In the early 1980s, after ruining too many buttonholes with either a seam ripper or scissors, I went to the hardware store and bought a 1cm wide wood chisel. From a builder's supply store I begged a very small piece of hardwood from their scrap bin to serve as a cutting base. There had to be a lot of us doing this because a few years later the buttonhole cutter appeared on the market.

I use a fresh razor blade to cut my buttonholes. I guard one end with a pin so I don't cut through the stitches.

Well another "duh" moment! I did not realize I can adjust this automatic feature on my machine!! I actually have an old old machine with a buttonholer attachment that makes fabulous buttonholes that I pull out when making them instead of using my newer machine.
I also kind of fold the opened buttonhole open so that I can trim any threads really close. Very Carefully lol😉.
Thank you, have a fabulous today!

If I need to trim any extra thread - I like to do it on folded open buttonhole, too!🤗

I use a seam ripper for button holes because it's hard for me to use embroidery scissors and I don't have the chisel. I place pins horizontally across the ends of the button hole to block me from cutting into the stitches.

Thanks for this video, now hopefully my buttonholes will look better and more professional. Did you get a new sewing maching?
I have the Singer Heavy Duty, and my son got me the Singer Patchwork as a gift and I have a very old Viking and a Singer Overlock, that sounds very noisy to me.

This is a great video. I just put buttons on a project and thought my placement was centered, but it was offset. I will definitely pay more attention to the lines on the foot to get proper placement. Greatly Appreciated 🤗

Wow great tip on the gold metal thread. I didn't know a sewing machine would sew with that. I'll try it. Thanks you, you're so sweet.

I use Mettler Metallic thread - it has a great shine and comes in a few different metallic colors. Works well for decorative seams🤗

Is the sewing machine new to yo? I seem to recall you had an industrial plus a Singer. What made you upgrade?

Good eye!😁 I still use industrial, but it’s straight stitch only, so I cannot use it for buttonholes. For domestic sewing machine, I’m currently partnering with Brother and testing a few new-to-me machines. This particular one is computerized CS10s, which has one-step buttonhole and a few different styles of buttonholes🤗

I stopped using the chisel and started using a one-sided razor blade. It makes a very clean cut, but you do have to be precise and careful not to cut past the bar tack at the ends. . I also stopped using wood as my base and started using cutting mat. I love my button holes now.

After ripping fabric with a seam ripper when making a buttonhole 🤬, I only use small embroidery scissors. I have so much more control over the cutting now. Lesson learned the hard way!

Buttonholes can really be fragile, and any mistake is so hard to fix, especially when buttonhole is opened🫣

thank you so much julijia, this video got me excited about sewing buttonholes again lol. I akso use embroidery scissors to open them, i find it so scary when people use the seam ripper, it feels so risky!

    • @india1422

If I use a seam ripper I put a pin just in front of the bar tack. Then if I slip the pin stops the ripper ripping through the end

I bring the bottom bar of the seam ripper up before the end of the button hole before starting to cut to prevent going too far. I feel safer doing that than using scissors.

I tend to be just this side of OCD regarding personal safety. 50+ years of sewing, every buttonhole opened with a seam ripper, never messed one up. Bought a chisel a few years back, but have yet to use it. (Now I've probably just jinxed myself. Need to be extra careful on next project.)
