separate piece of music for an occasion that was meant to be patriotic and would be used with this particular poem, but he was so busy he just gave them the middle section from Jupiter. World in Union is this theme but is in 4/4 time instead of 3/4 time.
The U.S. was founded in South America. In the 17th century, the U.S. met England. The U.S. made trade proposals and England accepted them. They became allies, later friends and destroyed the Japanese menace together. Good times.

I just found what song this is based on, it's "Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity" by Holst. I'm sure many of you already knew that, but I suggest listening to that, since it's not background music it's much more intense!
fantastic arrangement of a wonderful tune. Thank you. This cracks me up every time i hear it, and reminds me of the sacrifice I made in WW2 along with other RAF boys. The final sacrifice. I hope this is played at my funeral.
I've never played any Civ games but its so cool to see this song in it. It's one of my favourite anthems in the whole world (national anthems included). It's just slightly behind USSR/Russias national anthem
Nope! There is no Duchess of Lancaster, only a duke. Similarly, there is no real equivalent of "Lord" for a woman - it could be Lady or Baroness, depending on the title.
It's not entirely uncommon for women to take the masculine form of a title if they're regnant (i.e. not the spouse of the title holder, but holding the land directly in their own name). There have been examples of women styling themselves "King", too, though not in England.
Some of you might not know this, but the nation of England doesn't actually have a national anthem. The United Kingdom has God Save the Queen. Wales has Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau . I think this song should be the English anthem.
The English don't have a form of national dress, either, interestingly. I think they went with Jerusalem for us for the Olympics, which I also enjoy. But this is a great song.
I'm amazed that few people in the comments made any remarks about how has a feature rendition of Holst's Jupiter from the Planets from 1:30 onwards, who of course is a brilliant English composer. That's honestly what made me love this theme even more.
fleetstreet11 The original Civ V forgot to account for queens, thus female leaders following Tradition are also called 'Lord'. As far as I remember, a later patch or Gods and Kings fixed this by adding 'Lady'. You can also modify the code to change titles based on gender.
This message goes to those who are STILL arguing over which country is better as well as insulting each's nations. I really don't think we should be judging an entire people by the actions of their government. This goes for any nation. Don't like the United States Government? Ok, a lot of US citizens will agree with you on that, most of us publicly state that we hate our current government. We want them to stop meddling in foreign affairs probably more than anyone. But to call all Americans moronic, imperialistic, and harmful based on the actions of their government (and the handful of embarrassing idiots that somehow always end up in the media) is an unfair and uneducated assumption. Similar to how we shouldn't assume all Chinese citizens support their government and act in a stereotypical way. The US is definitely not the great and all-powerful nation an uneducated few claim it to be. The US government does not represent its people as it claims to. We have no real power. It is basically an inefficient version of despotism, where the federal government still holds nearly absolute power, but the power is spread between somewhere around 600 people who each have their own agendas. 600 out of 318,560,140 people; .00019%. That is not an accurate representation of the people, correct? We vote on these people every couple of years as they make promises and kiss babies, but once those people are in office, we have no control over what they actually do. Then add in the states and things get even more muddled. They are still doing a better job than the federal government however. Don't get me wrong, I support democracy whole-heartedly... when it works. In the US right now, it doesn't. Bring on the angry rebuttals.
For the record, i'm copying your comment and i'll be pasting it whenever there is a "U.S. Warmonger" debate, for what you wrote is a pinnacle of understanding and dare I say... Wisdom.
I agree with everything you said. I feel like the states need to become more powerful than what they are today. I'm not saying that the states should open up and secede from the Union, nor should the United States become the Confederate States, but certain issues should be handled exclusively by the state governments. Both conservative and progressive mindsets have their pros and cons, and the states should adopt the pros of each and discard the cons and the cons that occur when two pros come together. I believe that each person should act as independents, and that the party system should be discarded. I would like the states to start acting on their own more often than not, and overall decide their own fates rather than a select few that are isolated to one side of the continent. As an Iowan, I have recently lived in a more progressive state that has some conservative tendencies. I think that what is occurring here in my home state is great, because it brings together multiple thought processes that work wonderfully together. Of course there are some real idiots here just like anywhere, but when extremists act independently of their constituents, they break down the entire system of the representative democracy.
Charlie Doyle as an Iowan, I have to say I seem to have more faith in my state government that in the federal one. Perhaps its misplaced faith, but nevertheless

One of the top five pieces of music in any video game ever.
I want to decline her trade agreements but this song turns me into an emotional babbling mess before I can do it
Its Jupiter! Every classical song I like is just Jupiter remixed!
+Rynosaur94 Holy shit it's actually fucking Jupiter
+unoe meme Yup, at 1:32 it becomes fucking obvious
The song is based off of an English patriotic song called I Vow to Thee, my Country, which, like the Star Spangled Banner, began as a poem which was put to music later on. But the lyrics of I Vow to Thee, My Country were matched up with the theme from Holst's Jupiter. You can find a recording of I Vow to Thee, my Country being sung to that theme anywhere on UA-cam :P :)
Jupiter came first. The "I vow to thee" part was taken from it, by request of Holst, and adapted into a full song.
The fact that your picture is George Consatnza made me read your comment in his voice and it fit PERFECTLY.
"Would you be interested in a trade agreement with England?"
Sure.
+The Avalorian Alright. How about I give you... my Incense for your... let's see... Salt, Gems, Gold, Silk, Citrus, Pearls and 420 GPT?
+Vortex Blade that offer is extremely unfair!
+Terminator 827 Not in her mind!
@@term-827 would you like some longbowmen and ships of the line wrecking your shit instead then :D
This is actually Jupiter from the Planets by Gustav Holst. It was later adapted to the poem to be sung as I vow to thee my country.
