Those gaskets are the only way to go. From sbc to the 3.1/3.4 /3.8 and Even on the "LS" motors, the updated green intake gaskets that supercede the orange aren't as good as those metal framed gaskets.
90W7 7.25.17. I only use the metal framed type, from either Fel-Pro, Magnum, or GM, in the 3.1/3.4 & the 3.8L V6 engines that I've worked on. Have not had one issue after I started using them! 🏁
Those dart vortecs looks very close to my summit vortecs. The intake ports oval top part is what looks the same I thought that was weird when I saw the summits but it makes me feel better the darts are the same. My oem vortecs are perfectly straight on the raised intake port section.
How you doing my name is John I been a subscriber for about a year-and-a-half. I'm honestly very impressed and learned a lot from your videos my profession is collision repair and mechanic related to any collision damage. Unfortunately age is creeping up on me Collision repair life can be tough on the body and health, and I have both problems I'd love to feel the motor someday and you inspired me to do so I don't know just looks like something I'd like to do I didn't know it was so precise and I was ripping Motors apart when I was 8 years old normal workers and whatnot just to see how they worked. Well I'll get to the question and it's about a cylinder head I was watching you do and then you showed a shelf that had many of them and you said they were for sale well I'm working on a friend's car it's a 1970 Mach 3 Continental with a Ford 460 it has some issues I'd like to ask you questions if I could just to make sure I'm doing the right thing and researching before I do anything I think it needs heads because it doesn't have the hardened seats in them and I believe the valves are a little burnt on the ends so I'd like to know if I could for one purchase two cylinder heads from you and if I was able to email you or get in touch with you just to ask some questions of course it's a budget fix I would love to break it all down and rebuild it but once again I want to do the research before I could give a price and if I am making the right decision I believe it just needs the top-end done but I'll have to check clearances on the main bearings and what not so I have a few questions but most important the heads so if you could somehow get in touch I'd appreciate it, I would assume you could reply to this and I'm sure we could figure something out I could send you back the heads I have either to be repaired or you could keep them or just sell me ones you've already done, either way I know you're busy and I appreciate all you taught me and I'm sure everybody that watches you appreciates your hard work.
Looking for help second time around. Hello, been watching your videos, thank you. I upgrading a very early 350( V1027MU) Flint V8,Oct.27th 350/295hp block. I pulled this out of 67/68 Camaro in 1971. been running this since 1975 build. 10.5 forged TRW pistons, chrome molly rings. I want upgrade to a hydraulic roller bump stick(Howard brand?). Budget is a concern with that said, which are better early LT Corvette heads or later Vortec type head. Current heads came on the engine, 194/150 intake/exhaust which I port matched and cc'd also have press in studs which I pinned. I don't remember the cam specification(flat tappet hydraulic) but the Rhoads lifters didn't help idle quality. Stick shift car application. This is a street/strip fun car. Thank you for you answer in advance. The car is a 1978 Oldsmobile Omega, factory 4 speed I bought new in 1977. Mike 01/2019
Same issue with roller lifters? And what paint/color did you use on that block? That is a beautiful color! Building a #683 4blt block with a the roller valve train. I want a budget but I only have one shot at this so I don't want to screw anything up. I've sourced everything but the lifters...
Hello. Good vídeo. And i have a question, i got a intake exactly the same in my 350 vortec heads. But my motor is nothing special. Just cam 262/270 flat tapet. Msd headers shorty. But. In the instructions of the intake i saw its for 1500 rpm to 6500 the question is. The intake is to big for my set up? Intake 7116 edelbrock. I need something more small?? Thanks alot 👍👍👌
If you blow the intake gasket could you get water in the oil I have a 1998 Chevrolet C 1500 and the truck never run over to 210 but while passing a vehicle when I started to slow down I discovered a little bit of a miss and now I have water in my oil but the truck never run hot enough to blow a head gasket so I’m kind of confused
i just bought a 5.7 out of a 94 chevy ,truck ,4 whl ,drive ,i want to know if it a good motor to rebuild, and the pros and cons of the motor , ? if you could help ,it be appreciated thanks
I no this is an older video, but how did the new gaskets work out? I have a 98 k1500 5.7. It was using around half a gallon to a gallon of coolent ever 200 miles, it rarely smoke unless very cold or damp outside. The oil always looked good for a truck with 200,000 miles on it. I finally tore into the intake finding some mayo resido on the vaulve covers, the intake was ate up, i replaced them with Victor reins gaskets. Truck runs better and never smokes, tail pipe is always dry. I am still loosing coolent... it has a new waterpump, thermostat and radiator+ cap. Think these would work for me??
