  • Delta Air Lines widget livery airliners departing and landing on runway 34 (three-four) at Salt Lake City Airport in May of 1995. Aircraft seen at SLC include Delta Boeing 727's, a 737, 757's, a 767, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar and a seagull (the state bird of Utah). Also in this video are a Vanguard Airlines and Southwest 737-200.
    This was VHS video taped at an area of the SLC airport that had a parking lot for the public to watch planes land and take off. The airport also provided audio via outdoor speakers of communication between the tower and aircraft.

    I miss watching the B-727s,B 737-200s, and L-1011s when SLC had an observation lot by the end of 34R. Thanks for the video.

      I wonder if any airports in the U.S. continue to have aircraft observation areas such as this. I use to live in Des Moines, IA and there was a great parking area at the Des Moines airport next to the main runway to watch planes. I believe that is gone too.

    Love the 727! Back when the jet pushed you back in the seat. It also sounded like a rocket, during takeoff. The 737/A320s are what most of us fly on now and they are so drab. I did recently fly out of Santa Ana/John Wayne/Orange County, CA airport on a Delta 757-200. That was a high performance takeoff, where we sat for 15 seconds as they spooled up the big Pratt turbofans, then released the brakes....we shot off like a missile right up and out to the ocean.

    • @WAL_DC-6B
      @WAL_DC-6B  2 роки тому

      Yes, I agree that the 737s and A320s are quite drab in comparison to the older, nosier jetliners of the past such as the 727 and DC-9.

      they changed their livery more than any otherlegacy carrier in the United States, the worst was the one with the fabric design that looked like it was rustling upward in the wind. basically all the livery the tried since the classic widget one sucked.

  • @sandiegotrojandawg

    Delta's "widget" livery design (first appeared in 1961) was truly one of the most beautiful in the airline industry. In fact, it could be said that Delta's 747's from the early 1970's were the most beautiful 747's of all time. This livery design looked great on any aircraft and it is sorely missed when compared to most airline's livery designs of today = boring, bland, bleak, and just plain ugly.

    •  5 років тому

      I agree on the new planes being boring but I understand with new carbon technology its allowing some new planes not to need paint jobs. Still doesn't change the fact they could be more creative with their logos, colors and design.

    I cannot believe that I used to be young kid of age of 10-15 years old, see these hardworking horses aircrafts with extremely loud engines vibrating bleachers area of SLC international airport back in '95-'99. I missed those times, theyre way better than what they offer these days today. Quiet and no ATC listen to. I want serious roars and vibrations, THAT is music to my ears.... I can remember those fields that are grass and such, and now they are remodeling for new 2024 SLC Int'l airport expansion project with all concretes being laid out. I used love Delta so much just like I love Southwest airline. Now, I hated Delta because they fly AIrbus now, I have seen more of Airbus than Mcdonnells and Boeing. ever since then, I never flew Delta, it wasnt the same. I wish somtimes things didnt change.

      Matt, thanks for your comments. I know what you mean, plane watching at airports ain't what it use to be. It seems most airlines just use late model 737's and Airbuses. In short, boring airliners. I grew up near Chicago's O'Hare Field back in the 1960's. If you went to watch the airliner activity about 1967 or '68 you could literally just stand long the fence line next to the busy taxiway (and the cops wouldn't bother you) and watch go by and take off all sorts of aircraft. Back then you'd see Ozark Martin 404's and Douglas DC-3's, North Central Convair 440's, American Airlines Lockheed L-188 Electras, BOAC Vickers VC-10's, United Douglas DC-6's and Vickers Viscounts, Continental Boeing 707's, Delta Douglas DC-7's, Mexicana De Havilland Comet IV's, Air Canada Vickers Vanguards, occasionally USAF Illinois Air Guard Fairchild C-119's and Boeing KC-97G's, Sears Roebucks DC-3's (yes, that Sears), Eastern Boeing 727-100's, Flying Tigers Canadair CL-44's, etc.,. etc.,. Yeah, I miss the old days too.

      There were other airports in the U.S. that had designated parking lots to spot airliners. Des Moines, IA had a nice place to pull off and watch the planes take off and land. Both of Chicago's major airports, Midway and O'Hare, had viewing decks on top of one of the terminal buildings. This was true for LAX (Los Angeles) as well. St Louis, MO and Milwaukee, WI may still have their places to pull off and watch the planes fly by.

      Things weren't that much better in the 1980s when I did a lot of flying or just airliner watching. It seems that every time I flew somewhere it was on a Boeing 727. I took a trip to South America in 1987 and four of the five flights were on 727s (Avianca, Aerolineas Argentinas, Air Panama, and Eastern Airlines). Just a short one-hour trip on a Faucett Peru Airlines DC-8 broke up the monotony.

      Those were the original Delta Connection CRJ100/200s that SkyWest and ComAir opertated. They were the first generation of the Canadair/Bombardier regional jets. I remember when they built Concourse terminal C at Cincinnati (CVG) for all of these CRJs. It no longer exists if you go to CVG.

    I would definitely suggest a good Burlington coat if you're going to the northern region of the Santa Fe mountains

    I finally figured out that in the headline, "aircraft" was plural. I thought for a while we were being shown the same aircraft taking off over and over. :)