This is why I played England on my 1st playthrough.
The U.S. was founded in South America. In the 17th century, the U.S. met England. The U.S. made trade proposals and England accepted them. They became allies, later friends and destroyed the Japanese menace together. Good times.
For 1 sec I thought yo.u were referring to history.
I'll never forget he campaign where England started at South America and dominated pretty much the whole continent
+Bogdan Petrescu In Civ 5 I actually played as Japanese Empire and set the US and British as my primary objective, lmao
Bobby Wibowo I have 3 letters for you: D-I-E.
+Bogdan Petrescu Another 3 for ya: R.I.P
+Bogdan Petrescu Oh, you were talking about civ. For a second I thought you were like a weird thai fellow whom thought that the Sami were just Thais Estonians Hungarians and Latvians combined into one people. And that the thai people discovered the world 2000 years ago in hot-air balloons.
I am from Spain and I love playing with England. Great Lighthouse + Exploration + Ship of the line = Incredible
This theme is beautiful as well, one of my favourite
This is a perfect song summarizing Elizabeth the firsts entire reign and lifetime really.
Dear god! The symmetry! THE SYMMETRY!!!!
"WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED IN A TRADE AGREEMENT WITH ENGLAND?"
Elizabeth:All your gold,gems,iron,alluminium,coal,uranium and 3 cities for 1 banana,ok?
Luan Andres
you cant trade bananas
Zaythos
I beg to differ....
When I play Civ 5 I only play as England primarily because of this theme (also, ship of the line is great for annihilating coastal cities!)
RIP opponents
This video is why I can't win a Domination Victory when England is in the game
I just found what song this is based on, it's "Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity" by Holst. I'm sure many of you already knew that, but I suggest listening to that, since it's not background music it's much more intense!
Rest In Peace Queen Elizabeth II
Elizabeth II is at peace.
Both her Was&Peace theme are just epic and pure beautiful.
nothing beats this at full volume blasted
I like how they used Planets - Jupiter by Holst for English theme.
Dead Pool Actually, Gustav Holst was the one who gave the melody 'Thaxted' to the English patriotic hymn "I vow to thee, my country".
The bit starting at 1:30 is straight out of Jupiter and as Rubicon said it was given to the hymn by Holst himself.
I hope they bring back I Vow To Thee My Country or use Rule Britannia as the English theme in Civ VI.
Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson They should put you in it.
England op af. England on islands is basically victory if you know how to play properly. I somewhat do...
fantastic arrangement of a wonderful tune.
Thank you.
This cracks me up every time i hear it, and reminds me of the sacrifice I made in WW2
along with other RAF boys.
The final sacrifice.
I hope this is played at my funeral.
Are you still with us my good man ?
hope youre still doing alright, Matt Black.
Matt black you still here on this beloved earth of ours??
I've never played any Civ games but its so cool to see this song in it. It's one of my favourite anthems in the whole world (national anthems included). It's just slightly behind USSR/Russias national anthem
People in England played that on prince Philips funeral and sir Winston Churchill's funeral
You can see why. It’s a bloody beautiful song.
@@KrazyKevsta As well as Lady Thatcher's
Glorious. Absolutely glorious.
God save Queen Elizabeth II!!
You're signing that trade agreement.
No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
"Lord Elizabeth of England"
...wat
The current queen is the Duke of Lancaster, so...
thelouisfanclub
Duchess surely.
Civ 5 Elizabeth I saying "We must avoid stepping on each other's toes" is how I learned I had a foot fetish.
I still think this should be the anthem unless the royals are present. It's such a great piece of music.
England definitely has the best music in the game
As a Brit, this makes me feel emotional whenever I hear it :')
Ah yes, my favorite victim in the game... especially as Suleiman.
Suleiman: Hmm, nice Ship of the Line. IT WILL LOOK GREAT IN MY COLLECTION!
the problem is you need ironclads
+Valts Z privateers work great with boarding party or just spamming them
+Sunrise Shine 273 but england would have spammed sotl
+Sunrise Shine 273 longbows as well so you would be bombed without seeing the target
WOW i never focused on the theme's quality until now
I heard this at the Tank Museum in the WW1 Exhibit
I Vow to Thee, My Country in general or like this specific version?
One of the first civ I've played. Really fun to dominate entire ocean.
I can't think of any other theme in ¨Sid Meier's Civilization V¨ that is more nostalgic and beautiful than this ;)
Farewell Most Gracious Majesty. 😭
Goddammit every time I hear this I have to embark on a civ 5/6 or eu4 England campaign.
Some of you might not know this, but the nation of England doesn't actually have a national anthem.
The United Kingdom has God Save the Queen. Wales has Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau
.
Invader, explorer, pioneer...just from different perspectives
"I am altering the trade agreement. Pray I don't alter it further."
"Or what?"
*Ship of the Line go boom*
fleetstreet11 The original Civ V forgot to account for queens, thus female leaders following Tradition are also called 'Lord'. As far as I remember, a later patch or Gods and Kings fixed this by adding 'Lady'. You can also modify the code to change titles based on gender.
yeah it's fixed thank goodness.
Studying empires in my history course as part of one of the topics. This track really helps motivate me!
England ! Land, hope and glory !
To be born English is to have won the lottery of life
I respectfully disagree.
@Conor- I wholeheartedly agree!
EU didn't want a trade agreement, so GB left.
But if the EU didn't want a trade agreement, what are all those English ships doing near their coastal cities?
EU and UK had a "trade agreement", and one that was very advantageous for the UK. Now it looks like UK will go home with nothing.
Bring on the angry rebuttals.
finally, somebody intelligent has decided to leave their opinion in the comment section!
Perhaps its misplaced faith, but nevertheless
rationality?! YOU LIVED!? seriously though it's good to see rational people in the world..