Forgive my ignorance... scoring on my piston skirts means that my ring tension is gone or is it that the cylinder-wall-side of the ring surface has worn so much that support is gone? I ask because on a budget I'm trying to figure out if I need new rings and simply hone the cylinders or will I need to bore the cylinders and resize the pistons?
Myvintageiron7512 Ok thanks man I'm intimidated by the procedure only hoping OCD(lol) enough to measure correctly 72 times and that my ADHD doesn't preclude the whole operation
Myvintageiron7512 No no if I want to become an experienced engine builder like my dad and yourself, I'll just lump it up and put in the time. Plus machine shops charge money to do a lot of the things we can do on our own with a little diligence. So a dial bore gauge a micrometer and a set of telescoping gauges, a sheet of paper and pen are all I need right..... and a lot of patience
Another thing, my 350 block uses .020 under main bearing being rebuilt at least once... how many times can my crank be reground before I need a new one? Next, if I went with a 383 stroker set up would I be better served align-boring my mains to the static size of the 400 crankshaft than having one's mains undersized to fit the 350 mains? I'm thinking the added material in the larger journals give more stability.
Hi and enjoying your videos. Just a quick question . I've got a 1979 SB350 corvette, in Australia, unmodified. We have 3 fuels to choose from 91, 95, 98. Which one would you consider appropriate. I've been running the 95, not sure if one of the others is better. Many thanks, lefty
also depends on compression ratio and if youve got forced induction (supercharged or turbocharged), a higher grade helps prevent detonation/ knock (premature ignition), really you should be fine with 91, here in central US weve got 87, 89, 91, and some places carry up to 93.. 91 is premium grade where im at
One problem with comparing octane is that in the USA, the RON/MON measurement is used, whereas in other countries, RON is the only number used. That is why 2 fuels with the same anti-knock performance can have 2 different numbers based on where you live.
Sir, great channel just subscribed. I have a vin r csfi 5.7 vortec in a 99 c3500. I want to get a rebuild, unsure if I want to stroke to a 383. You mentioned in a previous video that the heads tend to crack. Is that also the case on the vin r? Where are you located and do you do rebuilds?
does felpro offer a problem solver intake gasket for the 454 vortec? Also any info on building a 454 vortec as far as head work and upgrades would be great
I'm new to you our channel and I'm also new to Chevys so I have a few questions. First off I just got a 90 Corvette completely stock except for the exhaust. And in wanting to upgrade the heads but keep the TPI set up any advice would be helpful. I'm not wanting to dig to far into the motor the Corvette was my father's and has 95k on her and runs strong but definitely has room for improvement.
Great Vid. I have a fresh 355 with Dart heads that were from a circle track car. Heads were milled and i can see light on #8 intake through my victor Jr intake. My machine shop said to use washers on all 4 corners that equal gasket I'd. Then mold BB` model clay on all runners top and bottom. Slice in half and measure depth. Going to try tomorrow. Also china wall close but not hitting yet. Anything else i can try? Thanks. John
Bearings do not like Dexcool either or even standard green coolant. Miraculously my 97 5.0L runs fine on 20W50 and lucas after the intake gasket disaster with ethylene glycol coolant. .
Whatever the manufacturer specs are. Used theses when I replaced mine. I’m not sure but I believe it was a low foot lbs spec. 12 or something like that. Replaced 1 1/2 yrs ago and have had no problem since.
Thanks a ton for all of this! Can you explain or better yet show the difference between 95 and earlier and 96-2000 sbc coolant bypass. I hear that the early engines had the hole below the water pump opening. Now the 96 up blocks don't have the extra passage as I understand. I hear coolant needs to circulate prior to the thermostat opening to prevent hot spots before the t-stat opens. How is this accomplished? And do you need to make any changes when Installing a Vortec style head on an earlier block or installing early heads on a Vortech block without the extra passage? I've heard some suggest drilling a hole... thoughts on that? Thanks again!
I recently viewed your video about using Vortec heads on a 350 eng. Is it mandatory to drill the two center holes in the head and manifold? I will will be running a carburetor. Also will stock length pushrods that used with my early 350 heads work with my vortec heads? Thnx.
Nice video my friend. Do you know of an intake manifold with an oil tube that fits Vortec heads ??? or is their an intake manifold which I can drill the hole to fit the oil tube ??? Thanks for your help
Ooh is this gonna be about the 1996-1998(1999 mid years) and the almost LS engine? The old small block 5.7 with that trash spider injection and 2 piece intake manifold? Save the struggle, either get the marine MPFI intake manifold with external fuel rails OR swap to carb\carb fuel injection throttle body. Also: Felpro Premium top end engine gasket kit(iE: the problem solver series) Fixed any and every issue I ever had. The fiber gaskets are whack sauce. MAYBE brand new clean bolts and thread chased holes MAYBE that might seal up fine. For the work involved, save the struggle, get the Fel-Pro premium/problem solver gaskets/upper engine gasket kit.

I have an intake manifold leaking oil through the top of the bolts on a 348 Chevy engine. Would you recommend this Fel-Pro line to stop the leaks. Also, I've heard that there are different thicknesses of gaskets, how do I determine what thickness to install on the intake?
I have a set of aftermarket heads , they have the old pattern, and vortec, but they are 220 cc intake runners, I'm having trouble finding a gasket that fits the ports, I'm running the old style intake, the gaskets I have on it now are slightly smaller than the intake ports! It's not a full race port, do you have any idea what might work? These look like they might fit the ports, but the intake bolt pattern is the old 1st gen , that's the trouble with aftermarket parts, I have the largest port gasket I could find, without getting a race port gasket, I even modified them a bit, I enlarged the gaskets, as far as I felt comfortable, they still are slightly small, thanks

seems like there is plenty of open room to drill and tap a couple bolts in that center area. why they are not there already is baffling to me, just looking at them here, even if there is water jacket behind, it's the same with other sbc heads, right?. someone screwed the pooch in the r&d dept at gm. haha

@alanf.4095 also wondering what torque specs are , google seems to be all over the place from 11ft lbs - 30ft lbs. about to set my manifold as well.
Was anyone else thinking "whammy"!! Champ kind repairing engines awsome
Those dart vortecs looks very close to my summit vortecs. The intake ports oval top part is what looks the same I thought that was weird when I saw the summits but it makes me feel better the darts are the same. My oem vortecs are perfectly straight on the raised intake port section.
Are you still making videos? Enjoyed them.
yep I stop in the summer too hot here getting ready to crank em up again soon
I do have heads for that message me on Facebook at myvintageiron7512
Thanks for the video....that's what I'm getting ready to do.
What head gaskets did you use? Part number??
What cylinder head bolts do you recommend for the vortec heads for a older 350
Vortec heads are better
@@Myvintageiron7512 Thank you
Same issue with roller lifters?
Thanks alot 👍👍👌
no it will work fine
Can you do a video on the coolant bypass setup required for the Vortech heads?
The Vortec engine I bought from the junkyard actually had these gaskets on it.
Good sign...someone knew what they were doing !
The block needs to be measured in order to answer these questions
Myvintageiron7512
Ok thanks man I'm intimidated by the procedure only hoping OCD(lol) enough to measure correctly 72 times and that my ADHD doesn't preclude the whole operation
Take it to a machine shop
Myvintageiron7512
No no if I want to become an experienced engine builder like my dad and yourself, I'll just lump it up and put in the time.
95 should be fine
also depends on compression ratio and if youve got forced induction (supercharged or turbocharged), a higher grade helps prevent detonation/ knock (premature ignition), really you should be fine with 91, here in central US weve got 87, 89, 91, and some places carry up to 93..
Also any info on building a 454 vortec as far as head work and upgrades would be great
Hey just wanted to know with the vortec can I machine the seat to a 1.570 to fit a bigger spring size?
I'm new to you our channel and I'm also new to Chevys so I have a few questions. First off I just got a 90 Corvette completely stock except for the exhaust. And in wanting to upgrade the heads but keep the TPI set up any advice would be helpful. I'm not wanting to dig to far into the motor the Corvette was my father's and has 95k on her and runs strong but definitely has room for improvement.
Dart Iron Eagle 180 cc runners 64 cc chambers and a good cam to match they will wake her up
Thanks. John
had that issue on my 97 7.4; but it was the rear ports. it ended up toasting my crank, do to the dexcool clogging my oil pump
Bearings do not like Dexcool either or even standard green coolant. Miraculously my 97 5.0L runs fine on 20W50 and lucas after the intake gasket disaster with ethylene glycol coolant.
.
Hey man love the videos but how much torque should I use with these gaskets?
Whatever the manufacturer specs are. Used theses when I replaced mine. I’m not sure but I believe it was a low foot lbs spec. 12 or something like that. Replaced 1 1/2 yrs ago and have had no problem since.
I have a 2000 5.7 vortex out of suburban. need all pieces on top! were do I find them
Thanks a ton for all of this!
Watch some PISS CUTTER PERFORMANCE videos on UA-cam he’s a master chief on 350 vortec coolant bypass videos and everything mostly for the vortec 96/02
I recently viewed your video about using Vortec heads on a 350 eng. Is it mandatory to drill the two center holes in the head and manifold? I will will be running a carburetor. Also will stock length pushrods that used with my early 350 heads work with my vortec heads? Thnx.
Will these be a lot better than the regular felpro? I have a 2000 tahoe limited 5.7 2wd and I need to replace my gaskets thanks.
DO NOT recommend use regular Felpro plastic. Same junk as factory. These are call Superseal Felpro.
Also:
Felpro Premium top end engine gasket kit(iE: the problem solver series)
Fixed any and every issue I ever had.
The fiber gaskets are whack sauce. MAYBE brand new clean bolts and thread chased holes MAYBE that might seal up fine.
For the work involved, save the struggle, get the Fel-Pro premium/problem solver gaskets/upper engine gasket kit.
You have a part number for that kit?
When are we going to see more on the 390 stroker build? Really looking forward to seeing that, I have a 390 I'm going to build for my 69 f-250 4x4 but haven't decided if I'm going to stroke it yet.
great info!!! thanx fel pro!
are you using stamp steel non roller rocker arms with a roller cam and roller lifters and standard pushrods , ?
I hope you read this. Arias revealed oil ring setting with a pull scale. He spoke and Pat Ganahl printed it in H.R. Yeah, I'm old.
Im looking to build a demolition derby engine.. a small block chevy 350 and was wondering if you could give me any advise on it, what would be the best configuration and set up. Thanks in advance.
This is a good topic but have you ever not had the coolant ports not seal? I put on an edelbrock e force supercharger three gaskets later it still won't seal coolant in the valley
Will these intake gaskets work on the heads that are already on the engine? The motor is a 5.7 liter vortec in a 1997 chevy silverado.
Used a felpro 1255 but it leaked bad at the back corners i had to put a film coating of silicone over entire gasket both sides and so far its good but i will go to this set next time..
Mine just came in the mail. Now its time to find a DIY video on how to change the gaskets.
This is great info I needed. I am building a race motor with a set of pro topline vortec heads and need this info. one question, do I have to use self aligning rockers? I will be running a 510 lift cam. ect?
Yes self aligning rockers and check guides for clearence for that cam lift
Will the ms 98000t work on my Edelbrock 7501 intake and 062 vortec heads? Thanks.
Very informative! Silly question maybe, but if and when I have to do this job on my '97 5.7 Suburban (200k) should I use these gaskets also? It's not carbureted but the CFI model. Thanks for any advice.
MrBowNaxe I would like to know the answer to that question also
Yes, They work. I got the same kit and it fits perfectly. I bought this kit on Amazon and it came with both valve cover gaskets even though it says only one in the kit.
MrBowNaxe yup it's the same motor
Ok so what leaks when intake gaskets blow from center portion?
He never mentioned if you loose oil, coolant or get vacuum leaks ?
Any help would be appreciated
@@MrBowNaxe hate to ask but,- How did you reply to Aaron's ? when you were asking the same ? But Noone replied to you... How did you come to the conclusion that you could use the felpro intake gaskets on factory vortec intake w/ csfi system ???
I am now hoping that what I thought was a rear main seal leak was instead the intake leaking down. I wish I could attach pictures of the horrendous state of those intake gaskets. Words can't do it.
I wonder why they dont make this gasket design for non vortec heads/intakes.
Because due to the different bolt on pattern, they hardly ever have that problem
6 years later how did they hold up
So I just purchased the gasket kit. Do they sell just the intake gasket or do you have to buy the whole kit?
you gotta buy the kit
Installed these on a new goodwrench L31. Lost the gasket @ the coolent passive next to the number 2 cylinder. Similar to this we are running a carb setup. I was wondering if the heater hose placement had anything to do with it since the heater hose is coming off the intak directly above the failer in the gasket.. Any thoughts?
it's possible
Hey have a question.. I’m still wanting to use my factory spider fuel injection w/factory plastic intake...can I use still use the feld pro MS 98000 T problem solver gasket you spoke of in your video.. 1999 suburban 5.7 vortex..
Thank you...
Yes
Where did you get the manifold studs, that seems way easier than bolts for proper alignment!
summit sells stud kits
I saw this video. I bought the steel shim gaskets. They leak! Any other ideas? I have changed these 3 times in a year. I now have atomic efi. It runs like crap due to vaccum leaks. I'm running a new motor from jegs. The edelbrock rpm manifold. My bolts are torqued to 11 ft lb. Any ideas would help. I am ready to pull the intake and silicone the gaskets in place.
seems like there is plenty of open room to drill and tap a couple bolts in that center area. why they are not there already is baffling to me, just looking at them here, even if there is water jacket behind, it's the same with other sbc heads, right?. someone screwed the pooch in the r&d dept at gm. haha
With the factory vortec intake there is no room for those bolts but you are right drilling them out is a very good idea if your going with a carb
What do you recommend upgrading when doing this job?
I have a 98 l31 block without the 3rd hole bypass I’m putting a carb on there what’s the best way to reroute the old school pump with that block should I drill that third hole into the block or just drill into the t stat any info would be appreciated thanks mr vintage iron
I buy a thermostat with a bleed hole haven't had any trouble doing that I did fill the system first up to the thermostat level and then install the thermostat it helps bleed the system faster when first filling the engine, I've seen guys use the water pump gasket as a templet and drill the bypass hole it seemed to work fine but I really never saw the necessity to do so
@@Myvintageiron7512 thanks boss ur much appreciated so I’m not going to drill that 3rd hole in my block just mount my old school water pump and put a few holes in the t stat will it have any effects in winter driving or summer driving mostly will I see temperatures rises and drops
I need to a good or one of the best vortec 5.7 head gaskets. I would appreciate if you could recommend one. Thank you sir
Can you do a video on the similarities/difference between gen 4, 5 and 6 Chevy Big Block? What's interchangeable?
Would you recommend using those gaskets with stock intake?
